On the night of Barack Obama’s historic inauguration, FRONTLINE examines the rich personal and political biography of the 44th president of the United States. Through interviews with insiders and observers who’ve tracked Obama from his days at Harvard Law School, through his rise in Chicago politics, to his emergence onto the national scene after the 2004 Democratic National Convention, FRONTLINE chronicles Obama’s meteoric rise, pushing beyond the headlines to reveal how he won one of the most memorable, and important, presidential elections of our time.
“Dreams of Obama” is set to air at 9 p.m. EST (check local listings) Jan. 20 – Inauguration Day.
Now just imagine a “Frontline” special like that greeting President-elect George W. Bush on his first day in office eight years ago. Yeah, I can’t, either.

Fair point re Bush. Tho’ I’m assuming you didn’t make an effort to see just what the press coverage was like after his election — the real problem, of course, is the Florida mess and the way G.W. ended up at the oval office — but I’d guess it was not as harsh as you think.
However, I *do* know, full stop, that the dreaded librul media was all over the Iraq War at its inception — as in fully and vocally supporting every move the Prez made. You remember that, yes?
As for ‘fair and balanced’…PBS is doing a piece on Obama that will run on Inauguration Day. Now there’s plenty of time for hard-hitting reporting that you agree with. But geesh, it seems like that might, just might be the one day when we can all bear a little biographic hagiography. You know. In order to appreciate, however briefly, our new president. Whose election, as you may have heard, has some historical ramifications.
Also? There isn’t a single falsehood in the paragraph you reprinted. JFTR.
Please even if Obama had come out of the same voting mess the press would still be fawning all over him. I guess we must have been watching different news, the press never supported the Iraq War. Try and explain it away all you want but the press has completely gone of the deep end in it’s love affair with Obama. The fact is they would never have done anything like this for Bush and your attempts to explain it away fall apart when viewed through the last eight years and last year’s election cycle.

I wonder how many of those Special Edition Obama plates and coins PBS will be giving away during their pledge drives over the next four years? The parents of those Obama singing kids from the video we all gagged at during the campaign probably have enough tote bags so the plates and coins will be a nice addition to their homes. Something the kids can look at and get inspiration from when doing their homework.
PBS’s mission SHOULD be to broadcast symphony orchestras, ballets, and operas to homes that cannot afford to attend in person or pricey pay-per-view. It’s non-cultural broadcasting is mere “Stuff White People Like” (ala the website and book by Christian Lander).
Sigh.
There is a role for PBS, one that actually adds value and enriches peoples lives. This propaganda is not it.
This Frontline piece will only be relevant if it includes Rev. Wright, Pfleger, Rezko, Blago, etc. And I’ll really believe they are an investigative enitity of any merit if they get their hands on BHO’s college grades and reveal them.
Oh yeah and I wouldn’t mind seeing the dinner he and Khalidi attended that the LA Times didn’t release.

Where to start? Now, I’m no scholar of history, but what qualified this past election as one of the most important presidential elections? Other than Obama’s race, of course — because, aren’t we as a nation past judging a man by the color of his skin?
Oh I plan on missing that for sure.
Will these be a 30 second commercial? The title seems appropriate; all dreams and no accomplishment. Do you think they’ll show his college transcripts and disclosure how he paid for that college education?

“rich political biography”? “paper-thin resume’” might be more appropriate. At least that statement and the truth can be said to have occupied the same room at one time. “rich political biography” doesn’t even occupy the same buliding as the truth.
And “most important election of our time”? If ever a statement was in need of the perspective that several decades can bring, this is it.
More fluff and genuflection from a fourth-estate-turned-eager-propaganda-arm. I am not sure exactly what the press is getting for the ongoing reach-around, but for their sakes, I hope its enough to make up for the lost credibility and declining sales numbers.

My vote is to cut funding to PBS. Until we have gotten our country out of debt, this nonsense should not even be considered anymore…
I’m not sweating it. Whatever remains of the country after the unholy triumvirate of Pelosi, Reid, and Obama will surely discover that if those three are the answer, then the country surely misunderstood the question. We just have to endure a few years of the machinations of people who do not understand taxes, economics, and who confuse “public service” with “self-service”. I think we can make it, and the words “Never Again” will carry a different, but no less important meaning for a few decades more.

Harley is correct that press release paragraph does not contain any falsehoods. It does, however, conveniently leave out a tremendous amount of information: Rev. Wright, Fr. Phleger, “Prof” Billy-the Bomber-Ayers, Rezko, Khalidi, etc., etc., ad nauseum.
Clearly, PBS is taking the same tack as Chris-Thrill Up My Leg-Matthews, i.e., they will be working overtime to make sure that Obama succeeds; an informed public be damned.
For the sake of argument, lets grant that media didn’t do its job vis a vis Iraq. All that does is prove that Main Stream Media, of which PBS is a large, tax-payer supported part, is more than willing to tell only the stories power brokers want told.
As far as the MSM is concerned, Obama is, without a doubt, the most worshipped, and least investigated candidate, I’ve ever seen in my lifetime.
I’m and independent that is economically conservative and socially liberal on some issues, but I do have to admit that Obama could do no wrong in the eyes of the MSM. I can’t wait to read Bernie Goldbergs book, “A Slobbering Love Affair: The True (and Pathetic) Story of the Torrid Romance Between Barack Obama and the Mainstream Media.” Should be a great read.
OK I have to say it, the leftists that are posting here now are either r no more than a 3rd graders and considering their refusal to have a discussion, and the rants about the President, that may all be true, or we have a bunch of special kids who got loose in a Best Buy. Who the heck was “inspired” by Bush? And moreover, what about his story– growing up rich in a political family, dodging real military service whilst abusing alcohol and cocaine, drying out after failing at several major business ventures then finding fundamentalist Christianity on his way to becoming president due to a supreme court ruling which goes against the very nature of our legal system (cannot be used as precedence??? that’s EXACTLY why we have a supreme court!) — would make it good for this kind of soft-journalism?
I’ve a vision of Obama sitting in the Oval Office on January 21 and Michelle saying, a la Oliver Hardy, “this is a fine mess you’ve got us into” or as Robert Redford says in the last scene of The Candidate “What do we do now?” I can also see a downward spiral beginning around June when those who voted for a pop star instead of a president start to realise that their idol, like everybody else in politics, has feet of clay. It stuns me how many people believe he is, as some fanatics called him “a chosen one”, “a redeemer” instead of a slick politician who played the game skillfully from his days as a “community organizer” to his election in November. And when people have expectations that they’ve put Jesus Mark 2 in The White House they’ll feel a profound sense of disappointment when he doesn’t deliver and that disappointment can easily turn to anger. It will be interesting to watch his apologists and propaganda in the media spinning.

Rezko (in case you don’t know) is a convicted felon, long-time Obama fundraiser & contributor, and made millions through contracts steered to him by Obama in the Illinois Senate.
Oh yeah, don’t let the fact that hundreds of poor minorities suffered in Rezko’s slum apartments that eventually were condemned cause any Liberals out there any concern (after all, some people just have to suffer so we can have the salvation of “The One”). Many went without heat for an entire month in the middle of one of Chicago’s famous winters (then again, since we’re in the midst of Global Warming, I’m sure it wasn’t too bad for them).

If PBS manages to include folks who knew Obama well at Columbia, I’ll be impressed. The girlfriend he claims to have given up would be major get, so I doubt we’ll be seeing her any time soon.
The blurb suggests we’re no more likely to hear from anyone with less than complimentary observations to make than we have been since his opening red state/blue state speech. But considering how many people reported that Obama had asked them to stonewall the press till after the election, there should be no shortage of folks who have never been interviewed before.
In the unlikely event that Obama has trouble finding the time to keep his memoirs up to date, the media seem only too eager to take up the slack.

Did Obama get elected fairly as a nomination or should’ve Hillary gotten the vote? Why or why not? What has Obama done that was important in his past that I should care about? Something that he intentionally did.

I never said that Palin is “stupid”. She did go to five colleges in six years in order to get a B.A., and never really adequately explained that. But, to address your other Palin obsessions, in order:
1. No one is obsessed with Palin’s uterus. The only people who talk about that idiotic Trig rumor is Andrew Sullivan and right-wing bloggers. Personally, I believe Palin’s story that she got on a 10 hour plane flight after her water broke carrying a special needs baby.
2. The Bristol Palin story was newsworthy because Republicans tried to shove abstinence only education and restrict access to birth control. Bristol was a case of “reap what you sow”.
3. The clothes were a pertinent issue because Palin’s carefully crafted “one of us consignment Mom” image sort of takes a hit when you go on a six-figure shopping spree at some of the finest stores in NYC. By the way, can we see the tax receipts of all the charities she allegedly donated the clothes to?
4. Nicole, believe it or not, no one cares what Palin eats or cooks.
Seriously, the resentment and anger you people project onto your fellow citizens is kind of scary. I guess that’s why you constantly champion such mediocrities as Palin and Joe the Plumber as the ideal Americans. Maybe if you guys hated yourselves just a little less, you’d view the world with a little more common sense.
In my opinion, Palin had more balls and represents the majority of us than ANY of the candidates. It’s obvious why the liberal media continue to tear her apart, she’s real and a threat to their agenda.
PBS commentators said they will make sure Obama’s presidency is a success, as did Chris Matthews. What does this mean?
Will they continue to cover up for him? Not report on anything that he screws up? I suspect so.
We are the only ones that can bring about change, and that is for us to call them out on their one-sided news, stop watching, or stop buying what they advertise.

Regarding PBS and the bailout – maybe Gwen Ifill can donate all her earnings from her new book to PBS. After all, PE Obama just said we all need to “make sacrifices for the greater good”.

The Archdiocese of Chicago have substantiated the claims against him. Do ya think he knew this? Do ya think after 20 years, he knew Rev Wright spewed racial hatred every week at the Trinity church in Chicago? Michelle Obamas college thesis is available online. Why hasn’t the new messiah released his college thesis. The Obama fanatics will give him a pass on everything, as they beleive he can fly, then nose dive into the ocean and swim underwater from Los Angeles to Hawaii while saving the Whale. But the point is that the media made sure to investigate everything about Gov Palin while ignoring the background of our next president. As evidence look at how all the stories about the corruption in Illinois that Obama came out of but somehow was never a part of. Those media bulldogs really made sure the voters knew everything there was to know about Obama didn’t they?

“Frontline” has already written President George W Bush’s history and Chaney’s history in thier left wing version; “Frontline” propaganda. I stopped watching PBS and have written to my congressmen to limit funds to PBS because of the slander. I hate to think that our tax dollars are supporting the crap they put out about history, conservative people, global warming, etc.. and misrepresent it to be FACT.
Fox News is the fairest, we need a Network that does not have a political agenda,
FOX and AFR radio seem to be the best in my judgement.
The media, fair and balanced? Sounds like wishful thinking to me! I’d love to see it too, but don’t hold your breate. They are a joke, it’s really no surprise to me how the election turned out! The sheeple are in the palm of their hands. This is but only one example of how our taxes are being wasted on garbage. I think they just may succeed in taking down this great country…what a shame!!!
Hey, does anyone remember the Frontline documentary “The Jesus Factor”? It was a rather flattering look at how GWB’s faith informs his political stances. They interviewed a bunch of Bush advisors and evangelical leaders. Of course, this doesn’t fit into your narrative of “PBS hates Republicans”, “The media hates conservatives” and “everyone is against us”, so I’m sure you’ll just ignore it.

NPR is another liberal lovefest that needs to go away or support itself. And, the left talks about bringing back the “fairness doctrine”? Gimme a freaking break.
Here’s the irony about Obama. He’s getting nearly every thing he wants. Cooperation from the left and right. The Republicans arent fighting him on anything and probably wont. So, Obama basically has free reign to do whatever he wants when he gets into office. Its going to be interesting to see the excuses he comes up with when he can’t produce results. He cant blame it on the evil Republicans not cooperating. They are bending over backwards to help him. My guess he will bash Bush for at least two years saying “things are much worse than I ever imagined” and claim that’s why he cant get anything done.
I do find it telling that his apparent first act in office is to close Gitmo. Way to go! Then what? Where are all these terrorists going to go? Release them so they can rejoin the fight?
America wanted the “historical” moment of electing Obama. Great, we’ve got that. Now he needs to be a leader. Being President is not easy and is more than just getting a cool place to live, picking out a dog for your kids and having your mother-in-law shack up in the White House.
Sometimes I feel like I am living in an alternate universe. What was America thinking? Gore is looking like an excellent alternative right about now! Ditto for Kerry.
