Burt’s Eye View: Henry Waxman Responds
by Burt Prelutsky
A while ago, I wrote a piece titled “Blowing the Whistle on Waxman.” In case you missed it, I explained that Henry Waxman and I had been friends beginning almost 50 years ago at UCLA. I also said that we had seen each other infrequently over the intervening years once he went to Sacramento as a state assemblyman and later to Washington as a member of Congress.
Over the years, I moved politically from left to right, while Henry moved from left to far left to over the edge. Still, I had a soft spot for him and, as a result, refrained from including his name when I would list the usual suspects, those left-wingers like Pelosi, Reid, Rangel, Boxer and Murtha, who were doing their utmost to destroy America.
However, once Obama was elected and began pushing his radical agenda, while simultaneously surrounding himself with advisors who should never have been allowed within a mile of the White House, Henry began feeling his oats. Suddenly, with the Democrats in control of the House, he was no longer a back-bencher. He even got to have his name on a piece of major legislation, the Waxman-Markey Cap & Trade bill, a singular disaster that would send all of our energy costs soaring while simultaneously providing China and India with a tremendous advantage over what remains of our American industry.
That was bad enough, but even after those notorious ACORN videos aired on Glenn Beck’s TV show, Waxman and 74 of his left-wing cronies on Capitol Hill voted to continue funding ACORN, and that cut the Gordian knot for me. At that point, even old school ties weren’t enough to dissuade me, and, in a very sad frame of mind, I wrote the article.
An hour or so after it was posted, I received an email from Waxman’s office in Washington. It began: “Dear Burt, I can understand that we have disagreements about politics. I can see that you have some embarrassment about our past friendship, but you are not responsible for me and I am not (thank G-d) responsible for your views or actions. But I do resent that whatever I may have said to you in a conversation years ago is now being dredged up (and maybe made up) to make me look bad. I never thought I had to remember things I may have said to you to be provocative at the time, would be repeated and distorted, as if it were ‘on the record.’”
(Note: Just for the record, I made up nothing and I distorted nothing. What I said he said about the steroid-using baseball players he called before his committee was exactly what he said; namely that he had no idea they were even famous until he saw his fellow congressmen lining up for their autographs; and, in response to a question I posed strictly out of curiosity, replied that he had no idea how long after an athlete stopped using steroids, they would continue to show up in drug tests. Besides, neither of those statements is particularly provocative. They merely indicate how unqualified and unaware a congressman can be and still feel himself entitled to sit in judgment of other people. The other thing I addressed in the article was Henry’s boasting that he and his colleagues were going to investigate Fox for biased news reporting, and my responding that I thought it was a swell idea so long as they then did the same with the NY Times, the three major networks, CNN, MSNBC and the Washington Post. That time, I even had a totally impartial witness, my wife Yvonne.)
Responding to his first paragraph, I wrote: “Dear Henry, I don’t blame you in the least for being angry. But you can imagine how I felt when I saw your name included with the other 74 Democrats who voted to continue funding an organization as corrupt and vile as ACORN. For the life of me, I could not think of a single reason why you would wish to align yourself, even for partisan political reasons, with a group that has not only been guilty of election fraud, but, as those now famous videos made clear, have no objection to assisting a pimp to set up a brothel. And not just any brothel, but one employing abducted 13-year-old girls from Latin America. Also, I did send you a note some months ago wishing you a speedy recovery when I heard that you had been rushed off to the hospital, so even though you never acknowledged it, it would suggest I’m not entirely heartless.”
Waxman’s email went on: “As I recall our poker friendship, you used to keep a card with every cent I ever lost to you to be sure you were paid. When you sent out a letter pleading for your friends to help you out at a difficult financial time in your life, you promised that you would repay every cent. I sent you $100. I never asked you for the money, nor have you offered to repay it. I did not want to embarrass you then or now. But since you have no hesitation to try to publicly hold me up to scorn, I see no reason not to ask you to repay your debt to me. I would like to use that money to donate to the ACLU or some other group that will defend your rights, along with everyone else, to free speech and other Constitutional protections. Sincerely, Henry Waxman.”
To this, I replied, “The card you mention was not for poker losses. Those were always minimal because none of us had any money, and were invariably paid off at the end of the game. The card was to keep track of the money I loaned you, and which you took an extremely long time to repay. It was to help you continue playing blackjack during one of our occasional trips to Tahoe or Vegas. I am truly sorry, though, that I did not pay back the $100. That was an oversight because in moving from one rental to another, as circumstances forced us to do several times once Hollywood ageism made me unemployable, I lost the IOU list. When, some years later, I was finally able to earn some money, I did pay back those whose names I remembered and those who subsequently reminded me. I regret that I forgot your generosity. I will have the check in the mail to you this afternoon. You are free, of course, to donate it to the ACLU, to ACORN or even to help pay for Nancy Pelosi’s next facelift. It’s your money, after all, unlike the money that Waxman-Markey will cost American taxpayers and American businesses. Regards, Burt.”)
Do I regret that Henry Waxman is one of 250-odd Democrats who are only too happy to rubberstamp every piece of legislative lunacy concocted by Obama, Axelrod, Emanuel, Jarrett, Holdren, Jennings, Sunstein and Jeff Jones? Of course. Do I regret that Henry Waxman has so totally lost his moral compass that even when 172 of his fellow liberals voted to stop funding ACORN, he stood steadfast with the sleazebags? You bet.
Worst of all, he probably sees it as being politically courageous. On the other hand, normal human beings, who haven’t spent most of their adult lives feeding at the public trough, recognize it as aiding and abetting.

Right on target as usual, Burt. How can this anti-American character Waxman look himself in the mirror?
Thanks, Burt. The insight you gave on Waxman was astounding , but not surprising considering ol' Henry is an egotistical idiot with a bad case of libtard disfunctional attention disorder.
Burt, tell us, was Waxman as repugnent to look at while at UCLA as he is now? That said, I basically don't care how guys look, but please – we have to see up this guy's nostrils.
Like the scorpion in the fable, to sting you is his nature.
It's always a bit painful to have a rift with a friend, but this goes to show you how important these political issues are. The current White House gang is too far left to be able to see things as they are. I would say the same thing about a far right White House. (I do not think Bush was far right!).
The things that the White House are doing will affect us in a major way forever.
Holy Shit! Thank you for your spot-on comments. Jay
Burt, you rock! This is a very courageous piece that you have written. I wish more people would expose the petty tendencies of our "free thinking" liberal members of Congress.

Hes our current rep in agoura, whos going to unseat waxman? The country can't stand much more of him in washington!
Great read Burt….Thank you!
And the lesson is: Watch the things you say or do as those things may come back to haunt you one day! Thank you for remember how the story really went b/c Kool Aid sippers are known to distort the truth.
It sounds like your old buddy Henry, is a bit touchy. Perhaps he’s beginning to feel the warmth of the torches, and the sharp prong of the pitchforks. Keep your hundred bucks Burt, you’ll need it to pay Henry and Barry’s parasitic taxes until 2010.

All I can say, and I say this with the upmost sincerity and sympathy for your plight, is that Mr. Waxman looks like a bat. Honestly, you can see his brain through his nostrils. And he could fly away with those ears. Come to think of it, many of us wish he would do just that right off the top of Mt. Everest. Socialist bastard.
Jamesb: Several people who know that I've known Henry since college days have asked me if he was always ugly. I'm always tempted to say you should have seen him before the operation. The fact is, a mutual friend introduced the two of us at UCLA. A few days later, the friend asked me what I thought of Waxman. I said I thought he was bright and had a nice self-deprecating sense of humor. The friend then asked me if I didn't think Henry was the ugliest person I had ever seen. For the life of me, I couldn't imagine what he was talking about. Women's looks I noticed, but I never gave a second thought to what guys looked like. But, having had the seed planted, I took a good look the next time I ran into Henry. I could barely believe my eyes. And this was before Henry grew the mustache. Was I going blind? How could I not notice those nostrils? It occurred to me that if anyone ever bothered to lay tracks, a locomotive could have disappeared into one of those tunnels.

This sounds sadly familiar.
Growing up a liberal Jew in LA, I found myself shunned by many of my family and a number of friends when I returned from a war almost 40 years ago, and again when my politics evolved in the starboard direction. I never understood it, but have learned to accept it.
True friends are despite; not because.
WOW! Henry Waxman is actually my "representative" (meaning that I happen to live in his district) and I have sent him DOZENS of letters, emails and faxes over the years and NEVER received a reply.
I was beginning to think he was a robot or an alien or something.
Burt, you've gotta have some serious mojo to get a response out of this individual. I salute you.
Waxman–and, not to leave out all the other ones all over the country since there are so many many other misguided Jewish Democrat liberals who are such disappointments (and such hypocrites!)–ought to read Norman Podrhoretz's Why Are Jews LIberal? (Doubleday 2009). Burt, your columns are always a pleasure. Wit and Wisdom. Thank you.
I think waxwoman is also directly responsible for ensuring that congress is exempt from the democrat health care false promise. From his self imposed superiority wrt steroid use it is no wonder that he feels too important to be subject to the crappy democrat health care fraud. The democrat aristocrats must go in 2010 / 2012.
well, politics and D.C. is Hollywood for the ugly.
hmmm perhaps I should run for congress; I've been known to frighten rottweilers.
You should've sent the $100 to the United States Marines in Waxman's name. It is, after all, a "group that will defend your rights, along with everyone else, to free speech and other Constitutional protections."
I absolutely love Burt! This is great! I got a great letter from Joe Wilson today for my small contribution after his "You lie". (organic I'm sure–but I appreciated it) I have decided I am only donating to the ones who show me they are conservative. I will indeed vote against the rest.
Thanks for the excellent write-up, kind sir.
I'm sorry you had to bear all this BS, but you did it with aplomb and dignity.
I'm always tempted to say you should have seen him before the operation.
Burt, that's the funniest line I think I've seen here. And, I do believe your old friend's looks aren't that relevant to you, it is the metamorphosis of his inner being.
Thanks for the article.
I know what you mean, Waxman's nostrils are revolting!!!
Yanks just went up two runs. Top of the 8th, now Mo on the mound….GO BOMBERS!!!!
Damn Burt, we're going to have to start calling you the bus driver because you just took Waxman to school.
How about cocker spaniels?
Burt, perhaps Henry Waxman proves the old adage to have, "a face only a mother could love."
Anyhow I read somewhere, maybe heaven forbid, Rolling Stone, that after the republican revolution in '94 some members of one of the commitees allowed smoking in one of their meeting rooms and had pictures of Waxman on the bottom of their ashtrays.
From what you describe of your esteemed member of the US congress, Mr. Waxman in terms of sports knowledge, is the real life example of Niles & Frazier Crane.
Peace Burt, thanks for another enjoyable and enlightening column!
There was a locomotive and it was pulling the crazy train. Nancy Pelosi looked at Waxman once. In her only act of kindness she blames the result on overeager BoTox technicians.
Ditto, Burt. Henry Waxman may have once been worthy of your friendship. No longer. He's a hypocrite of the worst sort. I wouldn't walk across the street to urinate on him if he were on fire!
What a petty, little ugly man.
The last time Nancy Pelodi's proctologist told her to bend over and spread 'em, there was old Henry Waxman staring him right in the eye pharting out, 'Eh, what's up, doc?'
Narcissis in Greek legend looked in the water and saw his reflection. Waxman does see his reflection when sitting and gazing in to the waters of his Poreclain Honda. Waxman is in love with what he sees.
Burt,
You are a GREAT writer but an even better person, I suspect. It takes true courage to reveal personal details in public that aren't entirely flattering. Even more steel is required to write without a trace of self-pity. Thank you for demonstrating both.
I laughed out loud about the "poker tally." He meant for the anecdote to reflect badly on you; what he did was show his hand. This is a person seeking to publicly humiliate a former friend, mostly to elevate himself by tearing another down. He also clearly believes he is entitled to other people's money.
Also, interesting that he would send you a hundred bucks out of his own pocket, but will freely purloin millions from other people's pockets in order to distribute it to the "needy." What a sad sick self-righteous man. The complete Pharisee.
I can't think of a more revealing look at the thieves pervading Congress. Thank you for your bravery and your terrific talent with words. Keep going!
Sibella Giorello
Excellent stuff, Burt, and Ari David in 2010!!!
I think all his brains fell out those gargantuan nose holes.
Maybe you should think seriously about starting a campaign to GET HIM OUT of office in your district!!! He and most of the garbage in Washington NEED TO BE VOTED OUT NOW!!!
Waxman is just as stupid as Nanny Pelosi. Dumb meet dumber. A union made in HELL!

Yuk Steve.
I can understand why Waxman might feel a sense of betrayal having past provocations tossed around in the media. This only emphasizes what is wrong with the DNC/RNC cesspool that functions as Congress. I would be an outstanding legislator but a horrible politician. Waxman is a horrible legislator.
Now although I understand why Waxman feels betrayed his premise lacks fundamentals. When did transparency become only a "promise" rather than a duty. This POTUS promised "transparency" as if it were the cherry on the sundae. What Waxman believes should be transparent. And apparently what he believes is what he is told to believe or what he is paid by lobbyists to believe. Shame shame shame.
If you had Henry Waxman's face, would you look at yourself in the mirror?
Note: Yes, I'm ashamed of myself for such a juvenile statement.
Why is there a dichotomy between what the Representative would say in casual conversation with a friend and public statements he would make "on the record"? I can understand not being able to recall the substance of a conversation, but that is different from saying you should not be held accountable for it. This is one of the problems with these people. They don't realize that anything they say is a reflection on them. As long as the Waxmans of the world demand that they only be held accountable for their "on the record" statements, we will have no confidence in the integrity of our lawmakers.
Memo to Henry: Political expediency is out these days. Well-grounded principles are in.
I was in a long-term relationship with a guy I would not say was very attractive. In fact, he had a Waxmanesque nose. But he was intelligent, and funny, and nice enough. We broke up only after it became clear he would never be interested in marriage.
A woman can look past a man's physical ugliness, but if he has any in his character or his soul, a woman cannot abide that.
Waxman is an interesting case study. He took offense to what Burt wrote about a "personal" conversation about a public issue and compared it to a personal conversation/event about a personal issue..kinda apples to oranges. However, while one only has to look at Waxman to see he's not a ladies man (as Burt in poor taste stated previously), it is puerile to bring it up .Surely no one more than he is aware of his appearance and it certainly isn't like he asked to look the way he does nor can he do anything to change it. Why would anyone change themselves because some classless low-lifes viciously mock?
Psychologically speaking however, it could explain why he stands up for those corrupt organization like ACORN, he sees it as standing up for the under dog which he no doubt viewed/views himself as. His lack of knowledge of sports stars suggests he shied away from that kind of thing probably because he wasn’t gifted athletically and didn’t want to face the cruelty he knew would come from other “beautiful” athletes.
PART II–comment limiter wouldn't let me get it all in on one..
With other leftist causes, well the man is a statist and that’s what statists do. We have to fight the good fight, hit them hard and without mercy for their attempt at stealing freedom and liberty, but leave the childish comments to the leftists…it is after all, all they have and it diminishes our points.. I like Burt and his love for liberty, and certainly Waxman is an enemy, so let’s stay focused on the brass ring and not get bogged down with irrelevancies about appearances.
no, they're not afraid of me. Spaniels just want to get romantic with my pant legs.
nice game by A.J. Burnett. I hafta admit I was a bit skeptical based on his the last outing v. the Angles but he was money, if Pettite is on and the bats get going – watch out!
A great hero you are. Reporting old conversations you had w/ a friend. Awesome. You are a great journalist. Someone give this man a Pulitzer!
Burt, Great article. Too bad that freindship and politics no longer can mix and match. It is a sad note when old pals are driven apart by partison rancor.
Anyway, I never could stand that guy, since I lived in LA area and he represented me, what one million or so years ago now? Such is the right of ascention that is afford those in Congress.
Anyway, keep up the good work.
BTW: I think I also sent you some money at some point too, It was, yeah, one hund….no, one Thousand dollars, yeah, that's the ticket. Send that on over to me and I'll be sure it stays out of left-wing hands.
Burt…speaking of, that mustache Waxman sports is tragically unfortunate. It reminds me of the lip sweater NBA commisioner David Stern once grew. Just awful.
Thank God he, AJ, did pitch a great game. It couldn't happen at a more opportune time. I was worried. Pedro pitched a gem as well. I feel that the Yanks are back in it, and hearing today that Cliff Lee is not going to pitch on 3 days rest limiting him to just two games, buoyed my spirits. I think Manual may be making a tactical error here, one similar to what Casey Stengal made in the '60 WS loss to the Pirates.
Burt – great stuff. Keep it up.
Is it just me …everytime I see Waxman I think of Lon Chaney Sr. in "Phantom of the Opera"
Waxman is an prime example of those who believe themselves to be above criticism once they get entrenched inside the DC establishment. His prickly response to your column was to be expected. As will your IRS audit next year. This breed of politician uses their public office to enrich themselves and exact revenge on their enemies (both real and imagined) at every opportunity.
I once had the misfortune of living in Pete Stark's district. He represents a large portion of the East Bay from Oakland to Milpitas in California (or as Alec Baldwin's character called it last night on 30 Rock… the People's Gay Republic of Drugifornia). This 18-term congressman has been known to personally leave obscenity laced tirades on constituents' voicemails after they had the temerity to call his office and complain about his votes. He and Waxman are prime examples of the sort of congressmen that the rest of America should know about. They live in safe, hard left districts and have seats for life. Behind the scenes, they do alot of damage to this country. But very little media spotlight is ever focused on them and most of America has no idea just how awful they are as congressmen and as people.

Ya I saw that about Lee, man he was great the other night. C.C. wants the ball on three days rest, but I don't know who might be a better choice as a forth starter. Jaba? Obviously tonight is HUGE! It's a great series. My elderly Mom has been GLUDED to the T.V.!
My equally elderly Dad (a band guy, never an athlete) is perplexed why. Of course my Mom told me as a little kid in Japan in the 60's to just wait, we have our own football team back in Texas, in Dallas.
does anyone know an actual email/website to send messages to waxman? I went on his website and found it impossible to send this scum a message. he's a joke. this guy represents my community….poorly.
