The Actress in the Glass Booth
by Cheryl Felicia RhoadsVisiting Washington DC, I had asked an orchestra leader at a hotel restaurant, if I could sing Bibbity, Bobbity, Boo? Only four years old, I stood on the stage, singing a song about magic. My show business debut came as a shock to my family, who hadn’t noticed that I’d quietly slipped away from the dining table. Sometimes, I have a tendency to spring things on people. Later, when working in the entertainment industry, I shocked non-family members with my worldview. But when one is an actress and a conservative, there’s just no easy way to break it to some folks. So one time I was at my agent’s office for a voice over audition, I asked to be heard in more ways than one.
See – there was this anti-President Bush stuff plastered on the door leading into the recording booth. It had been there awhile, and I had tried to ignore it. Weeks before, I’d been waiting along with another actress for an audition. We’d been having a pleasant chat, when suddenly this woman dove headfirst into an anti-Bush diatribe! Stuff like that had been happening more and more. And I began to dread going to auditions there.
Finally, I was called for a commercial promoting the famous cemetery to the stars, Forest Lawn. Wishing I’d been around for the old Hollywood instead, I started to obsess about the Anti-Bush signs. So I prayed a second. And as fate would have it…at that precise moment, down the hall, but well within earshot, my agent loudly declared something to the effect of “These insufferable Red-State…God people” (profanity “etc”). I glanced upward and whispered “Thank-you.”
I went and stood at the agent’s door. He was with another client, but spotted me and laughed “We were talking politics!” I replied, “So, I heard.” Then I smiled, “Can I talk to you a sec?” The actor bid us a good day and my agent leaned back and sighed, “What’s up?” I took a deep breath and gently…I began to tell him.
I told him I’d come to audition for a commercial, only to be distracted from the task at hand. Each time I’d come to his office recently, I was being continuously assaulted with vociferous viewpoints opposite to my own. But I added that whatever one’s politics…the relentless and overt contempt for then President Bush (and “office decorations” to that end), was just not appropriate in a work environment. It was his agency, of course, and he could say anything he liked, but we’d had a good working relationship for nineteen years…so, I needed to say something!
At first he simply stared at me wide-eyed. Then his eyes narrowed as he airily claimed to be unaware of any political signs in the office. Now look – this man was the owner of the agency, yet he didn’t know the terrain. But if there had been a “Support Our Troops” sign, I assure you he would have been aware of that! He also knew he had loudly used unflattering words to describe people…like me. Due to this bizarre bubble that so many in the entertainment industry exist in, it simply hadn’t occurred to him anyone might be offended by any political propaganda!
Afterwards, I still had to go back to the booth and audition for the Forest Lawn Cemetery commercial. Later, another conservative actress felt that would now be an analogy for my dead and buried career at that agency, too! Perhaps, but then again, I’d recalled a line from the film, A Man for All Seasons. When a court social climber Master Richard Rich, betrays Sir Thomas More in exchange for being made the Chancellor of Wales – Sir Thomas rebukes him, “Richard, it profits a man nothing to lose his soul for the whole world… but for Wales?” (So concern about a mere voice over job also seemed trite.)
Nevertheless our conversation ended friendly enough, even though my agent still didn’t seem to get that show biz companies are not think tanks for government policy!
But, I went and completed my audition and that was that. And here’s the thing, a few days later despite my actress pal’s dire predictions – I was actually called in by that agency for three more auditions for just that week alone. Plus, guess what? Upon my return, I discovered that every bit of political paraphernalia had been taken down!
So prompted by a higher source one may suddenly be cast to play a role other than what one had in mind.
Now I live Washington DC where I first sang Bibbity Bobbity Boo. I still perform and I mentor those who are now coming up the path. In following the next indicated action, I always seem to have access to the appropriate audience. And, I always caution students to be wary of exchanging one’s soul…not for Wales… or voice over gigs! With faith and hard work one shouldn’t need to worry about being PC to have a show business career.
Oh and I forgot to mention something… as it turned out, I booked that Forest Lawn commercial! In fact, it paid my rent that month. So…talk about your Bibbity Bobbity Boo! All things considered…that really was a bit of magic!

Great article, and once again proving a recurring reality in my life – all the conservative women I meet in shobiz are beautiful, brilliant, and brave!
It takes courage to stand and be heard! Good for you!
Ain't that the truth.
Gosh, I hate the "speaking truth to power" phrase, but it stands here. You had something very real to lose. Inspiring. Also, kudos to the head of that agency to hear you and do something about it.
Simply amazing!
I would have thought your career as over. I worry for Gary Graham and others in similar situations.
Believe in prayer. I suppose God has had enough, too.
Bravissima, Ms. Rhoads!
Mr Graham has had a successful career, and can now speak out… it's the one who are trying to make a name for themselves who have to worry. As one closeted Hollywood conservative said, "Conservatives are the new gay"
in Hollywood…
…beautiful, brilliant, and brave…
–and good writers, too! Well done, Ms. Rhoads.
Great stuff, Cheryl! We miss you in Hell-A…
Conservative women are so dang impressive. Nice job. You did what you knew was right, what God was obviously prompting you to do, and He, in turn, took care of the results. He's rather remarkably awesome that way.
Cheryl,
Fantastic! Good for you!
I work for a major entertainment corporation here in the heart of New York City, so I know what it is like to be a stranger in a strange land. But, my experience has been very much like yours. Rabid liberals who are emboldened by their numbers are very, very often silenced when confronted. Especially, by a person who is calm, rational, informed, and simply not willing to sit quietly by.
The level of conservative hatred runs high in NYC, as we all know, but I have also found that I am able to change people's opinions of us Righties. Not that they change their views, no, they still cling to their Che T-shirts and kaffiyas like I cling to my guns and religion, but they see that I am not a greedy, woman hating, poor hating, gay hating hater. …The sad thing is that many of these people have NEVER had a serious conversation with a conservative. That is the size of their bubble.
So, well done! And to every one else… SPEAK UP!!!!
I salute you for speaking your mind and getting the point across! AWESOME!
A similar thing happened to me recently: the Indian Mom-Pop grocer I go to put up a cartoon of shoes being thrown at President Bush right in front of the main cash register, in such a way that anyone making a purchase at that store would see it & know how awesome the proprietors were for hating Bush.
I politely but affirmatively told the owner that in America he is free to put anything he wants anywhere he wants, and customers would have to deal with it. But, I said, in America that means I am free to not come back to your store ever again, because you seem unconcerned about offending a thrice weekly customer of his family for over 10 years.
A week later I went back to the store and the cartoon was gone. If its hanging in the break room where the employees can laugh about it, thats great. God bless em. But at least I dont have to have it shoved in my face every time I go to the store to get my groceries on.
It will be interesting over the next few years to see what signs these same people post about the Obama administration. Let's start with "You don't mess with Joe" at "what was the number of that web site".
Ms. Rhoades – my sincerest congratulations to you for your honor and integrity. Thank you. I am an aspiring screenwriter and some day soon I will have to confront Hollywood's political bubble the moment I wipe my sweaty hands and clear my throat to begin my pitch. And I just know that during this meeting will surely come up that dreaded Hollywood leftist expectation that I will be expected to go along with – if I want to exchange my soul for Wales. Thank you for having the courage to show that this isn't right. You're right. Thank you and God bless.
For eight years liberals have screamed that Bush was shredding the Constitution, spying on everyone, throwing random people in jail and having them tortured, and destroying the earth. Can you imagine a world with no liberals? Where people have intelligent, adult conversations and do the right thing just because it's the right thing to do? That has to be what heaven is like, a place with no liberals.
Ms. Rhoads, here is a quote I found to be helpful during my many years in sales management and for life in general: "If we take people as we find them we may make them worse, but if we treat them as though they are what they should be, we help them to become what they are capable of becoming." – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
I believe you, Ms Rhoads, demonstrated the application principle of this quite well.
JohnJ, I like your Heaven! Let's fill it with converted liberals.
I like Wales.
Reasonable people will respond to thoughtful dialogue, even if it differs from their beliefs. Everyone else, well, you just do your best. Interesting post, Cheryl!

I second… wait, third… no, fourth? is that right? fourth? oh well, I agree with what's been stated above.
I loathe the arrogant presumption of so many lefties that everyone they meet and talk to shares their values and will just shut up and bear it when they start bashing conservatives for little or no reason. And sadly, too many of us do shut up and bear it. Admittedly, it's no fun to end up in arguement after arguement with mean-spirited people, but I think if they got told off sometimes, we might have a little less.
BRAVO. Well said. Although, I must disagree to a point. The hollywood Bush haters are more than that. They're small minded, narrow minded, idea bigots who hate anything or anyone who doesn't agree with them. It's more than Bush, it is, unfortunately, a pathology.
I had become concerned that the people were just going to accept all of this without a whimper.
Imagine my surprise when I heard a roar. Small, a little uncoordinated, but a roar!
I hope one day even Mr. Wrestling IV can remove the mask and be himself.
Fight the good fight, my friends!
Can you imagine a world with anti-Obama stickers and posters? (If we wait long enough, sometime over the next four years after he's stumbled often enough, we may begin to see some.) Something like that here in DC is an invitation to have your car keyed, at least, if not open yourself up for violent physical attack. We have a little something on the books called the "Hatch Act" that is supposed to ensure that public servants leave their politics at home. Interestingly, many don't and are not called to task for their transgressions for some reason. But then their displays are all Dem stuff. I'm sure if any Rep propaganda appeared, the offender would be excoriated.
Mah-velous, just mah-velous Ms. Rhoads. Man oh man, those stickers are just insanity. Satan? SATAN?
Is it wrong for me to say that I would have voted for Cheney/Satan over Obama/Dumbo?
Fantastic post! Allow me to merely say, "Bibbity Bobbity Boo!"
The level of Bush hatred (or as the great Charles Krauthammer, a board certified psychiatrist put it so pithily: 'Bush
Derangement Syndrome') is something that has not been seen in ages… Nixon, Reagan were unliked and Bush 41
was made fun of, as was Ford- but nothing even remotely approaches this. One feels for Ms Rhodes, because in her community it is a fait accompli' that one hates W, just as the sun rises from the east and the latte' must be a double expresso shot… however, like the hugely misunderstood and underappreciated Harry Truman, whose Truman Doctrine was completed by Reagan and ended world soviet-style communism (at least for a while, anyway)
Bush and the Bush doctrine, which is remaking the middle east right in front of our eyes, will be remembered
fondly by history.
Freeing 50 million people from tyranny tends to do that do that for you…
What probably went through your agent's head was the fear of losing you. A person's value tends to go up at the prospect of her absence.
Brave and delightful!
Sounds like a job for that musical parody master, Paul Shanklin.
Imagine there's no liberals,
It's easy if you try…
Hey Andrew, don't feel badly, I voted for Cheney/Satan, TWICE! I feel so sorry for those of you that have to live and work in the hostile environments that you do. It reminds me everytime I log onto BH that being self-employed, and living in a red state makes my life so much easier. Great story, Ms. Rhodes! Continuing good luck to you.
Right. Isn't it hilarious that those complaining about people who believe in God, self described atheists, often use Satan in their descriptions of conservatives? What's with that?
Brava! I work in German theater (which spits on everything clean) and often quietly leave the canteen table when Bush-bashing begins (or sometimes merely avoid the canteen altogether). But, with your inspiring example before me, perhaps I should recall the lesson we learn somewhere around 2nd or 3rd grade: stand up to bullies and, like as not, they may back off!
However, let an approving word be said about the agent who reacted by removing the "office decorations", despite his conflicting political opinions. His act required no courage, but it is commenable nonetheless.
Took my dog to a groomer about one month ago; she spouted something about change, and how happy she was, etc. about O – guess she wanted same reaction from me, but no – out of respect, just kept my mouth shut! When I got to the car with my little guy, noticed that his neckerchief was red, white & blue with "democrat" all over it – quickly ripped it off in the car; kept thinking, what nerve she had to ass-ume that her customers thought the way she did. Maybe I should have said something, but sometimes what's the point? So glad you said something – that alone should inspire people.
My now departed blind dog was definitely NOT a democrat . When I would watch the news with her in my lap, she would growl every time John Kerry would speak. She was a very smart dog.

That's what I worry about. The "had".
I wish conservatives had outlets for our art like the screwy libs. Not libs in general, this time. Some things do have to be confronted; liberal, conservative, libertarian notwithstanding. But the other stuff is like being downwind when the sanitary bilge is being pumped out…
Cheryl, you may be a fine actress (I don't know, as I've never heard of you before, as is the case with just about everyone who posts here), but you are one of the stupidest idiots I've ever had the misfortune to meet, however, virtually.
Wow, I hope the Hufpo folks don't pay you for that one. Pathetic. Put some heart in it dipsh…
eBay. You should see the stuff!
I bought t-shirts with this on them:
"It's 3AM and your children are safe and asleep…
but there's a phone in the White House and its ringing…
Something is happening in the world…
Don't you wish Ronald Reagan was answering it?"
America at its best. Find a need…fill a need!
19 years in the business and you're auditioning for a cemetery commercial. Time, perhaps, for a career re-think, no?
Well , I haven't paid rent for a while now, but I seem to recall that paying rent for me entailed much more effort than standing in front of a mike for a few hours and speaking. I think Ms Rhoades is doing well for herself.
Then again, I have respect for anyone who is working and paying their taxes.
What about you Gergiev? Care to tell us something about your life so that we can criticize your life choices?
