Honoring September 11th: Frank
by Chris BurgardFrank Munoz was a good guy. When he was a teenager, he worked hard to straighten his life out. He went to school. He got married. He got a job. He took good care of his mom.
Frank Munoz died on the 73rd floor of The Second Tower on Sept. 11, 2001.
For days after 9/11, his family searched the hospitals because some sick person put his name on a fake Internet survivor list.

I didn’t cry for him until two years later when my wife and I stood at the edge of Ground Zero.
Afterwards, Lisa and I wanted to get a burger. A block away, we walked into a bar called O’Hara’s. On 9/11, O’Hara’s had their windows knocked out and the building was covered in debris.
We sat with two electricians and Con Smith, the owner until closing time. The guys had worked on the pile every day until it was gone. They still sit together like ‘Nam Vets do 40 years later.
This September 11th, I will fly on an American Airlines plane. That is my own personal “F**k Y**” to the people who killed our friends. I know it isn’t much.
I am going to DC because I like the way we came together on 9/12/01. I want to be around other people that feel the same way.
I wanted to be able to write something really profound, but all I can think of is that I wish my friend Frank was still alive.

I don't know any of the victims. But I know some responders.
To say September 11th changes everything is true for me. I changed careers because of it.
I am physically unable to be in the military, but I work in Homeland Security and Disaster Management now.
Mr. Burgard, I wish Frank were still with us, too.
That moment still takes my breath away, and though I was more than six hundred miles from Ground Zero the aftershocks were felt in my life. God Bless America!
Blessings to you, and all survivors.
Never forget.
I had the honor of writing about Stephen Lauria on my blog. Stephen was on the 97th floor of Tower 1 on 9-11. It was a sobering yet fulfilling time for me to get to put a human face on this vile and repugnant act that was 9-11.
Chris,
I'm so sorry for your loss. And you did write something profound.
"Profound" means 'heartfelt, intense, earnest, sincere.' Your words evoked those emotions in me.
God bless America, may we never forget.
I will always remember the anger I felt over what happened….
And yes you wrote something profound…..
Simple and from the Heart…… Frank is OK, and you will see him again soon!!!!
You did write something profound.
To this day, when I see video of the planes hitting the towers I cry. 9/11/01 was the first day I was glad my father was dead. That day would have broken his heart and I am glad that he didn't have to see it.
I'm sorry that your friend was taken from you in such a pointless, brutal way. Our thoughts are with you and the families and friends of all the murdered today.
And hopefully you'll stay in DC for the Tea Party tomorrow. Many of the reasons for the need for the Tea Party were created on 9/11. "American liberalism distanced itself from American patriotism," and as we distance ourself from those liberals it's important to stand on a hill somewhere and call out to our brothers to join us and take back the country and make sure it will be safe for our children. Y gracias por la viaje a Honduras. Viva Honduras y Viva MIcheletti !
profound and powerful.
thanks
2996, 2996 thats the number of Franks we lost! Thats the brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, aunts, and uncles we lost. Never to be forgotten. God Bless you Frank.
God Bless America.

I mourn them all. God Rest Their Souls. I especially remember the children on those planes. It's too much.
God bless the victims, God bless the survivors, and God bless America.
Today is the one day on the calander that means something to me, and as you said Chris 9/12/01 was a day that should matter the most to everyone, a day we should all strive to return to, the day we all came together regardless of race, religion and political party and we became what the Founding Fathers had dreamed, One Nation under God, Indivisable. Let's get back to that day and never leave it again.
The clueless administration and their enablers are not doing the kinds of things to keep another 9/11 from occurring, period… and their dismissal of the War on Terror as some quaint irrelevancy from the Bush era is sheer insanity.
When it comes to doing the right thing vs shameful appeasement he mistakenly believes will soothe our enemies, it's not a call that this opportunist coward Obama has to think about for five seconds.
Their disdainful treatment of the heroes, victims, and lessons of 9/11 will surely come back to bite this country.
And Israel, you'll be on your own for a while…

9/11. so much is held in those numbers. i feel anguish for those who lost their loved ones, but am also overjoyed that mine got to come home.
honestly, today as we remember the blood spilled on that horrible day, my concern turns to what is happening within our borders, within this administration, and my anger rises again. no matter how they try to reframe what happened, i for one, will NEVER FORGET.
god bless us all.
And Obama "honors" their memory by hosting a Ramadan feast with al-Qaeda's fellow-travellers. Disgusting.
Sounded profound to me.
Within a few weeks of 9/11 both clinton and obama blamed the United States. Never ever vote for a democrat.
I remember driving my 2 kids to the sitters house, here in AZ it was the 5 AM hour, shaking my head all the way not understanding what was happening, until the 2nd plane, that is. I am a vet so patriotism is a big part of my family, but every year I remind my children of the INNOCENT AMERICANS that lost their lives that day and the many brave military men and women who have lost theirs since in sacrifice to our country. We will never forget, and are grateful for stories like yours, Chris, of your friend Frank.
GOD BLESS ALL, and GOD BLESS AMERICA
and seditious in a sane world…
Thank you for this. I've written my own personal remembrance here:
http://www.ex-united.com/united-airlines/remember...
We must remember and pray for the victims and their families. The story of Deora Bodley (youngest victim on United 93) and her father is especially sad and touching.
Next, we as a nation must vow to never again let ourselves become something worse, for what we've suffered. If we do, bin Laden wins. We must unite again, and be "that shining beacon on a hill" for the rest of the world. God bless.
Amen!
I hear that Bohemond…
Then he spends 10 minutes at the Pentagon shaking the hands of family members at least….. now it's off for some hoops.!
Excellent post and echoing "Stay Classy"…" God bless the victims, God bless the survivors, and God bless America".
My brother called me 9-ish San Jose time and said "we're at war". I gave up my career a month later, but no loved ones. Oddly my 9/11 happened in Beirut years before where my brother was an embassy guard and so 9/11 wasn't as big a surprise as it might have been, though I admit to saying to myself even back then; "Finally, now we'll deal with these f***ers"..
Today I woke up and scanned the channels for a few minutes and sure enough, 4, 7 and 9 had some tennis talk and weather info and not a peep about 9/11. Fox is the only channel that is covering that. I was reading about Lawrence yesterday and "Don't give up the ship" as I like to do when I have free time. Not many countries have as brief a history as ours and none have as rich a history either.
God Bless America.
There are more memorials from the readers than come out of the White House. All they want is a National Day of Service.
I remember seeing a 60 Minutes special not long afterwards where a bunch of Palestinians were out in the street celebrating the news of 9/11. This may not have been the healthiest reaction for a 13-year-old but what I desperately wished for at that moment was to be there with a gun so I could kill every last one of them, children and old women be darned. Oh well, it's still kind of comforting to know one day they'll be burning in hell with their hijacker friends and wailing over their own foolishness.
I am sorry for the pain and loss you feel…thank you for sharing your story. We must never stop remembering what happen while moving forward! Peace be with you !
You're a good man, Chris. Thanks for sharing this moving piece.

Mr. Burgard, I wish Frank were still with us, too.
I wish all they all were.
As an 26 vet from Pan Am & 13 year vet from UAL, I understand what you wrote.
Two things that I will never forget are the sight of the UAL plane hitting the tower and the dead silence at LAX for the days after the attack.
I will never forget!
I am wearing a Red dress shirt today to remember all the others who couldn't be with their friends and families. Too many people don't want to remember.
I wrote about Paul Bristow, Ollie Bennet, Neil Cudmore, Dinah Webster, Mitzi Sperando, David Rivers, and generally about the 16 coworkers of my husband who were lost that day. My husband was supposed to be with them at Windows on the World for a conference his company was hosting. May they all rest in peace and may we never forget those who did nothing more than go to work that day and for that they were brutally murdered.
Every year this day is the same for me. Can't get through it without shedding a tear or two for all the Franks of that day.
Too many good guys died that day, unfortunately.
so true, never forget, never forgive, never *move on*…
Amen Chris.
Mr. Brugard,
If you have the time, I am writing Mr. Munoz's biography for Project 2996 and would appreciate any information you may have about him. If you don't have the time, I completely understand, but if you have a word or two you might be able to contribute, I would greatly appreciate it. His bio online is a little thin and I would like to do him justice. Thanks for any help you may be able to give. Christin

Frank was my cousin. He went straight to heaven that day. Frank is a saint to me.
