We the People Will Power this Country
by Chris BurgardThe nine most terrifying words in the English language are, ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help.’ – Ronald Reagan.
My ancestor Francis Lightfoot Lee, signed his name on the Declaration of Independence. Let me tell you what – I pay a lot more in taxes than Uncle Francis ever did. If he’s up there in Heaven looking down on all of us American taxpaying citizens, he’s probably thinking, “What the hell are you guys doing? This kind of taxation without representation is not what we intended. This is not why we made America. This isn’t the legacy that we wanted to leave for our children.”
On my Dad’s side, Great Grandpa Frank was a farmer who lived in an enclave of Germans and Jews in Odessa, Russia. He fled Russia and came to America in order to escape the Communists. I know Grandpa Frank is up there watching us even now….and he’s probably thinking: “Gott in Himmel. Vas es los?”
This isn’t the America he first saw when he stepped through the doors at Ellis Island. You work hard. You make a little bit of money, and then you give it to the government for the bankers and your neighbor’s mortgage? In the old country, if you didn’t work you didn’t eat. In this country if you don’t work, they give you a check.
Not too long ago Ireland had one of the worst economies in Western Europe. So what did they do? They cut the corporate tax rate to 12 percent. This attracted new business from around the globe and in less than a generation Ireland had the most raging economy in all of Europe.
I live on a ranch and a ranch can use a lot of electricity. My wife and I routinely had to contend with electric bills in excess of a thousand dollars – even more in the summer if we splurged on air conditioning. So Lisa and I budgeted and saved in order to install solar power. Last fall President Bush signed legislation allowing Americans to deduct one third of the cost of a solar system. The dream of making our own energy became our reality. President Bush’s tax stimulus was the help we needed to be able to afford to be green.
My wife came home the other day and found me standing in the backyard staring at the electric meter. It was spinning backwards. Really fast. It was cool. I felt happy. I felt little kid happy. I remember thinking the birds sound prettier today, the flowers smell sweeter and Saudi Arabia and Iran can go to hell. I’m making my own energy. Next year we hope to buy more panels and an electric car. If we do, it will be powered by energy we made ourselves.
President Obama, without giving my elected representatives enough time to read it, you pushed through a plan to use hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars to make the US greener and safer. Please don’t take our money. You tell us you represent the change we need, well then how about this? Give a 100 percent tax rebates to every American household that goes green? If you do that then We the People will power America.
If you really want to stimulate new business and create green jobs, give new entrepreneurs a five year moratorium on their federal taxes. Drop the federal corporate tax rate to 12 percent — just like Ireland did. This won’t cost you a dime. Free enterprise and American ingenuity will bring our economy back.
We can do this, Mr. President. We are Americans. Let us keep our money and we‘ll get ‘er done.
Mr. President, I’m not saying I’m as smart as Tim Geithner, although I have read “Turbo Tax for Dummies,” I’m just saying let us decide how to use our own money and maybe my Uncle Francis can stop rolling over in his grave.
Thank you. God Bless.

Too much common sense and it lacks one important thing that is necessary for Democrats, CONTROL. It has never , ever , ever been about helping the environment it has always been about CONTROL. Any program that gives more control/power to Govt. is a program the Democrats can get behind. It si because they believe in thier hearts that Government is the answer to all our ills even when Government failures have been the reasons for almost all the ills we find ourselves in. Here is a novel idea replace the Government, all of them.
This country doesn't suffer from "taxation without representation". This country sufferes from apathetic and uninformed voters. Americans today can't do simple math, don't know world history, don't have a basic understanding of science, can't read, can't speak, and can't think. They aren't aware of current world or domestic events. Teachers can't teach. Parents don't parent.
Americans recently elected a new President based on his skin color, not to mention a poorly-defined concept of "change" and "hope". And it's not just presidential elections. Our leadership at every level is riddled with corruption and incompetence, yet not enough people know or care (or care to know) enough to make the tough choices and make a change.
No. Our voters are represented pretty accurately by this country's elected leaders.
The biggest way to gain control is via war. Still have the IRS withhold money from your check? That was a temporary wartime measure. And that is a small example. Patriot Act and the creation of Homeland Security is another. They are trying to whip us up to fight another of Israel's wars in the Middle East. I say it is the duty of every patriot to resist that by any means necessary – it only benefits the bankers, MIC, and Israel.
Solar power is exciting, but you should also keep in mind that (for now) it costs more to research, develop and manufacture a solar panel than the value of the electricity that panel will produce in its lifetime. If it wasn't for governmental subsidies and tax rebates, it would be cheaper to forego solar power and just use the grid.
Saudi Arabia and Iran provide very little of the oil that's turned to electricity in the USA. Most of our oil comes from North America. Saudi Arabia and Iran aren't impacted at all by your use of alternative energy.
We'll never be able to lower taxes anywhere until we force our leadership to stop wasting money.
Rexter, you're not as informed as you think you are. The dangers in the Mideast affect the entire world.
DHS was created because the existing agencies weren't doing what had to be done in the face of a threat that's been evoloving for decades (if not centuries). The Patriot Act details how this country has to defend itself in a new age of terror.
If you don't recognize the danger, then step aside and let those of us who do take care of business.
Well said, Bobo! You've hit the nail on the head. We get what we vote for.
The only real threat posed to the US is via 1) immigration and 2) trade. Yet, the globalist whores running this country will not curtail EITHER. They haven't the slightest concern about your security. They care quite a bit about acquiring power and with useful idiots like you it is quite easy.
You do love coming back to Israel. Try another tact, as we getting boared. Having said that, you point on the withholding tax is spot on.
You mean you don't value skateboard parks and money for the ARTS??????????????????????
Man, you are some feelingless machine!
Hey, Chris – I am an ancestor of Harry Lighthorse Lee – Cousin!!!! How are you? It must be in the genes because I am right with you! Let us do what we do best! Let me have more of my money and I will stimulate the economy. Why is that so hard for these idiots to understand?
The solar power rebate that Bush signed capped the rebate amount at $2000! So if you buy a $25,000 solar system, it's really on an 8% rebate. I'm sure the $2000 helped, but I don't know about getting "little kid happy" over it.
Then, after he was a lame duck, and trying to secure his legacy (good luck with that one), he signed a Democratic Congress' plan to remove the $2000 cap.
The other suggestions you make are too vague – what exactly an entrepreneur is, what "going green" means, etc. are completely subjective. Instead, I would propose making all fuel in the United States a small percentage biofuels – 5 – 10%. Anything beyond that risks affecting food crops (assuming soy and corn are used as the feedstocks). Just this small amount would be a healthy reduction in pollution, dependence on foreign countries, and exporting our spending. Biofuels aren't going to replace petroleum any time soon, but by getting a small amount blended in preserves vehicle warranties while providing lots of green jobs and other environmental benefits.
Congressmen need raises, too!
As someone living in a state with a mandated ethanol blend in all our gas, I would advocate against that suggestion. My husband and I both have substantial commutes, and the ethanol blend shot our gas mileage in the foot by a good 3-4 mpg. It's not a good thing to go from getting 30+ mpg to getting less than 30 mpg without fail, and with BO's energy plans the way they are looking, we live in dread of gas prices shooting back above $4/g again. And with our commutes being highway, a hybrid car wouldn't help either of us.
There is no zero-sum gain in any of this. When you save at one end, you pay at the other. Always. Its like conservation of energy in physics, the costs don't gain or lose, just change form.
That said, there is no reason to put in geo-sourced heat pumps, solar, biofuel, wind, hybrid, etc. I wouldn't mind geo and solar in my house. But there is no reason I should ask or make any or all of you pay for it, either. And using food agriculture to feed an internal-combustion engine is moronic to the extreme.
Use what makes sense for you, not what DC, or even what your state thinks makes sense. If it really works, the marketplace will reward it, more demand will lead to more production, economies of scale will come into force, and we'll all look back at the old way and remember what it was like to have a VCR, too.
I'm always amazed that the democrats constantly blind themselves with their own ideology. They want money to do all kinds of things. It's been proven time and time agan that when you cut tax rates, the government gets more money. Yet, they despise the "rich" (read: working people). So they refuse to cut tax rates to spite the rich, and in the process they deprvie themselves of billions of extra dollars they could use on whatever projects they want.
In hindsight, maybe that's a good thing?
By the way, Chris, one thing I have to disagree about is that I don't like the government trying to modify people's behavior through tax policy anymore than I like them doing it through regulation. I would rather we had a small, flat tax rate, and left the decision to go green to individuals. As you've clearly demonstrated here, when it makes economic sense, people will do it.
Seconded. My car used to get about 350 miles per tank, with 10% ethanol fuel, it gets around 300. I didn't see any drop in prices when the switch was made from pure gasoline to the mixture, either.
And most people have a conscience. I'd love to have solar cells at my house, and I'd love to refurbish the old broken down windmill at my house and put it to good use. But, that's prohibitively expensive, even with tax breaks. A $2000 rebate does a person no good when they don't have $2000 to begin with.
You lost every lib at "I live on a ranch…" They can smell the burgers and they are pissed!
I don't give a flip about the environment. However, your argument about letting us use our own money to get America out of the mess that franks and the dummycrats got us into is right on.
And the chosen one is messing up nine ways to Sunday:

Sadly Bev, they understand all too well. They prey on the taxpayer to fund and promote their giveaways for all thos too lazy or ignorant to get off their dead asses and actually DO something.
I agree, and when they make the tax rate on your gas high in order to force you to drive less or conserve or use public transit (doesn't work in the urban sprawl cities of the Midwest, btw) and then the tax actually works, they start to lose tax revenue. Being government, they can't just adapt to less revenue even though the tax was billed as a sin tax to begin with. No, they have to find other ways to punish you. This is where the idiotic idea of the GPS in everyone's vehicle to tax you for mileage driven instead of taxing for gallons of gas come from. We actually did what they said they were taxing us to make us do to begin with.
Just wondering what electrical appliances your ranch has ? Are you air conditioning the barn ?
You are right. We must raise their salaries above $250K. Then they can pay for their own programs through their own tax dollars. Oops, I forgot, most of them don't pay their taxes anyway.
Hey Jason, as part of the bailout in Oct '08 Bush signed an extension of the ITC and did in fact remove the $2000 cap allowing a straight 30% federal tax credit. Furthermore, the new administration has added additional incentives whereby business can receive a 30% grant up front in lieu of the tax credit and there is an accelerated depreciation. Business owners can realize payback in as little as five years while residential can receive payback in approximately seven. I know this to be fact as I am a solar energy consultant for REC solar and I run about 20+financial models every week and it always pencils out. If your electric bills are over $100 a month, solar is an absolute no brainer from a financial stand point, let alone the fact that it is just the right thing to do.
And the ones complaining loudest about taxation without representation are the ones who pay little or no taxes anyway.
WASHINGTON DC TEA PARTY
I sent the below letter to Barack Obama and my Federal officials and included a tea bag:
_________________________________
Mr. President,
As the early colonists of the USA did on December 16, 1773 I am starting a Washington DC Tea Party for the same reason as they did: TOO MANY TAXES. THE STIMULUS TAX INCREASE is the straw that broke the taxpayers back.
This is my token way of tossing YOUR TEA into Boston Harbor. I will be contacting as many people as I can to do the same thing if they feel the government is overtaxing us. We need TAX RELIEF, not a bunch of NEW TAXES. No reply necessary, except to start putting the taxpayer first.
___________________________________
I encourage anyone who feels the stimulus bill is the tax that broke the taxpayers back to do the same, and to send a tea bag to each of your members of Congress. Please pass this idea along to others. Send the president and members of Congress a tea bag, and include a SHORT, polite letter explaining why you are doing it. The address to send it to the president is:
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Ave. NW
Washington DC
20500
Hi… I would like to commend you for this well-written piece. I wonder, though, did you send/have you sent this to the office of the President? I think it's a refreshing take on his ideas for green energy and jobs. I'm no 100% treehugger, but I do like the idea of a clean and safe environment and I believe they're worthwhile investments. Also, you mentioned Ireland's demise years back and how they solved it, that's not a bad idea. I'd like to mention China and how they saved their economy, similar to what the Philippines did years back when they weren't a "third world" country yet… China and the Philippines "closed" their economies, creating and patronizing local products, and thus stimulating local markets. I wonder if that is possible or feasible for America?
Sweet list

Hello Guru, what enticed you to post an article. This article was extremely interesting, especially since I was searching for thoughts on this subject last Thursday.
