Burt’s Eye View: Have You No Shame, Leftists?
by Burt PrelutskyBack in 1954, a lawyer named Joseph Welch became famous virtually overnight when he looked contemptuously at Joe McCarthy and said, “Have you no decency, sir, at long last?” As clumsy as the line was, he said it so effectively that the next thing we knew, Otto Preminger had hired him to play a judge and deliver equally sanctimonious lines in “Anatomy of a Murder.”

The question of decency runs through my head every time I see or hear a celebrity or a politician these days. For instance, I keep asking myself if I am more disgusted by what Roman Polanski did some 30-odd years ago or what his legion of defenders are presently saying in his defense. Just because he directed a couple of good movies and a lot of lousy ones, we have most of Hollywood signing petitions on his behalf. Whoopi Goldberg, who was apparently paying close attention when Bill Clinton was parsing the word “is,” has gone so far as insisting that what Polanski did to the 13-year-old girl wasn’t really rape. The problem with calling these Hollywood freaks on the carpet is that the more repulsed that normal human beings are with them, the more convinced they are that they’re as sophisticated, not to mention morally superior, as their press releases claim they are.
Some time ago, I suggested that when John Huston’s degenerate character, Noah Cross, dragged his young granddaughter off into the night at the end of “Chinatown,” Roman Polanski was the only person in the world who actually believed he had directed a movie with a happy ending. Now, thanks to the 150 show-biz celebrities who have signed a petition demanding that the child-rapist go free, I see how terribly naïve I was.
Or consider Jimmy Carter, who has spent the past three decades cozying up to the likes of Yasser Arafat and working overtime to prove that people who call him America’s biggest anti-Semite aren’t just whistling “Dixie.”
But, not content with merely condemning Israel’s Jews, he branched out a while ago and condemned Southern Baptists for oppressing their womenfolk, going so far as to turn his back on the church he has belonged to for his entire life. No word yet whether Mr. Peanut plans to join up with the Sunnis or the Shi’a.
Then we have an ex-vice president, Al Gore, who has spent the past several years getting rich in a way that would have had Charles Ponzi gnashing his teeth in envy. First, Gore announced that the earth was heating up and that people in Kansas would soon be up to their knees in the Pacific Ocean. Then, when Mother Nature pulled a fast one and cooled things down slightly, as is her wont, Gore didn’t miss a beat. Instead, he said we were undergoing climate change. People didn’t know what that meant, but Gore, in those ominous tones he has mastered, said it was every bit as bad as global warming and, so, the money just kept rolling in.
Well, far be it from me to miss out on a good thing. So it was that I, too, began paying close attention to the weather. After all, it was obviously a growth industry. What I found to my horror was that things were far scarier than Mr. Gore, at his spookiest, had suggested. For instance, even here in Los Angeles, where we generally take weather for granted, I noticed that between January and July, the median temperature rose from 63 to 93, an average increase of five degrees a month. The increase was so gradual that, like the frog in the pot of boiling water, I’m not sure I would have even noticed if I hadn’t been paying such close attention. Now, it’s not my wish to panic anyone, but if the trend continues at that rate, by the end of 2010, the average temperature will be close to…180 degrees!
In order to do further study, I’m hoping to obtain a federal grant so that I can get a really good thermometer and several notebooks and pencils. I believe I can handle the entire job for about $10 million.
While we’re on the subject of numbers, and while I’m waiting for my $10 million piece of the stimulus package, I recently checked out the ages at which our 43 presidents were first elected. (Note: Even though Barack Obama is the 44th president, he’s only the 43rd individual to hold the office. The problem is that one man, Grover Cleveland, a born troublemaker, was both the 22nd and the 24th president, having been elected in 1884 and then again in 1892.)
In any case, as I was saying, I discovered that 26 of our presidents were elected in their 50s, while nine of them were first elected in their 60s. Some of those 35 men were fine, and included the likes of Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe and Lincoln; while others, such as Wilson, Harding, Hoover, FDR, LBJ, Nixon and Carter, left a good deal to be desired.
What I found most telling was that the half dozen men who were initially elected in their 40s (Pierce, Cleveland, Teddy Roosevelt, JFK, Clinton and Obama) don’t make a very impressive case for youth. On the other hand, the only one who was elected in his 70s was Ronald Reagan. Now I’m not saying I’m another Reagan, but I will be in my 70s by the time 2012 rolls around and, assuming I’ve completed my weather study by then and have somehow avoided being burned to a crisp, I would consider it an honor and a privilege to run against that young whippersnapper, Barack Obama.
In addition to my age, two other things I’d have going for me are, one, I didn’t attend an Ivy League school and, perhaps best of all, I’ve never been a lawyer.
Finally, I fully expect that any day now Robert Gibbs will announce that Rio de Janeiro has been named Chicago’s sister city and, so, thanks to the efforts of Barack, and the sacrifices of Michelle and Oprah, Chicago will, in a sense, be co-hosting the 2016 Olympics.
And in other totally unrelated news, Gibbs will inform the media that President Obama has declared war on Denmark.

Hey Burt, back off the weather study. I started my study two months before yours and I only need 8.5 million dollars.
There are other studies. For example, in June, it stayed light out well past 9 pm in Wisconsin. Now, it's getting dark by 6:30. By this time next year, we'll have no sunlight at all. Someone must investigate!
Shame is dead. Outrage is dead. Common sense is dead. The lefties killed them. It took four decades of slow cultural poison (and an easily distracted citizenry) to do it, but they did it.
But we can bring them back!
"He directed a couple of good movies and a lot of lousy ones."
Okay, as much as I agree with the moral side of this article… I am going to have to disagree with that statement. Polanski as a person might be a criminal, a rapist, a disgusting individual, etc… but that is no reason to dismiss his outstanding cinematography as "a couple of good movies and a lot of lousy ones."
I don't think Polanski ever actually made a lousy movie. Even his misfires (mostly his light hearted or comedy films like Pirates and The Fearless Vampire Killers) are interesting to watch. All of the following are worth watching:
Knife in the Water
Repulsion
Cul-de-Sac
Rosemary's Baby
Chinatown
The Tenant
Tess
Frantic
Bitter Moon
Death and the Maiden
The Pianist
"he branched out a while ago and condemned Southern Baptists for oppressing their womenfolk"
Huh, so glad Carter is here to tell me how oppressed I am… even though as a person that is a member of a S. Baptist church (and have been since before I was a teen) I can most assuredly say that I am not…
And Al Gore is just an idiot, my lord he thinks ecology is a /real/ science… though it's just as much of a a science as Political Science… He is the laughing stock of the Met community (and quite a few of them do 'believe' (well as much as you can believe in a theory) in Global Warming…
Lately I've been poking through the local weather records for my part of coastal NSW. I assume that's part of the "globe". What I've discovered is that nearly all monthly heat records were set between 1910 and 1920. The exception is August, which had its record heat in 1946.
The worst drought months were all recorded before the sixties – every single one! – and most before the forties.
Consulting these records was, needless to say, a fantastically complex procedure, so I'm not being critical of minor groups like the IPCC for not being able to locate such info.

I'm glad to hear you comment on this, Burt. I'm the same age as Pres. Obama, I'm pretty well educated, I've gained some experience in my field, but I'm still what my grandfather would call "wet behind the ears". It speaks a great deal to the hubris and ego of these young politicians that they have no qualms aspiring to positions they are likely inadequately prepared for.
No investigation necessary. We are all doomed. But for 100 million you can buy night vision credits from the new company I'm building in Alligator, Mississippi.
"Everyone in this room knows what will happen if we do nothing, Our deficit will grow.,,And more will die as a result."
– Barack Hussein Obama, on passing his Health care reform.
What is really more outrageous than that statement? When one thinks about it, has any politician said anything more despicable than this? The American Health Care system is completely functional in everyway, and the overwhelming majority of people know it. Does it have problems, sure. Could it be made better, perhaps.
But for a President ot the United States to make this phony ignorant claim to try to scare people is the new low in American Political history. These lying communists scumbags need to be stopped.
Short answer: No.
Wow! He's going to be able to stop death and deficits now–that's even more impressive than having the oceans recede and the planet heal.
I have a premonition of darkness, followed by more darkness, with scattered light by morning. Just a hunch.
But I will say, the local radio news is predicting snow this weekend in upstate NY, just over the PA boarder. The earliest I remember it snowing in the past was much closer tot he end of November, because that's when my birthday is, and I used to pray for no snow till after my birthday. And I usually got it.
I blame global warming.
Even though I disagree with you about the quality of his movies, you do get a thumbs up from me for having a polite, reasonable, thoughtful, disagreement with the author.
One thing I do like about these conservative leaning web sites, is it is possible to disagree with out calling your debate partner the worse insults you can think of.
My sister practically wrestled me to the ground and forced me to read the autobiography of the former queen of Jordan, Noor.
To cut to the chase, she blames Carter for the mess the Middle East is today. Before Camp David accords, the surrounding Arab states agreed, at least in theory, to negotiate with Israel, as a solid block. She said, though they weren't happy with the situation, they felt they could come to at least some sort of agreement.
Then Carter went behind all their backs and negotiated a separate deal with Egypt, breaking the Arab unity. And by negotiate I mean pay them billions of our tax dollars every year not to kill each other out right.
She firmly believes, Camp David killed peace, because afterwords none of the Arab leaders really trusted each other on the issue of negotiating with Israel.
I think Carter finally realized his mistake, and has been doing every thing he can think of to remedy the situation, and by that I mean, he thinks he has to vilify Israel to try and earn their respect back. Or some sort of twisted reasoning that he considers justifies his current actions.

this is the first time in my life that i've been older than the president. in and of itself, that doesn't bother me, but the fact that i'm infinitely more qualified for the job does…
At least Hollywood is full of actors who are supposed to be able to fool us. It's too bad our politicians these days are also consummate actors and their fooling us leads to much worse things than good or bad movies. Gore and Ponzi, birds of a feather. Unfortunately for all of us shame is going the way of the dodo.
You hit the nail on the head: Blame! It's what the left thrives on–blame global warming for weather; blame mankind, particularly the U.S.A. for global warming; blame Republicans for thwarting their agenda; and blame George W. Bush for EVERYTHING! And once you blame, then you can demand apologies.
There is no shame. No activity that cannot be explained away by some sort of non-sense. The reasons and the consequences are too many and too complex to discuss here. These are just symptoms of the real malady we are all facing. We have not only no longer use the moral compass to find our way but we have thrown away the compass. How we get that compass back is the real question. It will not be solved politically or culturally through our mass media of Movies and TV. These are really just reflections of what already exists, even though they are one sided (leftists). I wish I were smart and wise enough to offer a solution but to not see that we live in this forrest and are only worried about certain trees is to not really address the problem.

I don't think it's so they can demand apologies. They have much bigger plans than that.
It's so they can work to destroy the fundamental institutions and creeds that made America the greatest society humanity has ever produced, and not feel guilty about it.
I'm not talking out right revolution, they tried that in the '60's and '70's. Didn't work out so well. But rather, infect those institutions, and destroy them from the inside out, just like termites.
Global warming hoax is a blanket cause that all kinds of human vermin gather under. The zero population movement, the eco wackos, the socialists, the communists, they can all agree on one thing: what ever their bitch is, America is to blame. Destroy it, and Utopia will follow.
The reason the left hates America is because we prove, beyond any shadow of a doubt, beyond question, we are right and they are wrong. That's why it eats at them. Guaranteed 100% proof, they are wrong and we are right. And they just simply hate that.
Hey, global warming could cause global cooling, possibly. Just ask "The Day After Tomorrow," which as we all know got the science exactly right.
According to most statistics (72% of which are made up on the spot, but this one wasn't), the warmest year for the U.S. overall during the period in which records have been kept was 1936. Even the warmest periods of the '90s and '00s at best approximated those levels.
Yes, but does that mean global warming, causing global cooling, causing global warming, is really causing global cooling? Or is that, actually causing global warming?
If only Maxwell Smart were here to figure this out for us.
Missed it by that much!
Just for the record, I have seen eight of the eleven movies on Francisco's list and I will stand by my judgment that Polanski directed a couple of good movies and a lot of lousy ones. But I will also second EdSki's observation that it's a joy to write for a site where people can disagree without being disagreeable.
Regards, Burt
I have lived in Norfolk for a little of two years and I did some research, without federal aid, into climate patterns here. I noticed that record lows/highs, snowfall, rainfall, etc. were all over the darn place. It is like the weather is uncontrollable here. Anybody else having a problem controlling the weather in their area?
Don't start dissing Teddy Roosevelt! He'll come back from the dead and hit you!
How refreshing to read such a measured, informed, and reasoned discussion. America used to be a melting pot, now it's just a chamber pot of toxic ideas and endless social conflicts. As a culture we have morphed into elevating the lowest common denominator while suppressing the best through class warfare and emotional appeals. We need to celebrate and encourage success rather than vilify it. It appears though that our current POTUS is lacking in almost every regard. The emperor has no clothes, and very few have yet noticed. Thank goodness we still have the power of the voting booth.
I do believe that TR is the exception to the '40's rule' about Presidents. We can only wish that the current 40-something in the White House had half of the guts, class and integrity of Teddy Roosevelt.
Geez, Burt was there supposed to be a point in that rant, or did you just forget to take your aricept today.
Just plenty of pithy comments, observations from an enlightened man. If that's a bit too difficult to absorb, then move on to The Cartoon Network. I just read that Ted Turner has some improved programming ideas for them….Talk about a guy who needs to find another job!
I have absolutely no control over the weather here in the Pacific Northwest, and it IS vexing to say the least!! Are you in Norfolk VA?
It seems that everything Jimmuh did was, and in most cases still is disturbing.
It seems that everything Jimmuh did was, and in most cases still is, disturbing.
I guess Burt and EdSki spoke too soon.
We can't seem to control the sun, moon or weather here in Pennsylvania. It's giving us fits. One day it's raining and cold and the next………………it's warm!
Don't let one bad apple spoil our conversations.
Believe me, apologies won't satisfy this crowd. Al Gore said, and I paraphrase in the words of the inimitable Geo. Harrison:
But it's gonna take money,
A whole lotta spending money
It's gonna take plenty of money
To do it right, child.
It no longer satisfies the left to redistribute America's wealth to other Americans. Oh, no, we have to pay our "climate justice" debt to the rest of the world. I despise these people. I can't state that strongly enough. I ABSOLUTELY DESPISE THESE PEOPLE!!!
Right on, EdSki!
Good job presenting another point of view, Francisco. I can learn from your methods.
When anyone mentions Norfolk, I fondly recall my days at the Norfolk Christian Academy, regrettably now defunct. I'll never forget those cheerleaders, and one particularly stirring cheer they cheered:
WE DON'T DRINK
WE DON'T SMOKE
NORFOLK, NORFOLK!!!
I thought Polanski was a director not a cinematographer.
I've see only two of his movies, Chinatown and The Pianist. They were great but he's still a pedo who belongs in jail. Maybe he'll make a movie about prison life starring Bernie Madoff.
Funny,… but the thought came to me, also, just last week that our politicians of the left have become more McCarthyite than McCarthy, but will never admit it. (moral superiority, you know.) Think: Ted Kennedy re: Robert Bork and Clarence Thomas; Reid; Pelosi; Leahy; Rangel; Dodd; Obama himself re: almost anything. They exhibit no shame or decency while decrying legitimate political opposition as hate-filled and racist. No lie seems too big and no accusation too improbable in order to further their 'progressive' utopia. Let's not hold our breathe or waste our shock waiting for that to change.
Let me add… at least Joe McCarthy was right in that communists really were trying to take over Hollywood.
Burt – you got my vote.
I thought Outrage was that new documentary in which the filmmaker outs closeted gay politicians?
Still not sure why this acceptable, but…
As they say, the road to hell is paved with good intentions.
This is exactly why the left is so hard to defeat. They are absolutely 100% convinced they are right, and what they want is good for society.
That's where the animosity, insults, hatred and arrogance stem from. They really think what they're doing is going to work. So any one who opposes them – in their minds – hates people, and want the poor to suffer.
I'm not kidding, they actually believe that.
Affirmative.
I meant say "filmography", not "cinematography", my bad. But his films do have amazing cinematography by other people though, especially Tess.
That the left was willing to make up stories about Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh to bring them down suggests that they, in fact, have no shame. Nor do they have class or character. That, after 9/11, Michael Walzer found himself asking, Can There Be a Decent Left? suggests that they are lacking in the decency department. too. Of course the evidence for this is obvious. All one needs to look at is what happens when the left gets into power. At the very least, they quickly dismantle democracy in favor of rule by an elite (note how undemocratic the European Union is) and, at worst, they engage in widespread murder of their enemies as seen in the French Revolution and elsewhere. Scratch a leftist, find a thug.
The fundamental problem is discussed in the closing paragraph of Jason Muravchik's book Heaven on Earth: The Rise and Fall of Socialism:
"By no means all socialists were killers or amoral. Many were sincere humanitarians; mostly these were the adherents of democratic socialism. But democratic socialism turned out to be a contradiction in terms, for where socialists proceeded democratically, the found themselves on a trajectory that took them further and further from socialism. Long before Lenin, socialist thinkers had anticipated the problem. The imaginary utopias of Plato, Moore, Campanella and Edward Bellamy, whose 1887 novel, Looking Backward, was the most popular socialist book in American history, all relied on coercion, as did the plans of The Conspiracy of Equals. Only once did democratic socialists manage to create socialism. That was the kibbutz. And after they had experienced it, they chose democratically to abolish it."
Socialism and the equality of results that the left so dearly cherishes requires coercion. This is why the left has no use for democracy and prefers to achieve their agenda through deception, courts, and bureaucrats instead of the consent of the governed (hmmmm, now where does that phrase come from?). Once the coercive mechanisms they know are necessary are institutionalized, they either get abused by those taking increasingly drastic measures to achieve the unattainable (e.g., Maximilien Robespierre), get taken over by a far more malicious set of rulers (e.g., Stalin), or fall into the hands of a madman (e.g., Pol Pot).
Never mind, then.
People why can't you see that your bloodpressure is reaching the sky ?
Can you mention ONE PERSON who can remember by detail what their life looked like back in
March of 1977 ?
His or her memories will be a blur , so what can happen in the courtroom at the end of this year ?
The judge will have to say CASE DISMISSED , because the people who have to testify against Roman
Polanski can't speak THE TRUTH , THE WHOLE TRUTH and NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH – because
they have no clear memories and the victim IS AGAINST ALL OF THIS.
She wants rest for both Roman Polanski and herself.
If you go to your psychiatrist with your boring complaints about the Polanski-case your shrink will probably
commit suicide.
