Before I read any other posts, I've gotta chime in... Although I am normally pretty level & unflappable,
I love and adore Matthew! If he ever starts a cult, I am joining!!! His voice, his smile, his eyes, his abs!!!! How can you not love that Texas drawl???? I saw the PSA this weekend sometime & and was rather giddy!
(I am 30something, female, unmarried - I am SOOOOOO allowed to fawn!!) :-)

Besides, his role in A Time to Kill was off the charts. So, thanks Matthew!

I give up. I don't know and I don't care what Mr. McConaughey's politics are, and I'm glad he didn't say.

The point of my post is that the right can sometimes be just as venemous in their hatred of differing opinions as the left. Our soldiers are not children, and as such they certainly understand that some people don't agree with the war. In fact, certainly many of our soldiers and sailors don't agree either - my best friend, a dedicated soldier, never agreed with the war. But he went as ordered, did his duty to the best of his ability, witnessed friends die, and was discharged himself for injuries received during his tour. Are these people arguing now that my friend didn't (and doesn't) support the troops?

If our soldiers and sailors in Iraq can have differing opinions on the war, why can't we civilians?

Thanks for your comments bet. That's it for me.

Unfortunately, you're not getting it. McConaughey is coming from the premise of supporting the troops. He is concerned about what the troops want and need. He makes no mention of his political leanings. He doesn't promote any party agenda. So, no. It's not political. Unless you consider everything political.

I'm not saying it's impossible to disagree with the war and at the same time, support the troops. What I am saying is that in this polarized environment, people lump them together. And my "argument" doesn't strengthen anything. It's nothing more than an explanation of behavior. So don't try to use it as evidence of Matthew McConaughey's politics (of which we have no knowledge-primarily because he's been decent enough not to cram it down our throats).

I agree that many times people who disagree with the war tend to treat our soldiers in a disrespectful manner.

However, my stance that Matthew McConaughey is being political is only strengthened by your argument.

Paul, yes. In theory one should be able to support troops fighting a war and at the same time disagree with the underlying premise of said war. However, the problem with this is that in today's society it never works out that way. People who disagree with war don't separate the soldiers from it. And the soldiers are all too aware of that fact even when those people try to hide it. Soldiers are not stupid. They can recognize disdain when they see it and they can recognize a disingenuous assertion of false support.

You see Paul, if these people actually supported the troops, they would care about the troops. But they don't. At least their actions don't bear that out. Generally they are more concerned about every other issue except the ones the troops are concerned about. In fact they have no idea what the troops want or need.
