If I Were Boss
by Burt PrelutskyI have always contended that anybody who seeks the presidency is an egomaniac, every bit as certifiably crackers as those poor souls wandering around the grounds of the asylum insisting they’re Napoleon.
Still, I’m generally willing to cut people a reasonable amount of slack. But it’s quite another thing to pretend that a community organizer with just four years in the Senate, two of which he spent on the hustings, is qualified to be the leader of the free world. Even if I approved of his left-wing agenda, I’d find it impossible to make a case for him. Frankly, if it were up to me, I’d send this Napoleon wannabe to Elba.
I, on the other hand, a mature and seasoned individual who has never set foot in a law school, would make an ideal leader. However, I’m put off by politics. Rather than presidential material, I see myself in the role of a benevolent dictator.
For openers, I’d censor movies. It used to be great sport for smart people to ridicule the Hays Office and the Breen Office for keeping a jaundiced eye on Hollywood. But the plain fact is, movies were a lot better in the 1930s and 40s than they’ve been ever since. They have been particularly lousy these past couple of decades and, as a movie fan, I’d like to see what today’s writers and directors could turn out if they had to rely on their imaginations and on ours.
Next, I’d clean up baseball. First, I’d remove all the tainted statistics from the record book of every player guilty of having used performance-enhancing drugs. Next, I’d kick all 105 major leaguers who were found to be using them out of the game. Then, I’d boot Bud Selig out as Commissioner. By not policing baseball as he should have, he encouraged players to cheat. And for that, he was getting paid about $17 million a year. That’s a lot of moolah for some schmoe who can’t hit, run, throw or catch.
For many years, Kenesaw Mountain Landis was pictured as a bad guy because, as the first Commissioner of Major League Baseball, he had banished Shoeless Joe Jackson and seven of his Chicago White Sox teammates from the game. He took a great deal of abuse because Jackson played his heart out in the 1919 World Series and because the players had been found not guilty of taking bribes by an early version of the O.J. jury. But Landis said they had all sealed their fates when they went to gambler Arnold Rothstein’s hotel room to discuss terms for throwing the Series.
The Black Sox scandal, as it came to be known, could have destroyed the game if not for Landis’s integrity. As a sidebar, it should be noted that in spite of looking like a very austere undertaker, Landis was known as a very soft touch. Every down and out ex-major leaguer knew that Landis was always ready to reach for his wallet.
After straightening out baseball and Hollywood, I would turn my attention to Washington, D.C. With me in charge, people like Barbara Boxer, Harry Reid, Charles Schumer, Pat Leahy, Charley Rangel and Chris Dodd, would all be free to go home and play with the grandkids. Robert Byrd would be free to go home and play with the great-great-great-grandkids, and Barney Frank would just be free to go home and play.
With no further need of a Supreme Court, we’d no longer have to sit through such spectacles as seeing the likes of Ted Kennedy, John Kerry and Arlen Specter, sitting in judgment of their betters, people such as Clarence Thomas and Charles Pickering.
People like Bob Beckel and James Carville, who have spent their lives sucking at the teat of the DNC, would have to find honest work, and I’d see to it that Bill Maher, Keith Olbermann, Chris Matthews and Al Franken, found employment as a barbershop quartet. After all, they’re already in perfect harmony, so let these bozos sing for their supper.
As for George Soros, a man who simultaneously manages to give Hungarians, Jews and money-changers, a bad name, he would go on trial for being a Nazi collaborator. To be fair, he was still a teenager at the time. But, like Bill Ayers, he is proudly unrepentant. As he explained to Steve Croft on “60 Minutes,” if he hadn’t helped the Nazis confiscate the belongings of his fellow Jews, someone else would have. And, no, he went on, he’s never been troubled by bad dreams or a guilty conscience when he watched his friends and neighbors being herded into boxcars.
Finally, if I were boss, we’d hear no more claptrap about the Fairness Doctrine. In case anyone is wondering why, after all these years, the Democrats have declared war on Rush Limbaugh, it’s not entirely their clumsy attempt to distract us from the crumbling economy and Obama’s heavy-handed attempt to turn us into the Soviet Union of America, it’s to help gain popular support for the more aptly named Censorship Bill.
After all, the other side only has the Oval Office, the House, the Senate, NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, PBS, the New York Times, the L.A. Times, Newsweek, Time and the Washington Post, whereas the all-powerful conservatives have talk radio. As the liberals are so fond of saying, it’s just not fair.

I'd be the first in line to help your campaign efforts. I'm assuming you'd start out in an election, then move to dictatorship.
I'll vote for you, Burt. If I get in on the ground floor, can I have a cabinet seat?
I see myself as "Commissioner of Golf".
As to MLB, don't you think they owe Pete Rose an apology?
I'd love to see a group of people who aren't career politicians organize as the Repeal Party. They would spend their 4 years doing nothing but scouring the 2 million plus federal laws, rules and regulations looking to scrap as many as they could find that have little or no value, aren't constitutionally sound or actually infringe US citizens. They could start with eliminating stupid environmental laws like the ones favoring the snail darter over the property owner.
Goodness! a passioned and well reasined defense of the Hays code- which of course is only second to Joe McCarthy on the Hollywood's most hated list… Mr Prelutsky is, of course, correct. Any structure is good- and the Hays code made filmmakers act responsibly when depicting any kind of debasing behavior. Instead, we have the completely ineffective MPAA rating system which allows 12 and 13 year olds to see violence and degradation on a massive scale… one can make the case that we are not better off. The only self-censorship extant is making sure no conservative values are shown in a positive light…
Is there really a need for a congress under your realm? I would not give a whit if the whole lot of them were pitched. Heave ho.
great idea… good luck with that!
I greatly enjoy the tenor of this article, but I think you weaken your thesis of "making things right" by invoking the name of Kennesaw Landis, a notorious racist who was instrumental in keeping blacks out of the major leagues. Google "Kennesaw Landis racist" to find numerous sites which document Landis' dishonorable actions, including his abhorrent treatment of Jack Johnson (black boxing champion) when he served as a judge.
Landis is NOT worthy of your admiration, and certainly should not be held up as a model to follow, even given your anecdotal evidence of his "softness" regarding older ballplayers.
Burt, I mean MR. DICTATOR, please tell us you'll banish the idiots that host the VIEW to some speck of an island in the Pacific Ocean?!?!?!
We got through a whole post cycle until the last racist comment…where o where are the trolls today? Did they get the invitation to the Wednesday taxpayer funded happy hour @ the House o' bama?
My two arguments for guidelines are always the TV show "Arrested Development" and the film "Psycho." There are fans of AD who wished it had been on cable because it could have 'gone so much further'. I say that, because it had to follow the general guidelines of broadcast TV, the writers and creators were driven to be more… creative! They had to push themselves, and the show was better for their efforts. Too bad for them I didn't discover it until it was on DVD, so I wasn't tuning in and fighting for it while it was still on the air. As for "Psycho," the opening sequence in the hotel room remains one of the most erotic I've ever seen, We all know why they were there in that room and didn't need to see them nude or engaged in order to feel the heat. Restraint served that film in more ways than one, and rewarded filmlovers ever since. I'm not for the 'one-foot on-the-floor rule' (or whatever the specific phrasing was), or separate beds (silly), but I believe the challenges of personal and professional restraint always result in higher creativity and quality.
Landis was a product of his time- not to diminish your charges- but he did bring a steely discipline to the game. He was ignorant of baseball (and apparently other things as well) but is generally regarded with helping restore integrity to the sport.
Part one
it is my belief that the correct conservative view on "performance enhancing" drugs is to leave them alone, in fact, legalize them. There are several reasons for this. First, let me just say that the negative media/cultural campaign is based on lies and misconceptions. Anabolic Steroids are classified as scheduled drugs and that in and of itself is a tragedy. Anabolic steroids are based on a hormone that occurs naturally in humans. To ban them, when they are a legitimate treatment for wasting disease not to mention they can and SHOULD be used for male andropause. Women get treatment for menopause, but men have to go to "special" doctors to get treated for their own testosterone difficiencies which occur in every man starting at the age of around 30. SInce they have made testosterone and its like Scheduled substances right along with Crack and Heroin, it is very hard for men to get the treatment they need from doctors so men get to suffer with "bitch tits" or gynecomastia, as they get older along with muscle wasting, fatigue, low sex drive, and a whole host of issues which affect their quality of life. Steroids were rammed through the legislature, led by Democrats like Chuck Shumer, and made to be scheduled like illegal narcotics. this in and of itself is a travesty of justice. To qualify for scheduled status, a drug has to be physically addicting, offer no medical value, and correlate heavily with crime. Steroids are none of these things. They are also completely safe when used properly and NO ONE has ever died from them. So people are allowed to get life threatening plastic surgery to look better, but people who are in to health and as a constituency bodybuilders and fitness buffs are overwhelmingly law abiding citizens who are in to HEALTH, not destroying their bodies like meth addicts. And they are now made in to criminals.
There's something…interesting in your choice to bring back censorship for films at the same time you're trying to destroy the so-called Fairness doctrine for all time. Not hypocritical, necessarily (the political speech that would be regulated by the Fairness doctrine is more important than the smut that would get censored). But definitely interesting.
I think that's what BO is doing, don't you? Yikes.
Completely agree. They've been a bane since the very beginning. Even George Washington couldn't get money for them for the Revolutionary War. Down with Congress! I think I may like being an anarchist!
Part One (i hate this breaking up comments, and then part one gets "lost" in moderation?)

Football players get pounded on the field by other steroid users, but they arent supposed to take them for when they are going to get pounded again in a few more days?
They could do a great service to our country and colonize the Moon. Though I like the Hasselback woman. She's got guts.
Why, Old Tom? Hopefully not because of their PED-related disgrace, because his cheating admission's a scandal all its own.
Burt, I'd please like to be Secretary of Gettin' Down!!!
You could do it pro bono….
Ha, ha! LOL, good one. And, I for one, would love to live in your dictatorship …. as long as you promise to take advice from Rush Limbaugh. Actually, I'd live under the dictatorship of just about anyone to get those scoundrels you've named out of Washington and out of the media.
"s for sports, can someone tell me how "performance enhancing drugs" are any different then Tiger Woods getting laser eye surgery for better than perfect vison?"
Sure, if you were a golfer, you'd know that when it comes to Tiger it's not his eyesight that makes him the greatest golfer o HIS time. It's his mental strength, his physical strength and control of his swing, and his uncanny ability to manipulate ball patterns and instantly know the trajectory of any given swing in his repertoire.
As for your rant on how many in organized commercial sports are using then yes they should all be weeded out. Just b/c everyone's doing it, doesn't make it right. Especially when so much money rides on it. And how is it un-conservative to achieve at anything with no help but one's determination?
BTW, people, if you're wondering why I emphasized "his" it's b/c altho I stand by that statement, Bobby Jones was and is the best golfer that ever lived!!!!
Yup, he did say FDR was one of his heroes. Didn't he try for more than two terms? I'm asking b/c I went to public schools in SC in the 80's. Talk about "YIKES!"
The Pacific Ocean is too kind…how about Antarctica ?
Fun read Burt! “It’s good to be king, ha…
You'd have to change the name though, USA wouldn't work anymore. How about "Democratic People's Republic of Burt?" If you have any openings for sycophantic lackeys, I'm an experienced hanger-on. Oh by the way, where'd you get that pic of my boss?
Reasonable points all. While I agree to some extent with your assertion that Landis was a "product of his time," most of the reading I have done seems to indicate that he was at the forefront of segregation in baseball, and actively used his power to hinder the efforts of others who felt that it was time for change. That makes it tough to excuse him, in my book.
Still, he did act decisively in the Black Sox Scandal – and the willingness to act decisively is a quality little in evidence among most of today's leaders.
Hell. He gives Nazis a bad name. Were Storm Troopers any worse than the Kos Kids?
Hell. He gives Nazis a bad name. Were Storm Troopers any worse than the Kos Kids? Except that the Kos Kids haven't been given guns yet.
Bikini Atoll — or at least, what's left of it.
Plus, frankly, I don't see the Kos Kids having the endurance it takes to march anywhere or the fortitude to stand up to the well armed populous who would love a crack at these kids.
Bert, here's how I'd clean up baseball. Cancel the sport and increase the length of the football season.
I would like the position of Secretary of Cheeriness! All those who disagreed with you would get to spend time educating themselves in how to be happy that you are their dictator…LOL! People say that I have a cheery disposition
!
- “But Landis said they had all sealed their fates when they went to gambler Arnold Rothstein’s hotel room to discuss terms for throwing the Series.”
Yes, their fates were sealed. Ex post facto, that is.
Surely, if the players had known simply listening to gamblers would get them banned for life, they might have acted differently. Arbitrary justice!
- "Didn't he try for more than two terms?"
Not only did he try, he got them. It wasn't illegal to do so, just in poor taste. Especially since he was literally dying during his last election.
- "There's something…interesting in your choice to bring back censorship for films at the same time you're trying to destroy the so-called Fairness doctrine for all time."
Hays Code censorship is private, whereas the Fairness Doctrine is public. Big difference. You can always go make an independent film, but you can't escape the feds (or rather, not forever).
And if they did get guns, they'd probably form a circular firing squad after surrounding some poor conservative who wasn't wearing a Che tee-shirt. BTW, did you notice that someone pointed out to me that my DFTT wasn't even original? So I'm only going to use it when I see my friends slipping into the troll trap. I'm deeply wounded by my apparent lack of originality, so I'm sulking.
He got four, in fact. He died in the first year of his fourth term, if memory serves.
Can you give a gift that won't offend other Heads of State? I'll vote for that!
Hear Hear!
Why does good advice need to be original? It's an important message that needs to be posted every 50 feet in big bold letters. Don't sulk.
I agree except for dealing wth sports. i'd put them last, 'cuz when the REVOLUTION comes, there won't be no sports!!!
"I went to public schools in SC" — I don't know if I'm supposed to laugh or cry? You seem to have recovered nicely?
So you're kind of ambivalent on this issue?
I suspect it's a lot more than that actually, as disturbing as that may sound.
I liked the seventh inning grope. That was genuis!
You have my vote!
Back when I was a CEO, I would not have interviewed a guy with Obama's resume for an executive postion, being that he had never had a real job.
Now this bird is spending some of my retirement money.
Life is not fair.
LOL
And if you could also make it a requirement that men in Congress must under no circumstances where those stupid little bow ties and round, horn-rimmed glasses a la Al Franken. Or have the last name of Kennedy. Where do we send our campaign donations?

=====Rather than presidential material, I see myself in the role of a benevolent dictator.======
I made the exact same comment on one of my favorite blogs, http://nicedoggie.net/2009/, where I was making the point that our problems are so endemic that they cannot be resolved at the ballot box, it will take a dictator. The donks would definitely not consider it a benevolent dictatorship, they would be on their knees begging for the good ol' days of Bush.
Read the article below to understand why DC needs to be burned to the ground with all the donks and rinos. Let us rebuild from their ashes; we'll build a monument with mortar that contains the bones of the dead traitors as a reminder to future politicians……………..

“Paulson & Co., which has already earned hundreds of millions of dollars shorting British financial stocks this year, seems poised to make US$400 million more doing so.
Based on regulatory filings, New York-based Paulson may have made £311 million (US$429.7 million) shorting shares of Lloyds Banking Group and HBOS. The hedge fund, which made a name for itself two years ago with triple-digit returns earned betting against the subprime mortgage market, may have made £200 million (US$276.3 million) alone on the Lloyds short.
Earlier this year, Paulson covered its short interest in the Royal Bank of Scotland, earning a £275 million (US$380 million) profit between September and January. Like his RBS killing, the Lloyds and HBOS shorts have been on since September.”

I've always had a hankering to be the Secretary of something or maybe Whitehouse chef? Maybe, Secretary of Interior Decorating and Culinary Services! Please??? I can make pie! I understand kitchen table diplomacy!

Part Two
As for sports, can someone tell me how "performance enhancing drugs" are any different then Tiger Woods getting laser eye surgery for better than perfect vison? Or how about polarized contact lenses that allow a baseball player to see a fly ball in the sun? Or how about pitchers undergoing elective surgery on their arms that allow them to throw the ball faster than without it? What about all the advances in training and diet and all the over the counter nutritional products available today? is the playing field "level" compared to 30 years ago? NO it isn't. Oh, and here is a little news flash for the rest of you. If you think that just a "handful" of elite players in sports are using steroids you are wrong. Those are just the dumb ones that got caught. 90 percent of football players have and are using. The vast majority of players in any athletic sports do. There are ways to take some of these drugs that make it so they can NEVER be caught if done right. There are also drugs that will never show on tests. not to mention ways to beat them. Take one look at football players of today and compare them with 30 years ago, it aint genes and training that make them so much bigger, faster, and stronger. Just the principle of how these drugs were scheduled without fitting the criterion and despite doctors testimoney that the drugs were valuable and not harmful in and of itself is sickening. All so that the government can have more control and the pharmaceutical industry. The media lies about these drugs, and good people are made in to criminals. As a society, we want to see the best, we want to be entertained, but then we are going to go after people who are just trying to provide the entertainment that we have asked for? It is sickening. People need to get educated. I have spent YEARS studying Anabolic Steroids, and I can't stand hearing the lies anymore. I hope that Conservatives realize that this witch hunt is anti Freedom, anti conservative, and just another example of mainstream BIAS.
I heard a stat that said there use to be 1/3 of the politicians in DC were veterans. Now a 1/3 are lawyers.
I think that is part of the problem in DC.
You did not see that he is dictator?
Jeesh! Sheesh and get with the dream program!
Try not to freak: 43 Senators (26 Dem, 17 Rep) and 143 Congressmen (95 Dem, 48 Rep)
I am certain the DICTATOR would have set me straight and have set the tax price according to his will…LOL!
I like to go nuclear with my comments… and my atolls!
Oh… my heart. Help me, Spock!
Reminds me of Futurama. Fry goes to a Blurnsball game-looks like baseball, but the ball is on a rubber tether, and at one point there's a multi-ball a la pinball. Fry says "This is an affront to the national pastime! Baseball was classic and pure!" Leela says, "Fry, face it, baseball was boring until we jazzed it up." Fry: "So they finally jazzed it up, huh?"
I could go for national dodgeball teams. Or a chain-race NASCAR league.
Your use was the first time I'd heard it? I thought it was a good idea.
My money would be on the conservative.
On the circular firing squad, I once sat with a Canadian in Reno, NV playing poker. Around 2 in the morning, this guy pulls out some Canadian currency and shows me that if you folded it into thirds, the guys on horses (possibly mounties) formed a circular firing squad! That was hilarious!
Burt, again you make some excellent points – I'd nominate you for King. However, I would go a bit farther. Along with Reid, Pelosi, Hoyer and Frank, I'd also clean out the nests at State, Defense, Treasury, HHS and whateverelse and throw those "civil" servants into the wind. The systemic decline of our country is also due to the inherent liberalism that survives through administration after administration. IMO, they were really GW's undoing, thwarting and underminding at every possible turn. The musical chairs has got to stop, in order to make clear inroads against the general malaise and nasty partisonism that currently plagues us.
Nice to see another AD fan! "Come on!!"
You pretty much summed up my thoughts on the subject. Of course, the Code would have to be changed (I assume) to accommodate certain things, like the separate beds, and other arcane rules like that. Would filmmakers be barred from covering certain subjects that were previously deemed taboo? What about gay characters? After a quick perusal of the Code on Wikipedia, I'm not sure it could be done. No complicated safe-cracking scenes, no revenge, no ridicule of religion (so I assume mocking Islam wouldn't be allowed either).
If I were Mr. Prelutsky and I were dictator, instead of bringing back the Code, I would simply reform the studio system that made movies like Psycho possible in the first place. Better to change hearts and minds of future filmmakers than give them rules to follow. (I think Apatow could survive with the Code; Kevin Smith, probably not… and I'm a fan of both.)
As director Nick Meyer says in the Star Trek II DVD commentary, "Art thrives on restrictions." It's certainly food for thought.
You used the word "bikini" in reference to the women of the View? Thanks Andrew, I just threw up in my mouth.
I was thinking "I am so sorry!" was the appropriate response, but I went to public school in Alabama during the 70's and 80's. I've had to self teach, and I assume the job will never be finished or done correctly.
USArtboy,
I am all in for that job, and I would be brutal! I would have that sucker pared in 6 mos, and I would do it for a nominal fee. Vote Burt.
She seems sweet, but the fact that she is on that show and even appears to suck up to the rest of the gang, deducts massive points, IMO/. I would have strangled that Joy Behar long, long ago.
I don't have a real opinion on the sports use of steroids, I honestly don't care about that, one way, or another. I do agree that the way that steriods have been classified is completely wrong, and detrimental for many average men who are suffering and need therapy with this type of drug. It is treated like heroin or cocaine, and it is easier for a man to get either of them than it is to get proper treatment for hormone deficiencies. Hopefully this will get addressed soon, and changed.
Oh, I read a far lefties site yesterday, curious what they would have to say about the recent shootings in Bama and in Germany. They, of course, were all about gun banning, but a few had some, let's say, "creative" ideas what to do. Someone actually decided that a gun w/ rubber bullets that emit a knock out drug was the way to go, (isn't that a movie or book thing?), and a few liked the idea of some sort of keypad on the gun where you had to put in a pin #. I can't see burgulars or rapists waiting to attack you, whilst you keyed in personal info, but, hey maybe they could be convinced. The leftie sites are a gold mine for comedy, as long as you don't think about the fact they are allowed to vote, drive, and bear offspring.
Have you ever been around a lib, and there are guns around. It’s funny it’s like a cross to a vampire. These idiots think that the gun will jump up and with a mind of it’s own, “Take hostages or something?” The good news with the Kos-Kids they are too in love with themselves to have many children, and as a voting group not very reliable. As far as guns are concerned these leftist dweebs haven’t a clue.
Re: MLB, I'd make 'em all shave that s**t off their faces and pull their pants up from around their ankles and, in general, quit looking like bums
Well stated TGS. I believe we are pretty much screwed with any Washington politician, right or left. Did every one see how happy the politicians were when TARP was passed, how jilted they were when the country stopped immigration reform right & left, and 9 Republicans voted for the $410Billion omnibus bill. Washington politicians love government the only difference is by degree. Washington needs to be cleaned, out and start over again.
Burt, you have the votes for dictator, but you already have competition who think they are. Every liberal thinks they have the right and duty to order the masses around. You can't smoke, eat good, home school, etc. A favorite of mine is: "That offends me." Some that are offended can't be identified as emperiors by actions or intelligence. They may even be total strangers. I guess they could save a lot of time by wearing an emperior name tag or one saying liberal.
43 is more than 1/3 of Senators….trying to remember the # of reps….
Bet they didn't tie it to the meds the kid was on.
Bet they didn't tie it to the meds the kid was on.
Regardless of the quality of my education, at least I got out before all this social engineering crap. Which is what social engineering is. CRAP!
Ok, so make me the Boss of NASCAR and I would immediately fire Brian France and the whole gang. I would then revamp the points system, give Jeff Gordon his 2 other Cup Championships he should've won in the last 5 years, get rid of the top 35 rule, let any sponsor in, get rid of Sprint as the main sponsor and rename it the Winston Cup Series, let all sorts of "innovation" take place, replace the COT with actual stock cars of Mustangs, Camaros, and Challengers, but make sure they have all the safety equipment. Oh yeah, bring back North Wilkesboro, Rockingham, and bulldoze the homes sitting on top of Riverside and rebuild that road course.
Now, if I were the Boss of the US…. well, I was a Republican, but have a serious Libertarian bent…. lol
