Chevy Chase in CaddyShack is a lot like the Gopher in Caddyshack.: almost completely superfluous. Ted Knight and Rodney Dangerfield (and Cindy Morgan's body) carry the movie. Doug Kenney hated that gopher so much that some people cite it as a contributing factor in his downward spiral (along with a Columbian druglord's ransom of blow he did). Josh Karp has an excellent biography of Douglas Kenney that has some good behind the scenes details about Caddyshack, Animal House, etc. Near the very end he talks about Doug Kenney and Chevy Chase going to Hawaii together to get off of coke. Yeah right. Kind of like Mama Cass and Dom Deluise tring to kick food together.

I'm really showing what a geek I am, but I knew Cindy Morgan solely from TRON, not from Caddyshack at all.

I don't think I've ever even sat down and watched Caddyshack from beginning to end, at least not since I was about eleven years old and NBC was showing it every other week. I've certainly never seen the theatrical, non-sanitized version.

I always thought Chevy Chase was the weakest link in Caddy Shack. I have never really saw his appeal. He seemed to be phoneing it in in almost every movie he has been in. I can't think of any movie he has been in that would not have been made better by another actor.

Btw, the last movie I can even remember seeing him in was Memoirs Of A Invisable Man, has he been doing low key stuff or did Hollywood start seeing what I saw?
