The Cult of Iconography
by Bill WhittleYou know, the one thing that I learned from this last election is that if you have a young, hip, likable, historic candidate, and you promote him through CBS, ABC, NBC, CNN, MSNBC and all the rest, not to mention stand-up and late night comedy, the entire music industry, university, high school and even elementary school teachers, just about every major movie and television star… and run against the oldest candidate in the history of the Republic, despised by the base of his own party, a man unwilling to take the fight to the only fields in which he can win, and representing the incumbent party responsible for two unpopular wars, a two-term President with historic disapproval ratings, in the middle of the “worst economy since the Depression…”
…Well, you put all of those forces in harness and you, sir, will attain 53% of the vote!
Just think about that for a second. Think about how many things have to go perfectly for Liberals to eke out a bare majority.
This leads me to think that their entire edifice doesn’t need a whole lot of demolition to swing the tide. One or two planks ought to do nicely and then the rest of it will collapse under its own weight.
One of those planks is marketing and packaging. The Obama example is a case of horrible content beautifully packaged. Conservatism, on the other hand, is a beautiful message horribly packaged, and if we ever hope to win again we’d better get in this game and right quick.
If you can spare eight minutes, you might this look into how the Democrats use the power of marketing and especially iconography to great effect.
BIG HOLLYWOOD is read by Conservatives who know how to do this. So much is made of high-level celebrities coming out in favor of the Conservative message, and God knows that helps. But I think it is much more important for those of you who can write, direct, design and edit to get in this game.
The events of the last few years have shown me that if the Democrats ran unopposed, they would lose. The ultimate question will be whether or not the GOP leadership needs another two years of pain, or four, or eight, to fully get what the Dems have understood for a generation: packaging counts.
I hope it wakes you up. More than that, I hope it motivates you to bring your skills to the table and join the Resistance.

You forgot Obama outspending McCain by between 4:1 and 10:1 throughout the election. To at least some degree, Obama also bought his seat. Just because this doesn't fit the left-wing narrative and they don't mention it much doesn't mean that we shouldn't.
Uh, Bill, not to nitpick, but rabbits are not rodents. They're lagomorphs. (about 1:30 into your video) Not getting such basic science correct doesn't do our message any favors, either…
I found the LOL stickers on line just google Obama LOL!
I'm ordering a dozen!
PS. This is one of the best commentaries I have ever seen.
Obama also ran for President for 2 years straight. That had something to do with it as well.
Thank you for saying this. As a military mom McCain was a fine choice, but honestly, he is my dad's age, and I worry about him driving! Palin, who is my exact age was not ready for the spot light. She should have been in front of the cameras long before she was announced to see how she handles it. Needless to say, McCain would have made a better choice. This party desperately needs a candidate who is a peer to Obama. Age is not our friend any more here. The 25-45 year old lefties are having families, fighting this terrible job market, paying taxes, this is when they are most likely to see the light and make the jump, but those on the fence are going for the celebrity (it is America after all), so we need to find our own, young, articulate, conservative celebrity. Newt would be a terrible choice. We need a Conservative who does their job well and isn't a mouth piece for the news. Sorry, but this has to be a well thought out plan. It is obvious the best man doesn't win. It is all in packaging.
Ok, with the exception of the aforementioned taxonomic error, that was brilliant.
Great job, Bill.
Also, Fairy made a portrait of Bush with blood-dripping fangs before the Obama-Hope poster.
Your first article on Big Hollywood, The Workshops of Identity, is STILL the greatest article I've ever read on the Internet. I've sent it to at least 50 people by now.
What are YOUR favorite History books, especially about American history? Where can I go on the Internet to learn about REAL American and world history?
And would YOU ever consider writing a book on American history?
Thanks a million.
Joe Weldon.
And when I mean 'REAL American history', I mean American history without any postmodern leftist revisionism.
Thanks.
Joe Weldon.
A great place to start would be "The Five Thousand Year Leap" by W Cleon Skousen. I thought I knew my American history until I read this. Should be a text in all high schools.
While virtually ignoring his duties as a US Senator.
Excellent post and video! You also show that packaging without substance is a sure loser and you need look no further than President Obama.
Too bad you weren't Joss Whedon.
(sigh)
You say potato.
Just ordered it from Amazon. Thanks.
BILL!
How about you make an extended Afterburner video BASED on The Workshops of Identity?
Now THAT would be a powerhouse.
Those wishing to read a wonderful history of the Revolution I recommend The Glorious Cause by Robert Middlekauff. Made me fall in love all over again with my, our, country.
He still found the time to vote "Present" for many issues, and voted "Full Steam Ahead" for late term abortion. His term as senator wasn't a complete dereliction of duty.
That first paragraph got me too. I loved it!!!
That is the very definition of nitpicking, my friend. Give me a hundred thousand people and ask them if a rabbit is a rodent or a lagamorph, and you'll starve to death before you find one.
And thus you define why the conservatives are out in the cold while Barack hands out millions to his cronies. We haven't figured out how to sell the best political product in the world because people like you want to argue about lagamorphs. Sigh.
You can order Bill's book "Silent America: Essays on a Democracy at War" on Amazon. Here's the link:
http://www.amazon.com/Silent-America-Essays-Democ...
Holy cow, the man can write. He also looks good on camera and has a very pleasing voice. So, we can all agree that's just not fair.
Well we can't afford it but I just subscribed to PJTV. I feel like I'm sending money to Atlantis, out of Atlas Shrugged. How much fun is it, working at a place like that?
I guess it's a matter of glass half-empty or half-full, but I always thought the Obama logo looked like a sunset, not a sunrise…turns out I was right.
You are absolutely correct although message is important, but must still be articulated clearly. Television transformed presidential politics. People who listened to Kennedy vs. Nixon on radio overwhelmingly felt Nixon won easily. Television elected Kennedy because Nixon looked small, sweating, and horrible with his pancake makeup melting into his five o'clock shadow.
"One thing I want to know is how to insure we don't let the m.s.m. select our candidate."
Easy, closed primaries.
"“close Republican primaries today!”
Amen and Amen!
I already have the 2nd edition from this website.
Spectacular.
"despised by the base of his own party"
I am going to say this one more time for its own post: Close Republican Primaries! That is the only way to get a candidate conservatives will want to vote for, and the Dems can't mess with the outcome as easily.
well, I'm thinking more about the specifics of getting state Republican parties to get them closed where they are not. There may even be some state laws involved, I don't know. My concern is, I haven't heard word one about this subject out of the R.N.C. and I find that troubling.
I agree 100% Bill. We, as conservatives, have got to get the lead out. During the election, Sean Hannity sounded like a broken record – even I got tired of him – talking about "socialism". Some of the other blogs I read don't even try to deny it any more. They DID AND DO want socialism – every bit of it, and NOW. They'll tell you how great it is in Britain, or how great it is in France, or how in Holland they don't pay for anything, healthcare wise. Isn't Holland where they have legalized pot and prostitution? I'm asking, cause I've never been there and don't intend to go. Furthermore, isn't Holland about twice the size of Jersey, ONE of our 50 states? We are headed over the abyss. It may even now be too late.
Unfortunately, the lefty loons are awake as well. They see him slipping in the polls and the "mobsters" and "crazy old misinformed white people" making a difference, and see their hard fought dream slipping away. They plan to march on Washington during September. I'm not sure of the date. Anybody know?
Question…
When does iconography croos over into pagan idolatry?
Answer:
Whenever the Left runs a candidate. The only problem with that is when you cross the line. it's one thing to portray the French looking John Kerry as a certifiable war hero (don't get us started on that) and yet another
to posit this Cook County corrupt thug left wing dilletant as the Saviour of Mankind…
This one is going to bite them in the butt.

But when does LOL mean Laugh Out Loud and when does it mean Lots Of Love. I have seen both used in texts.
I would hate for people to think I was a Lots Of Love person for Obama.
September 12th is the protest in Washington, …be there or be square. The left is the ultimate paper tiger, they have big mouths, but in reality there supporters are a mile wide and a sixteenth inch thick. Expose them to light and real scrutiny and they will scurry and hide.
Bill,
That first paragraph is likely the best examination of how 2008 went down.
So, what's a squirrel?
let's celebrate our ignorance, shall we? that's the spirit! "we're stoopid and proud of it!" untie your undies, Bonnie. because some us don't happen to revel in our nation's lack of scientific knowledge (you know, maybe AGW would have a tougher time getting traction if so many weren't such ignoramuses) don't make us the scapegoat for the right's political failings. geez, i pointed out one minor detail and you blow it completely out of proportion.
btw- i don't lose any sleep over the fine points of zoological classifications, but unfortunately for the present and future of this country, those same 100,000 people are just as ignorant, if not more so, regarding basic economics, science, law/constitution, etc., etc., etc.
they're still rodents. basically rats with furry tails.
As I've been saying for years, the ideology of the Left is so flawed and so bankrupt on so many levels, that even after the Right spots them virtually all of the education system, virtually all of the major news media, overwhelming percentages of unions, government employees, minorities, gays, immigrants, etc., they barely manage to fight us to a DRAW in most elections.
If they ever lose any of these pillars of support on a long term basis, they're toast. They know it and that's why they fight so hard and so dirty to keep their voters from straying off the reservation/plantation.
I am ordering some of the LOL stickers and intend to place them on the top of my oJoker posters!
Maybe the ambiguity will protect your car from vandalism by the tolerant leftists.
another thing Sean Hannity said that should be a definte hard lesson learned:
"Elections have consequences"
Let us not forget that one come 2010.
As Leno said, "If God had wanted us to vote, he would have given us candidates". Packaging might be necessary for the next conservative candidate in 2012, but I personally have had my fill of *packaging* with the current POTUS. I look for someone to lead with principle, morals, and conservative ethics. No more empty suits, please!
My dear mrm-in-wnc, you know about lagamorphs but you know nothing about marketing, which is the subject of this entire comment thread. You don't market a lagamorph, you market a bunny. If you are dissecting one, or studying one, then lagamorph all you want. Otherwise, if you want to sell a product, you'd better be able to brand your product in a reasonable way.
As a side note I love how the internet allows petty, insignificant people the chance to attack and try to disparage others. They end up looking foolish, and silly, and reveal nothing but the hatred with which they regard themselves. Just like poor, sad little mrm-in-wrc here.
I salute you!
There are plenty of Conservative artists out there trying very hard to make the changes you are asking for. Unfortunately, we have no support from the Conservative community. No offense, but even you guys here at BH complain day in and day out, but provide very little support to Conservative artists. When you do, you use us as a stepping stone to what is wrong with the Liberal art community. Please stop complaining, and do something to support the promotion of Liberty and Conservative philosophy through the arts. Our culture depends upon it. Our future depends upon it.
The following is a letter that I send out repeatedly, in my efforts to garner support for the Conservative artists, including myself, who are dedicating their time and talents to this crucial effort. We are only a few, of the many, who would be openly patriotic and Conservative, if we didn't have to fear blacklisting of our work by galleries, agents, etc.
Much has been debated recently about the state of art in America, and who has freedom of political expression in the art community. Most of it is drivel. Please allow me to introduce myself, and my proposal to make true changes in the art community.
I am a Libertarian/Objectivist. I support Limited government and individual Liberty, the Constitution and the rule of law. I am using my talents as an artist to spread the word for Liberty and call out the Liberal establishment in Hollywood, Washington and the art community. There are many more artists like me out there. However, we cannot succeed without support from the Conservative community and patronage of our work. Please don't brush this off as a solicitation. I am a business person just like you, I just happen to create art. I am not asking for a favor or money unearned. I am asking for the opportunity to change the culture of America and give Conservatives a venue for their art and opinions. I am creating a movement from the ground up while trying to produce and market my work, as well as gain support for my efforts. I am attempting to help as many of my fellow Conservative artists who are willing to join the movement. (Here is a fine example of one of the artists I am working with:
http://picasaweb.google.com/timeless.sculptures/T...
I am happy to discuss terms of commission or donate work to a fund raising event of your choice in exchange for the publicity I need to interest patrons in my work. I would love to organize an art show with Conservative artists, offering a percentage of sales to your organization. We simply need a venue. And finally, I would like to start a patriotic mural project to spread the message of Liberty.
We must challenge the Liberal stranglehold on American culture before it is too late. Will you consider helping me make this stand? Please look at my work and get back to me.http://www.machinepolitick.com/ Art That's Not Liberal, and http://www.modernconservative.com/liberatchik.php Home of the Declarationist Art Movement.
Thank you for your time and Consideration. I look forward to your response, even if you are not interested in helping. Have a good day.
Sincerely,
Frances Byrd
Just a complete dereliction of decency.
Good point. I'll order some!
at the grave risk of pulling the string in the middle of your back one more time…
Please note: At no time did I engage in any ad hominem attacks against you, whatsoever. however, for some reason you feel the need to feebly bolster your indefensible position by doing exactly the sort of thing the left is famous for- substituting insults and assertions for well-reasoned arguments. if anyone's behavior is a classic example of the sort of c r @ p the Right doesn't need, it's yours.
you thinly disguise your arrogance and condescension with the faux-familiar usage of "My dear" and "my friend", then ignorantly (not to mention, irrelevantly) assert that I "know nothing about marketing", then move on to name-calling with "petty", "insignificant", "foolish", "silly", "poor, sad, little…" and my favorite bit of amateur pop psychoanalysis- "reveal nothing but the hatred with which they regard themselves"!
are you even remotely familiar with the concept of "projection"? or are you really 'cognitive dissonant' masquerading in right-wing, holier-than-thou drag today?
to repeat, i corrected one minor factual error, that i found distracting in an otherwise wonderful presentation. i most certainly DO NOT "want to argue about lagamorphs", but evidently YOU DO. (but if you're going to continue this trivially tangential tirade, would you at least learn how to spell lagOmorph?)
the ball's in your court, Bonnie. how will you embarrass yourself next in the process of attacking me? my casual disinclination to use proper capitalization as a clear sign of my deep-seated longing to engage in sexual congress with invertebrates?
bottom line, Bonnie, if you're too thin-skinned to withstand a little challenge without getting nasty and personal, then you need to find another outlet for your venom. (alternately, a little creative, humorous sarcasm would be a huge improvement over your dull, uninspired salvos.) i don't speak for anyone but myself here, but i think you're crossing a line. BH is a wonderful place that tolerates a LOT out of its posters and doesn't need people who angrily, defensively, and personally, lash out at every little perceived slight.
Bill – your first paragraph alone is worth the price of admission. You perfectly sum up how vulnerable Obama is in particular, and Democrats more generally. Right now, the Republican Party does not seem to have the right icon. The way Sarah Palin ignited crowds was electric, yet, even I admit she had some "gravitas" issues not entirely ginned up by the left.
We can win this, and while I don't want to peak too early, now is the time to start identifying who will step up. Newt seems to be an early contender, but there may be other even better candidates. One thing I want to know is how to insure we don't let the m.s.m. select our candidate.
Oh, please. You sound like my 17-year-old son, who takes everything so literally that "empty the dishwasher" means he takes everything out of the dishwasher and puts it on the counter.
Are you 17, too?
Bill, this was another excellent piece. It's a shame that we can't get you onto a bigger national stage – your discussion of the dangerous, cultish use of the ObamaIcon should get more airtime.
Bill ~ Fantastic article and, as usual, enlightening commentary on PJTV.
Please know that I mean this as the utmost compliment: I can show your PJTV commentaries to my 11-year-old daughter and the way you explain things, she "gets it". You are straightforward and use excellent examples to support your (and my) POV.
I no longer refer to myself as Republican … I am a Conservative. Period.
Style over substance, an empty suit and other cliches abound. The "other" 47% knew this guy couldn't govern all 57 states. LOL! indeed.
The object is to brand individualism and the power of the individual–the core of the conservative philosophy.
If, in the name of competing with the Dems, the Repubs become the fractured party of special interests like the Democrats are now then all the branding in the world won't help Repubs be less electable…
Well duh… McCain lost the second the press chose him, by the way Michael Steele “close Republican primaries today!” Labeling is fine but core belief is important as well. An unabashed America loving conservative could have beaten Barry with all of his faux pomp and circumstance… ala… another old candidate Ronald Reagan. Conservatism is a easy sell, but most Washington politicians (John McCain) really don’t believe in Conservatism which by extension means real freedom, and diminished Washington power. There is good news about our Barry, the country is wide awake now, and paying close attention to our sleazy Washington Jackals, there’s gonna be hell to pay in 2010! Love the video and essay, Bill.
Great commentary here, as usual. Thank you Mr. Whittle.
Anyone else here given consideration to Tim Pawlenty (Gov. of MN) as a possible 2012 candidate? I definitely like his calm, collected style…and he's certainly proven he knows how to deal with all of these irrational idiots on the far left, while effectively running a government. Not to mention the fact he's successfully "balanced", on at least 3 separate occasions, a state deficit without raising taxes, etc. Thoughts?
Beautiful!
Getting my LOL stickers! will place them around town here in Ottawa, Canada.
Already have the Joker/Obama poster framed in my bar. Quite the conversation piece!
I agree 100% Bill. We, as conservatives, have got to get the lead out. During the election, Sean Hannity sounded like a broken record – even I got tired of him – talking about "socialism". I stupidly thought he was being an alarmist to a point. Some of the other left-leaning blogs I read now, just to keep up with the loons and their mindset, don't even try to deny it any more. They DID AND DO want socialism – every bit of it, and NOW. We need a major package overhaul and a hero, and fast.

This is convenient for the right still salving its wounds in the political wilderness. What this fails to mention is the inroads made by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, with Rahm at the helm, in the 2006 mid-terms. He made right-leaning voters in VA, NC, IN, KY, and other traditionally red states understand that the conservative message simply did not jibe with the reality of their situations, particularly from an economic standpoint. (Remember "What's the Matter with Kansas?") There is a real disconnect between conservative economic policy (and its results) with the core of the base. 2006 let red state voters know that the Democrats still want their vote, rather than the perception of elitism, even scorn, heaped on them in the past.
Add to that a seemingly endless stream of contradictory actions by Republican politicians in the eyes of "values" voters and you get a problem that simply cannot be glossed over by the wishful thinking that 2008's results were a mere hiccup brought on by idolatry. Hillary would've walloped McCain as well. I believe that many Democrats thought that Bush's election in 2000 was a farce and that it was predicated by his aw-shucks populism and good-ol'-boy persona. A kind of redneck idolatry: "Hey man, he's one of us! I'd like to have a beer with him!" How did 2002 and 2004 turn-out? No, conservatives have to recraft an image and a message. Know that, or 2010 will be as unkind as 2002 was for the left.
A lot of those Democrats recruited to run in 2006 and 2008 have voted to the left of Charles Rangel and Barney Frank.. The conservative voters in VA, NC, IN & KY have caught on to this now that the media can't mislead them as to which party runs Congress.
As for eliist scorn, Madam Deficit defines the term.
Bill: thank you. I've been thinking about this in the abstract for quite awhile. I've posted here and elsewhere that in the "PR" department, the GOP doesn't seem to know what to do. I'm not saying the Dems are light years ahead…their PR is better but still pretty lame (OTOH, how good can PR be for politicians anyway?).
Maybe it's a strategy, but look what's going on now; where would this whole health care debate be without the vocal town hall folks, or without talk radio hosts? Not to mention conservative pundits who seem to think that it's better to bash other GOP'ers rather than thump some rhetorical heads on the left (what's up with that, anyway?)
The GOP seems stuck using the same lame approach and afraid to stick their collective neck out…except with YouTube videos. Otherwise, where's the GOP PR push? As usual, it's there, but no one seems to notice.
Conservatism, liberty, limited government and freedom are relatively new in the scope of human government…and it's a true progressive movement. What Democrats advocate is more of the "top down" approach that's been going on for centuries. I know it's not news to you all…just sayin'.
"Help me Big Hollywood…you're my only hope"
O Proteus…..all those words and you never once mention the President is BLACK?
Didn't see this comin' did you?
" a man unwilling to take the fight to the only fields in which he can win"
I guess this is the part where I could show you an email I have from a major NRO blogger where he whines that Team McCain told them to stay away from race and Rev. Wright because the GOP IS F*CKING RACEWHIPPED!
hahahaha
For the past 20 years the GOP has been gradually being culturally disenfranchised….and then..because of George Gog/Magog Bush, the Torture/Econopalypse president, you get brutally and instantly politically disenfranchised 365 to 173.
You aren't coming back, Proteus. Healthcare reform isn't Obama's waterloo……it is yours.
Kristol said healthcare reform would kill the GOP last December.
Do you know why I'm not a conservative n/e more, Proteus?
Because you guys sukk.
I doubledog dare you to print this.

Reminds me of that beautiful scene in The Cosby Show where Bill was explaining to a really nice guy how Bill's own daughter brought this guy in a very shabby way, and that they would have loved him otherwise, but it was like presenting steak and the accouterments on the underside of a garbage can lid and serving it that way. Whittle is the shiznit. I wish I had an uncle like him.
Amen! I have been screaming my lungs out about that very thing. Close the PRIMARIES!
If you were in high school in the 80's. LOL means "lots of love". If you were texting in high school, LOL means "laugh out loud". My 1987 yearbook is filled with people wishing me "lots of love".
Ahhh…the "audacity" of dereliction…
Great commentary here, as usual. Thank you Mr. Whittle.

I dunno, doesn't make sense to me either –
But I always though I saw a RIVER OF BLOOD in that Obama logo…..
On another note:
"Uh, Bill, not to nitpick, but rabbits are not rodents. They're lagomorphs. (about 1:30 into your video) Not getting such basic science correct doesn't do our message any favors, either…" – mrm-in-wnc
I though this a bit funny, and i thought mrm in wnc might've said it with a wink. Not something to get ya'lls panties in such a wad…………………….
These are all very good points.
However, beyond marketing the Democrats are also very successful at engaging identity politics. I could be wrong, but it seems to me that Democrats are willing to indulge identity politics even so far as to the detriment of the nation, whereas Republicans it seems generally hold the interest of the nation before the interests of specific identity groups. Thus the message from Republicans remains more or less consistent group to group while the message from the Democrats is mixed depending on the audience and the location. A good example is Obama himself actually using different voices and variying his vocabulary and content speech to speech. This is widely acknowledged, but oddly excused by party operatives. Republicans are going to have to learn a little duplicity, if not actual multiplicity. I cannot tell you how many gays have told me they're Democratic because they are gay, ridiculously fallacious reasoning as I've ever encountered, but still emphatic as the very thought of voting Republican is inconceivable because Republicans have failed to pander to them, in fact Republicans state outright in their platform their intention to exclude them from military service, DADT notwithstanding. Same for blacks who view, say, Judge Thomas a traitor for being Republican, apparently unaware of the history of the party they're beholden to because Republicans generally do not support affirmative action. Republicans also alienate Latinos with stricter concern about the border and for controlling illegal immigration while Democrats openly pander to that vaudience, to all those audiences, in fact.
I hear you! There are so many times where I just want conservative artists that have talent poke the left in the eye and give me something to enjoy. Even here I keep saying that Big Hollywood's biggest problem is too much talk and not enough action and support. I would do it myself, but have no money, no influence, and absolutely no ties to Hollyweird.
#1- We need more people like Dennis Miller and gang on Red Eye. Take a page from Saul Alinsky, and have laughs at their expense for a change. Humor is a most powerful weapon…
#2- How you package a message IS important. Reagan was a powerful influence because he always tried to set a question in positive terms. Obama understands this, and too many Republicans reflexively become "grumpy old men," which hurts the cause
#3- Sarah Palin and the women on Fox News Channel have proven to America that women can be intelligent, articulate, positive and hot. Phyllis Schlafly. please retire!
Thank you for your encouragement Jettboy. I have no influence, money, or ties either and that is the problem. Word of mouth and publicity are just as important as money, and that is why I am here stirring up dust. As a fine artist working predominantly in paint, I need representation. However, an art gallery won't and probably can't sell my work to the elites in the art community. Therefore, the burden of carving a new market rests on me. No complaints, but I can't do it alone.
If you like my work, please pass on the link http://www.machineppolitick.com I would greatly appreciate it. Also, feel free to steer any creative Conservatives you know my way. I want to build a movement because there is strength and credibility in numbers, and I can't change America alone.
