‘Will and Grace’ Star: Leno ‘Insane’ for Appealing to Red State Viewers

Liberals already have David Letterman, Jon Stewart, George Lopez, Stephen Colbert and countless others on their side. But that’s not enough for Mullally, the two-time Emmy winner and “W&G” scene stealer.
She recently blasted former Gov. Sarah Palin’s stand-up comedy debut on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” at movieline.com, mocking both Leno’s comedy bits and his attempt to woo conservative audiences.
“Could it be any more bald-faced that he’s going after the red states? It’s insane. It’s just right out there, full on … amazing. And she was wearing jeans [note: said with a drawn out snarl]. ‘I’m gonna wear denim! I’m gonna dress it down!’”
Sounds insane, all right. Why would the host of a popular late night show give a platform to a gorgeous, charismatic politician who appeals to a wide swath of viewers?
It’s almost as crazy as pouring millions into a movie like “Green Zone,” even though anti-Iraq War films have withered and died at the boxoffice for nearly a decade. Or, even better, being a professional comic and avoid mocking the current White House occupant.
Too many comedians have clammed up now that a Democrat is in the White House. Bully for “Saturday Night Live” which has offered some stinging bits aimed at President Obama.
Once upon a time it was a comedian’s job to mock the president, no matter his or her party affiliation.
That’s not always the case anymore. Leno is one of the few comics around willing to tweak Obama – just like he tweaked Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush before him. He does so without malice, and with an eye toward making us laugh and keeping the president humble.
Leno’s approach isn’t Red State or Blue State. It’s that of a comedian who realizes appealing to both sides of the ideological aisle makes good business sense.
Celebrities like Mullally can’t see the wisdom in that approach, apparently.

Sorry to hear this but not surprised. Leno dared to wander away from the reservation by a teensy-weensy bit so off with his head. A shame since Ms. Mullally is a terriffic stage performer with real presence and great pipes. She was the best thing (as Rosemary) in the excellent revivial of "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" a few years back. I never watched "Will and Grace" but I got the impression her character on that show was more thhan a little grating.

Considering that Mullally's current career highlight seems to be butter commercials, I'd say it's a fair assumption that she's very, very jealous of Sarah's star power. Like J-Lo, she's just trying to latch on to Sarah in an attempt to share in Sarah's spotlight.

If I were her I'd be more concerned about my career than Sarah Palin. With her failed attempts to star in pathetic series since W&G, she really doesn't have a foot to stand on. Has anyone really ever heard of Children's Hospital, In the Motherhood or Party Down?? They show up on her IMDB, but I've never heard of them.
Since when was appealing to an audience a crime? Why do so many in Hollywood hold such contempt for the people they seek to woo to their film projects and TV shows? I've seen episodes of W&G in the very beginning of the series where Megan's character actually spoke in a normal voice. Sad that the producers discovered the only way she could carry her character is by talking in a whinny mouse voice. Doesn't say much about her talents, or lack thereof.
If Hollywood depended solely on liberals to buy tickets to their films then it would be completely shutdown within a year. The liberal base is made up of those wanting anything free things, handouts, charity, etc. They aren't very smart if you ask me.

wow first of all the change in her voice in W&G was HER decision and HER IDEA. She actually didn't do it in the beginning thinking they would fire her but it helped the character and the show when she did it! Also Megan is FROM a red state, Oklahoma, so I doubt she was actually bashing the red states, she was aiming towards Leno! and her husband didn't even vote for Obama, so she knows plenty about both sides!!! and if you listen to the actual interview she also talked about Leno's comedy segments like Jaywalkiing and stuff, so it was never really about Sarah Palin, it was about the Conan/Leno controversy and how she thought Conan did thr right thing!! She mentioned Sarah Palin once and people completely igonores the rest of her interview! THAT'S INSANE!!!

For people who see "bigotry" around every corner, they sure seem distrubed by the idea that Americans who don't live in LA (a civilization we should all be trying to emulate, ya know) might actually be human beings who, unlike Hollywood lemmings, can actually think for themselves.

Leno lost the coastal trendies back during the first term of the Clinton Administration. They were the ones who howled when the people running NBC at the time opted for Jay over Dave and have never forgiven him for it, but the divide really didn't get political until the past decade, when those same elites on the coast became angered that the folks in flyover country had put Bush into office.
Dave's willingness to go with the flow and play to only the Blue State viewers since the shock of the 9/11 attack wore off heightened the divide. Between 2003 and last year when Jay went to the 10 p.m. slot, it wasn't so much that Leno was pandering to Red State voters, it was that he wasn't pandering as much as Letterman to the Blue State voters. And among many of the media pundits, that was another strike against him, and also fueled the resentment over the way he got the 11:35 p.m. slot back from Conan (you didn't have to be a liberal to be angry about the way O'Brien was treated, but a lot of the liberal wrath against Leno was mainly anti-Jay — if they had been so pro-Conan, he wouldn't have had the ratings problems that made NBC pull the plug).
So by 2010, Leno knows where his viewers are coming from and knows where he can mine new viewers from, and it's not by having Nancy Pelosi on to do a stand-up routine. It is pandering to his core audience, but it's no different from an angry Letterman replacing John McCain with Keith Olbermann when McCain didn't do his show that night during the campaign in 2008.
You know what's funny? Is that all of you–how should I say this-"conservatives" are going after a person that has the right to say whatever she wants and criticize her about her opinions and make this huuuuge deal about it.
