A 12-Step Liberal Recovery Program
by Burt PrelutskyMost 12-step programs start out by requiring that people understand that they’re powerless over their addiction and that only by turning their lives over to a Power greater than themselves can they be restored to sanity. Far be it for me to suggest that I am that Power, but clearly someone has to step in and try to rescue these poor liberal souls. Even the most harebrained among them deserves that much.
First, though, they have to acknowledge that Ted Kennedy, Nancy Pelosi, John Murtha, Dick Durbin, Charles Rangel, Harry Reid and Charles Schumer, are not moderates, but, rather, leftists with a Socialist agenda. Furthermore, they must recognize that the New York Times, the Washington Post, the L.A. Times, CNN, the three major networks, the news magazines and the New Yorker, are not objective in their reporting of political events, and neither are Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann and Bill Maher, in their commentary. If these entities and individuals are not on the payroll of the DNC, they certainly should be. They certainly put in longer hours than Howard Dean.
Step #1: It is high time that every American be guaranteed the right to speak freely. It is not reserved solely for left-wing college students who wish to take advantage of the first amendment to shout down conservatives. At the same time, they must not construe the conservative’s right to dismiss them as arrogant idiots as censorship.
Step #2: Affirmative action argues that African Americans and Latinos are intellectually inferior and are unable to compete academically unless other students are handicapped because of their race. Interestingly enough, when blacks and Hispanic students are given these unfair advantages, it’s rarely at any cost to white students, whose rate of college admissions remains constant; instead, it’s nearly always another minority group, Asians, who pay the price. This is what left-wingers refer to as leveling the playing field.
Step #3: Liberals always claim to be in favor of higher taxes, agreeing with Bill Clinton that the government invariably spends money more wisely than those who actually earn it. However, such prominent proponents of higher taxes as George Soros, Ted Kennedy and Mr. and Mrs. John Kerry, protect their own otherwise taxable income through trusts and offshore accounts. Obviously, any American who believes higher taxes are a good thing can do the honorable thing by spurning all deductions and paying Uncle Sam everything up to 100% of his income.
Step #4: Even the most secular of liberals seems to believe that Jimmy Carter is a saint. The evidence for this seems to be that he has on occasion posed with a hammer in his hand at Habitat for Humanity building sites and is constantly walking around with a expression on his face that suggests he has just forgiven Pontius Pilate for betraying him. This is the same fellow, let us never forget, who called Yasser Arafat his good friend and who has accepted untold millions of dollars from Arab cut-throats, who ask nothing in return except that he go on insisting that there would be peace in the Middle East if only those darn Israelis would disappear from the face of the earth.
Step #5: Stop insisting that all wars are bad. It only makes you sound daft. Carrying signs that equate a U.S. president, any U.S. president, with Adolph Hitler is not only rude, but suggests you’re certifiably nuts. Every president has left office right on schedule. Aside from FDR, who just happened to get elected four times, not one of them has remained in office beyond eight years. On the other hand, Hitler ran Germany for 12 years and only death and the allied forces brought that to an end; Stalin ran the Soviet show for 31 years; while that hero of the left, Fidel Castro, held the reins, not to mention the whip, for about 50 years.
Step #6: Repeat after me, “Separation of church and state” exists nowhere in the Constitution. The first amendment does not require the removal of Christmas trees from the village green, the 10 Commandments from courthouse walls or “under God” from the Pledge of Allegiance. All it does is forbid Congress from establishing a state religion, such as the Church of England, and anybody who tells you otherwise is a liar and, most likely, a card-carrying member of the ACLU.
Step #7: Stop using the word “big” as a pejorative. There is nothing intrinsically bad about big oil, big agriculture or big pharmaceuticals. Overall, they do a very good job of keeping our cars on the road, food on our tables and most of us over 60 alive and functioning. On the other hand, big government, which so many liberals simply adore, represents a usurpation of the allegedly inalienable rights of individuals. A quick perusal of the Constitution should convince you that beyond declaring war, forging treaties, overseeing patents, printing money, running the post office, collecting taxes and protecting our borders — and a few other things that Washington doesn’t do at all well these days — the federal government has very limited responsibilities.
Step #8: Acknowledge that the United Nations is, in the main, an aggregation of venal diplomats who live high off the hog in New York City while representing the most corrupt and vicious regimes in the history of the world. Only a fool or a diplomat would continue to suggest that this gang of well-dressed thugs possesses anything resembling moral authority.
Step #9: Do not keep insisting that at a time when nearly all the large scale evil in the world is being perpetrated by Muslims that racial profiling is anything but a sensible approach to airport security. During WWII, Swedish Americans were not suspected of performing espionage for the Axis powers and for a very good reason; namely, because they weren’t performing espionage for the Axis powers. These days, their Swedish American children and grandchildren are not suspected of trying to blow up airlines, but the smarmy bureaucrats insist on pretending that they’re every bit as likely to be up to mischief as a bunch of 25-year-old Osama bin Laden look-alikes from Yemen and Saudi Arabia.
Step #10: Stop trying to pretend that illegal aliens are the same as legal immigrants just so you can claim the moral high ground and accuse those of us who are opposed to open borders of being racists.
Step #11: Once and for all, stop forgiving murderers. Whether or not you’re in favor of capital punishment, only the victim of a crime has the right to grant forgiveness. And inasmuch as the killer has deprived his victim of that ability, don’t take it upon yourself. It doesn’t prove how compassionate you are, only that you’re as sanctimonious and as self-aggrandizing as, say, Jimmy Carter.
Step #12: Stop bashing the U.S. military and the Boy Scouts. The only reason you have the ability to shoot your mouth off is because men and women braver and better than you sacrificed life and limb for your right to do so. As for the Boy Scouts, they are absolutely right to keep homosexuals from taking youngsters on camping trips. While it’s true that many gays are perfectly fine people and that very few homosexuals are pedophiles, there’s no reason on earth to take unnecessary risks just so we can all prove how broadminded we are. For what it’s worth, as decent as most Catholic priests are, I wouldn’t let them take youngsters into the woods, either. It’s fine to be compassionate and understanding, but let the gays among us be understanding for a change and acknowledge that, every so often, common sense should trump political correctness.
And, finally, making this a baker’s dozen, Step #13: Let us all agree that while being a woman, a black, a Jew, a Catholic, a Mormon or even a gay, for that matter, should in no way preclude anyone from being elected president of the United States, none of those things constitutes a very good reason to vote for someone.

I should print this out and mail it to all of the liberals I used to work with who elected a known criminal as governor and rabidly supported an idiot for president. I doubt it would make a dent in their thinking though.
Wouldn't it be nice if more "minorities" viewed affirmative action the way that Clarence Thomas does?
My friend, you have just sinned against Otherthodox Liberal Theology. Expect to find yourself branded a heretic. Of course, you've also made total sense. Keep up the good work!
I love Clarence Thomas. He's my favorite judge. His opinions are true common sense conservativism. It makes me very irrate that liberals call him stupid. He's a brilliant man.
Okay, this is all well and good, but if I offer Obama a White Chip, should he come clean, will I be racist?
I concur, he has one of the most brilliant minds I've ever seen. People think he's an idiot or not paying attention to oral arguments because he very rarely asks questions, but there's a reason for that. He's more interested in hearing what the petitioners and respondents have to say than listening to the sound of his own voice. He's a facinating man. I had the pleasure of working on a case that was accepted by SCOTUS (we won a unanimous decision) and I was enormously pleased that Justice Thomas delivered the decision.
That must have been really cool. I haven't been before the SCOTUS, but I've been before state S.C. courts several times (once last week in fact), and I think people often underestimate how smart many of these top judge are. And when you read the decision Thomas has authored, you can't help but see how bright, clever and decent this man is. If every judge was like him, the system would be perfect!

Great stuff Burt. I concur with the others, Clarence Thomas does indeed have a beautiful mind.
I do
Traitor is another word they use for CT…and other black non-liberals (Larry Elder, Herman Cain, Thomas Sowell)
It's the liberal judges that are sympathetic to criminals that give all judges a bad name.
I'm always impressed when I read the lectures/speeches he's given as well. Have you read his memoir? If not, I highly recommend it, its a facinating read. Even the biography "Supreme Discomfort" shows what an amazing person he is, warts and all. My next Amazon purchase will be Holzer's compilation of his opinions (anyone wanna buy me a Kindle 2?). What that poor man had to go through for his confirmation speaks to the worst of our society.
Unfortunately, we will all be considered racist, bigoted, homophobic, etc. fill in the _____. However, I for one will not be defined by anyone, much less a group of so-called 'higher moralists" with unforgivably base ethical conduct. Calling a chair a leg does not make the name fit, but calling the lib who tried to pin you with that moniker a micro encephalitic, moronic, deficit loving, ethically devoid brutalizer of truth and common sense with atrophied sensibility and incompetent abilities; well, color me truthful. Because I can prove all that, and even more.
I did read it, it's fascinating. I agree on what he went through, it absolutely disgusted me — made me ashamed of our Congress.
Correction on Step 10: They are "undocumented workers," not illegal anything. How dare you!
To the extent you mean judges who find new rights to protect nasty, guilty people (and usually don't extent the same courtesy to the innocent) I agree. But I think too many conservatives lose track of the fact that the "technicalities" are there to protect the innocent — you and me — from government overreach. I think most people would be shocked to discover how much the judicial system is stacked against the accused and how blind prosecutors can be to issues of guilt or innocence (especially around election time).
I'm especially down with #13. Had a hard time explaining that to a girl in one of my college classes in 07. She didn't want people to vote against Obama just because he's black, and then went off saying how great it would be to have a black president. I tried explaining her the reverse–that people shouldn't vote for him just because he IS black–and somehow that didn't make much sense to her.
I wouldn't even have a problem with a gay president, so long as he knew his role as a steward of the Constitution and didn't try to overturn Prop 8. Statistics show that a lot of gays are pretty smart with money anyway, so whatever.
I did read it, it's fascinating. I agree on what he went through, it absolutely disgusted me — made me ashamed of our Congress.
Great job on all 13 steps.
#14. The word, " Change" isn't always good. But conservatives don't believe change is always bad.
Some things need to be changed. Some don't. Traditional isn't always a negative word, either.
Talk about a good week here at BH. We had 2 "Celebutards" and 2 Prelutsky's! In addition to all the Rush discussions. If only Lorne Michaels had shown up respond to Crowder. Gonna be hard to top.
By Executive Order, the President has signed Directive 10-289 into law.
Press Release to be sent to all the MSM as soon as possible.
Thank You.
This is so true on so many levels. I completely agree – I've discussed some of these issues myself:
"Are you filthy rich? Do you feel guilty about it? I challenge you to write a check for the amount you feel you were undertaxed and send it to the IRS. I'm sure you'll feel much better after you do."
http://conservativelyprogressive.blogspot.com/200...
The media is absolutely no longer objective – when the most hardest hitting journalistic endeavor is the fact that the President is going gray and when they try to make money off of selling T-shirts with with own pretentious headlines embossed on them, something is wrong:

Excellent post, well written, very easy to understand, so easy a liberal could get it! (maybe!)
This needs to be posted in every college classroom in bold print. So every time a professor goes into some tirade and starts generalizing any mistake by one into proof of the whole a student can call him or her on it.
We need to start reading the Constitution and the Bill of Rights as they are actually written and quit trying to interpret intent. Intent is code word for we don't like what it actually says so we've come up with a way to try and change it's meaning, that's where we jump the tracks.
The 2nd amendment has been under assault for quit some time. When will this end, when will we just read the words and accept them as proof positive because it is stated. Our fore fathers wanted us to have weapons. For a very specific reason an armed nation keeps government in check when all of the other checks and balances don't work out.
This post was hilarious! I have to say, though, that you'll never get liberals aka "progressives" to take steps on their own required to transform them back into rational beings, at least without a serious intervention. If you want them to trick them into taking life altering "steps" of any kind, first you'll need to entice them to meet someone for the purpose of self-improvement (in that sense you won't be lying) by luring them to take advantage of a free service like an enema, aroma therapy, or a demonstration of the new reusable wipes. Once you get enough of them into the "clinic," lock all the doors, and then separate them into individual padded rooms. After you've kept them apart for minimum 3 weeks, you can gradually begin to reintroduce rational thought, but honestly it will take years to really get through to them.
You know, I find your posts extremely insightful. Even when I disagree, I have to really make an effort to formulate an appropriate response. I agree about the problems in the judicial system. Here in Illinois, we've had enormous problems with people spending long years in jail, and even facing the death penalty on flimsy (and sometimes invented) evidence. We also have an enormous problem with father's rights in child custody cases. It's actually written into the law that no visitation with your child is guaranteed, you have to hire a lawyer and fight for whatever you can get (which is usually at the discretion of a judge, who may or may not be an idiot).
Maybe it's the best system in the world, but that doesn't mean it's not in serious need of an overhaul..
I had a Liberal freak out on me once over calling them "illegal aliens." He/she said that a person can't be illegal. I tried (very slowly, with small words) to point out that a person can't be an "alien" either. It's a state of residence, therefore quite easily can be illegal.
My husband went about it the other way. His coworkers kept going on and on about how wonderful and historic it would be to vote for the black guy, and he shut the whole table up by loudly announcing that he was going to vote for the old, white guy.
You know, if it requires brainwashing and torture to make someone believe what passes for conservative ideas around here, maybe there's something wrong with the ideas.
Prior to everything else you must find a way to get a new sense of humor installed or else nothing you do will ever get any liberal cured. See exhibit WR1 above.
When you disagree? (sniff, sniff, wipes away tear) Just kidding, thanks Des. You always make good points too — always thoughtful.
I agree that the entire system needs to be re-examined. The system costs too much, it's too easy for people to sue anyone, innocent people get crushed but the guilty have learned to manipulate the system, judges have too much discretion, etc. etc.
There are many changes that can be made to improve the system, but neither side wants to make those changes for fear of upsetting their voters. In fact, when changes are proposed, they are usually proposed by people (left, right or corporate) with a specific agenda that is not good for the rest of us. Also, too many people like the system the way it is because they are afraid of change or they view it as a guarantor of employment.
Burt — Brief…Blunt…Brilliant.
Although I'm sure there are more, these simple rules could be written on notecards and carried around in their empty suit pockets …
Working with the Boy Scouts as frequently as I do, I gotta tell you…I don't recall either seeing or signing a document in which I swore or affirmed I wasn't a homosexual. The subject simply doesn't come up, unless someone demands the right to be vocal about their sexual preferences.
The simple fact is, heterosexuals aren't encouraged to discuss OUR sexual preferences with the kids, either. The subject of sexuality just isn't intended to be brought up. It's not in our job description. That discussion can be handled in other venues – by parents, one hopes – in whatever way they see fit quite without our assistance, thank you very much.
[...] for Andrew Breitbart’s BIG HOLLYWOOD, Burt Prelutsky gives us a gem of a plan to reconstitute the Liberal mind. 12 Steps to be exact. Although I’m sure there are more, these simple rules could be written [...]
I'm with you on that one. I haven't appeared before the Supreme Court since I lost a case about the railroad pension of a retired California client whose earnings and marriage (the subject of the divorce case) had been in Michigan. Warren Burger and the gang. I've been retired for over eighteen years now, and I'll never have the pleasure of appearing before Justice Thomas. I have great admiration for Roberts, Alito and Scalia, but Justice Thomas goes farther than any of them in his use of original intent and natural law growing out of the Declaration of Independence as it is incorporated in the Constitution. Justice Thomas's views on affirmative action fit nicely into what Mr. Prelutsky is saying in his Step 2.
Corruption of our future major political leaders begins at the local level. Sadly, are judicial system is horribly broken — if I woke up and found myself in charge of this country tomorrow, the first thing I would do would be to reform the criminal justice system — no plea bargains, every case goes before the jury, every single defendent, whether he/she is found guilty or not, gets a competent defense, not some overworked public defender who just wants to clear cases off his desk, there would be no bonus in the paycheck of the DA who wins a case. A defendant , expecially one who is accused of a sex crime or murder, where the punishment is death or an cruel half-lifem should be allowed a no-holds barred defense, exculpatory evidence can NEVER be excluded, and the right to cross examine his accusers/witnesses in the courtroom is sacrosanct.
Game. Set. Match.
Clean House in 2010 or we are destined for America's Second Civil War.
Thoughts on Justice Scalia? More recomended reading: Scalia's "Making Your Case: The Art of Persuading Judges," "Scalia Dissents" (he does his best work in dissents imo) and Judge Richard Posner's "How Judges Think" (also has a brilliant mind).
Scalia is my second favorite, though I sometimes think he's a little too theoretical. I agree about his dissents, those are some of his best opinions — he never dances around anything!
In my opinion, Bush should have appointed Posner as his first pick, though he has at times offended many on the right with some of his stances.
I agree. Retired 18 years? So you were practicing during the Rose Bird years? I recall my professors also calling the 9th Circuit (from that period) the "Acid Circuit".
Hmmm.. moderators are having fun tonight. Wonder if they objected to me asking to have your babies or my referencing Robert Bork. Go figure.
And we referred to the state court as Rose Bird and the Supremes. Even as a liberal, I couldn't stand her. My gang called the 9th Circuit the 9th Shortcut. Fastest way to get perfectly good verdicts reversed on totally ridiculous grounds. I retired from the legal profession in my forties to go into labor relations. I'm not actually all that old, but sometimes it does seem like I'm talking about ancient history. So here I am in San Francisco, looking back at my years in Malibu, Beverly Hills and, yes, Hollywood. Worst of all, compared to this town, Hollywood look downright conservative. Think I'll move back to L.A. and become a burden to my daughters.
Wouldn't it be great if each of us could convince a liberal we know to take even one of these steps? It would certainly be as beneficial to society as convincing a admitted alcoholic never to drive while drunk.
Liberals are a treasonous and seditious cancer on America and must be removed or this great nation will not survive in any meaningful way. Liberals are going cause another civil war in this country soon, well then, maybe something good will actually come from liberalism after all, seeing as how the decent, patriotic normal people have the guns and know how to use them. I can't wait!!
Every true patriot should watch the Yuri Bezmenov interview videos from the mid 80's, they are a must see, and shocking. A former KGB officer, he defected to America, and he shows and tells all on how the KGB infiltrated our media and schools and how they use the useful idiot liberals to literally destroy America from within. You can see what he talks about coming to fruition in America right as we speak.
http://video.google.com/videosearch?hl=en&ie=...
Not bad, but he and many others miss the boat on tax deductions. You all cling to your mortgage deduction and scream "hands off my 401k" when the fact remains that both are bones tossed to you by the Government benevolent despot to distract you. Don't be a sucker – stay focused on the overall tax rates, and the out of control spending.
Scalia is my first favorite and Thomas is my second. But that may be because I do mostly legal research and spend very little time actually in Court.
Burt
How about 3 steps instead ?
1. FInd some good candidates.
2. Drum up money and support for them.
3. Elect them and remove the idiots in place.
Just a thought…………………………….
LOL! Must be the Bork reference, he is persona non grata after all (or "persona non grande" as a friend of mine use to say)!
Rose Bird and the Supremes! That's funny. So is the 9th Shortcut!
No one said one word about brainwashing or torture. Another straw man argument, always popular with the left, vapid and vacuous to anyone who has critical thinking skills. But keep posting you are the perfect example of the level of intelligence of those who follow the socialist leaders of this country. Ted Kennedy, Nancy Pelosi, John Murtha, Dick Durbin, Charles Rangel, Harry Reid and Charles Schumer think their constituents are too stupid and too driven by your emotions to see what their real agenda is and you are the proof.
I like this guy. thing is, you could slightly rephrase every one of those thirteen comments and turn them against neocons.
Talk about an unfairly maligned and castigated man. Well all I was saying was that since Posner had pissed off both sides, he was less likely to be treated the way Bork and Thomas were (I had used Bork's name as a verb in my previous post).
Gosh Bert, must have taken you hours to build all those strawmen. But congratulations on dispatching them so efficiently!
Say, how's the Hollywood writing career going? Anything since that M*A*S*H episode way back in the 20th?
You're a pretty poor troll. Too much jealousy in your post. Plus, we can see you're full of it by clicking on Burt's bio. Man, you can't even spell.
Go back to McDonalds, your shift manager needs you to clean the toilet.
And you've written what when?
The answer is nothing ever.
You don't know what the term strawmen means either.
You're welcome.

Truthier words were never spoken, Burt.
"Step #11: Once and for all, stop forgiving murderers. Whether or not you’re in favor of capital punishment, only the victim of a crime has the right to grant forgiveness." At the risk of sounding trollish, I would think every Christian on this site would disagree with this notion. I'm not a Christian but I am a conservative, so it's rather odd to see such a statement go unchallenged. I find third-party forgiveness obscene, so I'm glad you made the case. As for the pejorative use of the term "big," an excellent point.
Awesome post. And right on. Common Sense! You speak it sir!
You know its funny this troll cannot debate Mr. Prelutsky on what he wrote, he merely attacks him personally. Gee Blarty is that all you have? No wonder you people are too stupid to know what exactly you are voting for. You don't even know yourself. I went over to Huffpo for the first and last time not too long ago. Staggered at the blatent outight dumb a**ery going on there. Why? Not one post on policy or an issue. A whole lot of wasted bandwidth on psychotic emotional babble. Blarty moron you need to go back there and stay with the other psychopaths. PLEASE!
BEST. POST (on this site). EVER!
Apprentice soda jerks?
Speaking of 12-step groups, have you read "Americans Anonymous"?

"Hello, my name is Eric, and I'm an American."
"HELLO, ERIC!"
"I used to be embarrassed to admit I carried a U.S. passport, and ashamed in turn to be embarrassed about that. These dark secrets led to feelings of guilt and to a vicious cycle from which I couldn't escape. That's when I discovered AA (Americans Anonymous)… Thanks to this 12-step group, and to the fellowship of like-minded people, I have learned true humility. I have had to face up to the truth. The sad and uncomfortable truth. I now realize that as Americans, we cannot, and never will, measure up to Europeans (among others) in the areas of honesty, generosity, tolerance, solidarité (en français dans le texte), clear-mindedness, humanitarianism, infinite wisdom, true democracy, world peace, and the love of one's fellow man." …/…
