Taking Sides In The Middle East
by Burt PrelutskyJust for the record, I am a non-observant Jew. That means that my mother’s father, Max Lashevsky, who kept kosher and attended an orthodox synagogue twice-a-day every day of his life, would probably have considered me a heathen, while Adolf Hitler would have had me exterminated.
I want that to be perfectly clear so that when I declare my concern for Israel, nobody will simply assume it’s because I’m Jewish. I am on the side of Israel because it’s a western democracy, an ally of America, and because I regard her enemies to be our enemies, people dedicated to our mutual annihilation.
Israel’s foes believe in targeting women and children just so long as they’re Jewish or Christian. They are not only intolerant of the freedoms we take for granted — speech and religion — but they are polygamous, treat their women as chattel and encourage their children to achieve martyrdom as suicide bombers. Moreover, so-called honor killings are part of what passes for their culture.
In order to realize what a paternalistic society they have, you need only look at a photo of an Arab mob carting a corpse through the streets of Gaza; even when it’s the corpse of a child, I challenge you to find a woman anywhere in sight. So far as the Arabs are concerned, the mother, grandmother, aunts and sisters, are of absolutely no consequence, unless, of course, they can be persuaded to strap several sticks of dynamite to themselves and pay a visit to an Israeli pizza parlor.
Yet here in America and even more so in Europe, you will find millions of presumably civilized people, particularly in Hollywood and on our left-wing college campuses, who theoretically find a moral equivalence between Israel and her sworn enemies — while actually favoring the Islamics.
In a recent Rasmussen Poll, 62% of Republicans in America sided with Israel, while a mere 31% of Democrats favored the Israelis in their life-and-death conflict.
As you may have noticed, the world’s media rarely if ever remarked about the thousands of missiles Hamas fired into Israel over the past few years. However, once Israel finally got around to announcing that enough was enough, and went on the offensive, Condoleezza Rice and the European Union didn’t waste a second before crying “Foul!” and throwing a penalty flag. Going them one better, the present administration has earmarked nearly a billion dollars for Hamas, while they distract us over the $165 million in AIG bonuses.
This same pattern is followed each and every time that Israel responds to unprovoked attacks. You can invariably count on the nations of the world agreeing that Israel is out of line. While it’s nice they can agree on something, it’s a shame that “something” never seems to be Islamic terrorism, Arab barbarism or slavery and black genocide in modern-day Africa.
Can you imagine anyone in his right mind 68 years ago claiming that America was over-reacting to Pearl Harbor? Would anybody but an idiot have suggested that once America had sunk an equal number of Japanese battleships or killed an equal number of Japanese soldiers and sailors that we should have ceased hostilities and turned things over to European diplomats, especially after seeing how well those fellows had kept Hitler and Mussolini in check?
The fact is, only Arabs would continue referring to the folks in Gaza as refugees. The only reason that there were any Arab refugees back in 1948 was because Egypt, Jordan and Syria, promised to exterminate the Jews and divide the spoils, not because Israel had exiled its Arab population. Once Israel fought off the invaders, no Arab nation would open its doors to the refugees, and to this day no Arab nation ever has.
But that was 61 years ago! Who ever heard of people being refugees for six decades? How can people who have never lived in Israel, whose fathers and mothers never lived in Israel, continue to lay claim to a place where they’ve never set foot — and which, according to Arab textbooks, doesn’t even exist? They might as well insist they have a claim to Oz, Atlantis or Brigadoon.
For those who would claim that the Jews weren’t entitled to their own state, the truth is that most of the land that is now Israel was purchased from Arabs, at exorbitant prices, over several decades by Zionists who began settling there in the 19th century.
Frankly, I marvel at Israel’s spiritual fortitude, at her reluctance to seek Biblical retribution. Even one missile would be enough to get me riled up. To absorb 10,000 missile attacks strikes me as verging on the masochistic. I honestly think Israel continues to be far too concerned with world opinion. After 61 years of hearing one’s enemies parroting Hitler’s plans for the final solution, collateral damage would be the least of my concerns.
I understand that civilized societies are expected to worry about the deaths of women and children. But in civilized societies, parents don’t raise their youngsters to be suicide bombers, they don’t elect their leaders from the ranks of a terrorist group and they certainly wouldn’t dance in the street when 3,000 innocent Americans were incinerated on 9/11.

Amen, Burt!
As a church-going Catholic, I pray for Israel and the safety of its people everyday.
America wouldn't recognize a friend if it bit us on our ass !
God help us and Israel…..
Those who hate me without reason
outnumber the hairs of my head;
many are my enemies without cause,
those who seek to destroy me.
I am forced to restore
what I did not steal.
Psalm 69:4
David had it right, despite being written 3000 years ago. The last line in particular I think truly sums up the situation.
If the Isrealis disarmed to show their desire for peace, the "refugees" would still attack them relentlessly.
If the "refugees" disarmed to show the desire for peace, the Irealis would embrace them. Therein lies the conumdrum of the peace talks.
100% agreement. Part of the Leftist's love for the Arabs is their unjustifiable belief that they are standing up for the weak oppressed Arab. This is hogwash.
Hear, hear. The "refugees" are fodder in the eyes of the Arab nations, pawns to be used whenever it serves their purpose, as I've said before on this site. To hear the Left talk about them as underdogs irritates me to no end. You look at the big picture, it's Israel which has always been the underdog.
Sadly, what irritates me even more is when people from the Right criticize Israel or claim the Israel lobby is behind something, as if they're implying a conspiracy. It almost drives me nuts.
All I can say is 'God Bless America' and the freedoms you still fight to preserve. (I'm a non-Jewish outsider who admires your country from afar.)
And 'God Damn' (to borrow the phrase from Obama's long term pastor and spiritual mentor), ANY American president or official who tries to throw Israel to the wolves of Islam
I believe that if America crumbles – from forces inside or without – then God Help this planet. It will truly be an ugly place.
Burt, brilliantly stated!
That the missiles are pointed towards, and hit, Israel's neighborhood communities has always been enough for me to wonder how anyone could ever be on the side of the missile lobbers. but then again, the libs have always championed underbelly activities.
This was such a superbly lucid description of the "Islamist" problem that I can think of nothing relevant to add except perhaps that it should be required reading for everyone who feels they are a part of Western civilization (irrespective of their political leanings).
Fat chance of THAT happening though, for the insipid legions of politically correct dhimmis and "useful idiots" appear to be totally dedicated to fawning over and appeasing every whim of the lunatic Islamists in the hope that they will then start to "like" us, and perhaps refrain from beheading us "infidels" on their relentless march towards the establishment of a world caliphate (perhaps with "Sheik" Bin Laden as the supreme leader?).
Muslims worldwide need to understand that if Israel is ever forced to retaliate for a its very survival, that a single submarine launched nuclear device detonated over Mecca, followed by strikes on Tehran and some arab capitols, would kill millions and could render these places uninhabitable for centuries, "God willing."
The problem is that the Muslims KNOW full well that Israel, being the ONLY "moral" country in the entire accursed Middle East, would only resort to such a fitting "Biblical" reprisal if their total destruction was imminent and unavoidable. So the Muslims most effective tactic has been (and will continue to be) chipping away at Israel through endless, and highly effective, anti-Semitic (so called anti-"Zionist") propaganda both in the worldwide media as well as that corrupt bastion of vile and venal diplomats called the United Nations.
Israel was the birthplace of the ten commandments, while its "neighbors" gave the world slavery (which they still practice to this day!), beheadings, female genital mutilation, homicide bombers, and Jihad.
The problem, Burt, is that you can explain why Israel is good and great and its survival is essential to the survival of the West but it won't move those who vote Democrat because they hate America, hate Israel and hate the West. If Israel's death — and the destruction of the Jews — is a precursor to the death of America and Western Civlization, the leftists are all for it.
"Would anybody but an idiot have suggested that once America had sunk an equal number of Japanese battleships or killed an equal number of Japanese soldiers and sailors that we should have ceased hostilities and turned things over to European diplomats, especially after seeing how well those fellows had kept Hitler and Mussolini in check?"
Along those lines…
Did anyone ever ask "Why are we invading Germany when it didn't have anything to do with Pearl Harbor?"
I also wonder how long a pro-Palestinian liberal, living in San Diego, would put up with "Reconquistas" in Mexico launching rockets at them in an effort to reclaim California.
Thank you Burt for this moving summary of the entire problem. And while Arab, European and American mainstream media outlets inundate us with photography (much of it staged and distorted) of victims of the Israeli "apartheid" state, the Israelis whisk their dead out of the pizza parlors, nightclubs, cafes and buses within minutes so that nobody pro-Israel could ever capitalize on the gruesome evidence of what transpired. In Israel, the Israelis insist that life must go one immediately following inhumane war-crime attacks on their civilians, all while the terrorists (whom we are now supposed to call "man made disaster makers" busy with "overseas contingency operations" thanks to the Obama Administration's Orwellian nonsense), revel in their dead being paraded all over the Internet.
When it comes right down to it, Israel has the only first world nation in the Middle East despite concerted efforts by her neighbors to destroy her. You can try to tell me all you want that we prop her up, but many of her neighbors have been making oil money hand over fist. They have access to a wealth of revenues, so why aren't they equally prosperous? You have to start comparing cultures and societies, and I'll stand by the one that prospers in the face of enormous adversity any day over the one that has magnificent palaces but keeps its people in comparative squalor. Besides, only one nation over there hasn't been screaming "Death to America" in some way or other.
Just an intemperate thought? I think we should grid bomb from Eastern Israel to Pakistan, and let God sort it out. I personally believe the Middle East would be a better place without Muslims. This is what they think of us and our ally Israel, and all Western Culture, that means you to Liberals.
I wonder if much of the world's ambivalence towards Israel is the old "moral equivalence" values so many hold. Amazing that when Clinton wanted a "settlement" and Israel gave Arafat 99% of what he was always asking for, Yassar still turned it down. Because the Palestinians want nothing less than the destruction of Israel.
Thanks Burt great article.
I've never quite understood the love that the world seems to throw in the direction of Palestine. Are we so blind as to believe that Israel is in fact the danger in that region. Islamo fascist seem to all own multiple get out of jail free cards.
It's scary enough to see it happen on the world stage in the Middle East but it's also happening with in our own boarders. Newly converted Muslim shows up at a shopping mall with pockets full of grenades and the media tells us it's not a terrorist act. Muslim cuts off wife's head because she wants a divorce and all we hear is how peaceful their religion is.
Political Correctness or just blind stupidity is going to get us all killed in the name of Allah.
God bless Israel not everyone in the US has been duped by the media, keep fighting the great fight.
Hitler made the mistake of declaring war on the US right after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Good thing he did or our not so bright politicians may have left Europe to it's own demise.
Actually, yes, there were war protesters before and early into the war. As the war progressed, they weren't very popular during the war though.
All you wonderful people on this thread have made such lucid, well-reasoned and impassioned points that you've actually managed to do the "impossible": make me feel somewhat less despairing at the recent poisonous FLOOD-TIDE of vicious anti-Israel propaganda, marches and rallies taking place all over the Western world in response to Israel's MINIMAL efforts at self-preservation.
Thank you all from the bottom of my heart!
P.S. Just for the record, I too am a (totally) non-observant American Jew.
Ken,
Exactly! They wouldn't like it either, to have people marching and screeching for them to go back in the ovens. It's o.k. to some people when things don't affect them personally. Pretty sure the lobbing of rockets in WeHo might make them rethink things.
Great article Burt. Well said. So well said in fact, that the knee-jerk Israel haters haven't offered a show of vitriol yetl How long before TEHSTUPID and (man the screen name just jumped the tracks) crawl out from under their rocks?
Ken asked why we did Germany first, and there were protestors, but not after the Soviets were invaded and the Justice department stompted them. Funny story: The MacArthur stalinist who took over the famed MacArthur Foundation was convicted of draft evasion in a protest prior to the Soviet invasion, only to find himself a traitor to the party afterwards, and then rehabbed for the war on us. Bozo Mac was loved by the same Chicago crowd who today attacks the Israelis first, before they do us.
Frankly, I marvel at Israel also. I also marvel at jewish culture and society. Although I'll admit my literacy of things jewish is woefully inadequate, I don't understand why the jewish have been set upon in pogroms, driven out, and marked for extermination. I wish I understood them because we could all learn something about grit, fortitude, persistence, community, academic excellence, and professional success. Someone should write a book about what makes the jews worthy of such enmity from their fellow man. I've looked and I haven't found it.
My support has always been with Israel and against the fascists that surround her. No intelligent person can believe that should Israel be destroyed, the Islamic terrorists would be satisfied and leave the rest of the world alone. World domination is their ultimate goal. However, the Islamic terrorists must realize that Israel would not go quietly and all Arab capitals would remain radioactive wastelands for centuries to come.
THat picture makes me want to vomit. After seeing Sachsenhausen, and walking through the Gestapo Prison, meeting holocaust victims, seeing stupid, idiotic women, dressed in black, covering their faces, for all teh world victims of their mens misogynism, carrying signs saying Hitler had it right…what do they need to show them that they are living a lie? WHAT?
Spartan women had more freedom. They had atheletic events, were unashamed of the feminity and chose their husbands. How come ancients get it and these stupid, stupid women have no clue? After seeing this photo I am ashamed of the women trapped in Islam. You are slaves. SLAVES!
Amen.
Exactly who authorized $1 billion to Hamas?
The world has gone mad.
Dear Readers: Big Hollywood is truly amazing. Do you all realize how rare it is that there have thus far been 31 postings about this article, and we have yet to hear from a single left-wing apologist for the Islamics? Perhaps there is still hope for mankind.
Regards, Burt
Mr. Prelutsky, an excellent article that hit on all the major points, and hit them both squarely and correctly in my opinion. I've been making many of the same arguments myself for a good while now, but you did it in a much more eloquent manner than I could.
Amen!
And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.
Its not love for Palestine, its hate for Israel.
Doesn't matter who the Palestinians were or what they believed, the only way they WOULDN'T get this love is if they were Evangelical Christians.
I'm with ya Burt. You make an excellent point with regards to these "refugees" that were refused entry into Syria, Jordan or Egypt. Sadly the rest of the world refuses to acknowledge that the Palestinians are in this situation, not because of Israel, but to facilitate a proxy war against Israel. I think it also bears noting that an offer for citizenship was extended to all Arabs but they refused believing that doing so would be to acknowledge Israels right to exist. They have been given many opportunities to live side by side in equality with Jews but have turned their nose up at every offer.
Very interesting and intelligent blogs here but…… Can someone please explain to me why most prominent Jews in the US (EX NY Times etc) are all left leaning Democrats with their crazy opinions. Helping people that will harm them (Obama) get elected?? This is truly puzzling??
One of the main reasons I stand with conservatives.
Thanks, Burt
Burt I agree. Few people recall that during the first Iraqi war, Saddam hurled scud missles at Tel Aviv. Their response was measured, in part, because the US decided to do something about it. Now Iran is really close to lighting up the Mediterranean, and our current group of wizards may not respond in kind, calling on the UN to do something about it. While scrapping the military capabilty (Like Carter did) and shifting it to "domestic" progress, we are now in such perilous times, that anyone of twenty different parameters, i.e. N. Korea, etc can set an armageddon in motion that we could never comprehend. Isreal is an ally in a world gone bat$@it
Mr. Prelutsky,
Do you know who Ben-Gurion was?
He was the first prime minister of Israel.
Here's what he said:
"I don't understand your optimism. Why should the Arabs make peace? If I was an Arab leader I would never make terms with Israel. That is natural: we have taken their country. Sure God promised it to us, but what does that matter to them? Our God is not theirs. We come from Israel, but two thousand years ago, and what is that to them? There has been antisemitism, the Nazis, Hitler, Auschwitz, but was that their fault? They only see one thing: we have come here and stolen their country. Why should they accept that? They may perhaps forget in one or two generations' time, but for the moment there is no chance. So, it's simple: we have to stay strong and maintain a powerful army. Our whole policy is there. Otherwise the Arabs will wipe us out."
* As quoted in The Jewish Paradox : A personal memoir (1978) by Nahum Goldmann (translated by Steve Cox), p. 99."
Do you know more about Israel's foundation than Ben-Gurion, Mr. Prelutsky?
The idea that people simply "hate" Israel irrationally is nothing more than self-serving tripe. When Israel's foundation is rank colonialism and those wronged by its creation are still around and suffering, then of course it's in the interest of Israel and its sympathizers to suggest that any anti-Israeli sentiment must stem from irrational hatred rather than the injustice of the situation. No, they don't hate America and Israel. They hate America BECAUSE of Israel. AIPAC and Mr. Prelutsky would probably prefer not to stress that causal link.
Someone did,a long time ago.it is written.this is a very old war,but the end of the book is marvelous, you should read it.it is truly the big picture of our world today and tomorrow.let not your heart be troubled,it is all going exactly as planned.how could this desert bloom amidst such hatred without divine protection?it couldn't.
like it or not, israel was chosen, for terrible suffering to be sure but what a glorious promise waiting for them all.
pray for them, our future depends on it as much as theirs.
I can only offer a sort of "Biblical Cliff Notes" summary. God chose the decendants of Abraham, through the line of Issac and his son Jacob (renamed Israel by God) to be His unique people. God also says that for all time their will be enmity between the decendants of Jacob and the decendants of the other Abrahamic peoples. Through His people, the Israelites, God would give to all humanity His law for living, greater knowledge of Himself, His prophets, and His Messiah (His Annointed One who would restore fallen humanity's relationship to Him). After giving the Iraelites His law, God tells them a bit of the future. God tells them that in time they will break the covenant He has made with them. And when they do God will cast them out of the land He has given them, the land of Caanan (modern day Israel, Jordan and part of Syria) and scatter them across the earth. more…..
And God also tells them, that no matter where they are scattered, they will never lose their "peoplehood", even in the face of hatred by the indigenous people. And one day He will restore the land of Israel, and gather His people from across the world to return there. If you persevere and read the entire Bible, the history and future of Israel (and all humanity) is all there.
I had an uncle who was a prisoner at Sachsenhausen. Member of the Norwegian underground. 41 months in the camp. What a tale he had to tell.
Burt, I made the same observation several hours ago. Even tried to bait the ninnies. Shows you how disarming real truth is. Again, great article.
One of the most moving things I've ever seen was "Eagles over Auschwitz" which was a documentary from a few years back, it involved a group of survivors going back to Auschwitz to lay a wreath at the memorial there. They actually walked up the rail spur, under the gates with the infamous words "Arbeit Macht Frei" written on the arch, while under escort of Israeli soldiers bearing the Israeli flag. At the culmination of the ceremony 3 Israeli Air Force F-15s flew a low, slow formation over the camp, one of them breaking out of formation to do the "missing man" salute. Anyone that could watch that, and who has any understanding of what it all meant and not be moved, well there is something wrong with them in my opinion.
What the Islamists and others who would try to do the same thing need to understand is that "Never Again" aren't just words, it's a promise backed by steel.
Heh, here in my "small town city" there's a community organization, the (fill in city) Social Club. Before the war it was the German Club. Very fast name change, they wanted to make sure there was no doubt of their loyalty.
Short answer, they're conservatives. Moral conservatives with self-restraint, fiscal conservatives who invested wisely, thus they earned and held lots of wealth. Today that yields class envy, but in the times of monarchies and serfs there weren't such rebellions and the aristocracy also wanted their money and property. So, then as now, the story went out, these people with wealth must have cheated and stolen to get it, so it's only justice to take it away. Eliminating the source of the problem, so it doesn't happen again, is a bonus, although preferred over enslaving them due to their history of repeatedly rising from slavery.
Heh. Ben-Gurion is absolutely correct. He has perfectly described the situation from the Arab perspective. I would expect no less an attitude from a people so fractured, who gleefully skirmish between tribes and factions, who are unable to truly unite even when facing a common enemy. Witness their "unity" over the Palestinians, long regarded as homeless wanderers throughout their lands, vagrants, treated worse than gypsies, worse than dirt, the only thing agreed upon is they want them banished somewhere else, with a mythical homeland on their enemy's soil a perfect choice for exile. There is one other thing they agree upon, long demonstrated in their dealings with "infidels," that they will gladly say and do anything, all treachery is allowable, to remove outsiders from their dealings, remove the distraction so they can resume concentrating on their own internal battles.
Thank you for providing that wonderful, illuminating quote.
FTA ". . . the truth is that most of the land that is now Israel was purchased from Arabs, at exorbitant prices, over several decades by Zionists who began settling there in the 19th century."
In an odd way, the return of contractually obligated AIG bonus money to "the taxpayers" has the same synergy. Leftism and extremism frequently dovetail. God, bless the Israelis with courage, fortitude, and the will to survive and prosper.
Wait a ________ (hmm, can't use 'cotton-pickin' anymore) minute: Did that say "62% of Republicans in America sided with Israel,"? You mean 38% DON'T? WTF?!
It's that conspiracy side of the party. Go far enough to the right and you back up into the left.
If Canada or Mexico, sent one missile over the border, would we be as tolerant as Israel?
"There will be no peace until they love their children, more than they hate us."
Well, yeah, but I would've guessed that's something like 10%, not damn near 2 out of 5!
Abe, said like a true terrorist apologist. Ok, so the blacks that recently had a protest in CA and celebrated the cop killer and the child rapist, are they on your list of support as well, since you can drum up an equally long list of reasons why blacks should hate and kill cops? The bottom line is that that they still hate irrationally. Irrational hate leads to doing things as a response that make things worse for their cause. That is what the radical Palestinians are doing. And they are getting support from other Arab nations in order to punish Israel as opposed to actually helping the Palestinians. It is easy to tell the dopes in the crowd. Those that support the Palestinian terrorism are the dopes. And I am sure you have a long list of dopey irrational reasons why you support them but after all is said and done, you will still turn out to be wrong.
Mr Prelutsky –
Well said, I agree completely. Israel has shown remarkable self-restraint so far.
If the Arabs disarmed tomorrow, there would be peace. If Israel disarmed tomorrow, there would be no more Israel.
'My mother's father would consider me a heathen, and Hitler would have me exterminated'… if that doesn't sum up a religious dilemna pithily, we don't know what does…
Republicans, still, aren't a completely solid block, but then neither are the Dems. In this case, I think that 38% represents mainly two groups, those worn out by this cold-warm-hot war who just want it to end, and frustrated ones saying "C'mon already, why haven't they won by now, they're the freakin' ISRAELIS, man!"
There never was a "Palestine" – it was a region of Jordan. The "Palestinians" are descendants of the Arabs who swept the area with Mohammad in the 7th century. The Jews have been there for 5,000 years, give or take a few years. A pundit said that "The Palestinians have a good case, but the Jews have a better case".
The country of Israel was mandated by the U.N. in 1948. There are many Arab Israelis, who have far more rights than Arabs in other areas of the Middle East.
The "refugees" in Gaza and elsewhere are those Arabs who wanted to believe Egypt, Syria et. al. in 1948 saying they would wipe out Israel, so they refused the Israel's invitation to return.
The dirty little secret is that no Arab country wants to take these "refugees".
Abe–Obviously I spoke too soon. But at the time I posted my comment, it was true that only clear-thinking people had posted any comments. I had not heard or read Ben-Gurion's quote, but it makes no sense, so I have to question its authenticity. The fact remains that most of the land that became Israel had been bought and paid for by Jewish settlers from Europe fduring the 60+ years prior to the establishment of the state.
I wonder, though, how you feel about Pakistan? That was a nation created at just about the same time as Israel. Do you have the same objection to an Islamic state as you do a Jewish one? Somehow I suspect not.
Sincerely, Burt Prelutsky
The movie "The Best Years of Our Lives" has a scene with a liberal which showed the anti war sentiment of the time. Not much different than the views of today, when it is a Republican president. For some reason all the code pink and anti war demonstrations either don't take place or are not covered in the news anymore. What a surprise.
Well said in a concise manner.
Same here, I was expecting TEHSTUPID long ago.
They have chosen another religion. Liberalism
Let him rave on, that men will know him mad. …
I'm not Jewish. I'm a Viking and a Celt. And yet, I support Israel.
======They only see one thing: we have come here and stolen their country.====
Ben Gurion would have never uttered such nonsense since it is historically false. Whoever attributed that quote to Ben Gurion probably fabricated it.
I misread the quote, Ben Gurion is right, that is the way arabs would see it. It doesn’t make it true, but the arabs believe what they want to believe.
That the missile lobbers tend to launch from their own civilian neighborhoods, guaranteeing that return fire or attempts to destroy their launchers and ammo dumps (also in civilian buildings) will result in dead civilians is another reason to question the pro-Palestinian side.
Honor killings were also big in Brazil in the 1980s and 1990s, probably for years before that. In the 1950s, most Republicans wanted nothing to do with Isreal, or for that matter letting Jews into their exclusive clubs. Don't forget that Israel was founded by socialists, with the support of all three of Joseph Stalin's votes in the UN. And I really wonder about that photo: what are Arabic speaking women in an Arabic speaking country running around with signs written in English for? I had the same doubt about a news broadcast from Yugoslavia, in which a woman speaking English with an eastern European accent told a crowd of Serbian-speaking Serbian nationalists "God will redeem the Serbs." Now that is fodder for conspiracy theories about the media.
That said, we all know that the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem openly invited former Nazis to find refuge with him, as have some elements in the Syrian government. But its not racial. Its not, "Arabs are like this, Jews are like that." Some deeply religious Jewish communities in Israel are getting to be a lot like their Arab neighbors, except that they shoot at each other — but then, Arab communities have been shooting at each other for centuries, when there weren't common targets to shoot at. And some Jews in Israel are still leftists. And some of those commie-loving Jews in America have turned conservative. Etc. Etc. Etc. Cut the stereotypes, please.
I agree with the other posters. Quite frankly, it will be impossible to understand what's happening in the middle east in general, and Israel in particular, unless one has a thorough understanding of the Bible. Everything is addressed there. I might offer a couple suggestions that also speak to this.
