You missed the best connection – most people don't realize that Sen. Boxer, as a youngster, was forced to endure luge lessons, summers in Rangoon and, when insolent, was placed in a burlap sack and beaten with reeds.
You can call me Joe,
or you can call me Mo,
But you dont have to call me Ms. Sentorette Ma'am
I work my butt off to get you common people to bow when I enter the room.
Respect should not only be earned, but given freely. When she has to resort to a little "catty" game, she looks like a fool (oh, my mistake, she is a fool.)
Elsewhere in the blogosphere I just read a story someone related about working in the drive-thu at a fast food place and a woman got so angry at being called "ma'am" that she parked her car, came back, and punched her two or three times in the face.
I *don't* get it. There really are a lot of people who don't want to be called "sir" or "ma'am" but I think that's their problem. It's courtesy and it's *military* courtesy, in this case. Sir and Ma'am is what you call anyone who outranks you, which a Senator certainly does… and which also includes all civilians. Certainly Boxer knows that. Certainly her little "correction" was all about control. Certainly the general was addressing the male Senators as "sir", and certainly the male Senators worked hard for the title of "Senator".
What the hell does she mean worked hard? She doesn't know the meaning of hard work.
And in the spring, she made meat helmets.
Come on, gang, we can do the whole speech!
This is just an embarrassment to women. I doubt any male senator would object to being called "Sir". She could have said it in a much more respectful way-for instance by not interrupting him. What a petty jerk. Her anti-military attitude is probably at the root of this -right? Would she have said that to President Obama? This reminds me of the "Liz" email going around. Manners, people! Get over yourselves!
We all know how we'd like Boxer out, but boy, does Chuck DeVore have his work cut out for him. Not because of anything else but the huge amount of money spent on Democrats in "Kulifornia". It's amazing.
The CA GOP seems to not be able to get out of it's own way as well. No offense to Mr. DeVore (don't know enough about him yet), but why hasn't California been able to run ANY viable conservative candidate against Boxer and Feinstein in the past? I know it's about the money, but jeez! They (conservatives in the past) seem to just collapse in debates or in the charisma department. Sometimes both <sigh>.
Sorry, it's just a bit frustrating living in California right now. Rant concluded.
Anybody got a clue as to what's negative or demeaning about ma'am? I guess there's more power or something special in a woman being called Senator than being called ma'am. Her churlish reaction set back serious professional women by at least 50 years. Who knows, maybe she was just feeling vulnerably girlish or something.
Nothing negative about it. In fact, the preferred way for military officers to address their superiors is sir or ma'am…not their actual rank.
The fact that Boxer either didn't know that (bad) or choose to ignore it and be a tool (terribad) shows just how stupid she is.
Cranborn, I've always assumed Boxer, excuse me, 'Ma'am', oops. Me bad. And excuse me… 'Senator Boxer' was bouyed by her check-in-the-mail constituency. Something a true Republican (read Conservative) cannot compete with. Which also begs; what exactly has 'Senator Boxer' worked so hard at? If promising people a check-in-the-mail is "hard work", then, I've been on Mars.
I dunno, something about shorn something sort of creeps me out – I can get on that wall, just not sure I want to be on that wall.
/mixed references
Preach it, brutha!
(from a fellow Tennessean)
Boxer is a real turkey. Hopefully the good people of California will politely show her the door – all while calling her "FORMER Senator" – a title she has REALLY worked a long time to earn.
She is working hard – at becoming a FORMER Senator.
Boy did she ever make an a@@ out of herself! What a tool. I'll be the first one to stand up for mistreatment or slander of women, but this is just ridiculous. As I understand it, Ma'am is perfectly acceptable. Babs comes across as petty, insecure and totally rude to the General. She doesn't even deserve Ma'am. Somebody had their panties in a bunch.
With Harry Reeds?
The real test will be to see if the people of California will win the title of "Stupidest People in the Nation" if they re-elect that horrible woman to the senate.
Actual rank is what you use to address those subordinate to you.
Here I thought "senator" Boxer was Dr. Evil.
Boxer is an embarrassment. I would like say what else she is – but I can't because I'm a Christian.
Oh. come on! Just go to confession after. God has a sense of humor. You know he does. What else could explain a community organizer as President……………………………
If she expects respect well then, why does she so often like like an unkempt bag lady? Does she ever comb her hair?
At Blackfive.net a former Army officer explains military culture and courtesy.
Boxer actually interrupted General Walsh to insist that he address her with LESS respect.
To which he graciously complied.
I don't think there are any more viable conservative candidates in California. This state has crossed the point of no return in the Red vs Blue tug-of-war. At some point, the Blues realized they could win elections by promising to take money from the Reds and give it to the Blues. So they got elected. So some of the Reds left the state and the Blues won more elections. So, the Blues had to take more money from the remaining Reds to keep their promises to the Blues. So more Reds left and the Blues kept winning. Repeat ad nauseum.
I keep thinking that at some point the Blues in California will realize that they have to stop driving out the Reds. But, if they haven't figured that out by now, I don't think there is any hope that they ever will.
I hope Chuck proves me wrong. But I am not holding my breath.
Actually I do have a clue. "Ma'am" is a term used by traditionalist. It is a flashback to the days of "please", "thank you" and all that is manners. In my part of the country, you can find your fanny warmed up for not saying "Ma'am" or "Sir" when speaking to an elder. Basically "Ma'am", whether you are a Yankee or a Reb is a tradition. I do not think Doctress Evil is one of those tradition lovers. I believe she thinks "Ma'am" is a sexist term. Restrictive, and all that the NAGs, (National Organization of Gals-El Rushbo lingo), would loathe and despise. Insert anti-feminist curse words here.
The second level to this is Doctress Evil does not really like the military. I give you her record. And the lack thereof as well. When the real Dr. Evils, a.k.a. John Murtha and Harry Reid, (may they rot in hell), were lying their crap weasel asses off about our beloved military, I do not recall Doctress Evil coming to the defense of our military. She wanted to humiliate this man, and bring him down to her level. Folks, the radicals are out of the coffins. These people believe Barack Obama's election has given them a lifetime supply of "Get out of Jail Free" cards accompanied with the license to finally say, what they have wanted to say, since they could say anything. And they wonder why some of us second guess their patriotism! *(Note, not all Democrats are like this, and for my purpose here, I am only referring to those who even sane, patriotic Democrats know are scum.)
Since Doctress Evil does not like the military, it does not register with her the relation of the military to civilians. My understanding is that military members speak to civilians with deference, and respect because it the civilians which employs them. I believe an actual military member could explain this far better than I, but think of the saying, "for King and country". We removed the "king" part, and the military thinks of country as the people. When they call us "Ma'am" or "Sir" it is purely out of respect, and actually the highest level of respect. Doctress of the most Evil, in all her years in the Senate, apparently did not read this memo along with anything else which has come through the office she only holds via elections.
Peace, and prayers to those under her "title".
So far the title belongs to the people of Pennsylvania who re-elected Murtha after he insulted them.
Which is actually the beauty of the whole exchange. She asked him to demean her and he complied. I hope that someone took her aside after this and briefed her on military etiquette, so that she won't be so stupid in the future.
Don't be fooled. This was nothing more than Ms. (won't call this dolt Senator) Boxer's ONCE AGAIN attempt to kick the General's former Commander-In-Chief, George W. Bush in the teeth for his handling of Katrina.
Keith Olbermann isn't the only one who can't let Bush go.
Nope, just Dr. B*%CHY!
She won't take the lesson to heart. That's the thing about liberals, they think they already know everything. Anyone who tries to tell them otherwise is either wrong or evil.
I wish he would have called her "your highness". ANother arrogant lib who bought her way into her "job" and claims she had to work to get it. Just like little ""Prince" Al Gore, who followed his daddy into the family business.
Nothing like an article to create an outlet for GOP frustrations.
I hope you find this opportunity helpful in your pursuit of therapy.
Barbara Boxer is a shining example of a dull-witted Democrat, the queen of victims, fearless leader of the loser parade. The people of California must be so proud of their representation in the Senate. Thanks a pant load California!
That didn't last long.
Haha!
Race
hell, after pennsylvanians re-elected murtha it's going to be quite a struggle ..
It should be noted that the BG earned the Bronze Star (TWICE), the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Airborne tab and wings, the Ranger tab, four Legions of Merit and other lesser awards. His military education includes Engineer Officers Basic and Advanced Courses, U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and the U.S. Army War College. And what PRECISELY does Boxer think that she has done to earn his or any other person's respect? ____SUA SPONTE
You gotta remember Barbara Boxer was able to get a throng of brain dead democrats to vote for her, quite an achievement, you could say she’s a master of fools.
Paraphrasing Auntie Em(?):
"Elmira Gulch… For twenty-three years I've been dying to tell you what I thought of you!
And now… well, being a Christian woman, I can't say it!"
Hey – it is Big Hollywood!
A few days ago I left the Philly airport on a flight to Munich Germany. While in the airport. A U.S. Soldier (in uniform) happened to come into the same magazine shop as me. I confronted him and thanked him for his service to our country. His response was thank you "Sir"
Ms. Boxer was just plain rude. Rudeness is petty and unacceptable. She was on a power trip and was belittling the Brigadier General. Not good form Ms. Boxer, Ma'am.
YAY, another arrogant politician! Lets kick this one to the curb!
Boxer is infected with the sickness "divine right of democrats".
Well if they don't cross back over, there will be no state to govern.. The blues have succeeded in running out business, is killing the viable crop industry, and has now bankrupted the state. How much more destruction must happen before you loose your only money making industry Hollywood and the music industry before they get that you can only draw from the well so many times before it goes dry and there is nothing left but dust…
The Queen of England gets called Ma´am. Naturally, that is not good enough for Boxer.
Somewhere online is a reference where this is a plot point in an old episode of "Gomer Pyle, USMC". Female Gomer was working with in the episode wanted to be called "Captain", her rank, rather than "ma'am". So it dates back even farther!
Barbara Boxer had no problem being called "charmer" or "a cutie" by Barack Obama. Check out the youtube video. I think she just doesn't like to me called Ma'am. Or maybe she doesn't want to be called "late for dinner".
