Given its subjective nature it is difficult to disagree your list of the ten greatest directors of all time. Your reasons to include each were, both, insightful and compelling. Still, I would bet 'dollars-to-doughnuts' that every director you named would have included D.W. Griffith on their own lists. As a filmmaking innovator he reigned supreme - at least until this contemporary era of "visual (CGI) special effects" came into being. Patrons of his films were first to experience such things as the inter-cutting of action sequences; the moving (i.e. "dollying") of a camera to film those action sequences; editing from wide to medium to close-up and, yes, even "insert" shots; night photography; color tinting and so much more. Griffith's scope of influence was, and still is, unprecedented. Singularly, his work gave birth to the idea of 'film as art.' Again, as this topic is quite subjective, it renders mine as mere opinion - but my opinion is well based on nearly four decades of filmmaking experience.
