Gran Issue Approaching
by Brett JoshpeLeave it to the out of touch boneheads in Hollywood to exclude the best movie of the year, “Gran Torino” with Client Eastwood, from it best picture nominations. If you have not seen it yet, then you should before Sunday’s Academy Awards-if for nothing else, to see what Hollywood missed. While there is nothing overtly political about the movie, I am convinced there is something below the surface, something a little too Americana for the Academy’s liking. And while watching the movie, I could not help but feel reminded of the explosive immigration issue that will surface again soon.
To make that reminder more poignant, a recent U.S. Joint Forces Command report warns of a “rapid and sudden collapse” in Mexico because “the government, its politicians, police and judicial infrastructure are all under sustained assault…by criminal gangs and drug cartels.” In other words-to cut through the political correctness-America has a third world nation on its southern border that is compromised by corruption and violence and an implosion would likely cause teams of illegal immigrants streaming into southern U.S. states.
Officials estimate that there are approximately 12 million illegal immigrants already in the U.S. Although many immigrants add richness and diversity to our society-and provide economically valuable services-illegal immigration costs taxpayers billions of dollars annually for healthcare, education, criminal enforcement and incarceration. The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) approximated that the cost to California alone is $10.5 billion per year.
While the economics can be debated, perhaps far more disturbing about America’s immigration problem is the refusal of governments-federal and certain local-to protect Americans’ safety. The federal government under the Bush administration did not take border security particularly seriously, and although erection of a fence along the U.S.-Mexican border is in progress, the pace reveals little urgency. Amnesty advocates argue that the security fears are overblown, as there are no “known” terrorists who have entered the U.S. across the southern border.
Security goes far beyond terrorism, however, and the fear that certain illegal immigrant gangs have instilled in their communities and the reluctance of particular locales to cooperate with federal officials in reporting illegal immigrant criminals is inexcusable. In a 2004 article for the Manhattan Institute’s City Journal, Heather MacDonald reported that a staggering 95 percent of all outstanding homicide warrants in Los Angeles and two-thirds of fugitive felony warrants target illegal immigrants. The Justice Department’s National Gang Intelligence Center conducted a study that concludes gangs-which are mostly comprised of illegal immigrants-are responsible for up to 80 percent of crime in America.
There are horror stories like the one that prompted the proposed “Jamiel’s Law,” named after a 19 year old from Los Angeles who was murdered by an illegal immigrant gang member who had already served prison time for a handgun violation but was back on the streets rather than turned over to federal authorities and deported. The Los Angeles City Council refused even to debate “Jamiel’s Law,” which would have denied illegal immigrants amnesty and required enforcement of existing federal law. However, cities like Los Angeles, Houston, Washington D.C., and New York-often referred to as “sanctuary cities”-not only refuse to enforce federal law, they actively flaunt it, prohibiting city officials from cooperating with federal officials or revealing illegal immigrant status.
Amnesty advocates raise a host of red-herrings in arguing for why sanctuaries are necessary, such as encouraging cooperation by illegal immigrants with police. They argue that attempts to secure the borders, enforce the law, and crack down on illegal immigration are racist. While conservatives should not push for a massive federal round-up of millions of illegal immigrants, which would cost far too much money and entail too great an administrative burden, ensuring a secure border and instituting deportation proceedings for all illegal criminals should be conservative prerequisites for immigration reform, and voters are likely to agree.
A 2005 Zogby poll found that Democrats, blacks, women, and households with less than $75,000 in income are most opposed to illegal immigration. This is the kind of law and order policy, similar to the crackdown on crime in the 1980’s, that could enable conservatives to establish a pro-active social agenda in the new Democratic government and attract new voters to the conservative cause.
Politics aside, however, securing the border and enforcing the rule of law entails promoting one of the most important conservative principles of all: defending the American identity and all that it means. It is no surprise that Hollywood would devalue that message.

Racist! Just thought I'd throw it out there before anyone else does. Michelle Malkin has been highlighting the criminal deeds of illegals for a long time, now.
There are plenty of legal immigrants that come here to be Americans, because of what, sadly many have forgotten, that means.
It is high time we finish building the wall and promote legal immigration and enforce laws against illegal immigration.
In the suburb of Dallas where I grew up, law inforcement began to crack down on illegal immigration a few years ago. Whenever someone is stopped for a traffic violation or arrested for whatever, they check on the immigration status. Anyone who cannot prove they are legal is turned over to the INS. Since this started crime has gone down 60 percent.
BO has no stomach to turn away future Democratic voters. This problem will not be addressed but will accelerate.
Would YOU live in Mexico if you sneak up here? I don't think so.
What in the hell does Gran Torino have to do with any of this?
Hey, Brent…I know that you were so excited to rant about immigrants, but at least spellcheck your blatherings before you post.
It's CLINT Eastwood, you moron, not CLIENT Eastwood.
Zw how does a brain cramp feel? It's Brett not Brent.
Immigrants! Even when it was the bears, I knew it was them

Everything she did (and didn't) do was about miss-direction. She never intended to use the National Guard for anything on the border other than to secure federal funding. One of her proudest 'accomplishments' was securing a faux trade treaty with the state of Sonora. Her sole intent on signing stiff employer penalties was to focus her Attorney General to get the state supreme court to gut them on the down low – or better yet – get an unconstitutional ruling (thankfully unsuccessful).
It was right on down the line through her tenure – and she was first among western governors to support Obama.
She has already joined with John Conyers & Attorney General Holder to try and get the Justice Dept to indict Arpaio on racial profiling.
It's all about placating the Hispanic left amnesty advocates – and the march to 'grow' Democrats. Well see how well it plays with even the most ardent supporters. Good Article Brett.
How long have you suffered brain cramps? It's Brett
The Academy likes to see themselves or their potential in the nomination process. There was no way they were going to validate Eastwood's character with a nomination. After all, this is a character that throws around racial pejoratives like pennies. He changes his ways, but not in the 180 degree turn Hollywood wants to see. Knowing that he is dying anyway, he chooses to go out his own way, but is not able to renounce the use of guns and violence beforehand. Of course, he got away with using guns to get what he wanted in the end and there is no way Hollywood will reward that kind of behavior. People will say what about "Unforgiven," but that was a period film not a contemporary like GT.
Steve Mason's article awhile back stuck with me – about how the Academy Awards are losing audience share because they continue to nominate movies for which most people haven't seen – or care to see. I think Gran Torino was once of the best – perhaps the best – movie of 2008. Well, the Dark Knight was up there, too.
Charge him with one count of being a bear, and this guy with one count of being an accessory to being a bear.
The Nye Mets are my favorite baseball squadron…
Unforgiven was so magnificent, even the Academy had to get it.
Walt Kowalski mowed his own lawn.
(And with a planet-friendly reel mower!)
Sadly, the most powerful advocates of illegal immigration are businesses and wealthy individuals. The businesses (the unscrupulous ones, anyway) need the cheap labor and are pleased when sanctuary cities look the other way. The wealthy individuals prefer their maid services and yard workers priced just the way they are, thank you.
Hopefully the Republicans can take the populist approach to the problem suggested in this article, as relying on their bread and butter, businesses, may be the wrong tack.
Not to be a ninny, but it's Flout" the law, not "flaunt".
The movie already made enough money. And people in Clint's demographic arent the type ot buy DVD's of a movie they've already seen Clint do a half-dozen times before. As always with this blog, you've reachd your conclusions because "you have a feeling." Why not have some facts or at least speak with a single source before presenting your opinion as fact. But hey, where's the fun in that?
I presume you're talking about Napolitano. Obama actually did us a favor when he hired her away from the governorship — she's being replaced by a Republican, Jan Brewer… who knows how closely her constituents are watching.
I refuse to watch the Oscars.. It's a joke. I did see this movie and LOVED it, have been recommending it to everyone.
Michelle Malkin rocks…
I agree, “Gran Torino” is a great movie, that as a consumer mind you. I recommend that Hollywood get their nose out of the Bamster’s fanny, and make movies that Americans actually want to see, perhaps even an original thought? My wife and I used to see a movie a week, last year we saw perhaps a half dozen. I know that this anecdotal, but this has to effect the bottom line, after all movies are a business, right?
As far as Illegal Immigrants. I’ve written my congressional representatives on several occasions to please supply a list of laws that I as a tax paying legal citizen can ignore, but to no avail. I know that that’s a bit sarcastic but true, they have our rights and a get out of jail free card that has no expiration date. Well enough said it’s time to get to work, “millions on welfare depend on it!”
Gran Torino is a spot on movie about today's blending of society. In Milwaukee my mom's old neighborhood is primarily Laotians now except for the old Polish die-hards. The movie doesn't focus on the illegal immigration aspect, and it shouldn't. The cultural differences are the best part of the movie as it shows the strength of both sides. Some of it may not be believable, but its a solid story. Shame that Hollywood won't recognize it for what it is.
I saw 'Taken' over the weekend, mostly because critics panned it and the movie goer really liked it. About half way through, Liam Neeson says something to the bad guy Albanians about taking advantage of France's tolerance. I immediately knew, as Albanians are a little darker than whitey, why the critics panned it. I give it two thumbs up for anyone but a white liberal.
The Academy Awards Jumped the Shark years ago.
i cant wait til this comes out on dvd or ppv! this is one of the few rare movies that i have the desire to watch.
Fucking Albanians. They said that us Serbs were raping Albanian women during the war, but what Serbian man would even think about touching one of those hair lipped monstrosities? No, you cannot rape an Albanian woman. If you tried she would just give it up anyway.
One of the central American questions today is what do you do when bangers move into your neighborhood to colonize it?
Looks like Eastwood is one of the few in Hollywood who has the cajones to address it. Walt Kowalski's point of view is as American as it gets.
Gran Torino was an outstanding achievement on many levels. I could have told you the left would despise it – I recommended it to several 20somethings I know in LA who work in the film industry – they called it "racist" without even seeing it. The movie turns left-wing stereotypes on their heads, and that's why they hate it. The older, white, male veteran is supposed to be the uptight-and-clueless character, who gets "schooled" by the wisdom of the younger person-of-color. The priest is NOT a pedophile (!). And when the older, white, male, Christian veteran takes out his weapon, it doesn't accidentally go off and kill or injure an innocent bystander, thus "proving" that private ownership of guns should be outlawed. What kind of movie is this? My kind of movie!
The amazing thing is that many Hollywood writers actually believe that they are being "cutting edge" and "courageous" when they put characters like the pedophile priest and greedy Army general or the clueless, fumbling straight white male in their movies! I know this seems incredible, but it's true. In their tiny little brains, an Army general (for example) is "supposed" to be honest and patriotic. To the, that's the "stereotype." So what they do is "think out of the box" and flip the stereotype, and invent a character who is a general but he is also a thief and a liar and a conspirator who plots with a corporate CEO to steal lots of money. Then they pat themselves on their backs for their "courage" in flipping an old stereotype.
"what do you do when bangers move into your neighborhood to colonize it?"
I guess white flight doesn't cut it anymore, huh?
