Swine Flu, Fences and Farces
by Chris BurgardI just saw Sen. Joe Lieberman on Fox News. He wanted to explore the possibility of closing off the Southern Border with Mexico as a safety precaution while the US got a handle on the Swine Flu situation. The World Health Organization had just upped the health threat to 5 out of a possible 6. Vice President Joe Biden was on national television telling America that he would not let his family travel on an airplane. However, the Obama administration would not even entertain the idea of discussing border closure.
Could that possibly have anything to do with the fact that today Chuck Schumer, Harry Reid, Patrick Leahy and President Obama are steaming full speed ahead with a new push for comprehensive immigration reform? Sen. Lieberman expressed his hope that DHS Secretary Napolitano would at least keep the idea on her radar if the situation turned into a pandemic.
Millions of people illegally cross our Southern Border every year. Many of those are lured here by the promise of free and superior health care. While tracking smugglers in the Arizona deserts, we often found diabetic medication, syringes and other evidence of poor health among those crossing into the US. The strain on our health-care system is enormous. While Mexico closes its schools, government and urges people to stay indoors, the United States couldn’t close her border even if she wanted to.
Make no mistake, our border is broken because the businessmen, narco-terrorists, politicians and special interest powers that be, want it to that way. But even if the American citizenry rose up in such overwhelming voices as to affect a 180 in Washington, the fence would not stop squat.
According to CBS News, it has cost 1.2 billion dollars to build approximately 600 miles of border fence. They predict it could cost 50 billion to finish and maintain that fence. After spending that kind of money, it is no wonder most Americans have been lulled into a false sense of security. While the fence has increased security in high traffic areas like California’s Imperial Beach, it does so because it acts as a force multiplier. You still need adequate forces on the ground to go after the shifts in human traffic.
On Jan. 23, 2006, after Mexican military humvees crossed the Rio Grande into Texas, local authorities asked the US Federal Government for help. Firstly, the Federal Government wanted to confiscate all copies of the Sheriff’s video footage of the event. Secondly they built a fence. They built a fence in the wrong place. This segment of the border fence stops 500 yards short of where the Mexican military crossed into the US. Should the Mexican military decide to do so again, the path is still open. Not only that, but the three miles of fence that has been built, has three gaps in it big enough to drive a truck through. (see photo) Someday there may be gates at these gaps, if they can figure out how to make them light enough for female agents to open. Until then, these gaps have well trodden paths leading down to and across the Rio Grande into Mexico.
This section of the fence was also designed to be portable in case of flooding. The cement sections can be moved with a large forklift or bulldozer. It just so happens that there is a bulldozer right across the river. This dozer has been aiding smugglers for years. Sheriff Arvin West of Hudspeth Co. has even put out a bounty on the vehicle.
In the same area is an unguarded footbridge and a cable car, with the car waiting on the Mexican side. There aren’t even any surveillance cameras at these locations. The bushes on the Mexican side of the footbridge are littered with layup areas where human traffic and smugglers wait till Border Patrol clears and they can safely cross.
I often wonder why the same images of the fence are shown over and over on the MSM, while the images that the border locals are familiar with are still such a secret.
Make no mistake, if I was a Mexican national and one of my kids got infected with Swine Flu, I would be the first making a bee line to one of those gaps. I don’t blame any parent for wanting to save the lives of their children. That would be an illegal, but honorable act. It is dishonorable for Washington politicians to create the illusion of security while leaving American citizens unprotected from foreign threats.

Even though I haven't fully recovered from Joe Biden telling me that the only safe way to avoid the swine flu is to hide in my refrigerator for the next month, I am still concerned about the border. Lieberman must have had a moment of revelation which overshadowed his sure knowledge that neither party has any intention of effectively stopping the flow of illegals, drugs and now contagious disease across the border. Janet Maximilian Carlotta Napoleon will certainly be of no help. She might go so far as to send the National Guard to the border to hand out cards which tell our permanent visitors how to say "I am an American citizen, and I know my rights" printed in Spanish and English. But that's about it.
Cris,
There is so much hoopla about the border and security. This took away from the real terrorists-the bankers and mortgage lenders. I don't hear of any of them going to jail. Get with the real issues. The majority of these illegals are not here to mooch off of our healthcare system. They probably built your house and kids school plus keeps us from paying $3 or more for a head of lettuce. This exhorbatant waste of money for these fences (you know the 'good ol' boys' are getting these contracts) could be used to help Mexico in their infrastructure and give them jobs there.
Did you eat the worm at the bottom of the tequila bottle you just polished off before writing that incoherent crap? I particularly like your essay on how it is our responsibility to help the chaotic, thieving government of Mexico to build their infrastructure and provide them with jobs there. If our illegals are so useful, wouldn't they be of even more use in their own country, doing the jobs they do so well while rebuilding their infrastructure?

Way ta' go, Joe! I loved Gibbsey's tortured (oops!) explanation of Joe's statement. "what he meant to say was that if you have a cough you shouldn't get on the subway." Uh, no…not even close, Gibbsey!
Obama and his ilk have no interest in alienating the voting block that could keep them in power indefinitely… first got hooked up to this on this blog: http://publius772000.wordpress.com/2009/04/27/amn...
Chris,
Being an expert on the boarder maybe someday you could shed some light on why we allow our laws to be trashed the way we do. We have/had an e-verify system that was over 99% effective and yet we want to trash it. To me this issue at a government level is more than just cheap labor. There is something else behind this. I just do not understand the logic behind our lack of enforcement on this issue.
Leave it to old hairplug Joe to give me tips that are relevant to anything. You know that illegal immigration…sorry, newfound citizens for the democracy is going to pass in some form. Now that rubberstamping is the rule, it's just a matter of time. If we are lucky to wrest control, what a mess it will be to try to right all the wrong. Where should one begin?
Are you saying that you don't find Gibbs's English language translation of Bidenese comforting?
Sorry for the double post. This site has some problems, doesn't it.? When I could not find the original post anywhere, I redid it, and ended up with two. But it took half an hour to figure that out.
Rupert, take your racist stuff somewhere else. So what, I'm sure white people and black people and latinos built his house. Latinos living here legally deserve a secure border as much as anyone else. Latinos that were born here or also lose jobs to illegals. And in fact, by letting people come here, Mexico is allowed to keep its corrupt government and not serve its people. So why do you hate latinos so much. I live in a latin neighborhood and noone here is for open borders so why are you? So take your racist stuff somewhere else.
I have spent some time in southeastern AZ, and let me tell you it wasn't the bankers that had me locking and loading before driving on back roads at night, it was the drug runners and Mexican mafia which went so far as to light fires in the Coronado National Forest to distract law enforcement to make windows for runs over the border. And yes they will shoot at you, make no mistake about that.
I for one am taking Joe's advice and sealing myself and my family in a airtight ziplock bag. Sure this will kill us, but the upside is we won't have to hear from Joe "Let me explain that remark" Biden again.
One other thing that seems to be overlooked in this mess is that the vast majority of Illegals are involved in the food service or agricultural industries. Am I the only one that see's this as a pontential problem? What if Joe is right and someone coughs on my bacon cheeseburger? Guess I should also stop eating. Great diet idea though.
Hmmm…Strange and unusual: http://www.cafepress.com/swineflushop
Rupert's monumental idiocy notwithstanding, the loans that were being defaulted on that gave us the current financial meltdown were *made* to illegal aliens. Way to miss a clue, genius!
Meanwhile, illegal aliens are coming to Southern California ERs in droves because of the swine flu. Just like they do 24/7/365 fo everything else, without paying. So much for "not impacting our healthcare system."
Amnesty on the way, again. 1966, 1986, and 2009. Hey why not, the good things in life are free, right?
What a dolt you are. Have you figured out what illegal means? Think about it, kinds of slowly, but please try.
Yup! Free for the lazy!
I agree, as do both my Latino sons-in-law and my lifelong best friend who all descended from Mexican families who came here legally.
I have no illusions about where the left leaning "representatives" of our government wish to take this country. This was my whole argument back during the election. It didn't matter which democratic candidate won the election we would still be faced with renewed efforts to force new "comprehensive" (i.e. camouflage) immigration "reform" bills down our collective throats. 12 million instant democrats to strengthen the democratic party's full nelson on our nation. At every turn we see a clear invitation to anarchy made by the left. They profess to want diversity and all the while encourage racial groups like NAACP and La Raza to wage culture wars based on perceived ethnic disparities ranging from social to financial. Ironic isn't it? They very harmony they claim to seek is undermined by their advocation of cultural, social and sexual diversity. It seems financial diversity is their primary enemy and what better way to force financial equality to the masses but to relieve them of every trace of wealth, that is except for those who sing your praise like those people in North Korea.
I do not quite understand why our country would want to spend money helping Mexico with its infrastructure as well as funding jobs for Mexicans when our own rate of unemployment is soaring. Perhaps you could explain your reasoning on that if there is a rational reason. I think the $3 head of lettuce has been debunked also.
If the immigration laws are to be ignored, why not the tax laws. To my way of thinking, I have paid my last tax bill. Shoot, obeying the law is for suckers, obviously.
The defenders of the illegals have all kinds of reasons why the law should not apply to them.
As my brother (the reired warden) tells, me, "everyone in jail is innocent. Just ask them!"
There are plenty of Mexican immigrants who went through the system and came here legally. They work hard, pay their taxes, obey the laws, and often fork over a good deal of money to get citizenship. I guess the joke's on them, isn't it?
If only I could use the "We Pick Your Fruit!" defense on my parking tickets!
If a growing pandemic isn't reason enough to close the borders, why have borders at all?
I have a sort of personal boycott going, When I see a store posting the "no concealed weapons" sign. I go in and tell the manager/owner I will not do business with him/her. If I could figure out a way to do the same with illegals, I would. I get some strange looks on occasion, however it is "Priceless"
If the East Germans could build a fence to keep locals in, then the Americans can build a fence to keep illegal immigrants out. Where there is a will, there is a way.
It's o.k. that you double posted, Everett. I think it needed to be said twice, maybe more. I think his worm was dipped in some sort of hallucinogenic before he ate it, also. Not here for health care and government bennies? Dear Gaia at the stupidity of some people! Yes, some people do come for work and a better life, but they are also criminals when they cross the boarder illegally, and should be treated as such. It is all about the benjamins.

The reason the libs wont ever close the borders is because that WANT the Mexicans here. That's going to be their labor force once they try to annihilate the middle class. There wont be anything left except the rich and the poor, no in between.
Do you mean that only SLAVES will be workers??? Then if you don't work, you don't eat or get a place to sleep??? The rich will have access to all the bounty and beauty of the United States and the slave workers will be confined to slave camps??? Is that what you mean???
Nope, that's not what I mean at all. I'm saying that there will be NO middle class. The poor will still be allowed to work, just at a LOWER pay scale because they will be so grateful just to have A job and to be US citizens that they wont care. Just so long as they're allowed to exist.
