Good lord, you people are hard to understand. Sawyer, of course, is a criminal and a sociopath, so maybe I'll give you that one. Ben Linus is a mass murderer, so I guess you can make that case, too, if you really want to. John Locke lived in a friggin _commune_ with people that were cultivating weed. But I guess the "conservative" approach to reality is to tune out the parts that don't serve your narrative. Look at all the people who seem to think George Bush's term in office began in 2002 and ended in 2007, as witness the phrase "Obama Recession."

Conservative? Really? You know where they stand on capital gains? SDI? School choice?

Rather than try to force characters into your own political constellation, why not identify them as characters conservatives can respect. Accomplishes the same thing (highlighting conservative values) without trying (wrongly in some cases) to co-opt the characters themselves.

I didn't say the Sawyer character was excused because he saw his father kill his mother etc etc. My point is that the flawed broken characters on Lost, while compelling to watch are certainly not heroes, for the right or the left. In the post, Sawyer is a hero, but, in real life, the right would be in the forefront supporting his lethal injection :)

@ Elaine - bad things happen all the time. Some of us have have been abused every which way possible. But then we grow up and try to become better people than the monsters that harmed us. That is the mark of becoming an adult. I refuse to believe that the majority of people who commit crimes can directly link it to a bad childhood. There comes a point that people have to grow up. The problem? Not many of them want to. And then they blame it on mommy or daddy not being there for them. I'm not saying that parents are not at fault but I certainly believe that we are all responsible for what we become. When I stand before Christ I don't believe He is going to say "it's ok, your mommy and daddy abused you" and then let my trespasses go. No, it is all about how I decide to live my life, and as a Christian, for Him. Intelligent people take the experiences they have been through and let it make them stronger adults. I think that is the way God intended for it to be.

@Nick - I loved what you wrote about conservatism. It described me a lot but I never really connected it to my values in a direct way. I just knew that I got mad as a hornet that people who are twice my age could act so stupid and never got wiser. I believe completely in forgiveness but I also believe completely in learning from your mistakes and trying not to make them again. What a dead on description you gave. Thanks a bunch!

@Ben - I loved the post. Can't wait to read more of your stuff!

Globak, a perfect capitalist machine would not turn out over a dozen anti-Iraq war movies, each of which lost millions of dollars. They were ideologically driven from start to finish with no regard for profit.

Why are you so afraid of this site catching on? There are no end of left-leaning entertainment sites to choose from. Maybe, just maybe, there's an audience for this site too. Judging by the number of comments on each post, I'd say they're off to a very good start.

I can't wait for more fiscal input from Chris Dodd on the mortgage front, or Charlie Rangel's ideas on tax reform. Maybe Obama has a plan for campaign financing, and Nancy Pelosi's new house rules will increase bipartisan cooperation between the left and the far-left wing on the Democratic party.
