Bill Maher, Barack Obama and the True Story of American Exceptionalism
by Bill WhittleOver at the Huffington Post, Bill Maher is outraged that people like me are outraged at a statement made by Barack Obama a few weeks ago. When asked if he believed in American Exceptionalism, the President of the United States replied: “I believe in American Exceptionalism, just as I suspect the Brits believe in British Exceptionalism and the Greeks believe in Greek Exceptionalism.”
Bill Maher, never one to miss an opportunity to express his contempt for anything not Bill Maher, wrote: “Yes, our so-called President wrote that people in other countries might like their countries better… I was so shocked I nearly dropped the Bible I was using to help me masturbate into my gun.”
People like Maher use this kind of snark to cover the fact that either they have serious issues in comprehension, or, more likely, that they do not care for the lay of the intellectual battlefield and so want to move it to another, slimier, filthier one.
The question to the President was not whether or not he believed in American Patriotism – that is, the love of one’s country. Of course other people love their countries. But the idea of American Exceptionalism is a specific political construct, much like British Colonialism. I suppose I should have cut both of them more slack, unfamiliar as both hearts are with the feel of patriotism and faced with the clear evidence of lack of intellectual exceptionalism on both their parts.
Anyway, this has to be responded to: and never were there bigger fish in a smaller barrel. Many of the elements I used to make the case for American Exceptionalism I first used here at Big Hollywood in a piece called The Workshops of Identity. I opened those arguments up considerably, and the great thing about video [click image above to play] is the ability to include a lot of statistics and graphic elements to hammer home the point. (The list of American inventive genius in particular is a great deal of fun.)
At 15 minutes it’s a little long for the web – I know, you are shocked… Shocked! – but that’s how much data is in there. And you really can’t end a piece like this without pining for the days when a common citizen didn’t have to explain the idea of American Exceptionalism to the President of the United States, but rather the other way around. Hearing those words from a President who loved his country as much – if not more – than the rest of us certainly highlights just how far we have fallen and how much work remains for all of us to do.

As an expatriate American living in Canada for a while now (not by choice), let me tell you, there is PLENTY that is exceptional about America. There's nothing like living in another country to make you appreciate the U.S. even more. Maybe shipping Bill Maher overseas would help him gain some perspective. Maybe keeping him there would help the rest of us gain some respite from his particular brand of claptrap.
first thing i read saturday morning. great. now i need to pull someone's hair….HARD (sorry, while they may have serious issues with comprehension, i have serious issues with hair-checking idiots)
Bill Maher counts on all of us to vent about him and keep his name in circulation.I cancelled HBO because of him and I feel cleaner for it.I believe the best way to deal with him is to ignore him.
The more irrelevant people like Maher, Olbermann and Maddow become, the more outlandish they will become.
People obviously watch Maher for the rude comments, because it damn sure isn't intelligence. He has the temerity to call us stupid? He isn't even a good comedian, much less a commenter on things pertinent to politics, life, or vertebrate behavior in general.
He also misses the meaning of "gun control" if that is what he is using it for- there's a trigger for a reason, Bill- pull it while you are so engaged, and you will have an experience you will not forget, I'll bet.
Wow, Maher not only just got publicly embarrassed, but he's still 3'4" tall.
Bill, no matter how much you schmooze with the likes of Arianna & company, you'll still never be as good as your friend Dennis Miller. He has talent & can take any side and still be funny. If you decided to NOT be left-wing, they'd toss you overboard quicker than they did Cindy Sheehan when she was of no more use. Or, in short, you're a tool. A small one, at that.
Must be if his "manhood" fits in a gun barrel…maybe that's why he's so cranky…
I think you wife is beautiful and your children are brilliant—————lol!!!
Hmm, but what country do we despise enough to ship Maher to? Would we ever wish such a weapon of mass suction on even our worst enemy?
.22
I just have to keep repeating it: Obama and all who adore him, support him and think/feel/act like him have only ONE weapon in their arsenal.
Ridicule.
They cannot debate. They cannot defend their positions at all. They have no real passion, no sense of history, no framework with which to anchor their poor excuse for philosophy. They are inconsistent because they lack any anchor except HATE for that which is good. HATE for the individual.
Ridicule is all they have.
One cannot win a war with ridicule, and one cannot run a country with ridicule. One cannot retain power with ridicule.
Let's begin work today chasing the Left from all corners of our land. Out of the schools, the universities, the studios, the Capitol. This farce cannot be tolerated any longer.
Are you suggesting that Bill Maher is not the mental giant he thinks he is?
Man, you are attacking him right where it hurts.
Such a little man with little thoughts, and he isn't even funny.
Interestsing quality for a comedian.
Now, back to polishing my gun!
i was thinking .17 cal.
Dear Mr. Whittle:
Another masterpiece on the heels of your iconography video. You could have made this one a 10 hr. miniseries and barely scratched the surface. Thanks.
Well, Maher's comment was clearly insulting. However, it's unclear that Obama would disagree with the list of accomplishments Whittle provides in the video. From a foreign relations standpoint, Obama's comments seem designed to avoid perpetuating the image of US arrogance in the eyes of our foreign allies and other nations. That seems to be a reasonable endeavor. Yes, the US is a great country, an exceptional country, but the exceptional qualities Whittle lists in the video and which we are all proud of don't give us the right to be bullies on the world stage. Yet that's the perception other countries have of us. In order to improve international relations, i.e. repair the damage caused by the Bush administration, Obama seems to be trying to change the image of the USA in the eyes of other countries. I offer this as a more practical way to understand Obama's answer to the question of whether he thinks America is exceptional than the way either Maher or Whittle have done.
American exceptionalism is what allowed those two half-wits to achieve the level of success they did. One would probably be a goat herder in Kenya the other a small shopkeeper in Ireland, had they not had the fortune to be living in America.
BB gun?
America must be an exceptional country to be able to endure a sub-human prick who dwells majestically in the global sewer called Hollywood.
Bill Maher is only right about one thing, his audience is stupid beyond the realm of any reasonable measure.
so you are proud of what President Obama is doing to Honduras and Israel?
are you like Oliver Stoned applauding the death of formerly free Venezuela?
when our allies are consumed by tyrants will you applaud President Obama's smooth maneuvering?
the problem with Progressives is that they are sexually impotent which is why they need drugs.
North Korea…
Morning Andrew! These are sensible overviews that will fly past our leftist buddies ability to reason. You guys have had some great articles about America and American Exceptionalism and how to keep it that way over at Commentarama, …cool blog!
Morning Andrew! These are sensible overviews that will fly past our leftist buddies ability to reason. You guys have had some great articles about America and American Exceptionalism and how to keep it that way over at "Commentarama," …cool blog!
Mr. Whittle: BRILLIANT! I have never heard this topic explained in such a succinct and devastatingly (to the Left) accurate manner. Brilliant.
The only thing I would add is the old adage, "Where there's smoke, there's fire." Simply, how come we never hear lengthy discussions (among conservatives) or tirades (liberals) about Yugoslavian exceptionalism or Irish exceptionalism? In other words, if people are always debating it, there's a damn good chance there's something to it.
Anyway, great video! Thank you.
Thanks for the plug Stan (I'm glad you enjoy it!) — did you come vote in the poll yet? That should be interesting.
I agree that this will fly over the heads of our leftist friends. They believe in the theory of the "superior man." They want someone "smarter" or "better" than themselves (an "expert") to lead the rest of us. That's Euro-thinking, "benign despot" sort of garbage. It's also doomed to failure, as it has been for 10,000 years.
Fortunately, for the vast majority of Americans, that's anathema. As we've shown in a couple articles now, when you look at all of Rasmussen’s polls, you find that around 60% of Americans believe in the conservative/independent position. That makes me so happy.
You really expect our immigrant POTUS to believe in American Exceptionalism ?
You must believe he is a Christian also.
/spit
"Obama's comments seem designed to avoid perpetuating the image of US arrogance in the eyes of our foreign allies and other nations. "
And who, Derek, do you think perpetuates this "image of American arrogance?" If you took the time to do your homework, you'd discover that those charges of American arrogance originate from, and are perpetuated by–you guessed it, Leftist academics who subscribe to the "Critical Theory" Bill Whittle has so brilliantly explicated here. The same people like Bill Ayres and Jeremiah Wright who have shaped Obama's political worldview..
Obama's "reset button" foreign pronouncements have sent a powerful message to the worst players on the global stage–Iran, North Korea, Cuba, Venezuela, that we will not respond with force with any of their power plays. the outcome will be disastrous.
[...] More info here. [...]
They're only for liberty from the waist down; in Maher's case, also up the nasal passages.
Bill Whittle outdoes himself every week.
Bravo once again!
Derek you should have yourself a good cry.
That's what I was thinking.
This presupposes that I even care what the rest of the world thinks…
You ask me, the world needs to pull its angst-ridden head out of its collective a$$ and get with the program of liberty and freedom for its citizens, capitalism, high quality of life, and personal responsibility, before the US fully corrects itself from its flirtatious binge with socialism and decides to really become the shining city on the hill…
Because by then the rest of the world may be too far in the pit to bother with at all…
Thanks, Andrew.
You have provided in three paragraphs more wisdom and intelligence than 'lil Billy Maher has in his entire career up to this point.
The question is, why is HBO putting him on, instead of you?
Stupid HBO.
Bill Maher is a disgusting piece of psuedo-intellectual horse manure. I hear he loves on-line porn and prostitutes. Must really suck to have to pay for it, but take a look at him. Every time I see him, he reminds me of "Squidward", on the SpongeBob cartoon. All nose and forehead. Yeech!
Let them be trees falling in a distant forest.
Problem is, if we threaten the Norks with inflicting Maher on them as a permanent resident, they'll genuinely knock off their nuclear shenanigans and we'd have to keep Maher, unless Iran could be coerced in the same fashion.
Eventually, we'll run out of nuke wannabe's to threaten with him. I suppose that has a plus side…………
Janeane Garafalo = Bill Maher in drag? Or vice-versa?
Bill, I really appreciate your posts, which are so chock full of compiled and verifiable information.
Early on, the first fact one discovers about our "balanced" MSM environment is that conservatives are required to do their homework–to provide concrete instances and documentation, and liberals aren't. A Progressive can simply make up factoids out of thin air.
Thanks for your diligence and your clarity. I recommend your commentaries as a primer for learning how to articulate the conservative message.
Thanks Mjolnir!
You would think Maher and others might be able to figure this out, except that I suspect he's not all that bright or well informed, and what he does "know" comes mainly from people who hate our country. So it's probably hard for him to grasp this.
Bill Maher KNOWS he's a tool…
And is making a handsome living off of it. He throws these bombs in full awareness of the fact that the blogs will go nuts, it stris up the pot and gets his kool-aid fan base all giggly.
Best to ignore that which begs to treated so…

well written and essentially correct…
Pretty depressing to have our president continue to dwell on what's unexceptional about our country. I believe most citizens think our country's exceptional and our next president in 2012 will be one that does.
well put.
I agree. To this day, I don't know how or why he has a career. Being vulgar to him means edgy, but it really is just vulgar and shows a lack of talent.
Lets ship him to North Korea and then send George Bush to renegotiate his return. If that doesn't focus Maher attention on American Exceptionalism, I don't know what would.
That was like watching a video of the greatest hits of the old essays on Eject!Eject!Eject!. Excellent!
Netanyahu?
I believe the Prez didn't know the defintion of "exceptionalism" and I know for sure Maher doesn't….otherwise the fool would know that in no other country on this planet would he be allowed to live!!!
Never undeestimate ridicule as a weapon against the left. If more people laugh at Obama, the stupider he looks.
You know, I suspect that Bill Maher isn't truly an atheist. I don't think he's trying to tweak *our* noses as much as I think he has personal issues with God – like any kid who acts out because he's lacking for fatherly attention.
Remember Aesop's fable about the Bull and the Gnat? Bill can make all the noise he wants, but he's still far too small in spirit to attract God's notice.
Sad…
For the record, you can say "ass" here. You just can't say "an@lysis"…
I take exception to your characterizing fascism as a product of the extreme right.
If you built a continuum extending left and right from a "moderate" center, with the right representing small government conservatism and the left representing big government liberalism, the extreme right would be anarchy, not a fascist state. Fascists are leftist, big-government control freaks.
Good thoughts, Andrew. And yet, look at the congress our 60% majority has voted into office.
Good thoughts, Andrew. And yet, look at the congress our 60% majority has voted into office.
Are we just that stupid?
I've known quite a few lapsed catholic school boys in my day. Bill Maher is pretty much just one of them with his own show.
They never really get out from under the fear and guilt.
Old Tom, I think it was just a reaction to a total betrayal by the Republican establishment. We voted to the right and got huge spending, intrusive government, and a mismanaged war. Plus you add the corruption and the never ending string of sex scandals and that was a recipe for tossing the Republicans out — especially since many of the Democrats tried to present themselves as being "conservatives." But now people have seen through that one. If the Republicans can show that they again represent what the 60% believe in, then they could sweep back into power. Sadly, that's still only an "if."
Bill Maher is as ugly on the outside as he is on the inside, he is nothing more than a card carring communist as is the rest of Hollywood.
Nah. Netanyahu's got a pair like cannonballs.
Another reason (and further evidence) that America is exceptional. I'd be willing to bet a week's pay that there's at least one individual from every country in the world that has emigrated to the United States. We are truly a melting pot, and considering our cultural differences, the fact that we get along pretty well and aren't mowing each other down in the street is pretty darn exceptional too!
I've always thought that part of what makes America great is that exceptional people (intelligent, brave, ambitious, what have you) have made an effort to come here and make something of themselves. Their dull, lazy, and complacent countrymen (and women) never left their native soil. Kind of like the one kid in the family who leaves town and sets out to make something of himself…all his siblings whine and moan about how "lucky" he was and want all the things he has but don't want to break a sweat to earn them.
Bill Maher needs to wear more pancake makeup.
The damage Bush did to international relations? You know, the more time goes on, the more I learn to never trust the media. I remember a few years ago believing that Bush actually did harm international relations. But trhen I started actually reading foreign press and things changed. So let's go through the list shall we?
Several African countries now have official George W. Bush days, viewing him as a great hero for the African people.
India, Colombia, and several developing countries had extremely cordiial relationships with U.S. under the Bush presidency that only got better as time went on.
And most tellingly, for the first time in six decades, the majority of European countries (at least, policy making European countries) have openly conservative pro-American governments. Many (Berlusconi in Italy, Merkel in Germany, Sarkozy in France) ran on openly pro-American platforms, praising the U.S. the entire time and the need for Europe to "capture some of the American spirit" in M. Sarkozy's words. The few leftist governments in Europe (Labor in England and Salazar in Spain) are likely on the way out next year, if their opposition parties can ever get their act together.
So again, I ask how did Bush ruin foreign relations? Do leftist, communist thugs hate us? Oh yes, but they always did, and the more they hate us the better, as the more unpopular they become in their own regions. My girlfriend's Colombian and the amount of hatred for Hugo Chavez in Latin America is overwhelming. There's massive confusion there about Obama's stance on Chavez and Honduras. Oh, and by the way, her immigrant Spanish speaking parents love George W. Bush.
Dennis Prager also has a great simple look at American exceptionalism called "the American Trinity". Take any American coin and there are three specific things written on it that makes the US different than any other nation in the world. 1) E Pluribus Unum – from many, one. When you come to America, regardless of where you came from, you are American. Other countries, especially in Europe, have a major problem with immigrants not assimulating thus creating sub cultures which begin to tear apart the values that their host countries were created on. 2) Liberty – unlike countries like France that fought for liberty as in being "equal"..Americans are already born into liberty yet it is up to the individual to create their own achievements. 3) In God We Trust – not In Man we Trust, or In Government we Trust..man and government can take away rights they created..no one can take away the rights that our creator endowed us with.
What is exceptional about America is that so many idiots and fools can be elected to high office, become mega million media stars and fantasy dwelling movie stars. What is exceptional about America is how many Americans who have benefited from being American can hate it with such venom. What is exceptional about America is how so-called civil libertarians try to tread on the liberty of other people who may think differently. What is exceptional about America is how those who talk about Democracy have no idea what it means and try to subvert it by trying to trample on the right of their opponents to speak out or have an opinion. What is exceptional about America is that so many Americans are supporting ideas and policies that have failed in other countries. What is exceptional about America is that we elected a man as president without knowing anything about him or what he stands for
I think Bill Maher makes a perfect case for the Progressive movement. They are all for freedom of Sex and Drugs and they will let you know how you should live the other parts of your life. These folks are actually far more to the right than any conservative. That is why they seem to be Hypocrites in reality they are Progressives. They do not support or even have the slightest beliefs of the word Liberty. If you want to see a Progressive face turn RED and start CRYING loudly bring up the word liberty.
American exceptionalism is based on how we were formed and how we remain. On July 4, 1776, in Philadelphia, an extraordinary group of men, declared to the world, their intent to form the first government to be established by the consent of the people it would govern and which could exercise no power to which those people did not consent. In so doing, they gave the world its first free men since the dawn of man.
And that's how we have remained. All power in this country derives from the individual. Nowhere else in the world is that true. And that brings with it the freedom to dream, to achieve, and to fail. It's made us a dynamic and thriving people, and it's brought like-minded people to our shores like a beacon: people who want freedom.
That's what makes us exceptional. Obama and his leftist buddies may hate that, they clearly prefer dependence on the state, but Americans do not, as reflected in the outraged people turning up to protest his plans and his falling poll numbers. America, love it or leave it Barack.
"In order to improve international relations, i.e. repair the damage caused by the Bush administration"
Oh, please. All Obama has accomplished is to have allowed our enemies once again to despise us as weak and pusillanimous. Notice how Ghadafi is back to his old tricks, after six years of cowering? Saddam's hanging concentrated his mind wonderfully….
Do we really care if our actions meet with the approval of the Achmadinejads, Chavezes and Putins? Should we? Are you kidding? In fact, to what very limited extent should we really care what the America-hating twits of decadent, dying Western Europe think? One major ingredient in American exceptionalism – which is very real- is the realization right from the Founding that Europe is mostly wrong about everything.
"What matter if they love us, so long as they fear us?"
–Imp. Tiberius Caesar Claudianus
You're right that Bush guy did a bad bad thing in helping fight AIDS in Africa. How dare us exert our will like that on other nations. Bad Bad Bush. Blah Blah Blah.
Now Obama on the other hand sure helped out those Hondurans, starve that is. And his foreign policy on Israel is so kind to the people, he tells them they cannot build any more Houses. A true Foreign Policy GIANT.
This is the same tired, regurgitated argument used to defend Obama's "American Apology Tour of '09" that I've heard a THOUSAND times. Why does he have to "repair the damage caused by the Bush administration" by ignoring if not outright denying the amazing, incredible and awe-inspiring accomplishments of his country? Simple answer: He doesn't have to.
Obama could, like every other previous president, try to mend fences and reach out to other nations while reminding our neighbors that the our country IS exceptional and that we are here for them in their times of need (re: WWI, WWII, tsunamis, famines, etc, etc,). He could stress that our exceptionalism is a potent and powerful source of good that can be of benefit to EVERY citizen of the world and not just Americans.
The US has made mistakes in the past and it will continue to do so in the future. That goes without saying. That's because it's governed by imperfect human beings. That doesn't mean that our LEADER has to deny just how remarkable our oh-so-short history has been and denigrate us in the eyes of the world.
Again, Obama does not have to apologize for the US. He CHOOSES to. As pointed out in Mr. Whittle's video, Obama's upbringing, education and choice of mentors would indicate, to a reasonable person, that he truly believes what he says.
Obama is a leftist (and If you think he's not, your delusional). Again, as Mr. Whittle so clearly demonstrated, the typical leftist (i.e., Maher, Garafolo, et al.) have a deep seeded streak of self hate and utter disdain for anything which is decent or contradicts their warped political and social views. So, why do you and other Obama defenders constantly try to explain what he "really means" or, in your words what he "seems" to be saying? Why can't you be intellectually honest and acknowledge what is in front of your eyes?
I wish that I would not have to write something like this. And, I would imagine that Mr. Whittle would prefer if he did not have to make a video like this. I would love to be saying, "Boy, that Obama is a great president and a true patriot! I'm sure glad he's going to be our president for the next four or eight years because he definitely has our best interests at heart!" But I can't. Every piece of evidence points to the contrary.
So keep trying to spin what Obama says or does. Keep trying to ignore what is as plain as the nose on your face. In my 38 years on this planet, I've never been as worried about my country as I am now.
The only thing I feel for Maher is a mix of pity and indigestion.
Bill Maher is a loser. I choose to just let him fade into oblivion.
I'm 19, I have liberal friends who gush over how "smart" he is and I want to smack them with a copy of The Gulag Archipelago whenever they do so. The 90s had "Generation X"; we are "Generation Entitlement".
The fact is, of course, that Barry Hussein Soetoro hates America. He was brought up to do so- his is precisely the attitude of a post-colonial African apparatchik like Moi, Mobutu or Mugabe, blended with the Marxist street-pimping of a Van Jones
Yes, Ogabe hates America. Oh, he likes the real estate well enough, and the wealth (to be looted), and the power of his office- but the "America" he loves is the hypothetical one he dreams of constructing on the rubble of the existing one he so despises.
Obama fully buys into the Narrative- America the Evil. Oppressive, racist, colonialist, imperialist, exploitative, all of the above, and sins above all in resisting the honorable Liberation Movements among People of Color- Obama's *heroes* are Castro, Chavez, Ho Chi Minh, Mao (whom he is honoring today) his cousin Odinga and all the rest of the sorry lot. Meanwhile he seriously loathes Great Britain (the ultimate White Oppressor), and pettily displays his scorn with all the 'subtlety' of his childish cheek-scratch-flipoffs.
So the America Obama loves, his "new, improved" America, will be one which abjectly confesses its manifold crimes against humanity and penitentially makes eternal reparations to its victims (Third World poverty, of course, being something we created)- and simultaneously makes further amends by advancing the Revolution. Viva la victoria siempre!
it's too bad people like Obama and Maher will never have to live in a country where they have to accept Iranian exceptionalism OR ELSE. maybe that would finally make them see how exceptional this country is.
Maher, Olbermann and Maddow = O'Rielly, Hannity and Beck
If you listen to any of these… "your a nut job"… now you know… and depending on which one you listen too will tell you if your a "LEFT wing nut job" ot a "RIGHT wing nut job"….
Are they wee people or midgets now?
I did not to my knowledge use the term Fascist. I used the term Progressive and you did pick up the fact that I believe Progressives are really a form Anarchist in disguise today. Progressives want to mold the pieces after the Anarchists do the heavy lifting. By definition Progressives will be all over the map of a continuum depending upon what suits them for any given time.
Now tomorrow I may call them Fascist. Today they are Anarchist they tried to get riots started at and around town hall meetings. So far conservatives did not take the bait. Why because conservatives still believe in rule of law as a main principle. But be sure Progressives will try too force anyone attacking them to play Wack-a-Mole. So we will have to learn how to play Rope-A-Dope
Bill Maher is vile & disgusting. I do feel sorry for him, though. One day he will be in front of God who he thinks doesn't exist, and be judged. I believe this is the best country in the whole world & will continue to be as long as God continues to bless us & the liberals don't destroy the good in this country. God Bless You & God Bless America!
Have ya ever heard the expression
"It's not bragging if it is true"
Well Said
add Hugo Chavez to that list
You mean they are not the same person?
I have a very close friend that loves Bill Maher and well he is a leftist. Was not always this way but I Guess College and the lady he married may have had something to do with it. I also observed, that he has a great job, a great pair of kids and a loving wife, and he is not happy or even thankful for anything. I on the other hand, never married, so I don't have any children. I work in the private sector, that is hard hit at the moment, he works for the State and hates the private sector, but not the taxes it pays( Thinks we are not paying enough in Taxs) its a sad an joyless existance he lives, while I take great joy in the little tings like a sun rise or a morning rainbow and that our best days are before us. And this from a fellow that has been on the street's for a little over a year. So for him he needs a Bill Maher, just to validate his own being. Heck of a way to go thru life.
Incredible piece Bill, and filled with facts that will cause witless leftist to run down the streets slapping themselves in the head screaming, “quit it, quit it.” The USA is the greatest country that the world has ever produced without exception, and as with your brilliant piece is the direction of attack to get the parasite leftist back on campus and leave progress to the ones that understand the concept, Conservatives.
Yes,
Thank you so much for posting this here Bill. I saw this on PJTV and posted a link on the Taking Woodstock review because it was so good and so much fun to watch.
For me the most important point you make is about American Anti-Imperialism. We are the only country in history to lose money when we conquer someone. It never occured to me the raw strength and power we had directly after WWII. You are right at that point we could have literally been the first nation ever to conquer the entire globe and no one could of stopped us. Instead we dismantle the military that allowed us to do it.
This video is great, great Great! Better even it is EXCEPTIONAL IN THE AMERICAN VEIN.
Thank you!
I love this country. I tear up when I hear "The Star Spangled Banner." I read the Founder's thoughts and I think, wow, how could they have known what was needed way back then. I have nothing but admiration and awe at how this country, warts and all, built a society that exceeds anything on this planet. And I weep when I realize that Obama and his minions are destroying this magnificent country (along with some RINOs).
Fight back, folks. Fight with all that's been born and bred in you. We are AMERICANS.
What would an even more outlandish Maddow look like? Would she become even more dudely?
I beg to differ. In Pubs and Bars all over the world you'll here many discussions and drunken tirades by Irish and Non-Irish alike about the abilities of the Irish to hold their liquor.
Hes so over like polyester.
So is Obama.
And the people who support him.
Proudly.
(Now let's see if this censoring site can handle THAT truth.)
Sometimes I wonder if there are no real liberal posters, just a machine with about 20 pre-programmed responses that seeks out various venues in which to voice them.
This whole 'American arrogance' thing is one of its dumber talking points. What is American arrogance? How do you quantify it? Because by every possible measure Americans are loved all over the world. We routinely top the lists of 'most desirable tourists' and 'most polite visitors'. People consume our media by the truckloads (except when lefties make it and it's about how much we hate ourselves). They mimic our behavior, they mimic our system of government, they mimic our accents and slang to sound cool. But most importantly, people leave various other countries in droves to come here.
The 'American arrogance' issue is an invention of the New Left in America, people who live here but think themselves so smart that only they can see our moral and ethical bankruptcy and only they have a great plan (if you dig you'll find that 'great plan' is hilariously always some form of Socialism). It's the rabid complaints of a bunch of self-hating whiners who never did anything great, and thus can't accept that America is great without their contribution.
The most firm refutation of the 'American arrogance' canard is the fact that people respect confidence. Look at how the world is playing out with our apologist-in-chief and then try to sell this line of claptrap about 'defusing the perception of American arrogance'. The only people who 'hate American arrogance' are tyrants like Ahmadinejad and Lil Kim, whom you will never impress by apologizing.
Madcow used to be a man I think….I mean….look at this….

WTF is that?!?!?! Transgendered people should hunt it down and kill it (not really) for making them look so bad.
I can't tell where Garafalo's peni$ ends and Maher's face vag!na begins
It is pretty sad, but Maher's statements aren't shocking to me anymore. I can understand now, because he just doesn't get the idea, the concept that is America. He just doesn't get individual liberty, self determination and to those ends the need for limited government. It is just that simple. So he doesn't get what was truly revolutionary about the Declaration of Independence and foundation of our Republic. Or maybe he does get it….but can't acknowledge it, because that would interfere with his belief in statism. But what is most sad, really sad, is, as Mr Whittle notes, the President is of the same damned mindset. Either doesn't get it, or will not acknowledge it.
I canceled HBO because of him and I am no prude. His show is pathetic not because he is an idiot in fact, he can be quick and funny . THe show is just so incredibly agenda driven that it cannot be supported by my money. It is too bad because I like much of the programing.
Thank you. well said.
As has been pointed out in several posts above, living in a foreign country is a real eye-opener and perhaps a more profound lesson in American Civics than any graduate program in the same subject could ever be. Visiting such countries and observing them from the luxury of an Intercontinental Hotel or Marriott is not the same as trying to meet your daily needs over a period of years in the same locale. At each irrational situation in a post-communist or post-socialist country, one develops an increased appreciation for the efficiency of free market accountability and its ruthless attention to what consumers really want.
Finally, Mr. Whittle made a video based on his spectacular Big Hollywood article, The Workshops of Identity.
Thank you so much Mr. Whittle.
A+ Michael! These pseudo intellectual, American-hating whiners, appeasers, and apologists need to hear this on a daily basis. Maybe it'll penetrate their thick skulls someday.
Regarding Obama: I can figure out the meaning of what he said for myself, and I don't need their "progressive" analysis and spin.
America may not be perfect, but we're still the best.
Which countries and allies are you talking about here, Derek? Are they the ones whose butts we saved? Or are they the ones whose butts we kicked?
And, just so you know, I can figure out the meaning of what Obama says without any input from anyone else, and this man is an embarrassement and a threat to America, to our freedom, and to our way of life.
Has anyone evr noticed how these liberals can never succeed at anything other than shooting off their mouths? Any of them own a business? Any been in the service? Any working for local/state/federal government, other than a congressional seat? When was the last time these people ever got their hands dirty doing a hard days work?
They go ga-ga over Kennedy's death and the only things he ever did was win his brothers seat and kill some poor girl on a Mass. road. Never heard anything about Jack Kemp when he died. Kemp as an all pro quaterback, raised a son that was a decent quarterback, fine senator, great secretary-level officer in the government, and mopped the floor with Al Gore in debates when he ran with Dole in 1996.
This is the way the liberals operate. They claim they know everything and know whats best for you. They think their Ivy league education makes up for real would experience and common sense. They can be no farther from the truth or reality.
I agree that Maher knows what he's doing but I believe that this anti-God harpy stuff's gonna get him canned. It's boring, and he is sincerely obsessed with it. He reminds me of Lenny Bruce after Lenny's arrests. There Lenny stood, up there on stage, meticulously reading word for word his court documents forever and ever. People yawned and mingled and ultimately just stopped coming to his shows. Maher, like Bruce, isn't a real comedian anyway. Maher has no real talent to make people laugh. He's too smirky and arrogant to make people laugh. Humility makes people laugh. That's why Pryor was successful and so loved. He was a humble fella who'd been through hell and he trusted us enough to allow us to come in. Maher is souless, cruel and stupid. Everybody's seeing through it and it's going to end up sending him back to the sawdust and vomit crowd. Maybe Heffner or Flynt will take him in. That's where he belongs.
When I read these comments I am always amazed at the outrage against Obama and his cliche. You knew who and what this guy has always been – and you folks voted him in. You hated President Bush who was the best leader this country has had since Abraham Lincoln. This president has never governed never do anything except run for elected office and hates America and everything America stands for. He is is the same chicago style politician you voted for so now suck it up as you see him chipping away at everything that makes America great and unique.
I first heard of Obamism (by a different name of course) while attending Pepperdine's old South Central Los Angeles campus in 1970.
A radical black student (they later went on strike and lit the auditorium on fire) posited to the Western Civ teacher that the US had to be torn down first before it could be rebuilt into a proper structure. Straight Marxism.
Thirty-nine years later it's actually here–in the highest offices of the land.
I just hope the next time Maher masturbates into his gun that it's loaded and the safety is off.
True story: in the mid 90's bill maher came to my alma mater, The Ohio State University, and did a show. A year or so later my roomate saw him on tv and told me the following; he was in a class with the USG [ undergratuate student gov't.] rep that was responsible for hosting maher- essentially being his do-boy for the evening. The guy who was the "host" had told my good friend that Maher was such an a**hole that night, complaining they didn't have diet coke for his mixed drink and it did not have enough ice in it and or they did not make it properly, etc. (this was all at a college house party maher demanded to be taken to, so he could try to get some college A**) that the host and his buddies throwing the party got so mad at the prick maher they pissed in his drink- twice! apparently, he liked the ones with the piss better than the ones that didn't have enough ice! True story. Think what kind of an a**hole do you have to be to get college kids, to detest you, a comic celeb, in that short of time? true story.
AMERICAN EXCEPTIONALISM IS REAL AND WITHOUT IT THE WORLD WOULD BE A MUCH DARKER PLACE! THE FACT THAT OUR DEAR LEADER CONFUSED IT WITH PATRIOTISM, IS DISTURBING , BUT ALSO PAR FOR THE COURSE WITH THIS GUY….. IT'S A SUBJECT HE IS FORIEGN TO. WHILE ALL COUNTRIES HAVE CITIZENS AND WE ARE ALL HUMAN BEINGS, NOT ALL COUNTRIES ARE MADE THE SAME!!!! IT'S A SHAME THAT OUR LEADER [ NEVER REALLY BEEN SO DEAR! ] DOESN'T GET THAT OUR'S IS THE BEST THAT HAS EVER BEEN… CLEARLY, WITHOUT DEBATE OR CONTEST, IT IS THE GREATEST NATION THAT MAN HAS EVER KNOWN, HE HAS BENEFITTED FROM THAT FACT– MAYBE MORE THAN ANYONE ELSE EVER HAS!!! AND HE CAN'T EVEN BRING HIMSELF TO ADMIT IT, LET ALONE PROCLAIM IT THE WAY OUR PRESIDENTS SHOULD. WHAT A DISGRACE.
every time his name comes up I remember him guesting on Murder She Wrote. That has got to smart when the "kewl" meter drops off the scale. I loved MSW but being one of Angies "charity projects' is so out there. LoL
Hey!!! a little warning would be nice for something that bad… yuck!!!!

Individual components of a hive mind.
Might explain why all the trolls seem to be using the same script.

"did the US not use the atomic bomb? have they forgotten Nagasaki & Hiroshima? what about napalm in Vietnam? Gitmo? Iraq? are they done dismantling their nuclear arsenal? "
Yes we used A bombs and in the process saved 12 million lives. Explain why Japan did not surrender after the first one was dropped. As to the rest I'll take NApalm over the Killing fields and gitmo to a leninist or nazi concentration camp.
"how much of US wealth is derived from sweat shops?"
None sweat shops are illegal in the US. If you don't like slave labor please direct your ire at the goivernment of China. We Americans don't have any control over them.

"how much carbon does this economy generate? "
Not relevant as carbon is not dangerous- and the CO2 causing global warming is not proven. Please provide one other study than the Antartic Ice Cores. If there are no experiments or corraborating evidence then their cannot be consensus.
"what's the average SAT score of the American college hopeful? how many of the 30m citations are negative? " ya da ya da
If a country is producing more then one assumes the average of positive and negative to be the same unless there is evidence to the contrary. It is silly to assume that America produces 10 time more citations than the next country but somehow 90% are negative. Asking leading and insulting questions does not provide proof nor does it make one's debate an intellectual one.
And by the way one does not have to be perfect to be exceptional or to celebrate- just the best.
