Pork Flu: H1N1 Offers Harrowing Preview of ObamaCare
by Brian RossLong-time listener, first-time blogger…
Back in April, Vice President Biden uttered dire warnings about catching Swine Flu in subways and commercial airplanes. Per the usual pattern, the White House quickly apologized for “Amtrak Joe’s” remarks. But now, just a few months later, the President also has declared a national emergency. The H1N1 is spreading, and instead of 120 million expected doses, only 11 million shipped last week. In a few weeks, the vaccine may become widely available, but it hasn’t yet. Even the Obama children reportedly haven’t received the vaccine (although I hope they get immunized if that’s what their family decides).

Balboa Park, The United States of America
Personally, I think the Swine Flu hysteria is a bit over-hyped. But on the other hand, I’d rather not get sick if I can avoid it. This year is particularly important for my family because my wife is pregnant with identical twins. That type of pregnancy comes with risks already, and the H1N1 can be rough on expectant mothers. So, after doing our research, we decided she would get immunized at the first opportunity, which was this past week. In the process, we saw one possible future outcome of health care “reform” – rationing.
The H1N1 vaccine made its limited debut this past weekend in Southern California at a few government-chosen distribution centers. Near us, in Balboa Park in Encino, people lined up on the Friday starting at 3:00 a.m. By that afternoon, the daily supply had run out. So, at my wife’s (very strong) recommendation, I woke up at 5:00 a.m. on Saturday and dutifully got in line. The park was still dark outside when I arrived, with just four people camped out ahead of me in blankets and beach chairs. As daylight broke, the line grew.
By 8:00 a.m., the line was across the park and my wife and our little daughter showed up. My wife and other expectant mothers were hoping for a version of the H1N1 vaccine prepared without the “controversial” preservative Thimerosal. (There’s a movement that suspects Thimerosal causes autism. From what I’ve read, there’s no link, but I understand why concerned parents, if given the choice, would rather not risk it. Anyway, I’m no doctor, so I’ll leave the debate to our distinguished medical specialists (like, uh, John Kerry, Chris Dodd and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.).
Shortly after 8:00 a.m., word got out that only 60 doses of Thimerosal-free vaccine were available. That is, just 60 doses for all pregnant women across the entire San Fernando Valley (which has a population of over one million). Expectant mothers were told to get out of line and head to the back entrance. The park staff were admirable and helpful. They tried to organize a new line, but there was no formal system and with only 60 spaces available, people were tense. One lady with a particularly obnoxious and uncouth sense of entitlement got a coveted spot near the front of the new line, but that apparently wasn’t good enough because she went on to berate the busy staff for not making her the very first. Other women were turned away after waiting for hours, and were told to try again the next day. Borderline chaos.
By 9:00 a.m. when the immunization center finally opened, 60 expectant mothers were queued up. (If you’re wondering, yes my wife got in because I had lined up so early and managed to convince the staff to include her.) I was back at the other entrance, waiting with my daughter for the regular vaccine… behind us, nearly a thousand other people were jostling in line.
This is 2009, in a middle-class L.A. suburb, but it looked like a Soviet Union bread line. I know long waits for medical treatment are not unknown here. L.A. emergency rooms are routinely overburdened with uninsured people who use the hospital as a basic clinic. That is a different brand of chaos, and I don’t pretend to know how to fix it. But what I do know is that my wife and I work our tails off to have private insurance so we can use a private U.S. health care system that is the envy of the world. But if the government takes over, that choice will probably disappear. Pelosi, Obama and Reid (oh my!) are dead set on “reforming” the exceptionalism right out of our system. They’re still pushing a public option that most Americans don’t want, trying to sneak it past us at midnight in thousand-page bills, or tacked quietly onto unrelated legislation. The revised drafts and permutations each week are endless and numbing. And the estimated costs, even though ultimately unknowable, are already staggering.
The Ruling Party’s current brand of health care “reform” is just the latest illness coming out of D.C. Forget the Bird Flu and Swine Flu, we first have to shake the Pork Flu. Leaders (from both parties) continue to siphon billions into pork-barrel earmarks. This past year, they rushed to pass the largest stimulus spending package in history. Even if massive spending and debt were the cure for what ails us (?), most of the money hasn’t even been spent into our economy yet, and a second stimulus package is already being discussed. (Expect to see the stimulus money poured into the economy just before the next election cycles.) On top of the Pork Flu, we’ve been hit with more than 30 cases of CZARS, as well as waves of “Botch-ulism” (botched bank bailouts, a botched Gitmo strategy, botched treatment of our allies and enemies abroad…). America has a fever (although maybe not the kind Al Gore warned of), but the cure is looking worse than the disease. Forget one flu vaccine, what will happen when we are stuck with socialized medicine for 330 million people? Medical treatment will be rationed out under cheerless and impenetrable bureaucratic rules. People with the means to afford treatment will be denied it for other reasons, such as they are elderly and have outlived their social usefulness.
Need cancer treatment? Take a pain pill.
Dennis Miller has joked, in all seriousness, that Government-run health care will resemble “the DMV with wounds.” Well, on Saturday I caught a glimpse of future chaos and it is deeply unsettling. With some legitimately needy people lacking health care, pockets of our system do need repair. But we have an entire toolbox at our disposal, not just a sledgehammer. All I’m saying is, let’s slow down a bit and think this over. Have a REAL dialogue and debate. And while we’re at it, keep riding on the subways and airlines – they employ hardworking people.

My 3 kids, and maybe my wife, had the Swine Flu already. Got them the Tamyflu medication, they did OK. A kid in our local HS died from it. Why this delay in the vaccine?
Saw a great picture the other day, folks waiting in line to get the shot with a guy holding up a sign asking how they liked the public health care preview.
Brian, the whole global vaccine program is designed to kill you and your wife and your children and all of the rest of us, over the next 40 years. Why would you trust the Government to shoot substance X into your family's arm? Don't you know there are too many people in the world and it is necessary to cull the herd to make the World safe for Prince Phillip's giraffe park? You should not listen to your wife either, you must stand up as a man to protect your family from government brainwashing and propaganda. They practice social Darwinism and only the one's smart enough not to trust the Government to shoot substance X into their family will survive.
"Other women were turned away after waiting for hours, and were told to try again the next day. Borderline chaos"
I don't get that statement. Surely they weren't having more FLOWN in so that must mean that they already had it, if that's the case then why not give it out on a first come first served basis?
IMO Government will NEVER get any form of business right. EVERYTHING that they have meddled in is in the red and ready for bankruptcy. If people want good health care then all they need to do is get off their lazy arses, find a job, sign up for their program and PRESTO, all fixed.
….most gov't hires over the last 15 years have been based on political considerations and not on professional status and competance…….as for the political realm take one look at napolitano or sebelius and ask yourself Why are they there? Now, are you going to trust them or your personal physician…..cheers
If the democrats have their way, this is exactly what we'll have for future health care.
And the only reason is to try and hide the fact that Medicare and Medicaid are going broke. They need to mask that, and their brilliant idea is to hide it by forcing everyone into it.
That way every one will be facing the same problems, not just those who clung to the government teat.
this whole thing stinks to high heaven…
This is a particularly ordinairy starin of flu. They predicted 30,000 deaths by Nov 1- they have 1,000. In the scheme of things this is even less deadly than the regular ol' flu bug.
But if you mix it with H5N1, or avian flu- it becomes easily transmitted, and quite deadly. At the very best, this is a payoff to BigPharma for caving on National Health Care, and tens of millions of worthless doses will be given-
And many will have adverse reactions. Some will die because of that. Thermidosol and Squalene- adjuvants meant to 'turbocharge' the immune system- might very well be the cause of Gulf War Syndrome.
At worst, well 'culling the herd' comes to mind…
Here in Mississippi state hospital I just got my H1N1 vaccination. I walked up 4 hours after the vaccinations started, filled out the paperwork in under a minute, sat with a nurse in under another minute, and left a minute later. We have about 7000 employees at our hospital and it seems everyone who wanted to get vaccinated did so this morning. My kids are scheduled to get their shots at their pediatrician's office next week after they take delivery of their supply of the nasal spray vaccines.
Mississippi traditionally ranks about 50th out of 50 states on every measure of health care quality, but maybe California could take some lessons from Mississippi about distributing vaccines.
Yeah but I find that number wierd
60 Deaths in America was reported on a Friday
1000 Deaths on the following monday.
This made no sense, a nice round hundred from 60+ on the previous Friday? I also heard from a couple of radio call in's that Dr's were reporting all cases of Flu as swine, same with deaths.
Sounds like ginning up fear to me
Kit, we were told that there were 60 doses of Thimerosal-free vaccine available each day (Friday, Saturday and Sunday). Pregnant women were given priority for those doses. When the Friday line filled up, the overflow were told to return Saturday. If they did, they got priority. So for the other expectant mommies (some of whom had been waiting hours, or their husbands had been waiting), the 60 slots on Saturday filled up quickly. Again, the overflow were told to try again the next day, Sunday. Why they didn't just give it all on one day, to spare pregnant women hours on their feet, I don't know. That's your Government Health Care system at work, I guess…

Maybe this whole H1N1 manufactured "crisis" is a good thing, if it can illustrate in stark reality what government-run "health care" looks like. Maybe, just maybe it can wake up some of the o-zombies that are still behind it.

"One lady with a particularly obnoxious and uncouth sense of entitlement". Ah, LA! Where decorum is the latest foreign concept. "Shame" is so last decade….

It takes a long time to grow the virus in eggs, then isolate it to make the vaccine. They identified the strain last spring and have been growing it ever since, and it is just not being distributed.
By the time they develop a vaccine, the virus and mutated and they have to start all over.
It was Michelle Obama?
No, she's got a staff of four assistants in charge of being obnoxious for her.
Gee… Obama donated enough of the USA allocation to Africa…. Don't be so selfish!
Any other nation so short of vaccines? NOPE!
No, Rosie O'donel, rushing to get to her date with the Super Model after she stood up A. Jolie
Well it may be a "national emergency" but it isn't a "crisis." That term is reserved for GOP administrations and guys like Bush. I seem to recall that in 2004 there was a shortage of flu vaccine and the pompous bloviators of the MSM were demanding that "the administration be held responsible" and saw the shortage as "another failure by the Bush administration." They went on and on for weeks about the "vaccine crisis" with wall-to-wall tearful interviews of expectant mothers and elderly folks all worried about the "potentially fatal consequences of the flu." Now we have an even worse vaccine shortage and the reaction is bupkus.
Also – "Culling the herd????" I'm not the paranoid type but after the last nine months of environmental hyperventilating you have to wonder if the save-the-planet types aren't nerving themselves for the next step – The elimination of the, ah, undesirable element of society.
thinking man is thinking right…
Why the national crisis declaration from 1,000 deaths with most having underlying medical conditions? 30,000 people die each year from influenza. More than 4,000 people die every year from asthma. 2,000 children die in car crashes each year. Nearly 400 Americans die each year due to drug allergies from penicillin alone. What about the 200 people who die every year from food allergies?
– Where is the national emergency for these Americans?
This is the first year the CDC (government) has been in charge of distributing vaccines. Epic fail! Even last year the doctors, hospitals and clinics purchased, received and distributed through the manufacturers.
– The government has spent $2 billion on this untested vaccine to date of taxpayer money as a bribe to BigPharma to go along with ObamaCare but the players in Congress refused to agree to Obama’s, word in closed door negotiations, not to renegotiate drug costs and BigPharma walked. Who is getting played?
There were no restrictions on travel for Mexico or monitoring of the border when this broke in July. Why? This is an Obamacare test run. Expect a mandatory round of shots next year, and the year after that, and…
– H.R. 3200 had language for child forced vaccines and home inspection for compliance. Insanity. Let's see what the new Pelosi bill today has hidden in over 1,900 pages. Parental rights beyond the point of a needle!
Sounds like most people didn't want the shot?
As to Thimerosal, is there any wonder parents question vaccine studies funded and executed by BigPharma?
– Eleven years ago Andrew Wakefield raised the question whether the vaccine program was as safe as it could be. The UK government and BigPharma responded by removing the option of single vaccines, and turned something which should have been a medical/scientific issue into a political one. The ugly face of "parents as troofer" from the drive by media for advocating transparency is one of the unpleasant results. While 1 in 100 children in the UK are now diagnosed with autism.
Yes, take mercury out of vaccines but then no longer offer single inoculation and put mercury into flu shots and make them mandatory for pregnant women. But mainstream cut and paste media wont tell you this because selective quoting of quotes to quote. Not to mention BigPharma has federally mandated immunity so move along, nothing to see here.
– Autism Spectrum Disorder: 2/10,000 births in 1987 to about 10/10,000 births in 1994, a nearly five-fold increase.
The U.S. Department of Education released the figure of 1 in 67 kids were receiving services under the diagnosis of ASD for the year 2007. (Highest concentration in California.) The 1 in 150 autistic U.S. children number that is constantly quoted is now almost 12 years old as it was released in approximately 2005 and studied eight year old kids. 1 in 67 . . . how bad does this have to get?
– Yes, take mercury out of vaccines but then no longer offer single inoculation and put mercury into flu shots and make them mandatory for pregnant women. Flu shots for pregnant moms. Hep B at birth. Chickenpox and MMR on the same day at one year old. Rotavirus, Hep B, Hep A, and on and on. What of the less intense, less front-loaded schedule in place back before the autism epidemic began? Back when the autism rate was, 1 in 10,000 and we still managed to stave off wholesale plagues.
I get that statement. If you have been waiting in line since 5 a.m. and then they tell the pregnant ladies to waddle on over to the back of the building and the first twenty to make it get the dose… the heavily pregnant, long time on their feet, plan aheaders might get a little ticky with the 2 month pregnant, run to the back, show up at 9 a.m. chicky.
And for those unable to get vaccinated and told to return the next day – it is not a guarantee they offered, it was the chance to try, try again. Each facility does not know what they will get or when. At least that is the case in WA state. They know that vaccine has been shipped, but do not know where it is going or how much or in what form. I live out where cows outnumber humans. I imagine the vaccine will make it out here by Spring.
The best parents of infants can do at this point is keep babies away from others, limit your contact with others, scour your house and car until your hands are raw and pray for the best. The bad thing is that pregnant women have to go to the doctor… in buildings where sick people congregate (et cetera).
If the vaccines work, why is everyone who has been vaccinated deathly afraid of those who aren't? Families never travel outside of the US or come into contact with those who do or illegal immigrants too, right?
– You may think adverse vaccine reaction is a minor concern, and for most children it may be, but it still has serious consequences for an appreciable minority. It is also preventable, through exemption or altered vaccination schedules. Often children get their vaccines while visiting a doctor because they are sick, but to reduce adverse reaction, one should never get a vaccine when their immune system is weak. Parents need to make an informed decision and not be led to go along with the expediency of one stop doctor visits.
Just as people listen to the call of "junk science" with global warming, others may be waking up to pay-to-play BigPharma vaccine schedules and studies.
– Elections have consequences as they say and many people are realizing that corporations, congress, and media might not always be transparent. Visions of global vaccine dollars turned into campaign contributions can be blinding. Be informed.
Holy Double Mint Gum!
Congratulations on the impending births. Enjoy your deep and restful slumbers now.
This is what happens when you make anything free or offer unlimited supply and this is what getting a doctor's appt. will look like after the government takes over health care. That, and we'll have third world doctors working 16 hours days to try and keep up with demand.
The day after ObamaCare is live, we will have 50million+ people standing in line.
The next day, will be no different and so on for the rest of America's future. Future jobs will include, "Line sitter", "Food gopher", "Restroom valet", "Child entertainer" and many more.
Yes, the face of ObamaCare will be a laughing Joker.
Wanda, thank you! Or, since they are twins, I guess thank you thank you.
"Restroom valet"
One could make a killing towing a porta potty or two to these lines and charging by the use.
Draw a picture of a Polar bear on the Door. Throw in some "Eco-friendly harsh 1ply toilet paper", and people will literally stand in line, to stand in line, to be green and use them. Those still believing in Climate change of course.
Beautifully written. That Dennis Miller quote is depressingly accurate. God help us.

Cyette, thank you. I was able to navigate the chaos to protect my women and unborn boys, but many others weren't. Hopefully, in a few weeks, there will be enough flu vaccine available to put this all to rest. (And hopefully that vaccine will not be adulterated with preservatives and adjuvants that, while perhaps not toxic, sure are scary enough to make caring parents pause.
Dennis is a top-notch comedian, so when he tells the joke it's funny. When I tell it, it's just depressingly accurate. But I'll settle for that. We need a little more truth Out There.

H1N1 is Obama's Katrina!
Where is the MSM! on the handling of this??
It's kinda fun making money off of suckers isn't it?
Nice article, Brian. And welcome! "Pork Flu" — love that, and how true. And 'botch-ulism'…ha! There's a whole lot of that going around today…
If you hate "big governement" and don't want anything to do with "Obamacare" than for god sakes, don't get a government funded flu shot. For that matter, don't use your government funded sewer or water system either, and don't even think of driving on a government funded road or using a government funded runway or air control system or a government provided power grid, local, state or national parks are a no-no, and please do not ask a government funded fire truck or paramedic to help you out when disaster strikes your home….The government just can't do any of this right!
Gary, thank you! I'm pleased to be in such great company. I look forward to contributing more. Botch-ulism is the order of the day. When I watch the news, I sometimes fight off nausea.
And now we know why Obama declared the national medical emergency. Administration of the vaccine through schools by departments of health personnel. Three children in NY have been immunized without parental permission so far and that we are aware of with one sent to the hospital.
http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/education/200...
Just as you can't be trusted to raise your child not to be a racist homophobe so the schools must teach diversity and two male penguin love (reading and math are so passe), so too you can't be trusted to take orders from your government to submit your child to an UNTESTED vaccine cocktail administered by a government worker.
