‘Change Begins Within’ Benefit Concert: ‘Teach One Million Kids To Meditate’
by Christian TotoThe Left told us all the change we needed would come when Sen. Barack Obama got our vote Nov. 4. Now, a new change is coming our way – courtesy of Obama supporter Sheryl Crow and some of her famous friends.
On April 4, Sir Paul McCartney will headline the “Change Begins Within” benefit concert at Radio City Music Hall, with proceeds going to the David Lynch Foundation. Among those filling out the roster include Ringo Starr, Donovan, Eddie Vedder, Ben Harper, Moby, Paul Horn, Bettye LaVette and Crow.
The David Lynch Foundation is dedicated toward spreading Transcendental Meditation to the masses in hopes of bringing us inner – and world – peace. The concert, according to the folks behind the event, “will raise funds to teach one million at-risk children to meditate – giving them life-long tools to overcome stress and violence and promote peace and success in their lives.”
That doesn’t sounds bad … especially when you compare it to comments Lynch has made in the past regarding his foundation’s work: “America urgently needs at least one university to teach the science of peace—and to actually promote peace in the world.”
Is anybody else changed out by now?

All this is a distraction while the financial institutions, thanks to the repeal of the 1933 Glass-Steagall act, continue to rob us blind even while the country is headed for Depression. Read "The Creature from Jekyll Island."
TM is dangerous stuff, not for the faint of heart… many spiritual people think you open your soul up to demonic possession. Not all will agree, although Bobby Jindal might. Still, kids are extremely suggestive and this doesn't feel right. New age worship is a form of pagan idolatry, along with Gaia worship and it is replacing
religion (particlarly Christianity) in this country… global warming is Gaia worship, to a degree.
Don't blame the artists, they're clueless anyway. The parents, however…
I hear that if you meditate enough, your 'Third Eye' becomes less poopy and you only need one square to wipe it.
Donovan?
Wasn't Buffy Ste. Marie available?
"shut up and sing" is such an apt phrase. on the other hand, a "david lynch foundation" sounds downright scary.
i thought all they had to do was vote, now this and norman lear's bornagain group are requiring them to sign up and pledge all over again. they must have lost the database………………………..
An example of people with way too much time and money on their hands. Can't they just volunteer at a shelter or something? At least then they could truly help somebody.

I can't help it. Every time I read a story like this my eyes roll. It's uncontrollable.
Good, you're halfway there. Now start spouting out nonsense and you can get a job as a democratic advisor!
Yikes! I'd rather learn to control the eye-roll.
Gosh… why do I need to learn TM when I can just drink Mello Yello and sing "Rikki Tikki Tavi" ?
"When I was a young man, I thought there were organizations killin' my snakes for me:
i.e, the church
i.e, the government
i.e, the schools
But when I got a little bit older, I learned I had to kill 'em myself."
Hey, whaddya know – personal responsibility and gun rights! It's a conservative song! Go Hurdy Gurdy Man!
It depends on what you meditate about.
whatever eddie vedder says, I say do the opposite
Weren't they the ones hanging out in airports back in the seventies?
I used to do Yoga then realized I was paying $20 an hour to a quasi-religious cult which worshiped the inner divine narcissist who could never offer any salvation.
I enjoyed the exercise part and it made my derriere look fantastic, however the ohming to my inner divine narcissism was making me crazy.
The more I think about it the more I understand why Lefties lost their minds after 9/11/2001; if you ohm for endless hours on your divine inner peace then open your eyes to the real world in conflict there is nothing which registers the disparity, you believe your indulgent inner self is the cure to world peace.
The poor Sweeties endlessly ohming their divines are not aware of the fact that there are enemies of peace who have no intention of ending war. I once ask a yoga instructor 'if you can divine peace how come yoga people never hold their expensive yoga retreats in places desperate for peace like Darfur rather than protected places like Costa Rica? I did not get an answer however I did receive a really a hateful look.
Also it was weird to be surrounded by so many people, mostly females, who worshiped themselves as a goddess except all their goddess worship was manufactured in the heads. If you worship yourself day after day, year upon year eventually you will become devoid of all humanity. Maybe this is why these people didn't care about the treatment of Iraqis under Saddam and what liberation means to humankind; the ohmers had lost all their humanity.
I may not go to church however I do believe in God and will defend those practicing Christians because I have seen and experienced what happens when the self is worshiped; heads explode all over the place when reality invades a self-divined state of mind.
I switched to swimming, I found my head is clearer and it doesn't damaging my joints the way Yoga does; I will say Yoga does something nice to the a**, the other end not so much.
Oh my gosh, that comment was awesome!! HAHAHAHA!!!
This is all widow dressing for cults
Oh look…there's Big Brother in the background.
Reminds me of the old plan to levitate the Pentagon.
What a shame. At one time, during my much younger days, I enjoyed listening to Donovan.
So much for that memory.
I think the ancient hippies who participated in that still actually claim that "it really did levitate just a little"
that's the kind of mindset we are forced to argue against, people who are fully divorced from reality
Is Lynch a Republican? I once heard he was. But it was one of my liberal pinhead "friends" who told me.
I DON'T UNDERSTAND IT SO IT MUST BE WRONG. (MAYBE EVEN "DEMONIC".)
you wingnuts are so silly

Someone needs to tell Ms. Crow that no amount of political activism or meditation will fill the vacancy that Lance Armstrong left in her — or the vacancy between her ears..
Man, this has the potential for some great comedy gold YouTube snippets come April 5. The only thing that could make it more perfect would be a Joe Biden walk-on at Radio City as the administration's representative to the benefit.
"I don't understand it so it must be stupid!" You wingnuts are so predictable!

I was doing some of the ommmmm stuff while I was studying for the bar exam back in the seventies. When I passed, I at first attributed it to the TM part, but later I realized my success had actually come from the Ripple Pink Wine. I also thought some of these has-beens were good for the same reason. The I sobered up.
Isn't meditation supposed to make you go blind or make your palms hairy?
'Change Begins Within'
That's just what the aliens want us to believe!
How is this organization any different than some Christian evangelist ministry for kids? I see mainly two differences. One is rooted in American tradition, while the other was co-opted by a counter culture. One is focused on positive community involvement, while the other is focused on spiritual narcissism.
I'm going to love bringing this up to my lefty friends who like to go off on religion.
Well, go ahead and add all these people to my list of celebrities whose work I need to keep my children away from. That pretty much eliminates them all now.
TM for the masses might be a great idea.
Imagine if during the 9/11 attack we were all meditating. Maybe it wouldn't have seemed so bad!!
Where does the article say that TM would stop a terrorist attack? What did you do to stop 9/11?
How does your comment have anything to do with the article above? Unless you are saying you are only capable of one thought at a time. I agree with your stance on the Glass-Stegall act , but that is fairly easy to say today.
Thank you for a thought provoking comment.
You guys keep on dreaming and meditating. The rest of us will keep on working our butts off. Thanks.
Transforming Lives: The David Lynch Foundation provides funds for in-school “Quiet Time” programs utilizing the stress-reducing Transcendental Meditation technique.
I thought that we already had 'time outs'? Fast forward 10 years and we'll get kids interrupting their shift at McDonalds with a little TM because the fryer isn't working fast enough or the customer wants extra ice.
Hey jujube, I doubt whether McDonald's will take too many of these blissed out kids, it's a for profit organization that rewards hard work and initiative. Besides what if your mantra is tahko, or sobweh ??
"Ummmm…..Ohhhhh…….Uhhhhhh……."
I get it now!
Obama's meditating when he speaks without a teleprompter!!
Dude. I was being facetious.
Wow, great writing. Not only articulate but insightful and telligent. Thank you!
what's with these stupid ideas that predate christianity, anyhow?
bunch of superstitious crap if ya ask me!
now, let's all pray they go to hell where they belong.
I grew up in the projects. If I meditated for 15 minutes, I likely would have been killed during my bliss out time. I think a martial arts or reading so that I can get out foundation might make more sense. How about a "don't take that crack hit my bro" foundation>?
Oh, the humanity!
I am really glad that these musicians are coming together to bring awareness about TM and support David's efforts. I have tried many forms of meditation and yoga and TM is a high quality program and very different from anything I have experienced through any other form of meditation. There is clearly so much misunderstanding about the TM Program and a lot of unsubstantiated fear about what it is. It is not dangerous and in fact there have been numerous research studies funded by organizations like the National Institute of Health, which have shown that it is highly beneficial for people of all ages. It has been very helpful for children with ADHD and at-risk youth, particularly African American students who have higher instances of high blood pressure.
There have been several instances when TM meditators would do meditation projects in places that were very violent and turbulent. This has been done in countries that had a civil war going on and also in the Middle East. Maharishi, the founder of the TM Program, used to coordinate large groups of meditators that would enter an area to enliven peace in the environment. One study showed the results of such a project in Lebanon which you can see here:
http://www.permanentpeace.org/evidence/war.html
Those projects stopped because there was never enough funding to support a group in any one area and as soon as the meditating group would leave then violence would start again. So it is very apparent that in order to have a lasting effect and benefit for society there needs to be an ongoing situation where meditators can provide a very necessary function in society of creating peace …not only in their own awareness, but in society as a whole. It doesn't mean that every person needs to meditate!
Even just a few people or students meditating together daily will have a profound influence on others around them. And it also doesn't mean that those people need to be meditating all day long. Practitioners of the Transcendental Meditation Program range from a huge variety of people all over the world, but many are very dynamic and successful people. Like David, they credit their meditation practice for giving them continuous creativity, energy and deep rest which allows them to enjoy the high levels of activity which they live out on a daily basis.
Huge kudos to David and the all-star lineup of this concert!

Beavis and Butthead: "Vacancy in her….Huuh huuuh huuuh huuh huuuh."
I started TM in 1973 after one of my five college roommates was instructed. We enjoyed getting stoned in our free time. One by one we were all initiated after we discovered it was better and cheaper than smoking pot. After a few months we realized experiences of clear thinking with a lasting euphoric state were a side benefit of meditation. It keeps getting better over the years and I still look forward to each meditation. The religious aspect is non-existent and perpetuated by people who fear living in general – TM is endorsed by priest's, rabbi's, minister's, etc.
forgive this person lord – for they know not what they say!
you do not know anything about this organization and what they are doing. If you had a clue, you would stop making such unbeleivably foolish remarks about a great cause. Keep your overblown, ignorant opinions to yourself next time so that you don't make a total fool of yourself!
Forgive him lord for he knows not what he says. You really should keep your ignorant comments to yourself. They make you look like a total stupid head. You know nothing about this organization and the great work they do. You are pathetic!
you really should keep your stupidity to yourself – very foolish comments!
sorry to spark such emotions- we actually do know all about TM (Martial Arts Expert) and there is nothing ignorant in our take on the subject at all; we suspect it is you who are intolerant which would fit the mold… Intuitive psychics are wary of TM and think it to be a mature adult activity- surely crystal worshippers such as yourself believe, truly believe in psychic contact and the spirit world. There are evil spirits…
-It's 2010! -and Hollywood is on financial all fours before the direct heirs of the most genocidal regime in

Meanwhile, the once promising, long rich and decades stale David Lynch continues to bore us with his
humdrum 70's art-school 'inspirations'.
