Coming Out of the Comedy Closet
by Carl Kozlowski[Ed. Note: Carl's 'Grand Theft Audio' airs tonight and every Thursday night on LATalkRadio.com at 7pm PST]
It’s not easy being a conservative in comedy these days. Folks like Evan Sayet, and no doubt Drew Carey or Kelsey Grammer, can tell you that.
Add in the fact that I’m just trying to get to where they are, and not already fully entrenched in success, and a lot of people would wonder if admitting I’m a conservative (actually, libertarian but pro-life to boot) isn’t tantamount to career suicide. The fact I’m also a reporter in the ultra-liberal world of alternative-weekly newspapers, and some would say that I might as well pick out my casket.
I’ll admit that I was a virtually a card-carrying liberal for about a decade until I reached my moment of conversion last summer. Before that, I was hoping for Hillary to win it all, having grown up in Arkansas with Bill ‘n’ Hill keeping things colorful, and then watching Bill keep us out of wars and leaving us with a budget surplus while in the White House.
I bought the Kool-Aid that Bush could do nothing right and was a fervent follower of Michael Moore (I even have a photo with him where we sadly almost look like twins). But when I saw my brethren in the news media suddenly fawning blindly over the Chicago mystery man Barack Obama, giving him the easiest free pass to the White House I’d ever seen despite the fact he had less relevant job experience than it takes to manage a department store, I started to wonder if maybe my profession and its liberal slant had veered dangerously off-course.
And the more I read about him, the more questions I had. I also had always held respect for John McCain and his incredible sacrifices for the nation, so by the time fall rolled around, I was campaigning for the war hero and speaking out against the man who couldn’t even produce a normal birth certificate to prove he belonged in the White House.
All that intersected with the opportunity to fulfill my dream of combining my comedic interests and my journalistic abilities as a radio talk-show host. Bringing the two funniest men I know, fellow showbiz neophytes Jake Belcher and Brant Thoman, we pushed hard for advertising and landed a coveted spot on the lineup of one of America’s top talk-radio stations, KABC in Los Angeles.
Our show was called “Grand Theft Audio: The Jake, Brant & Carl Show,” and for three weeks leading into the election and one week after, we raged hard and comedically in the name of conservatism, McCain and against the encroaching trauma of the Obama Nation. We did it pretty creatively, too; you can still hear the episodes in the “Comedy” section of my website, www.americasfunniestreporter.com.
But then the station had a shakeup and brought in a nationally-syndicated talk show from Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa. We were out of luck, it seemed – that is until a month ago, when we learned about the site www.latalkradio.com and brought “Grand Theft Audio” back, bigger and better than ever because now we could be heard live all over the world. We also have been able to use our past episodes and my decade of experience in the stand-up comedy world to bring in some major players as guests, with comedy superstars like Carlos Mencia, “SNL” vet Kevin Nealon and Bob Saget on tap to guest soon. The site averages 10,000 listeners at any time, but with these kinds of guests and support from places like Big Hollywood, we believe we can grow explosively and soon cross back into regular radio and even TV in addition to our Web efforts.
Our show is like “The View” for guys, only rather than having a token conservative like Elizabeth Hasselbeck, we are the ones steering the ship on the literal Right course. We’ve spoken passionately (yet, again, humorously) against cap and trade and tonight we’re ripping on the Obama health care plan. We talk about all sorts of entertainment and showbiz stories too, plus sports when it matters (like the Michael Vick reinstatement).
And thanks to great people like Evan Sayet and the folks at Breitbart, our daring to be boldly conservative hasn’t been suicidal at all. I’ve found, through Evan’s “Right to Laugh” show (where I recently performed), that not only is there a large conservative audience hungry for entertainment that doesn’t mock them, but that they’re the best and most appreciative audience I’ve ever experienced.
And so I welcome anyone reading this to come along for the ride. We want to take this far and show that not all young people are hopelessly, blindly liberal. We three, for instance, are libertarians in favor of marijuana decriminalization (I don’t use, but my partners are “don’t ask don’t tell” on that one!) and laissez-faire about same-sex marriage. There’s plenty of people our age thinking for ourselves as well, and realizing that we have to wake up now or risk losing so much of what makes our country great.
We may be making the medicine of serious messages sweeter by providing laughs, but our message is dead serious. Tune in at www.latalkradio.com, Channel One, at 7 to 8 p.m. PST, 9 to 10 p.m. CST and 10 to 11 p.m. EST every Thursday night or go to www.latalkradio.com/Grand.php for permanently archived podcasts.

Welcome to the "right" side, Carl
There is no conservative quite like a convert. I'll be on the lookout for more.
Best of luck from a fellow 'convert'.
nothing makes a liberal madder than when others are right. (or when they are used as a punchline)
Bookmarked the site. Thanks Carl.
Scratch a cynic, chances are you'll find a pissed-off idealist.
Scratch a conservative, you'll either find a furious ex-liberal or someone whose parents raised him right.
Very cool …best of luck!
Welcome to the dark side Carl.
I think you may have converted before you knew it. Under Clinton after the first term mid term election Republicans controlled congress (Jan '95 on). They control the spending, not the prez. So you were in love with Newt!
Jake – that pretty damned well sums up the choices — well said!
Put me in the furious ex-lib category. Thank goodness I came to my senses before I voted for more than one Democrat president. I don't think I could live with myself if I had done more damage than that.
I'll pass the site info along to my kids. Sounds like the kind of thing my college-aged sons would really like. There's so little good comedy poking fun of liberal silliness today. There's a gaping hole in the market out there and I hope gutsy people like you can cash in on it BIG TIME!
Welcome to the club, Carl!
I used to be so liberal I once voted for Ralph Nader.
Hi. My name is allyHM, and I'm a recovering liberal.
I was so liberal I voted for Tom Bradley for California Governor. However, in my defense, I really liked him. I'll have to go back and look him up on the internet and see how much kool-aid I was drinking at the time. (Geez, maybe we should have an "I used to be such a moonbat I voted for . . ." thread on this site. It might be cathartic.)
Well put, Jake!
Glad to have you on the "right" side, Carl.
Wow, I liked it! Excellent visual picture you've drawn there, podner. I am a lifelong Con, raised that way, couldn't wait to turn 18, more to vote for Reagan than to legally drink. I agree with your post, wholeheartedly.
They always said that liberals have to hide what they believe to be successful. They also have to mock conservatives so others won't take them seriously. Once you learn what liberals think and look past their mockery to find out what conservatives truly believe you'll almost certainly become a conservative. You'll find out that conservatives are more peaceful, less racist and more for the little guy than liberals BY FAR. Good for you Carl. You're a great writer (I've read your work in the LA and Chicago papers) and it's great to have you on our side.
The time lines, places, actions, motives, when analyzed, support, and are consistent with, what is the answer to the Obama birth puzzle:
Obama’s grandmother is his mother and his mother is his sister.
Think about it. Review all the facts and claims.
eeeeewwwwww!
"….then watching Bill keep us out of wars and leaving us with a budget surplus…"
There was Yugoslavia and the surplus was a myth.

When a creative democrat turns conservative he is proud of the fact and can't wait to announce his arrival
to his new found friends and neighbors. Much llke sinner at a water baptism gaining salvation and telling the world. I don't read liberal blogs and the like because I am afraid God will strike me blind and I don't want that imprinted on my consciousness forever. You that have read liberal sites and have gotten away with it possibly can tell me, do conservatives switch parties and brag about to one and all? For some reason I don't think conservatives do, Republicans maybe, but conservatives I don't think so.
I'm always glad to see a person willing to actually throw some neutralizing scotch into the Kool-aide, Carl. I have to tell you though, I am damn tired of the Moore's and even the McCain's to a certain degree. I am coming from the side opposite of yourself.
I have been a Reagan conservative since I was seventeen, which puts my middle age in perspective. I have seen a great many tiring disappointments occur, as the party leaped with grandeur, off the shoulders of the contract with America, national sovereignty, state's rights and secure borders.
The instant the party secured its power in D.C., it began to immediately corrode from the influence in that town. Those promises, some kept, began to drop off, as the steel faded before the caustic chemical effect of the lobbies.
It sort of reminds me of the words 'Welcome to Hell' painted over the 'Lago' sign in Eastwood's film 'The High Plains Drifter'.
Many of the life-long conservatives like myself, see our ideology riding back, like Clint Eastwood's unnamed law enforcement character, just wanting a quick drink, a shave and some payback for frustration, after being horsewhipped, beaten and buried in the desert, by the press. We are being asked to come back and shoot the bandits, who are stealing the town dry. However, we are disgusted with the corrupted and cowardly townsfolk (GOP), begging for our support, as the incessant snail mail and robo-calls attest.
I know that I feel this way.
I don't want to be a skunk at the party, but somewhere along the line, the size of the tent became more important than the show being performed within it.
How can we both sweep that Kool-aide, off of Lago's pathetic, appeasement picnic tables, replace it with hard western scotch, guts and ammunition, in defense of this democracy and its people?

Or as one friend put it to me, "Date Democrats but marry Republicans." Nudge nudge wink wink.
Lol I was about to say the same thing!
Better yet, date a liberal, convert them, then marry them. =)
Welcome Carl.
I think you will like it on our side of the fence… We don't do tofu dogs and vegi-burgers at our BBQs…
Curious to hear more about this and later discuss if you convince me or at least explain it! Can you write me in a private email to Comickoz@aol.com? thanks even if you don't! Carl
CALL YOUR CONGRESSMAN AND SENATORS TODAY BEFOR THEY LEAVE ON BREAK. tell them you support a free market health care system and not a government health care system. remind them the government run programs are poory managed with endless waist. Don't forget to ask them about their Cap and Trade vote and tell them if they voted for it they voted against American and for China and india. Remind them where they live and that they work for your not Nancy Pelosi or President Obama. Remind them that buying votes with Pork is not waht they were sent to Washington for either. Tell them you support the effort to balance the federal budget, even if it means cutting government programs.
I'm Phyreblade. And I used to be a liberal. Not sure about the whole furious part. I was more fluffy than furious. Then I grew up.
Really? You must have been messing with the wrong girls! I had plenty of conserv girl friends in school, and we were all considered pretty fun. Being a con didn't mean we were prudes. Not by a looong shot. Oh well, you guys have seen the light now, so that's all that matters.
"High Plains Drifter," one of my all time favorites. I cannot believe that I did not see this connection. I whole heartedly agree, it is a perfect example.
That comment kind of riled me a little, aslo.
Neville Chamberlain "kept Britian out of wars". For awhile. Then there was hell to pay.
That comment kind of riled me a little, also.
Neville Chamberlain "kept Britian out of wars". For awhile. Then there was hell to pay.
Have you ever noticed that on the "talking heads" shows when they have a Republican spokeswoman and a Democrat spokeswoman on the same panel, the Republican is almost always better looking?
Even more – Get in their faces while they are on break. If they hold a townhall, be there. If they have an office near you, go there. Call; call again; call a third or fourth time. Let them know you disapprove of government control over your life.
Riled me too. That was as polite as I could be. Must still have a little lib in him to keep on perpetuating BS.
I've always been pretty conservative without putting a label to it. I attribute that to both a vivid imagination and an education that taught me to think logically and critically. A lot of things that lefties propose sound really good on the surface, but a little deeper imagining and critical analysis shows their ideas to be impractical and unworkable in the real world though nice fantasies. Most people don't take the time to think that far, or they don't realize that they should. It sounds to me like you had your wake-up call and started to really think about and examine what was actually going on around you. Hopefully, you'll be instrumental in waking up thousands more. Welcome to the struggle!
There's a certain phenomena out there that to actually do a male-based topical radio comedy show that doesn't BS around the issues, you're going to have to skewer conservative, because the liberal PC police have tried to make so many topics off-limits.
Try to do a 'liberal' comedy radio show, especially in the age of Barack Obama, and you'll come off as hackey and as comedically castrated as all of the current late night talk show hosts who both ideologically agree with 90 percent of what the president does and fear for their careers from others in the liberal entertainment universe if they actually try to be funny at the expense of their hero.
Alternate headline:
Politically flip-flopping "comedian"/media ho' files press release as news article.
Forget the Birth Certificate.
I want to see Obama's college transcripts.
On the down side you will be one of a handful of conservative comedians out there. On the up side you will have so much more raw material to work with that your fellow liberal comics won't touch.
that's the same comment I read when I first saw the article that had me kind of questioning the 'overall' conservative stance that Karl was saying he was a 'convert"… then there was the "Before that, I was hoping for Hillary to win it all"
don't get me wrong, if he has truly seen that the liberalism is what we conservatives have argued .. then great, but Karl, i'd really have to wonder if you're a "Conservative" or more along the lines of a "Blue Dog Democrat"?
(i have yet to hear the show… and I don't have any archive-listening ability to listen back on here at work.. but I'll at least listen to the show and see what you and your hosts say before I make a final decision.)
I have a confession
I have always been pretty conservative
But in my younger days I found liberal women and girls were FUN !
/shame on me

Exactly. People credit Clinton with some things that really were a result of Newt Gingrich and the Republicans in Congress at the time. But, Clinton was smart enough to move to the center and not force a lefty agenda, which I appreciate.
Carl, that is definitely something my college-age daughter and her friends would enjoy. The stories of how professors drone non-stop about the magnificent essence of Obama's ballsweat is sickening. I'm pleased to offer her a 1 hour distraction.
Welcome to the dark side.
Who?
"token RINO like Elizabeth Hasselbeck" – fixed it. Once this distinction becomes second nature, you will no longer need to flip or flop to find your conservative principles.

This is an interesting video from Pajamas TV. You can select the video quality on the left side of the player.

Good luck to you fella! Just remember, liberals aren't too "tolerant" of apostates. I hope you have your name, address and driver's license number tattooed somewhere on you so that the coroner's office can identify your body. (Figuatively speaking.)
So did I (Carl Kozlowski here, writer of this blog!) in 2000.
I was talking about how i felt UNTIL LAST SUMMER.
Here's wishing for a speedy recovery allyHM. Nice to have yet another cute girl on our side.
"vivid imagination." I call mine my Science Fiction mind because I have a huge imagination willing and able to boldly go where no man has gone before. Sometimes I scare myself when you consider how easily humans can take a brilliant idea and use it in very very dark ways. Case in point: national health care database….YIKES! On-Star….YIKES!
Is that like the whole "Madonna/Whore Complex" ?
why?
All i ask is that you listen to the show and read my Facebook comments and I think you'll be hard-pressed to find someone trying to work in Hollywood speaking out any more stridently than i do. It certainly isn't a good career move in Hollywood for me to change my views. So people aren't ever allowed to change without being utterly distrusted? How about Paul in the Bible? Ron Silver, Evan Sayet, David Zucker, etc.? Oh God, they used to be liberal so they must be liars!!! I was brainwashed by college like zillions of other American kids. It was heartbreaking to me lose my love for my profession and realize that the mainstream media was so wrong. Once I turned against Obama, I started meeting lots of Republicans online and then in person who gave me links and books to read, people to watch and listen to, etc.
Another major step in my journey came in the Bill O'Reilly string of interviews with Obama last year. I kept hearing about the challenge for Obama to come on, but i was believing the lie that my liberal friends and the media were telling me that O'Reilly was a meanspirited bigot. So i was curious about what he would do with Obama, tuned in and found he was the one person truly asking Obama substantive questions, but not in a hateful way but a firm and respectful way. And because O'Reilly was smart enough to make each Obama segment just part of his show rather than one whole episode, i tuned in to all the parts and watched the rest of each "Factor" episode. And I found that O'Reilly was fascinating to me, and fair to all he spoke to and about. I got hooked, realized how big a lie was being sold about him by the mainstream, and then started watching Fox News as my main TV news source.
Yep, I knew if I scrolled down far enough I'd find somebody who said this. Do you really think plugging a new radio show featuring more conservative comedy and comentary is a bad thing? I never would have heard of it if he had not been INVITED to post here. If you don't like how it was advertised, don't listen. Let the market decide. Thank you for your comment.
Phil, ha! Thanks for that. I've actually been "recovering" for sometime (oh, 6 or 7 years now) and as much as I LOVE being called a "cute girl"…I'm afraid that "girl" no longer applies in my case. As for my comment, it was my attempt to be humorous as if I were in a 12-step recovery group. Guess it didn't read that way. Ah, well.
And what are YOU doing for the cause other than bagging on someone who's putting himself out there and has the guts to use his real name to talk, "Snertly"? And regardless of what you think of my publicity, I definitely am a comedian and have plenty of video at some of the top clubs in the country to show it. Next time use your real name and meet me on stage.
Welcome from a fellow former liberal (although I only finally admitted to my conservatism after 9/11).
I think that we are possibly the best ones to "convert" others, because we know all the tactics, we've thought the same way, and we might have a better time showing our fellow liberals the "right" way.
And when you have humor on your side, that helps a lot, because it breaks the ice and helps people relax a little, laugh at themselves.
Great post. I'm going to have to check out your show. There is nothing better than good conservative humor.
I felt the same way – there were some issues that I was obviously conservative on, but didn't put the label to it. I basically thought of myself as either a Liberal Republican or a Conservative Democrat.
But that's party affiliation. Identifying myself as a "conservative" makes more sense, even than libertarian, b/c it speaks to my devotion to the Founding Fathers, the Constitution, etc. Even though I'm still more socially liberal than most conservatives on issues like abortion, and gay marriage.
And yeah, thinking logically and critically is the most important. For the longest time I still clung to some liberal notions on certain topics, but listening to intelligent conservative talk radio and doing some reading taught me to question those notions and think things through better.
Boy am I glad I did. I'm a Born Again Conservative! LOL!
