Wanda Sykes’ Gutless Performance
by Ben ShapiroHollywood’s favorite phrase is “speaking truth to power.” It charts just above “She/he is the love of my life,” “Though we’re not together anymore, we’ll remain good friends,” and “Hey, where did I leave my underwear?”
Hollywood slings around the phrase “speaking truth to power” as if it were cocaine at a Sean Penn movie premiere party. And they particularly love slinging it around at the time of the White House Correspondents Dinner.
A couple years ago, Stephen Colbert of Comedy Central was the beneficiary of the “speaking truth to power” Hollywood press machine. He headlined the 2006 White House Correspondents Dinner, and laid ‘em in the aisles with brilliant lines like, “Over the last five years, you people were so good-over tax cuts, WMD intelligence, the effect of global warming. We Americans didn’t want to know, and you had the courtesy not to try to find out. … And then you write, Oh, they’re just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. First of all, that is a terrible metaphor. This administration is not sinking. This administration is soaring. If anything, they are rearranging the deck chairs on the Hindenburg!”
Yes, when you’re a leftist, spouting leftist Hallmark cards cribbed from Democratic Underground counts as humor.
But at least Colbert said all this to Bush’s face. It took a peculiar kind of guts, but it took guts. It wasn’t truly “speaking truth to power” – after all, Bush wasn’t going to send Colbert to the gulag or force him into re-education camp. But by the watered-down definition of the media, it counted.
Wanda Sykes, by contrast, is the most gutless and feckless performer ever to grace the White House Correspondents Dinner.
Sykes, for those who haven’t seen her stellar work in gems like CondomNation, Brother Bear 2, and Over the Hedge, is a militant lesbian with a grating voice and an obnoxious strut. She recently proclaimed during the California Prop. 8 debate that “Everybody that knows me personally, they know I’m gay … Now, I gotta get in their face. I’m proud to be a woman. I’m proud to be a black woman, and I’m proud to be gay.”
Well, apparently she’s not so proud to be gay. Because when given the opportunity to make jokes about the nation’s leading proponent of opposite-sex marriage, President Barack Obama, she said precisely nothing. Instead, she chose to gently stroke his ego with jokes about his pecs, his dog, and his basketball skills.
Meanwhile, she saved her real ire for non-federal or non-active politicians and non-governmental figures like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity. To Obama’s hysterical laughter, she said that she hoped Limbaugh would suffer kidney failure and accused him of being the 20th hijacker. She said she wanted Sean Hannity waterboarded by Keith Olbermann. She attacked Dick Cheney, stating that if her child had a choice between getting in a car with Dick Cheney and a car with a stranger, she would tell her child to choose the stranger.
Courageous, to be sure.
But she saved her most despicable gibe for Sarah Palin, who was not attending. Apparently, Sykes isn’t only a shrinking violet when it comes to her lesbianism – she’s a shrinking violet when it comes to her sex. Noting Sarah’s absence at the dinner (her husband, Todd, attended), Sykes said that Palin had pulled out at the last minute. “Somebody should tell her that’s not really how you practice abstinence,” she chided.
This is sexism of the highest order. Sarah Palin didn’t get knocked up before her marriage – her daughter did. Why didn’t Sykes blame Todd, who was sitting right there? Or why didn’t she blame Levi, who knocked up Bristol? Or why didn’t she blame Bristol? By focusing on Sarah, she perpetuated the stereotype that the woman is utterly and totally responsible for each and every individual act of the child – a stereotype Sykes would surely reject were she not so blindly hateful of Palin.
The bottom line: both feminism and homosexuality matter less to Sykes than kissing Barack Obama’s butt. She didn’t utter a single joke about Obama’s out of control spending. Not one joke about his teleprompter. Not one joke about his visit with Chavez, his messages to Iran, his Cinco De Mayo screwup, his mastery of the Austrian language, his “world without nuclear weapons,” his spreading the wealth around, his ownership of the car companies, his tax-cheat employees.
And most of all, not a single joke about Dan Choi, the first gay Arabic linguist fired by Barack Obama under the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. Not a single joke about Obama’s interracially married parents and his refusal to stump for homosexual marriage. Sykes pledged to “get in their face” about gay marriage, but refused to get in the face of the most powerful man on earth about it. Instead, she chose to go after Rush Limbaugh and oxycontin – a choice for which she will surely be praised by the leftist media.
In certain times, such posturing buffoonery would have been ripped as “Uncle Tomming.” Imagine Richard Pryor speaking at a White House Correspondents Dinner for JFK and failing to mention the civil rights movement, instead choosing to focus on Jackie Kennedy’s hairdo and JFK’s winning smile.
Nobody has the obligation to “speak truth to power” when given the opportunity. Sometimes it’s okay just to be funny. But if one is given the opportunity to speak truth to power, sees him/herself as a champion of “speaking truth to power,” and instead chooses to spend the time excoriating the power’s opposition, that would be sycophantic stupidity of the worst kind.
That would be Wanda Sykes.

Just another mind-numbing example of the completely fake "courage" of the Ameican Left. As Mr. Shapiro pointed out, Stephen Colbert could get in President Bush's face with absolutely no worry about potential consequences. Indeed Colbert's performance only enhanced his stature in the entertainment community and increased his clout and employability. If Ms. Sykes had "roasted" President Obama concerning his opposition to same-sex marriage there would most certainly have been consequences to her and her career. The Sun King and his courtiers look like the types with rather a low tolerance for anyone "speaking truth to power" to them and self-deprecation doesn't seem like a quality they cultivate. Wanda could have been looking at spending the remainder of her days doing the eleven o'clock show at the Laff Barrel in Modesto. Your editorial on Sykes performance are all valid points. As I a left leaning person, I feel I have to acknowledge your apt criticism. Personally, I loved her performance. But her decision to leave out poking Obama on issues she certainly cares about, was hypocritical to be sure.
I thought the point of the White House Correspondent's dinner was to raise consciousness of Homelessness (the three thousand attendee's raised nearly $100,000 – or about $30/plate – why hasn't anyone mentioned that?)?
Oh, I remember, a (militant) black lesbian made fun of (faithful) white heterosexuals – that's the story.
And as for change, that's easy – it used to be the speakers poked good-hearted fun at the President, and the President returned the favor, all for a good cause (and for fun). Watched FNC & CNN at the gym this morning on the big screens. Fox covered the insults in the context of the golf commenter's joke about Pelosi, CNN just played clips of Obama being charming and Wanda kissing his ass, no mention of the insults. So millions of people who heard from CNN the lie about the person shouting at the Palin campaign rally won't hear a peep about this. Sweet.
CNN has to keep the "New Tone" myth alive, they have to feed the false dichotomy of Obama and all who went before.

I recognize that I was by no means the target audience for Sykes' "humor", but I think the larger point is that this gathering used to be a roast of the current administration and Congress, not a greatest hits (think Mafia) list of cracks against the opposition. There are plenty of screw ups by those currently in power that could have been used in a good-natured roast. I've felt since before the election that Obama lacks an ability to laugh at himself, a trait that all other presidents in recent memory (in both parties) seemed to possess.

You miss my point. I recognize that mistakes have been made and most likely mistakes will be made again, but the difference is that I won't make excuses and I won't try to justify the behavior. Just because people fail at maintaining a standard, doesn't mean that the standard is no good. Furthermore, when conservative politicians get caught in a scandal, they have a tendancy not to get re-elected.

I thought Colbert's performance was brilliant–he managed to insult *everybody* and was still funny (except for the godawful pre-filmed part that ran on for too long).
Sykes, on the other hand, I find to always be acerbic and grating. And yeah, most of her routine tends to be what I consider in bad taste, so she delivered as expected. A shame, because there are many more talented comedians and satirists out there.
But two points–L'il Ben conveniently fails to mention Rich Little's failed, anachronistic performance the year after Colbert's, which could have been in some part because he was *forbidden* to talk about certain subjects (like Iraq and WMDs). Conservatives didn't complain then that he was too easy on the President.
L'il Ben also misunderstood the Palin joke–it didn't have anything to do with whether or not she got pregnant before she was married–the joke was about promoting abstinence (which Sarah Palin does) and canceling her attendance of the dinner at the last minute (which Sarah, not Todd or Bristol, did) vs. a pun on "pulling out early" which some teens (mostly guys) will insist is a form of abstinence, or at least a way to avoid getting pregnant. Still not a great joke, but hardly as offensive or as sexist as L'il Ben makes it out to be.

Colbert's 2006 performance is the Holy Grail of political comedy. He told the president and the press off while looking them right in the eye, and while everyone else in the country knew what he was doing, it went over the SUBJECTS of his comedy's heads.
A milestone, the Mount Rushmore, the Great Pyramid of political comedy. Sykes did not have the advantage of making fun of a guy everyone already hated and a press that had enabled his war, so there is no way for her to match Colbert's effort.

The drug issue is fair game because of his remarks about ALL drug users deserving to be punished harshly. Intollerance for something he himself was guilty of at the time he said it. I don't understand this idea that Rush Limbaugh crusaded for tougher sentencing for drug users. I just spent some time searching for any evidence of this and the closest thing I could find from a respectable source including an actual quote was this.

What Sykes misses is that most of us on the Right have a sense of humor and we do not ban humor based on the source. We are not biased. I personally in the past found some of her performances funny. We love funny, but not at the expense of completely abandoning the truth and at the expense of someone with legit issues like say, oh, pain issues. Rush's ordeal with oxycontin is no different than anyone else who is addicted to drugs because they want to escape the pain of being sexually abused as a kid, or someone who has depression issues, or those who have pain due to medical issues. Many people all over the world have serious issues with arthritis pain, and pain from cancer, and pain from a thousand other medical problems. If the Democrats are so compassionate, and for the people, they totally overlook an entire class of peoples oxycontin was originally created for, and that was people in pain who did not want to be looped out of their minds while living out the last days of their lives, or in just living period. And I might add that there are tons of Hollywood folks Ms. Sykes probably knows who have been required to attend some sort of rehab because of taking oxycontin for far less justifications than Rush.

He wrote what he did about Pelosi and Reid AFTER he had made comments in the very same rant about being in favor of the death penalty for pro-lifers and gay marriage opponents. Keith Blowhardmann named Feherty "Worst Person" last week, but he wouldn't have cared a whit if he had just left it there.

I must say, though, that few of the current conservative mantras are more annoying (to me at least) than the notion that liberals are too stupid to understand our own political philosophy. I've been a lib all my life — certainly liberal enough to know that Obama is a moderate, no matter what Rush and Sean say — and, like you, have strong beliefs about the way our society should run. I'm not blindly following a messiah, I'm not being tricked into falling for socialism, and I'm not suffering from a lack of education, political or otherwise. And frankly, I do listen to Rush from time to time — when I'm in the car and NPR is too boring to take — and everything he says pushes me further away from everything you believe in. I was with you until you said that Obama was a Moderate. There isn't an issue I can think of (other than his current stance on Iraq and Afghanistan) that he is Moderate on. He's from here, and all of his friends, supporters, and political/business associates during his ascension to power were Liberal. His stances on the issues were Liberal. He once claimed there was "no difference" between himself and Bobby Rush (a former Black Panther, now Liberal politician). He attended a Liberal Church with a hateful pastor for 20 years. His voting record was very far to the Left in the Illinois Senate. His voting record in the US Senate was the 2nd most Liberal (as determined by an Independent watch-dog group). He talked Moderate during the election, but has gone back on many of those pledges.
Moderate is an insubstantial title that has no real meaning or set of core values, but calling Obama a Moderate is still an impossible stretch.

I worked for a few years to build relationships between blacks and whites to reconcile the divide between us. It is a crying shame that Miss California is being vilified and crucified for honestly answering a question with only her OPINION…INSTEAD OF lying and cheating by telling the judges what she thought they wanted to hear.
We used to be americans that believed in honesty and believed we all had the right to a peaceful opinion, but now we are a bunch of bigots on both sides insisting it is better to lie, and manipulate just to scare others into doing the same thing.
Miss California did not perpetrate a hate crime for God's sake, she answered a question that she was ASKED TO GIVE, and then gave AN HONEST ANSWER! She even apologized for her upbringing. It is not like she was out there preaching hate either. She was prodded to give an answer she was obviously uncomfortable with, and now she suffers mercilessly for it.

I do have to ask where are the good people of the homosexual community speaking out against the same atrocities being heaped upon Miss California that gays and lesbians suffer with daily?!?! I do not recall an official GOP member calling for the deaths of Carville or Begala. As much as we dislike Dead Fish Emanuel, we have not wished his death. Freedom of Speech does NOT mean that a person can say whatever they want to say. Freedom of Speech means that someone's right to say something is protected within certain limits. A person may have to suffer consequences for saying some things, but they still have the right to say them. For example, it is against the law to yell, "FIRE," in a crowded place because someone may get injured. A person has the right to say it, but they also have the consequences. Someone may not say things verbally or in print that they know aren't true. This is called slander and there are consequences for doing this.
To my knowledge Ms. Sykes did not mention the fund raising charity very often, or the purpose for the gathering.

At which time have you heard, or read, where any member of the GOP has demanded the rights of Ms. Sykes regarding free speech to be amended or revoked? I have not seen any evidence of any GOP member demanding Ms. Sykes not have the right to free speech.
You know it is funny that when we object to the validity or level of humor being used in this case; you on the Left automatically assume we are desirous of the speech police to jump out of the bushes and imprison the speaker. Some would call that projection. And some would call your assumptions ignorant and purely baseless.
Question, when soldiers die for our freedoms and rights to free speech, do they die solely as Democrats or Republicans? Or do they just die and fight as Americans? Clue to you, we as Conservatives, or as GOP members, would die for the rights of any American to have free speech. Dittos to many a Democrat. This is what makes us uniquely American. We may not agree with Ms. Sykes or you and your assumptions, but we would defend to the death your rights to say whatever it is you want to say. If you would quit assuming you know those so very well we who are members of the GOP, you would then understand we are never for taking away freedoms. Too many Americans have died or been severely wounded protecting those rights, and it is all of our duties to not have their efforts ever to have been made in vain.
We leave such restrictive free speech moves up to totalitarian dictators or statists to make. Sort of like the Chavez, Castro, Mussolini, Hitler, Stalin, types. Look them up. They do not quite resemble members of the GOP.

The joke didn't have anything to do with whether or not she got pregnant before she was married–the joke was about promoting abstinence (which Sarah Palin does) and canceling her attendance of the dinner at the last minute ("pulling out early," which Sarah, not Todd or Bristol, did) vs. a pun on "pulling out early" which some teens (mostly guys) will insist is a form of abstinence, or at least a way to avoid getting pregnant. Still not a great joke, but hardly as offensive or as sexist as L'il Ben or you make it out to be.

Truly what passes as humor today is not usually very funny. What about days when Bob Hope or Milton Berle would have ribbed both sides and left them all laughing. Comedians aren't funny anymore. I don't watch late night t.v. anymore because of the lack of real humor. The monologs are being used to sabotage people publicly. They have become the rumor mills who have the news first even if it is slanted or biased or totally untrue. Nobody seems to care. Their words are so powerful that they can totally emasculate the man in office and devalue the place of the office of the President. Hollywood money is influencing politics too much. She's a comedian. Like Colbert was at the Rep. convention. These people should actually watch and know the style of these comedians before bringing them on. Brought onto a campaign simply to try and get votes for being a potential "first woman VP", going up against a potential "first black president", who showed how unintelligent and incapable of being in politics she was in interviews and on television. Politics are rough, if you're not good at what you do and well spoken you get eaten alive, Palin could not speak. She acted like a moron always contradicting herself.

Your points are well taken. Without knowing the history, it seems very plausible that you are accurately describing the traditional context for these occasions. A "we all agree fest" doesn't seem like it would have caught on very well. I wish more people on the right would communicate in such a reasoned and clear way.

There wasn't anything funny about what she said; she was angry with them. Thing is, Rush Limbaugh is a bad person, as is Sean Hannity, and given Hannity's support of waterboarding, its obvious he doesn't believe what he preaches if he's so reluctant to undergo it.
There isn't a double standard being exerted here. What Colbert did has become legendary; what she did will be forgotten in less than a month by everyone but right wing nutjobs, and then only as an OMG WE ARE BEING PERSECUTED sort of thing.

I don't know why I bother, but Limbaugh was actually talking, quite literally, about fake soldiers, and he gave examples. He did not say every soldier who opposed the war was fake, just a few that had fooled a media so eager to find soldiers opposed to the war that they didn't bother to check and see if the ones they found were real.
When these "controversies" pop up, Limbaugh always posts his transcripts at his site. Try going there instead of Media Matters.

Wow ! I have never seen so many people who can't take a joke. It's no secret that conservatives are bitter these days, and everyone who doesn't believe their way is some kind of "Stepford Drone", but I thought she was funny, and if you have ever heard her humor before this you would know that it is exactly the way she has always done it…she didn't change anything just for the dinner.
Why is everyone putting so much emphasis on "What she should have said" or "what she shouldn't have said" ? She's a comedienne and that was a comedy monologue.
If that's not your type of humor, then listen to something else, or better yet, get the Conservative newsletter "Human Events"…that will give you some real laughs in between solicitations for pharmaceuticals and over priced books.
