‘True Blood’ Star William Sanderson: ‘Shouldn’t we support our soldiers?’
by Christian TotoWilliam Sanderson says he likes to fly under the radar. The in-demand character actor’s resume just won’t let him get away with it. Sanderson‘s career has brought him to the past (“Deadwood“), the future (“Blade Runner“) and a few surreal points in between (the long-running “Newhart“).
The actor is currently co-starring in HBO’s vampire drama “True Blood,“ set to begin its second season at 9 p.m. EST June 14. Sanderson plays Sheriff Dearborne, a character whose normalcy stands apart from the show’s menagerie of shape shifters, neck biters and mind readers. “You can hide when you have beards and mustaches. I don’t have a lot of that,” he says of the straightforward sheriff.
What he and his colleagues do have is the respect of HBO’s higher ups. HBO executives “trust the creators of their show,” he says. “They set the tone. If they’re under pressure, Lord, it’ll reach us,” he says.
The 65-year-old actor is at a loss as to why the vampire genre cannot be killed, adding even show creator Alan Ball (“Six Feet Under”) can’t break down the appeal of the undead.
Sanderson’s biggest role early in his career led to an eight-year gig – and entry into pop culture lore – with his role in “Newhart.” Does “Hi, I’m Larry, this is my brother Darryl, and this is my other brother Darryl,” ring a bell? “I was pretty naïve back then, not knowing that everyone has fallow periods,” he says. “I was on a high the whole time, to have a 10 to 5 job.”
He would find steady work later on via a gaggle of television dramas, from “Lost” and “Walker Texas Ranger” to “The X Files,” but also appeared regularly in films like “The Client” (1994) and “Last Man Standing” (1996). It seemed every other story being told in Hollywood had a need for the cagey character actor.
Sanderson had hoped to spend some time this year traveling overseas to meet with U.S. troops on a USO-style mission, but his schedule wouldn’t allow it. Sanderson served in the Army for two years starting at age 18, and he remembers actor Vic Morrow once visiting Fort Benning where he was stationed.
Sanderson still hopes to follow through on his plans. He has great respect for the military and feels his time in the service helped chart his professional course. “At the time I just wanted to get in and get out,” he says of his military service. “In retrospect, it’s the thing I’m proudest of.” He’s less than proud of some fellow actors who won’t go out of their way to show their appreciation for today’s soldiers.
“Left wing people are anti-war. No one likes war. But shouldn’t we support the soldiers?” asks Sanderson, who says his brother was spat upon in San Francisco when he returned from Vietnam.
Today, Sanderson splits time between a home in Hollywood and one in Harrisburg, Pa., where his wife has strong roots. “They don’t care so much about this Hollywood stuff,” he says.
Sanderson still auditions for some roles despite his distinguished body of work, and the thought of retiring from the business creeps up on him now and again. The rejection that comes along with being a working actor can wear you down, he says. Until then, he’ll keep on working, although he fears he may have missed out on the one part he’s always wanted to play.
“I’m too old to do a movie that shows the good side of the American soldier,” he says.

Oh no you're not! Lead and they will follow.
You are NOT too old Mr. Sanderson! Thanks for your comments William Sanderson.
I LOVE profiles of character actors like Mr. Sanderson, and it seems his character is stronger than most by far. I'd appreciate seeing more of these.
Me too! It has nothing to do with politics but for some reason I find myself much more interested in character actors than the A-listers. I'm talking about people like Stephen Tobolowski, Danny Trejo, Stephen Root, etc.
In fact, I recommend Stephen Tobolowski's Birthday Party, which is half-bio, half-day in the life documentary.
I've always enjoyed Mr. Sanderson's work. Nice to know there's a core of realism and respect behind it.
And I'm extremely ticked that HBO and Milch have abandoned Deadwood.
Top of the list among character actors, but more importantly, top in character among men.
"This is my brother William Sanderson and this is my other brother William Sanderson."
Mr. Sanderson, I appreciate your having the courage to express your views. As far as being too old, I agree with the earlier commenters. Maybe you can't star as a 22 year old, but that doesn't mean you can't be involved in good roles. Try on this idea. A story about a Vietnam war hero reminiscing about how badly he was treated by all the old war protesters. Maybe the guy even gets profiled by Janet Napolitano because he is ex-military.
Thanks for all of your comments. Mr. Sanderson was delightful to speak with … utterly self-deprecating in a genuine sense and wise.
Nice piece. I always liked Sanderson's work and encourage him to keep supporting the troops.
Your Brother was spat on when he returned from Viet-Nam. Then he's My Brother too. Continued success to You and Your Brother.
William Sanderson has to be one of the most reliable character actors in Hollywood today. He is always perfect in any role he takes – comedy or drama.
It's a treat to know he's a stand-up guy as well.
Agreed with all the comments here, he has always been a person who was very recognizable for the roles he took as well as the ability to be the common man stuck in a bad situation.
Why couldn't he play an officer in a war drama, its not like they don't have men in their later years still in the service.
We always enjoy it when he is on the screen. I will probably always think of him as Larry from Newhart, but we love to see him appear in all of our favorite shows. Such an interesting actor, and now we know that he is a good man, too.
He's wonderful in Blade Runner.
Why has there been no mention of Stephen Colbert doing shows from Iraq on this blog?
I loved him in Deadwood, and appreciate this human glimpse into his person. Thanks.
BTW, anyone remember "Dark Shadows"? We thought the world was ending when that came into popularity. It was truly scary stuff for its time. Gave me the creeps! So I googled it up just now. Seems Burton and Depp are planning a revival (can you revive the undead?) of Barnabas Collins.
I'd say Mr. Sanderson just made Jan Nan's watch list! Congrats Williams!
I don't know–I think the shows were brilliantly done. I guess they're too wrapped up in the Palin/Letterman and Carrie Prejean dramas that are FAR more compelling!
No you are not to old, age is just a state of mind. Too old to be a soldier in the movies, nope. We have 60 year olds on the front lines. I know helicopter pilot that are well into their 70's and they still get up in the morning and fly a whole days worth of work. If you get the chance go and do. This is what makes us as Americans, we go and we do.
Great interview Christian. You should find a way to earn money doing this.
Let's cap movie star and athlete's salaries. Oprah made 273 million dollars last year. I think she needs a cap on her salary as CEO since that is "excessive".
Hey, I'm just glad they've stuck wtih True Blood… Sanderson's one of my fave characters in the show… (although it took me a while to figure out he was on the Newhart show… I knew he was there, but I couldn't ever place him.)
I'm really happy to read this article @ BH this morning. I want to say, I've known Bill Sanderson for many years and as people have commented, the man is one of the great character actors to grace the screen.
More important, the man is truly a gentleman. A fine soul. Clearly a patriot. It is a pleasure to know him.
I love "True Blood," and it always makes it sweeter to know that someone you admire is on a favorite show.
Nice piece, but he's a supporting character at best, not a co-star Still, he _is_ the sanest character on the show, small though his role may be. Also, how is anyone surprised that vampire stories continue to be popular?! They're fun as hell! Bloody, sexy and mysterious…for some reason that's always appealed to people! A few questions I wish were asked: how does he like working for Alan Ball, who, to say the very least, isn't very conservative. And since Sanderson is working for HBO, what did he think of last seasons' Generation Kill on that network that showed American troops in Iraq?
Nice to see a tip of the hat to a fine performer. I am a huge fan of character actors like Mr. Sanderson who always bring craft and intelligence to their roles, no matter how small. To me they represent one of the proudest traditions in theater and films; that of the savvy performer who "just gets on with it." It may be just me but there seems to have been a real drop-off in the quantity and quality of this sort of actor in recent years. TCM just presented a bloc of Preston Sturges films during it's "Great Directors" month and part of the joy was watching classic performers like Eugene Pallette, William Demarest, Franklin Pangborn, Raymond Walburn, Akim Tamiroff, Eric Blore and Melville Cooper strut their stuff in a virtual Olympics of scene-stealing. William Sanderson is in good company. Not only that but Larry, Darryl and Darryl still make me chuckle. .
‘Shouldn’t we support our soldiers?’
Why do we even need to ask this question, why? Of course I know why, I just can't beleive it.
I totally agree with you.
Re: Sturges, he's one of the best directors when it comes to having a "stock company" of actors. Of course, we still see that today to a lesser extent with Paul Thomas Anderson, Judd Apatow, Kevin Smith, and Christopher Guest.
I've always figured that character actors are among the unsung heroes of the business. Not a bad gig if you can get it though…if you're good enough, your career will often outlast the A-listers.
Sanderson also had a small yet memorable role on the original "Lonesome Dove" mini-series.
Sanderson had always stood out to me, both in Newhart and Blade Runner. As messed up as Hollywood is, it's been heartening lately to see how many of our best character actors are really pro-troops. It's cool to realize someone I've admired like Sanderson actually gets it.
CT, you might want to ask him to stop by Ft Bragg, or the Ft Belvior crowd outside DC, or Djibuti or Afgan to decide if there are no real characters of his age he can play. We have not had any good stories with real characters for some time, but they are there. I'm thinking Special Ops, but the Guard and Reserve also have any number of based-on-fact dramas and old-fart American citizen-soldiers stories waiting to be told. His character experience fits pretty well. Actually, with the Harrisburg connection, he might want to stop by the Army War College at Carlisle Barracks for inspiration as to the wars of the Rooster Cogburns.
I liked him in Newhart with his two brothers, Daryl & Daryl. He's a more versatile actor than I thought since this is my only reference.
What he says about Hollywood is accurate. Once upon a time, Hollywood defended America & American values, but that all changed by the 1960's counter culture; the same counter culture continues to rot in Hollywood where smoke & mirrors are treated as reality.
he's not too old. the story of "the hero of gettysburg" has never been put to film. it's the story of septuagenarian John Burns.

This post says it pretty well. I just watched Blade Runner again the other night, so I'm glad to have this article sharing a bit more of the man behind the character.
Always enjoyed the way he has played his roles on TV and in movies. Reading this makes me respect him not just as a character, but also as an American. The left talks a good line about being antiwar, unless it's another country they support. They don't realize you can be anti-war, while still being prepared to go to war to protect the people of your country and its institutions. Thank you, Mr. Sanderson for your service and your acting. From a fellow veteran and retired Gunny.
BH did have links to at least one and I think two pieces in the headlines section at the top of the front page.
I'm spitballing here but maybe the popularity of the undead genre is due to the fact that we all would like to live forever. If you don't believe in God or the need to trust His Son for eternal life, then the undead dead "life" is the next best thing to wish for. And look at it this way: You're the undead. The laws and morals of mere mortals don't apply to you. Hmmm… sounds vaguely familiar…
I've worked with actors who have served their country. They (for the most part) prove to be stable, reasonable people of character who realize, as is suggested by Mr. Sanderson in this piece, that there are more important things in life. I'm glad he's still working and honing his craft. I'm a character actress! This gives me hope!
He could easily play a General officer..too old? BAH!
Over 20 years ago, when Mr. Sanderson was still on NEWHART, I was his personal assistant. Just out of my teens I was as naive as they come. Consequently, I didn't fully appreciate the man I worked for at the time. Many years later, after working with talent in various arenas of the entertainment industry including some from old theatre royalty and some major lead film actors I look back and realize something. Mr. Sanderson was the single most influential person in my life. He taught me a strong work ethic. He taught me to be gracious and to be a professional. He is as genuine as I was green when I knew him. There is nothing "Hollywood" phony about him. He was responsible, loved his family and truly had a heart for our soldiers. He also liked Elvis, cowboy boots and fantastic smelling cigars! He was always self deprecating but just as brilliant, too. I hope he works as long as he is happy doing so!
I have a college aged son who was a very busy child actor in the 1990s. I taught him how to behave professionally and graciously on the set modeling how I saw Mr. Sanderson worked.
Sanderson used to put something behind his ear before he went onto the set on taping nights. So I started doing that with my son . I told him that's what "Larry" did when he got nervous . It worked like a charm to cure his occassional bouts of stage fright!
O, that's so nice to read. God bless him.
“I’m too old to do a movie that shows the good side of the American soldier,” he says.
Negative Private! The only holdback is that no one has the guts to film one.
"And I'm extremely ticked that HBO and Milch have abandoned Deadwood."
I still have no idea how they came to that decision. One of the finest, most original pieces of television to come along in years and they give it 36 episodes?
I loved watching Newhart and have always been a fan of Sanderson's. Whenever I catch him in something, it brings a smile to my face. He is one of those guys, like Christopher Walken, where no matter how good or bad the movie, when he is on screen, you know you are gonna like it.
I was already thrilled for Season 2 of True Blood, and this makes me a little more exicted, I offically like his character even if he's not a fan of Vampire Bill.
I think it's more shallow than that (vampire appeal, not your theory)…modern fictional vampires tend to be described as astoundingly beautiful, irresistible seducers, fantastically rich, and the works that feature them usually involve a great deal of consequence-free sex/erotica (the True Blood Books, Anita Blake mysteries, etc.) Sex and romance always sell, and vampires are the ultimate bad boys (and girls). They're just plain fun–they stay up all night, don't have to have jobs, and when needs be, can bench press a truck. In some ways they represent a very juvenile fantasy, which clearly appeals to angsty teens and grownups alike.
Yes, I agree on both counts. I'm a Christopher Walken fan myself, too!

You think we need a "pay czar"? Obama is on the case. But there is no way in hell he will do anything against his Hollywood constituency.
I can't wait, either, but since the new season loosely adapts "Living Dead In Dallas," I don't think we'll be seeing all that much of the sheriff. I want more Eric!!
William Sanderson has been one of my favorite actors for many years. It is great learning that he is an individualist too. That has become such a rare thing in Hollywood today. Thanks for the feature.
