Reasons to Be Optimistic About Upcoming Reagan Biopic
by Ben ShapiroThe Hollywood Reporter is reporting that major industry figures are planning a Ronald Reagan biopic, which is slated to cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $30 million. The figures involved are Mark Joseph, Ralph Winter, and Jonas McCord. Joseph optioned the wonderful Paul Kengor books The Crusader and God and Ronald Reagan; he’s is a marketing and development exec who worked on Ray, Holes, and The Passion of the Christ. Winter, produced the four X-Men movies, two “Fantastic Four” movies, and the remake of Planet of the Apes. McCord wrote Malice and The Body.

Joseph and Winter clearly lean right politically; Joseph commented, quite rightly:
“Only in Hollywood could you make an insulting, condescending movie about a much-loved historical figure, hire an actor who loathes the man, watch it flop and then somehow conclude that Americans don’t want to see a movie about him. I watched Americans line up and wait for 10 hours for the simple privilege of passing by his closed casket. They love this man.”
I was one of the Americans who lined up to pass by his closed casket. I am an unabashed fan of Ronald Wilson Reagan. And I couldn’t be more excited about this movie.
The movie is supposedly going to cover Reagan’s life from birth to the assassination attempt on him by John Hinckley, Jr., which was a transformative moment in the Reagan presidency. Presumably there will be some coverage of Reagan’s impact on winning the Cold War and creating the largest peacetime economic boom in American history.
This movie is a necessary first step toward conservative re-establishment of itself in this town. For too long, conservatives have run screaming from the fray, ignoring culture altogether and going to war with Hollywood rather than attempting to infiltrate it.
The question, though, is whether this strategy – picking an openly conservative figure and lionizing him in artful fashion – is the best strategy toward integrating what is a open-conservative-rein industry. Conservative movies have made money before (The Passion of the Christ being the most obvious example), but they haven’t opened the industry to more conservatives. If anything, the success of openly conservative movies has made militant liberals in the industry more reactionary, attempting to shut out those kooks who were involved with Passion, for example. And the follow-up from conservative investors in film and television projects has been meek, at best; we still don’t have the backing of enough money to provide true competition to the liberal-dominated Hollywood machine.
In order to wield true power in the industry, therefore, conservatives will have to pursue pure entertainment projects as well as conservative shout-out pieces. That means more Dark Knights and less Passions. Hollywood is a town run by two competing forces: profit motive and leftist political motive. The way to help the first motivation overcome the second is to render the second motivation moot by making creative and entertaining films sans political content. Then, once conservatives have entered the industry – once they’ve joined the social clique that Hollywood is – liberals will be more willing to accept them. The fact is that conservatives do work in the industry, but only if they’ve spent substantial time building ties before making their politics clear. We can either yell at the system from the outside, or we can do something about from the inside.

I favor the stealth approach. Everyone tends to think I'm liberal based on my appearance. However whatever you do it has to be compelling or you will get nowhere.
Ben,
I have missed your commentary.
Good article.
I don't have a good feeling about McCord. I had to google his past work because I'd never heard of him (which doesn't bode well for his talent) and what I saw looks neither well written nor original. What I could make out of the plots, however, is uniformly a rehash of Leftist nihilism (dysfunctional families, doubting priests, etc.). There is nothing in there of humanity or faith, which is disturbing. A writer's work reflects his thoughts, his beliefs; ergo, if his work doesn't reflect humanity or faith, he doesn't have it in him. And if that's the case, than how is he supposed to recognize it in his subject – Reagan? Faith was the bedrock of Reagan and I can't see how a script writer whose past work shows NO signs of understanding that will suddenly transform into one who does. Look – a director and producer can do just so much with a bad script, and McCord has produced so many bad ones in his past that it seems unlikely he will suddenly produce a good one. I've got a bad feeling about him.
Update: I've just accessed Rip's link below – and now I REALLY don't have a good feeling for McCord. Anyone who starts of disliking his subject – "Jonas McCord, who was not a Reagan fan, wrote the script. "I was of the opinion that at best he was a bad actor and at worst a clown," and then describes Reagan's Christian background as 'surreal' is NOT the writer to go to.
Just like anything else coming out of hollyweird, high hopes, low expectations.
I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product! Speaking of finished product, what ever happened to the "Lone Survivior" film? There was supposed to be a film based on the book by Marcus Luttrell. Peter Berg (the same guy who drew a moral equivalency between us and the terrorists at the end of "The Kingdom") was supposed to direct. I was really looking forward to seeing that!
Conservative movies have made money before (The Passion of the Christ being the most obvious example)
I would add that Conservative movies are the blockbusters: 300, Dark Knight, Taken, Iron Man, Gran Torino, etc.
McCord said of Reagan, "I was of the opinion that at best he was a bad actor and at worst a clown." That doesn't bode well in my opinion.
With my long hair, long chin beard and Mongolian looking mustache ends, I get that (appearance misjudgement) alot too. Ironically though, it's only the liberals that make that mistake.
the most conservative man i ever met had a 8" fu man chu mustache and looked like a serial killer
Me also…..long white hair down past my shoulders and a full, pure white beard; ….and like Darkwolf, only the lefites seem to make the misstep of assuming I am a ….yuck, lib…..
Up to the assassination attempt? Now I am disappointed.
The real drama is much further on in his administrations. Margret Thatcher, Pope John Paul II, Lech Welesa, Reykjavík, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall."
It tool a lot of years for me to see through the MSM smog and see what really happened. When I finally did, it was amazing what I learned.
Ronaldus Maximus
Will it be another The Queen or will it be another JFK (aka, one of the worst cases of theatrical left-wing revisionism ever)? I hope for the former, as most of this site (no, trolls and Soros tools do not count) does.
I think the film holds a great opportunity as you have said. When it comes to popular culture–especially in Hollywood–, ducking and running is often the first instinct for conservatives. That has to stop and we have to face the pop culture progs in the same territory. After all, Reagan didn't bring the USSR down on its knees by ducking and hiding.
I stunned my co-workers at IBM. The weird guy with the Grateful Dead posters on his wall was putting up patriotic pictures, political cartoons, and National Geographic maps of Iraq on our floor's bill board starting on 9/12.
Trust, but verify.
funny how that works isn't it? We don't really fit the "mold" as is constantly displayed by the MSM.
LOL considering I have zombie related motivational and gamer type prints all over my cube walls, I get that too.
When it comes to stereotypes, it's the left that swears by them everytime.
I went with a collection of Simpsons paraphenalia…..
But I look like a knuckle-dragging, low-forehead conservative anyway….
Well that's how they define a person isn't it? I mean they are a shallow lot and judge books by their cover.
I'll believe it's not a hit piece when I see it….
Exactly
I can't remember the guys name, he got laid off several years ago. He's walking by while I'm putting up a political cartoon of a wounded bald eagle stitching up a torn American flag. And he was literally speechless.
"Ed……what?"
I explained, there is a time for peace and love, and then there are times to kick some ass. Ass kicking time.
Booyah!
Indeed, I have the knuckledragging thing down too.
About as deep as as a drained bathtub, that's for sure.
I had Bart Simpson up on my wall too. 'I didn't do it, nobody saw me, and you can't pin a thing on me.'
I had one obnoxious management type (in other words incapable of productivity) who used to come around and bug me a couple of times a week, asking what percent of my software project was complete. At first I started messing with his head "46.843% complete." He'd say that's not good enough so I'd reply "are you ordering me to lie?"
But eventually I got tired of that, so I came across a really great Sid Vicious poster with this on it.
"Undermine their pompous authority, reject their moral standards, make anarchy and disorder your trademarks. Cause as much chaos and disruption as possible but don't let them take you ALIVE." — Sid Vicious
I put it on the inside of my door so no one could see it unless the door was closed. And when he'd come in for his little talk, I'd close the door.
He left me alone after that.
I forget who wrote this, but it's on my wall in my office
"There comes a time in every decent man's life when he must roll up his sleeves, hoist the black flag and begin slitting throats"
F*ckin A…..
It helps clear the hallways of liberals….
makes ya wonder.. does AXE make knuckle soap? I know they make ball cleaner..

ok, tis my new motto now!
i'm shaved bald with an evil-twin-goatee and with my cromagnon forehead every one assumes I'm an evil republican racist until they learn about my love of funk, reggae and ska
you can see how the cerebral cortex short circuits and they lose the ability to focus for a few seconds
then then they are just stuck with the evil republican
Classic….
We could be twins…
Except I'm not completely clean shaved, I have the Jason Statham stubble….
when it was on TV the other day, my 5 year old couldn't figure out why I was laughing so hard. Completely over his head *lol*
That is so sick, I love it!
it does take more up keep than I like, and I must admit I don't keep up as thoroughly as I'd like
so stubble is what i have at the moment
I paraphrase the sentiment "Arrrrg"
Well come, thinking is, like, hard.
I'm positive I won't watch it because I have no faith whatsoever in Hollyweird getting it right. Waste of money.
"I could play with these all day."

Ach! Dese kids und der zhombies!
I don't expect it ever to be made but a picture concentrating on Reagan's years as president of SAG and the epic battles he fought to keep that organization from becoming a front for committed Hollywood communists could be both dramatically entertaining and enlightening as to what made Reagan Reagan.
OTOH – Several times when I have had my politics perceived as 'conservative', people with far far far right-wing policies, i.e. hating blacks, J/ews, liking Hitler, assume I am a 'like-minded' person.
What's up with that??
Hey, Rasputin! What do you hear from the Tsarina?
I was involved in a movie project some years ago that required me to accompany a foreign film producer to LA for two weeks worth of meetings with various Hollywood film producers. I will say that every one of those Hollywood producers made me want to go take a shower after meeting them.
EXCEPT Ralph Winter. He came across as a genuinely nice guy.
So the Reagan pic at least has that going for it, although McCord seems a…uh…bad choice of script writer.
I had the same feeling when I read the article posted last night. What a strange way to describe a family. Catholic father, devout Christian mother, Catholic brother?????? Who talks like that? Does he not know that Catholics are Christians? I'm expecting a trash piece blaming Christianity for all of his conservative evils.
It's gonna be personal hit piece……laced with tons of liberal psycho-babble. Evil Christians raised an evil conservative, or some such nonsense.
That's because people who are racists aren't right wing. They're left wing. The left just calls them right-wing in order to distance themselves and to discredit the right.
I refuse to accept it.
Left wing is the supremacy of the state at the expense of the individual. They don't even try to hide. The collective over the individual. That means right means the supremacy of the individual at the expense of the state.
Racists want to use the state's monopoly on the use of force on races they don't approve of. They are more than happy to use governmental power to achieve their end, because can't convince a majority they are correct in the arena of free ideas.
A few weeks ago, Rush was on vacation and Dr. Walter E. Williams was subbing for him. He put it better than I ever could. If every white in the south agreed with segregation, there would have been no need for Jim Crow laws.
Jim Crow laws didn't keep African Americans out. They kept whites from letting them in.
If you own a hotel and you refuse to rent to a segment of your potential customer base, because of something as stupid as racism, you're artificially shrinking your customer base. If your competitor doesn't do that, and has a larger potential customer base, guess who's going to make money, and guess who isn't?
Jim Crow laws prevented the competitors of racists business people from serving a larger customer base. The use of monopoly of government force against those who disagree with you.
Supremacy of the state at the expense of the individual. That's pure left wing.
Wouldn't surprise me in the least if it is.
There is one hell of a great epic to be created of that era. I have no idea who, what medium, or what it should be. But I do know that was such an exciting time for freedom and liberty.
That's the era I matured in. I graduated high school in 1981. Things were happening so fast. But for the most part, I view it as a time when ideas triumphed over ideologies and war.
Reagan asked Gorbachev to tear down that wall. And then the east Germans did it themselves.
Ed, you're just a puppy! Heh, heh. Your right, a GREAT era. I graduated high school in 1968…college with all the nut jobs. When Reagan was elected it was the hope that all that crap was over. We now know that the crazies just crawled back under their rocks and regrouped. Ever notice how much Hollywood likes to make fun of that era? Couldn't stand the success!
BTW…just to pick….Reagan didn't ASK Gorby to tear down the wall…..he DEMANDED it. That had the effect of the E. German's growing a pair and down it came!
Hey Cowboy, still waiting for you to explain how Woody Allen's a pedophile.
I think people need to remember that the producers have the final say on the script not the writer. Yes Jonas McCord made some questionable comments but Mark Josephs, however, did not. I'm sure it will turn out just fine.
You seriously need an explanation for that?
Man, Soros doesn't feed you your brain-food in those trolling sweatshops does he?
McCord almost seemed appalled that Reagan's family was profoundly Christian in background, as if that was the reason Reagan appeared so 'awful' in his mind.
From the sound of his filmography, a Christian upbringing is only surreal to McCord's nihilist mentality.
What Hollywood doesn't get is that there are millions of Americans who would shell out 10 bucks in a hearbeat to watch a movie about a true American hero. Reagan made us feel good about ourselves, optimistic about our country, and hopeful for the fate of liberty in a world gone mad. I would pay good money for two good hours of having that feeling again. I bet I wouldn't be alone.
I've had so-called conservatives screw me in Hollywood as readily as liberals. Is Mel Gibson a conservative and therefore made Passions, or is he just a bit of a maniac who was obsessed with something and made a movie that happened to serve a MASSIVE worldwide audience? I'd vote the latter, as evidenced by his subsequent behavior. The fact is, people in Hollywood make movies they can, not necessarily movies they should. Adam Sandler can get something greenlit by snapping his fingers – that's based on his track record. Conservatives have been largely making documentaries for years now, at first in reaction to Michael Moore, who made documentaries very profitable. The problem with conservatives in this town is as much non-commercial material as anything else, although there are some people like Scott Rudin who will reportedly fire someone for being conservative. Funny thing is, I don't know a single conservative who would fire someone over being liberal. When conseratives can make movies like their conservative predecessors – Frank Capra, Elia Kazan, John Ford, Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne, etc. – then Hollywood will be better off and so will America. For the time being, however, Hollywood will make probably half the money it could be making, because it does not truly serve its entire possible audience.
Whatever that means. Cowboy made the statement, I challenged him on it but he doesn't seem to be able to back it up. Neither do you.
Does the movie have lots and lots of neat-o explosions and scenes where Angelina Jolie screws someone else's husband?
Golly Gee, that would be swell.
Ben, I left my house at 8pm to drive up to the Reagan library to quietly Thank President Reagan for helping me. I walked passed his coffin at 10 am the next morning, I didn't get home until 11:45 am that day. I met so many great Americans who were in that parking lot all night talking as if we all were family seeing the head of a family being laid to rest. It was one of the most wonderful and incredible experience I had.
I made a film that the left in this town made sure it would not see the like of day. The left scream and yell about the blacklist in 1905s but today they have turned the blacklist into an art form. You don't have conservatives making A level films unless they were established in the 70s or 80s. You will never see a black conservative filmmaker make a film for a studio. How many white 20 something conservative filmmakers do you see pumping out films? There are more liberals making films and getting them greenlighted. Conservative feature films are as rare as a cowboy in a rap convention.
In the meantime conservatives do nothing to help each other that have films. They eat each other and nothing moves. Then if the only conservative mega-star like Mel opens his drunken mouth or his private fights with this slut he married is plastered all over hell's creation, the conservatives disown him. IF the leftist fascist are allow to destroy Mel, then every conservative who works in Hollywood and gets paid by the hollywood mob will dive deeper into the darken closet where they will find every other conservative.
Only a conservative like myself, who has never taken a dime from this system can out flank the bad reviews and being called a racist. Who cares what these mad dog fascist think. The whole idea is to raise the capital to make and distribute films that the majority of the public will eat up. That is the only way to stick it to Hollywood. The went after Mel, not because he was drunk on a Malibu road. The day he finished the first draft of the PASSION they went after him. He never fought back until he came back from Mexico two years after the PAssion was in profit. This recent outburst is none of our business because if the slut never released the doctored tapes we wouldn't be talking about his private fight of extortion.
Aside from all that, the left will NOT let any conservative make a A level film that goes against their agenda. That is a fact of life. They give YOU money, they OWN YOUR BUTT.
I have Alopecia and have no hair so I am smooth and shiny with no work needed, plus I'm a largish guy so I usually get as much room as I need. I've had old people cross the street, Asian people think I'm a skin head and people just look at me warily.
Great explanation Ed.
President Reagan deserves only the best people and their best efforts in bringing this film to a public that loved him and misses him, today.
I wish them every success with this endeavor.
And yes….CHANGE the industry from the inside! Turn Alinsky methods on THEM!
Technically Reagan challenged Gorby. If he demanded it, the 82nd Airborne would have done it.
What actually brought down the wall was economics. I think it was either Hungary or Czechoslovakia that finally threw up their hands and said they just couldn't afford to keep the security up. When that happened, people behind the Iron Curtain simply went to those countries to get out.
After that, the other eastern bloc countries said why should we pay for the security when people can just go around us? So they dropped theirs too. Finally reached the point where East Germany simply said 'screw it' and they opened up the check points.
Then the sledge hammers came out.
I agree, any time you see 50 million people achieve freedom in your life time, its not only amazing, its beautiful. I hope some one, some where, some time can do justice to the end of the Cold War.
Many thanks, but the real credit goes to Dr. Williams.
