Burt’s Eye View: Hollywood Elitists Through the Ages
by Burt PrelutskyA lot of people seemed shocked to discover that the folks at the National Endowment of the Arts were so ready, even anxious, to devote their talents to propagandizing on behalf of Obama and his administration. That merely proves that a lot of people haven’t been paying attention.
It’s my guess that a majority of those involved with the NEA — even those few who are talented — are always eager to roll over for left-wing politicians. Partly it’s because they are so hungry for attention and partly because they lack anything resembling a moral compass.

Allow me to give you a few notable examples of the way that people who earn their living in the areas of art and entertainment can voluntarily blind themselves to those matters that have moral implications. Just recently, we got to watch a swarm of Hollywood retards climbing all over themselves in a rush to defend Roman Polanski, a piece of Euro-trash who confessed to having sex with a 13-year-old child. All sorts of big name, small brain, celebrities lined up to sign petitions on his behalf. By attesting to his character, they merely confirmed that they lacked any themselves.
Hollywood is the place where the members of the Motion Picture Academy were once so angry at producer Jack Warner for casting Audrey Hepburn, instead of Julie Andrews, in “My Fair Lady,” that they refused to even nominate Ms. Hepburn for her terrific performance as Eliza Doolittle. However, proving, as usual, that they shouldn’t be allowed to vote even when politics aren’t involved, these lunkheads then gave the 1964 Oscar for Best Picture to “My Fair Lady,” which enabled the very same Jack Warner to stride onstage to thunderous applause.
Then there was the matter of Cliff Robertson and David Begelman. When Robertson, an Oscar-winning actor, discovered that Begelman, the head of Columbia Pictures, had forged his signature on a $10,000 check, he blew the whistle. After a police investigation, it turned out that Begelman had been financing his gambling habit with a lot of other people’s money, including Judy Garland, whom he had blackmailed. The upshot was that Robertson had his acting career short-circuited, whereas Begelman, who was only sentenced to community service, was then hired to run MGM.
Shortly after the scandal occurred, I happened to be having lunch with my agent in a restaurant loaded with Hollywood types. When Begelman entered, there was such a flurry of people competing for his attention, you could have mistaken them for a covey of Cardinals vying to smooch the Pope’s ring.
It’s not just actors, directors and producers, who act like dopes. Consider writer Norman Mailer. Perhaps because he was the fellow who once tried to settle a domestic dispute by stabbing the second of his six wives, Jack Abbott, who was serving time for bank robbery and murder, decided he’d be the ideal pen pal. Mailer became so enamored of Abbott’s writing, he not only used his considerable influence to get Abbott’s book, “In the Belly of the Beast,” published, but got this career criminal paroled. In New York, quite naturally, Abbott became the toast of the literati crowd, but only for a little while because six weeks after his release, Abbott stabbed 22-year-old Richard Adan to death.
Saving the best for last brings us to Leni Riefenstahl. In Berlin, in the 30s, as in Hollywood at any time, it wasn’t what you knew but who you knew, and Leni was a chum of Joseph Goebbels, Hitler’s minister of propaganda. Think of him as the head of Germany’s NEA. It was Herr Goebbels who helped get her the opportunity to make “Triumph of the Will” and “Olympia,” a couple of over-wrought “documentaries” dedicated to hyping the Third Reich.
After the end of World War II and for the remaining half of her 101 years, American and European cineastes — the same twerps who do cartwheels over Michael Moore’s propaganda flicks — showered her with honors and acclaim. This in spite of the fact that although she claimed she wasn’t a Nazi and would barely have recognized Hitler if she’d tripped over him, had said, “To me, Hitler is the greatest man who ever lived. He truly is without fault, so simple and at the same time possessed of masculine strength.” Sort of sounds like Chris Matthews going on about Obama or Oliver Stone mooning over Hugo Chavez or Fidel Castro, doesn’t it?
In 1993, Riefenstahl had the gall to deny that she deliberately attempted to create pro-Nazi propaganda. For good measure, she claimed she was disgusted that “Triumph of the Will” was used in such a way. It was reminiscent of Captain Renault’s shock upon discovering that gambling was taking place in the backroom at Rick’s, all the while pocketing his winnings.
Having seen her most famous films, I can assure you that unless you cut the movies up into a million little slivers of celluloid and used them for toothpicks, there was no other conceivable use for them except as Nazi propaganda.
Moreover, in 1934, Riefenstahl said that “Mein Kampf” had made a tremendous impression on her. “I became a confirmed National Socialist after reading the very first page. I felt a man who could write such a book should undoubtedly lead Germany. I felt very happy that such a man had come.”
She was so impressed with the book that she wrote the author a fan letter. The letter led to a meeting. The meeting led to her directing “Victory of Faith,” a movie about the fifth Nazi Party rally at Nuremberg. So much for her claim that she really only knew Hitler from his photos.
In fact, for someone who spent so many years churning out propaganda films, she was rather inept when it came to lying. For instance, on one occasion she claimed that she was totally unaware that concentration camps even existed, while another time she swore that she only worked for the Nazis because Goebbels had threatened to send her to a concentration camp if she didn’t cooperate.
Frankly, what confounds me is why she wasted even a single second lying about her past. I mean, even if she had been good at it, why bother? After all, sensible and moral people never believed her self-serving malarkey; and, as for the celebrity crowd, they simply didn’t care. They never do.

oh how history repeats itself.
nothing like a historical perspective from an honest man…
The trouble with the 'monied elite' and those who feel compelled to tell others what to do is that they, too are flawed humans.
With feet of clay like everyone else. And, as the old axiom says 'the highway to hell is paved with good intentions'- so the nominal fact that they 'mean well' counts for little.
It is why the more highly evolved turn on humanism and embrace more enobling concepts. Hollywood gives these concepts lip service but really is all about greed, power, control, and other lower, more base aspects
of humanity. The cautionary tale of the talented but hugely flawed Norman Mailer is illuminating.
So keep this in mind when the so-called 'intelligentsia' speaks to you- of things they know little, or even nothing, about…
That picture of Norman Mailer says it all. Can't make it through the day – Have a toke, have a snort, have a drink, have six or seven high-priced prostitutes come in to try and help you get the little thing up cause you have a political fund raiser to get to tonite CAPITALISM SUCKS ! CONSERVE CONSERVE CONSERVE and you got to feel refreshed.! All you ultra-lib pals'll be there.. yeah, ain't this the life. CAPITALISM SUCKS! AMERICA BETTER WAKE UP OR OUR PLANET'S GOING TO DIE CONSERVE! all the champagne and cavier you can eat..CAPITALISM SUCKS – CONSERVE THE PLANET and in the backroom, you know the one with the noses on the wall and the sniffing sounds.. well, there's more of what really holds you together. and don't mind that little room off to the side.. that's just the raping room. It's soundproof.
Roman Polanski, David Begelman, Norman Mailer, and Leni "There was a War?" Riefenstahl all at one time and right before Breakfast. Burt have a heart will-ya, at least you didn't mention Sean "The Useless Idiot" Penn. Here's hoping lunch goes better. Damn good article though.
I have devoted the last twelve years of my life to studying history, art history and philosophy and some how I missed the books that described how "artists" are the most intelligent people in the world. Granted there have been a few of exceptional genius but for the life of me I do not understand why so many people perceive them as some type of intellectual elite. I guess it is more of a reflection on the sad state of the general level of education in this country and the failure of our schools to instill in students the basic critical thinking skills.
In the middle ages, artisans and artists were the same thing. Each did his labor to the glory of God. When God was abandoned, artists became God. You've got to have some kind of guidance from outside yourself to give your life meaning. Without religion, artistic inspiration was all that was left. Unfortunately, artistic inspiration by itself has no moral compass at all.

How about some names/links about who showered Riefenstahl with honors?
…a swarm of Hollywood retards climbing all over themselves in a rush to defend Roman Polanski, a piece of Euro-trash who confessed to having sex with a 13-year-old child.
Sir, this is the most succinct and accurate statement about Hollywood and the "entertainment" industry that I have read in quite a while.
Thank you.
The most hilarious aspect of Hollywood elitism to me is when an actor is proclaimed an expert simply on the basis of a role they once played. Martin Sheen is an expert political analyst since he once played the President on TV. (Never mind he didn't finish his first semester of college.) Sally Field, Jessica Lange, and Some-Other-City-Gal are presented before a congressional committee as authortiies on the trials and tribulations of modern farms. Tom Hanks is our leading World War II historian because he was in Saving Private Ryan. Oh, yeah, he is the Leading Chastiser from Philiadelphia of all of us evil conservatives because we just haven't done enough to raise awarness for AIDS…
Sickening. Everyone has to have some kind of god to worship, and these individuals have clearly chosen one of the basest–fame.
Funny…when I think of the word "artist," Will Farrell or Lindsey Lohan just don't come to mind.
NO LONGER THE SILENT MAJORITY!
Hollywood elitists are nothing more than worthless, self-important, anti-American egotists. They spew their venom to the world while praising themselves and giving each other endless awards so they won't feel guilty for participating in their deviant lifestyles. They preach "tolerance" but they are not satisfied with tolerance, THEY WANT FULL ACCEPTANCE OF THEIR SICK LIFESTYLES AND MENTAL ILLNESSES. In reality, they act the part of heroes while they surrounding themselves with adoring, WEAK MINDED WORSHIPERS WHO WILL NEVER TELL THEM THE TRUTH.

Great read Burt, and further illuminates why we should never listen to a Hollywood twit, present company excluded, for advice on how to live a decent moral life.
Which is why I used quotation marks around the word. "Artists" is being in the broadest definition to denote some person involved in one of the many fields of arts. And I would agree and go on to say that fully 90% of actors and actresses would fail to qualify as artists.
Just to point out the obvious – and that is what I do best – M*A*S*H* was quite the bit of leftist propaganda. Even the military hating crew there had their Judas willing to brave climbing the barbed wire topped wall and make a run for freedom.
I'll never forget how Paul Newman, who is often venerated as one of the greatest talents in cinema history was the Sean Penn of his day, protesting for America to unilaterally disarm because if we got rid of our nuclear weapons everyone else would. Yeah. he was that smart.
There are a few who would qualify under the pretentious "artiste" label. Just ask them.
So very true, so very funny and so very sad.
Charlie Chaplin was very enamored with her. Clive Davis gets cantancerous when people mention Leni in anything but glowing terms. He can (unlike the idiots who deride her) … separate woman from film and "something tells me that if Riefenstahl were alive and young today, her agent would have his pick of Hollywood blockbusters. "
That is two. The list continues.
I've always felt DaVinci fell into the "genius" camp. But that goes beyond his artistic ability.
Exactly why I've never liked M*A*S*H* and never will.
That's a long-standing folly of the artiste class. Dates back at least to Shelley and his assertion that poets are the unacknowledged legislators of the world.
Thanks for the reminder. While the Romantic artists may have produced some great art, as you pointed out with Shelley, many of them did have an inflated opinion of their intellectual capabilities. Many true intellectuals and philosophers of the era made the same mistake of attributing too much substance to what were essentially only excellent representations of Man's emotional depth.
It ain't just the monied elite who feel compelled to determine how others should be forced to live. Think ACORN foot soldiers.
There are people from all monetary classes, all political persuasions, all races, all ethnicities, and both genders (as well as a few that fall in between) who are absolutely 100% convinced that unless an all powerful government is in complete control of society, everything will go to hell and we'll descend into chaos. All they argue about is who's in the driver seat.
Back in 2006 my town got seriously flooded, about 1/4 of the town under water. The village services were totally swamped. The public works garage was under about 3 feet of water. The police were totally over whelmed. The fire dept. couldn't even begin to meet all the requests for pumping out basements. Heck, probably half of both police and fire personal were probably flooded out as well.
So, what did we citizens do? Did we start riots, looting, raping and pillaging? Unbelievably: No! We all pitched in and helped each other out. Citizens were taking their own vehicles and blocking off flooded roads. The police would stop by from time to time to make sure things were okay. People went door to door offering help to their neighbors.
My brother burned through 5 pumps in 48 hours keeping his basement from flooding too bad. He had plumbers he'd never met showing up with free pumps. Our sister works for a plumber answering service and put out a call to her plumbers for help. And they did.
My point is, We The People do not need people to tell us what to do. We can act quite civilized on our own thank you. We don't need any demagogues in Hollywood or Washington ordering us around like little toy robots.
Hows this for starts:

"She had a greatness to her and she had amazing longevity," said Sid Gannis, a Hollywood producer and Academy vice president. "There was no special debate whatsoever in the decision to include her on the list, and I personally agree with it."
"Yes, Hitler was evil, but I think it was proper to have her name there," Elton John said. "She was a great filmmaker, and as an artist myself, I think she deserved to be there."
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer said: "I don't have a problem with it. She was a genius, and her movies were innovative and still copied today. … When I was making commercials years ago, I remember one where the director stole directly from 'Triumph of the Will.'"

Incredibly, the Hollywood audience in attendance gave loud applause in response to the televised photo and name of the German filmmaker who used concentration camp prisoners as extras.

Don't forget the genius of celebrities Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins, who actually *named their son* after the Jack Henry Abbott you mention here. A murderer, yes, but he was the "toast of the literati"! Anyone who can be the toast of the literati can't be all bad, right? Let's all name our kids after murderers and rapists! What courage and sensitivity it must have taken to stab an innocent man in the chest!
And PS, Roman Polanski didn't just "have sex with a 13 year old." He drugged, raped, and sodomized a 13 year old.
Therefore, I predict a baby boom of "Romans" in Hollywood next year.
Excellent post about one of the worlds ultimate elitist liberals.
"Partly it’s because they are so hungry for attention and partly because they lack anything resembling a moral compass. "
Writing for Big Hollywood must feel like taking a long bath Burt. Exposing the worst American export – the liberal entertainment industry – is a marathon not a sprint.
Susan Sarandon named her son after Jack Abbott. He carries the first and middle name of a multiple murderer and the last name of Tim Robbins. I wonder what the kid does for a living? Whatever it is I bet he spends alot of time in therapy
The problem with following a "moral compass" is that you continually run into walls, chasms and other impediments. I'd prefer a Moral GPS – not only will it get me where I WANT to go, it shows me all kinds of helpful moral shortcuts and scenic moral detours. Best of all, I can eventually wind up in the exact same place as the guy with the compass, but I'm gonna be the one with a story worth telling
Like it or not, a work of art – even "just" a story – outlives EVERYTHING… even "morality." Whatever you think about, say, Polanski, the reality is this: A century or two from now, people WILL be watching "Chinatown" in some form or another, and no one will really care about what sort of man he was or wasn't.
They absolutely did. I bet that kid spent alot of time on the streets buying drugs and now spends most of his time on the therapists couch. I still remember watching his mother in that Louis Malle picture about the pre-teen prostitute in the Storyville section of new Orleans circa 1919 licking her fingers and manipulating her nipples for the EJ Bellocq's camera. That's your basic Susan ..
Glenn Beck, yesterdays show, Tell it like it is and say it how you see it!
She's a ..whore. They all are! Everybody somebody's bitch out there in that industry You're either a pimp or a whore. Usually both.
Riefenstahl is a difficult problem. There's no doubt that she was an evil person who used her talents to horrible ends, but there's also no denying that she possessed a singular vision and is among the most influential filmmakers of all time. Nothing good can be learned from her life, but plenty good can be learned from her craft.
And Mailer has written many incredible novels (Naked and the Dead? Best WWII novel ever).
My feeling on the matter? "Naked and the Dead was awesome, Norm, but I'm sorry. You still gotta go to jail."
Why must a majority my posts first be "approved" by the site administrator? Is that not censorship?
In some prisons In The Belly Of The Beast is referred to as the bible.
Speaking of stealing from Riefenstahl, remember Obama's stadium extravaganza at the Dem convention last year?
At least Newman's Own still thrives.
the only issue we take with your reply is that the ACORN and other low level thugs are compelling others by their own volition. It is the 'monied elite' that give them impetus.
These are just poor slobs who have been given dominion over others, albeit on a very low level. It is also why they cannot be prosecuted- for they then would be impossible to procure. Make sense?
How about a baby boom of Brutus' across the fruited plains?
I always found it strange, the old saying that artists must suffer for their art.
How come it's the audience that ends up suffering the most?
Burt,
The Norman Mailer and Cliff Robertson incidents are so typical of Liberals hurting the innocent and rewarding the guilty. Evan Sayet's lecture at the Heritage Foundation about the inability to make value judgments leads one to always make the wrong decision illustrates this dynamic as well.
This piece is so clear and brilliant.
Thank you.
No it's not.
"Congress shall make no law…abridging the freedom of speech"
This ain't congress, this is private property. They can do pretty much what ever they want. If this were a subscription site, you would have some redress under the terms of the contract since you're paying them.
Al Gore wins an oscar for 'An Inconvenient Truth'. mr. Gore. Are you 'CHICKEN LITTLE and IS THE SKY FALLING, or perhaps 'The Boy Who Cried Wolf'? The simpliest of children's storys Mr. Gore. You Mr. Gore, are a dance man scumbag, a snake oil salesman. It's time you take your song and dance routine to another town. Us, 'rubes', are tired of the 'act'. Start trotting boy.
Whatever you do, don't read Mailer's "The Castle in the Forest". You will no longer be using "incredible" and "Mailer" together in the same way.
ACORN was only one example. How about the 50% + 1 who voted to have taxes raised on the rich, and the money given to them?
believe it was Thomas Jefferson who once said 'if you give one man the right to vote himself into another man's packet, he will never knowingly vote himself out'
Kinda sums it up, eh?
Word.
Madison, Adams, Franklin, Washington, they all knew the dangers of centralized government.
The old story goes, following the final vote accepting the constitution, on his way out of the conference some one shouted to Ben Franklin 'what kind of government do we have?'
He replied "A republic, if you can keep it.'
a constitutional republic with limited suffrage, to boot. That's been gone for some time…
"Partly it’s because they are so hungry for attention and partly because they lack anything resembling a moral compass."
I would only add, "or anything resembling genuine talent." Most celebutards are blessed by nature with nothing greater than beautiful bone structure and a knack for playing make-believe, which are the same things all cute children possess. Also like cute children, they're not deep thinkers and often retreat to living in a fantasy land.
Why anybody thinks these knot-heads should be given a platform to spout political and moral imbecility – much less have those imbecilic thoughts listened to – is utterly beyond me.
then again, DaVinci was as much a scientist as he was an artist.
to quote Gene Hackman in Crimson Tide: "We're here to defend democracy, not practice it."
ah, to hear the "literati" all crying out as one "et tu Brute?"
It's a common human flaw to believe that success in one field grants a person standing in others. For example, who hasn't met the stereotypical lawyer/doctor/architect/pilot/CEO (take your pick) who thinks he's God's gift to humanity on any given subject matter?
What makes performers so insufferable is that their very field of endeavor has such a low intellectual threshold for entry in the first place, they so overwhelmingly lean to the left, and because they're celebrities the media tends to broadcast their mindless drivel far and wide. Furthermore, to a far greater extent than the aforementioned professions, they are surrounded by, fawned over, and cheered on by legions of attendants, sycophants, and fans who constantly fuel their enormous egos. In short, among the arrogant of society, celebrities have the weakest of all possible justifications for being so.
I have close friends who are doctors & lawyers and they occasionally exhibit some of these traits, but they also have some of the sharpest minds around (and some restraint), so it's not too bad. But listening to airheaded actors or singers pontificate on anything of import? you gotta be kidding me…
obama won 2 grammys……..
I remember watching clips of "Triumph of the Will" in a film class at Ball State. The professors were praising her talents in framing shots and editing. I maintain there might be some directors out there with just as much talent who didn't help in the decimation of Europe and the erradication of millions of people. Maybe we should put Leni in the dustbin.
Then again, I'm a simple-minded Midwesterner.
Possibly longer ago than that. Time was, people didn't really know where feelings, ideas and creativity came from. In some cultures was assumed that they came from Somewhere Else – from the spirit world (hence the word "inspiration"), from muses, or from the gods. So a poet was somebody touched by the supernatural, a special person in touch with the Divine (or at least the Spooky). Some poets were keepers of tribal law, history, and mythology – such as the Welsh bards – and so played an important role in both politics and culture. Depending on the country and the period, artists and their products could also be highly-valued ornaments with which "civilized" kings and potentates decorated their courts.
Sheesh, my college film professor practically had orgasms over her. And Stalin's court propagandist Eisenstein.
"(Naked and the Dead? Best WWII novel ever)."
Nah. The Caine Mutiny.
Hollywierd. How apt.
So I think there's frequently been an aura of "specialness" surrounding people who could communicate emotions, ideas and images in an aesthetically pleasing or at least entertaining way. What's varied over the years has been the degree to which their products are taken seriously. Leonardo was a brilliant artist, but he painted pretty much what his bosses told him to paint. To them, he wasn't a purveyor of profound truths – he was a hired servant, the very best that money could buy. As you pointed out, however, the Romantics had themselves convinced of their superior ability to FEEL – and therefore experience Reality and Truth directly (as opposed to intellectually and abstractly, like those icky scientists).
A lot of the problem is that today's celebutards have never held down a real job above the waitress/car wash level, and have never in their adult lives been middle class- they just skipped over that, going straight from scraping by to millionaires.
For reading somebody else's words. It's his only talent.
Why did I just think of Hillary and her "ducking gunfire" visit?
Ha! Like Neil Innes says at the beginning of "Protest Song," "Ladies and gentlemen, I've suffered for my music. Now it's your turn…"
Speaking of which, "Protest Song" (on one of the Monty Python albums" is a pretty good send-up of 60s-era protest songs in general and Bob Dylan in particular. Especially Dylan's wretched harmonica playing. Highly recommended.
And of course in some places and periods, playwrights and actors used to be placed in the same category as beggars, thieves and prostitutes…
What I'm not sure of is, what drives these shifts in attitude towards art and artists? Why does one age consider a playwright just an idle scribbler while another age looks to him for profound insights? Just because someone feels very very deeply that he has Something To Say, and is maybe pretty good at saying it, why do so many of us feel we must sit at his feet and be taught…whatever lessons he thinks he has for us? To put it another way, who the f**k do Percy Shelley or Norman Mailer think they are? And who do WE think they are?
Just askin'…
Dear JHM: Thanks for calling it to my attention. I hadn't been aware that Big Hollywood had changed my wording. In the original article, I used the word "raped." Perhaps BH changed it because I put the words in the form of Polanski's "confession." Maybe he simply confessed to "having had sex with the girl," even though the admission constituted rape of a minor.
Regards, Burt Prelutsky
True, MB. And I guess it doesn't matter how many little people you run down while following your moral GPS – as long as the result is great, eternal Art.
JHM called me out for having written that Roman Polanski had sex with the child. In my original piece, I used the verb "raped." I suspect that Big Hollywood changed it because I made the mistake of claiming that Roman Polanski confessed to having raped the 13-year-old when he probably only confessed to having had sexual intercourse with her, even though that admission would, because of the victim's age, constitute a confession of rape.
Regards, Burt Prelutsky
You know, I agree with you entirely, Dylan is a terrible singer, so-so guitar player, and I some times wonder if he ever heard any one actually play a harmonica before.
But that's one of the main things I like best about him, he's one of my favorites, I've seen him about half a dozen times.
He doesn't care. He's going to do it anyway. Don't like it, don't buy a ticket. When he got booed off stage on his American tour because of his use of electric guitars, he said screw them and proceeded to get booed off stages around the world.
That's some pretty big brass ones in my opinion.
True, and I always respected him for the electric guitar thing – mostly because he was bucking the folkie trend. Don't get me wrong – I like some of Dylan's stuff. I just can't get into his old protest songs like "The Times They Are A-Changin." What a great melody, great images – and what an arrogant, antisocial piece of music. And you know what? I bet he wasn't even speaking for himself in that song. He was just describing the situation as he saw it.
But then, I hate Peter, Paul and Mary, too – so obviously there's something wrong with me.
I enjoyed M*A*S*H when I was younger (my grandpa has always liked it; he's a Korean War vet and likes the fact that someone at least produced something about that conflict, and I used to watch it with him), but as I got older, I found it increasingly difficult to stomach their statements that there were no such things as true war heroes, or that anyone who would willingly serve their country was crazy. Actually, what's funny is that both the movie and the TV show were based on a book by a doc who actually served at a MASH unit in Korea, and it is just full of anti-PC, anti-Communist references; Hawkeye and Trapper, for example, both possess .45s and talk about how they're going to use them on the "gooks." Never underestimate Hollywood's capacity to mangle a pro-America work.
Well, technically, Gore didn't win an Oscar, the director of that film did.
Your post is still valid though as Hollywood couldn't help but try to gloss this stiff as a talent.
Acting, the art of emoting or whatever can be done by children , dogs, horses, and chimps not to mention birds. The grandest of awards, the oscar has been awarded to a ten year old child, Tatum O' Neal. How hard can this be if a child can do it? Other professions require real skills and talents. Imagine a ten year old doing heart surgery, flying a jumbo jet full of passengers. Yet this inate talent that everyone has is elevated to god like dimensions. Actors are emotionally crippled indivuals that wander in the either of real life. Let's play make believe and put on a puppet show!
Dear Wanda–I used to write for "MASH," but the truth is, I was never a fan even though I was a Democrat back in those days. Although I liked about half of the eight episodes I wrote, I never understood why so many people loved the show and continue to love it to this day. I always thought it was extremely self-righteous and never particularly funny. If I were to sit down and list my all-time favorite comedy shows, it wouldn't crack the top 50. And the fact is, I haven't liked 50 sit coms.
Regards, Burt Prelutsky
Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins DID NOT name their son after Jack Henry Abbott. I could care less about what anyone thinks of their political views, but I do care about people out and out lying on these two people. Sarandon has stated on more than one ocassion that she named her son after her Jack Nicholson, whom she co-starred with in "The Witches of Eastwick." She even asked the man his permission to do so, and he granted. As for her pairing "Jack" with "Henry," as thousands of other mothers and fathers have for their sons, she has said it was all a matter of coming up with a middle name that complimented his first name. So are we all to believe that if someone espouses liberal views and their son is named Jack Henry, they named him after a convicted murderer? Come on! Hate Sarandon and Robbins all you want but leave their innocent children, grown or not, alone. And yeah, I'm fully aware that Sarandon and Robbins were in favor of Abbott being released. A lot of people — famous and not-famous — were. It was their perogative.
He won those grammy's even though they were for books he neither wrote nor was the audio released in the year he "won"
He was chosen as the face of the socialists pulling the strings years before he announced his run for the president
Gore just passed the billion dollar mark. I guess it pays.
You're a good and humble man Burt.

It's not just you Bugs. I'm with you and Ed on Dylan, and for many of the same reasons. For me it's either you get it or not, and not that the "it" is something magical or special. I realize that he isn't a good singer or virtuoso musician. He is a good songwriter though, and when I get asked how can you listen to it, I have no concrete example or reason to offer, except to just listen to the song; I just dig it, and love the way he puts his thing together. Also I hate PP&M too, even they're more palatable for most peoples ears.
A great movie too, one of my faves!
Real nice you pathetic troll. Get your head out of your arse, and get out of the basement of your mommy's house.
Hollywood is overrun with morally depraved people. That decent people can exist in that cesspool truly is a Triumph of the Will.
Hollywood has changed so much from what it was a long time ago in a bad way now it's become all about sex, beautiful women, who your dating or who your boyfriend is. We had good stars a long time ago but now we have Paris Hilton,Sean Penn, yvonne strahovski yes she is immature too not setting good examples for young people who are dating same with the other's. It's become all about who your dating this week, this month, this year who they are sleeping with, vacationing with and so on. Hollywood has changed and not for the better Hell it's not even about being a artist anymore it's about who they are with this week, year ect. The place has become a joke and it grows inmaturity. Even the new comer's are being drawn into the fantasy of i can do this without hurting me or i can do this because it make's me feel good. The truth is it affect's the culture in a often negative way
Why is it that filthy, swaggering blow-hard bullies like Norman Mailer are never willing to put their own safety on the line for the sake of "art?" Why didn't Mailer invite Jack Henry Abbott into his house when he was released from prison? They had something in common–the willingness to stab innocent people when they felt like it.
No, Mailer was many things, but he was no fool. He wasn't going to risk having a(nother) violent narcissist in the house. Better to let someone else die for art. What a piece of trash. What a perfect exemplar of so much of our so-called elite.
What happened to Cliff Robertson was awful. It remains my go to story for Hollywood, power and corruption. Reminds me of the NEA.
With just a small amount of research (which I should have done before posting) I can see now that the years don't add up. Abbott was released in June of 1981, he re-offended on July 18th of the same year and commited suicide in the year 2002. Jack Henry Robbins was born in the year of 1989. That's plenty of time for Sarandon/Robbins to have swept under the rug and completely forgotten about their most unsavory communal brainstorm, the petitioning for the release of a man all the prison officials said was not worthy of ever seeing the light of day for he was mentally ill and more than just a little violent. To refresh memory of Abbott's daily habits He fatally stabbed a 22 year old man outside the kid's dad's cafe six weeks after released form prison. The kid wouldn't allow the newly crown prince of the literary sect to use the "Employee's Only" bathroom.
I would think that the hungry for attention part comes from their Zeppelin-like (and sized) egos. And they're right about everything – never wrong, once they choose their trendy, pet causes.
Sort of like all of the progressive-socialist cultural elite that call for the closing of Guantanamo but don't want the inmates anywhere near them afterward.
Is that supposed to make us feel unimportant or ashamed or something? To gives us some perspective, put us in our places? We little people who try to live decent lives and not rape underaged girls – we'll all be forgotten someday but…nyaa, nyaa…the hard-living, hard-drinking, bohemian, freak-ass kid-raper's work will live on and be admired? What's your point, in other words.
Be careful, Burt. Those you cite may have been guilty of criminal activity, but you used the word "retard." Why should we bother with prosecuting violent and rapacious men when folks like you are being insensitive?
indeed…
I always liked that quote. The odd thing being, though, that Shaw was a ardent socialist.
he was indeed. However like most of them he wanted to keep HIS money…
He should want to keep money he earned, anyone would. Socialism works for the leftys because they count on others to do the heavy lifting. I suppose to them, the lefty/lib, sharing is an outmoded concept from kindergarten, and they haven't really evolved from that mentality.
"beautiful bone structure and a knack for playing make-believe"
Are we talking about actors or Politicans? Never mind I forgot about Waxman and Pelosi.
Facts don't need to have a point, that's why they're called facts
Whatever you feel about it is entirely up to you. Me? I'm jointly thrilled and terrified by the fact that what I manage to create will outlive whatever I AM – thrilled a the prospect of real, tactile immortality… but terrified by the responsibility and work involved. Think about it: It's not TOO difficult to be a "good man," you just have to learn to say "no" every time the opportunity to enjoy yourself comes up. But make something memorably awful and that'll be the story of you no matter how many burning buildings you run into. Michael Bay could adopt a boatful of Honduran orphans, spend his entire fortune giving them all the security, education and stability any human being could ever want for… and a century from now he'll just be the guy who's guilty of "Transformers."
good pull. Most liberalconceptsare somewhat childish in nature. Flying in face of reality,so to speak. But watching them fight each other over money- their own economic darwinism- is amusing to watch…
