How Obama Uses Late Night and How Late Night Loves To Be Used
by Ben Shapiro[T]his is how it works in the world of late night. The last election cycle saw the late night hosts go into overdrive for the Obama election campaign. Between January 1, 2008 and July 31, 2008, the Center for Media and Public Affairs found that Jay Leno, Conan O’Brien, and David Letterman made a grand total of 169 jokes about Obama, compared with 428 about Bush and 328 about McCain. Comedy Central comedians were more even – Colbert made 129 jokes about McCain to 91 for Obama, and Stewart made more jokes about Obama than McCain, although the vast majority of jokes about Obama were fawning compliments and the vast majority about McCain were brutal slams.
Perhaps that was the real purpose of Obama’s routine appearances on late night television as president of the United States, an unprecedented breach of traditional decorum: he wanted to make it routine for all candidates to appear on the shows run by his allies. By appearing himself, Obama essentially dared anyone who opposes him to take the seat opposite the Jon Stewarts and Jimmy Fallons of the world – and, as they have to, Republicans have taken the bait. That’s why we’ve seen Rick Perry reading a top ten list on Letterman about his debate foibles. That’s why Bachmann was on Fallon. That’s why McCain deigned to appear with Stewart, even knowing what was coming.
Dennis Miller was both brave and correct when he bashed Jay Leno for kissing Obama’s royal arse last week. He actually recommended that Leno hire Obama after Obama loses his re-election effort: “I could see you guys doing comedy bits on here where you come out as Carnut the Magnificent and you have the turban on and the mechanic overalls and he reads ‘You are correct, sir!’ off a teleprompter.”
More likely, Obama will end up hiring all of these comedians as his court jesters sometime in the near future. Their ratings are dropping, and their biases are now obvious. And we already know the relationships are good: the Comedy Central writers are Obama’s brain trust of hilarity, writing jokes for his speeches and giving him tips on how to win over an audience.
What happened to Rep. Bachmann is nothing new. It’s just the most obvious crack in the solid wall of propaganda put out by the late night left that it bashes both sides equally. The “Lyin’ Ass Bitch” slam was planned in advance – Questlove tweeted shortly before she appeared, “aight late night walkon song devotees: you love it when we snark: this next one takes the cake. ask around cause i aint tweeting title.”

Where's the Johnny Carson of the 21st Century? Dennis Miller come close.
…..The laughing stops for Obumbler and all lying socialist criminals and clowns on November 6, 2012…..
………….342 days to Victory !……….
……The Restoration of the Constitution begins while Tea Party Patriots enjoy the last -and best – laugh……
An appearance on late night talk fests is just another level of the indignity to which our presidential candidates must stoop in order to conquer. Not only do we require them to be expert pancake flippers, demonstrate proficiency at sketch comedy on SNL, and pretend to enjoy eating food that would make a pig hurl, they also must be experts at bantering with moronic liberal talk show hosts complete with silly band leaders and Top Ten lists. Are all these "talents" really necessary?
Can you just picture Coolidge, Eisenhower, or even FDR reciting "Top Ten Ways I Am Really Stupid?" Is there no serious poise left? Whatever happened to serious problems call for serious people?
Fortunately late night is watched primarily by college students who graduate with record levels of student debt and a dismal Obamaconomy. Reality trupms little late night quips. Polls show he's losing this demographic.
Unfortunately, these same college students have been thoroughly indoctrinated in progressive liberalism, so, as soon as they graduate, they assume they are owed 1) a six-figure a year job and, 2) cancellation of all student loan debt. OWS, anyone? These people DO NOT deal in reality.
This says a lot more about the audience than either the GOP candidate or talk show host, both of whom are simply pandering to the teleboobs. The Jon Stewarts and Jimmy Fallons of the world may or may not be collectivist sycophants, but that doesn't really matter. They do have an audience that responds favorably to collectivist rhetoric, which is the same tired swan song of the Jacobins, Bolsheviks, Marxists, Maoists, etc., and that is far more disturbing to me.
As a Tea Partier, I don't think I'm going to be laughing best with Mitt Romney.
They think the stoned out college kids, who vote at the ballot box and at the stores, want to hear all this, but they dont! Once they sober up, they'll realize that these guys are asses, and wont watch them anymore!
The funny thing is that I noticed the audience applauding enthusiastically when Dennis Miller made his anti-Obama jabs as well. Which made me think: Do these people even know what they are clapping for or are they just following an "Applause" sign? They seemed to laugh and clap equally hard for either righty or lefty humor. Seems like they are not really even paying attention to what is really being said, instead just moronically clapping when there is a pause in the dialogue.
I completely agree, but reality doesn't leave because Letterman made some smart ass comment about Herman Cain. They're eatching these shows in their parents' basements with $60,000 of student debt and an bill from the federal gov't for $100,000 more as their share of the Obamadebt. reality trumps TV. He's losing this demographic because reality is the cold water in the face waking them from their indoctrination slumber.
….I hear ya'….but, regardless of who heads the ticket, the major pick-ups in Congress and at the state level – like in 2010 – will establish a more solid foundation for future Conservative dominance……
Dennis Miller isn't fit to shine Johnny Carson's shoes
B. Hussein O. Jr. wil lose the presidency. Now is not the time to get wish-washy. Conservatives need to go all in.
Romney is articulate and very bright. The USA could do a lot worse. However, he has spent his political career pandering to the Left (guns, global warming, health care). He will probably continue if elected President.
This could splinter Republicans in future elections.
….Who do you recommend we get behind ?….
…..Sarah's not running, Rubio's not, Allen West's not…….
I dunno…I'm kinda starting to pull for Newt.
…..and Rubio for Vice !……..
I used to live a couple blocks away from the Tonight Show studio. You, sir, have nailed it. People that line up for these hack shows are interested in celebrity only. It reveals much about Leno's & Letterman's lack of talent that there are never any substitute hosts. The great Carson always had them fill in, and that was a testament to the confidence he had in his own ability.
The GOP candidates who go on these late night shows do so for no other reason than their oversize egos and as such they deserve what they get and what they get is mostly negative exposure. They gain nothing positive, politically, despite the fact 2 to 3 million people tune in, because the liberal host makes them look stupid and silly.
All you people kissing Johnny Carson's butt do realize that Johnny was David Letterman's mentor. Johnny loved Dave like a son. Johnny taught Dave the rules of the talk show game. Dave attended Johnny's monthly poker game every year until he died. Johnny wrote and faxed jokes to Dave up until the year he died. Johnny did not like leno and it was Warren Littlefield at NBC that chose Leno to take over as host of The Tonight Show because NBC owned the show. Not Johnny. Johnny didn't even get a vote. Dave owns his show on the other hand, Not CBS. Dave cannot be fired by CBS. He is just renting his show to CBS at a cost of $30 million dollars a year.
By the way – Carson was a Liberal: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1327105/...
And he hated the Bushes: http://www.network54.com/Forum/88448/thread/11065...
Al Franken once interviewed a longtime friend and co-worker of Johnny's. Sorry, didn't get the name. The guy said that Johnny was for sure a "Flaming liberal."
Sorry, Cons. I know you're all now heartbroken.
YES!!!!!!!!!!!! Mr. "I sexually assaulted her, man" Cain is OUT. Liechele B*tchmann is next. They're dropping like flies.
IOWA Caucas, January 3rd. Republicans – say hello to your republican nominee Mitt Romney!!!!
Like my conservative friend who HATES President Obama said to me this past weekend: "Oh well, at least we'll have 2016."
Aaron Sorkin couldn't script it better.
Johnny was A LIBERAL!! What do you people not understand about that?
He was a Democrat, not necessarily a liberal.
Are You Kidding?????????????????
And who's going to replace him? Cain is Out. Liechele is next. Those two are now dead in Iowa. Newt after that. Romney's getting the nom. Perry? Is he even still in the race? I haven't heard.
Heard from a guy who works at NEWSCORP which owns and operates Fox News that they secretly want Obama re-elected because should a republican get re-elected the network is going to lose a tonne of money. I mean what's Fox going to report each day? If Mormon Mitt changed his magic Mormon underwear?
Fox news isn't about ideology. They're about $$$$$$$$$.
Think, people. THINK!
So Al Franken overheard a guy talking about another guy who was a co-worker of Johnny's, and that guy waited until Johnny had died before revealing that he was a homosexual?
Sounds a little convoluted, Skippy. But you're missing the entire point of our admiration for Johnny. The man put class above politics. It was a far cry from the Bill Mahers and David Lettermans who sacrifice class for their own political agenda.
It's amazing, isn't it? With all these Republicans dropping out of the race, they'll be down to only one guy on the ticket next year!
Mikeflah,
It is SO obvious why you are here attempting to distract (pushing your straw man buttons), projecting YOUR construction of what you THINK makes up a Conservative… man, you need to be a bit more nuanced! LOL
Do you do this every day… run to Topic to Topic, dropping your bits of superstar "genius" ??? Gawd, you drive me into hysterical fits of laughter!!! Seriously, thank you, you have made my day… just pure brilliance… that you have figured out… that in the end of the process… there will be but one person standing! WOW, just blowing my mind!
… as the winds of awesomeness still waft through the room… you do realize though that you were not the singular entity to have watched Johny Carson?
Although there are no allegations of Herman Cain assaulting anyone (except a 20 year late one by David Axelrod's bankrupt neighbor), it is obvious that he is innocent of any claims of harrasment made against him. We know this because of case history, in which it was established as a fact, in Scumbag President vs. The American Public, that a man is completely innocent of any claim of sexual misbehavior by saying so, up and until you produce a sperm-covered garment.
"Johnny was A LIBERAL!! What do you people not understand about that?"
But the great part was that no one could tell.
So you think your slander and libel campaign is working and are gleeful about it?
Thanks for giving more proof of what a disgusting, hateful little creature you are.
"Heard from a guy who works at NEWSCORP which owns and operates Fox News that they secretly want Obama re-elected because should a republican get re-elected the network is going to lose a tonne of money."
Bullcrap. They did just fine during eight years of Bush. You'll have to come up with better lies than that.
"All you people kissing Johnny Carson's butt do realize that Johnny was David Letterman's mentor. Johnny loved Dave like a son. Johnny taught Dave the rules of the talk show game."
Obi Wan Kenobi was Darth Vader's mentor.
See how tragically wrong these things can go sometimes?
"Sorry, didn't get the name."
Gee, there's a shock.
"Like my conservative friend who HATES President Obama said to me this past weekend: "Oh well, at least we'll have 2016."
You keep dropping an awful lot of quotes that you have no way of backing up.
Some say Carson was a flaming liberal. Others say he was right in the middle politically. What no one says is that he was a conservative or Republican.
So the poor Republicans have to appear on the Late Night Shows because…..Obama made them do it?
Keep up the great writing, Ben.
"Heard from a guy who works at NEWSCORP which owns and operates Fox News that they secretly want Obama re-elected because should a republican get re-elected the network is going to lose a tonne of money"
I think you just broke my BS detector
You can have him. I don't give a rat's ass about the man.
I think you might misunderstand everyone's appreciation for Carson. It never mattered what Carson's political affiliation was. He didn't treat the audience with contempt.
You cannot say the same about Letterman.
I think you might misunderstand everyone's appreciation for Carson. It never mattered what Carson's political affiliation was. He didn't treat the audience with contempt.
The individual you're responding to will never understand that sort of thing. He hates people who disagree with him, so he comes here to spew his venom and presumes that those he hates are just like him. He'll probably take the criticisms he gets in response as "proof" of that.
I suspect in most cases, the people who respond to him are doing so less because of his politics and more due to his being a jackass. Perhaps I'm projecting.
Actually, that's been known for some time. As another person noted, he never let his political views turn himself into a childish, spiteful little man like, well, you.
Which, I guess, should break your heart, since he didn't take efforts to "stick it" to all those icky people you hate. Like you do.
Johnny wasn't a jackass like YOU. Why do you keep failing to comprehend that.
Oh wait, you're a spiteful, hate-filled little jackass so your incomprehension should not be a surprise.
I've been a Gingrich fan for about 3 decades now.
