Hollywood Should Pledge Its Money Where Its Collective Mouth Is
by Brett JoshpeGo to YouTube and type in, “I Pledge” for the latest insufferably, self-important pat on its own back courtesy of Hollywood. The video montage is Tinsletown’s way of pledging fidelity to Barack Obama and letting him know that…”You’re Not Alone!” Because while Iran scurries to acquire a nuclear weapon and the economy falters, Demi Moore pledges to smile more (and “to be a servant to our President”), Eva Longoria pledges to laugh more, Cameron Diaz pledges to learn her neighbors’ names, and Jason Bateman pledges to save the planet by only flushing after a deuce. Give Barack Obama credit for one thing: he seems to have woken the consciousness of an entire class of people who are out of touch and inspired them to demonstrate how they are completely and utterly out of touch.
But heck, Hollywood, good for you guys. You have finally realized that you are Americans too, and you can once again attend overseas premieres with pride, rather than the shame of citizenship under the Bush administration. While you are at it, maybe you could pledge to make Khalid Sheikh Mohammed smile and love more too. That guy could use a hug and an environmentally friendly toilet. And since you are looking to pitch in now and to “turn the lights off,” “trade in your obnoxious car and buy a hybrid,” and “drive slower,” I have a few other ideas for how you might be able to help. Please, forgive me if these suggestions may seem a little punitive, perhaps counter-productive, but this is a time for sacrifice and a time to embrace the collective, selfless philosophy of Democrats and The One.
Until Republicans acted this week, the Senate was actually prepared to bestow hundreds of millions of dollars of stimulation for Hollywood. The “Hollywood clause” would have given movie studios special tax breaks and enabled them to depreciate the costs of production equipment at a quicker rate. Perhaps, however, Congress should consider reinserting that provision. Doing so would give us the perfect excuse to impose the types of compensation controls on the movie industry that President Obama is now demanding of other industries who receive federal help.
Unlike the greedy Wall Street executives though, who have torpedoed our economy by allowing federal bureaucrats to bludgeon them into making bad loans, Hollywood would surely understand the merit of pay caps. After all, it would enable the entertainment world to fulfill its pledge “to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves but each other.” (Cut for laughter and gagging and take two!)
But seriously, for the people who are leading the environmental movement and spearheading efforts to turn the Academy Awards green, cut back on the number of SUV’s in their entourage, and demonstrate frugality to Al Gore, this is such a great opportunity to demonstrate restraint and help out the new President. What better way to show solidarity with Democrats who want to impose a command and control economy and to confiscate wealth from the rich. Especially since everyone needs to make sacrifices right now. Not to worry though, Steven Spielberg and crew, it will feel patriotic.
As such, we should cap the compensation that movie studios and Silver Screen stars make, particularly given the wealth disparities between the actors and actresses and the grips, stagehands, and extras. While there will be times for profits, this is not that time, especially when people are losing jobs and the Golden State’s $40 billion budget deficit is bigger than most countries’ total economic GDP.
It so refreshing to see Hollywood stars embracing this new America. They are just in time to put their dollars where their mouths are and to start fulfilling their pledge.

If CEOs are greedy for making so much, then why don’t these people nip it in the bud and voluntarily give up any of their money beyond that magic 500K mark? “I Pledge” to take no more than my “fair share.” After all, their movies fail as much if not more than any of them make it.
“…Iran scurries to acquire a nuclear weapon….”
Repeat a LIE often enough, eh? This is on par with the lies that led up to the very profitable (for some, costly for real American’s though) war on Iraq. No evidence Iran is pursuing a nuclear weapon….meanwhile we know the terrorist state of Israel (founded on terrorism – that is FACT) has many. Israel destabilized the region by having WMDs – I wish Iran were getting one – we need someone to balance out this rogue, troublesome country.
I hadn’t considered a cap on actors’ salaries. Perhaps the government could institute a policy that the celebutards should pay a fine every time they talk about how tough times are for them because they can only afford ONE home that could probably be sold to buy Darfur (could they take a depreciation on that?). Every time they rubbed their affluence in the face of the people who support them, they would have to cut a check to offset the Federal Defecit. I figure we’d have it paid off by August, even with the bailouts.
They could pay in monthly installments like a true patriot and give Tom Daschle a good example to follow. Besides, didn’t Vice President Biden say it was patriotic to pay taxes?
And maybe the studios might have the “stars” and Big Name Directors bet their multi-zintillion dollar paychecks against the immediate success of a movie, payable to the studios (who then wouldn’t need to ask for a bailout). The entire cast of “The Spirit” would probably be demonstrating their super-powers of “super sizing” a food order right now.
I propose a cap of $500,000 in income an actor can make a year. The rest will be given to ACORN and people who don’t pay taxes. We gotta, you know, spread the wealth around. Put up or shut up Socialists…
Oh, what a happy day it would be to see caps on celebrity salaries. I wonder how long it would be before the “I Pledge” video got removed from youtube. Until then, I think the I Pledgers could really help the Prez out with at least one of his campaign promises by offering their second and third homes as housing for the Gitmo crowd. They can practice smiling and have lots of fun commiserating with their houseguests on what a crap country this was – until it became Obamaland, that is.
To Trent: You took a wrong turn somewhere. The Big Teheran propaganda board is elsewhere. I hear you get 42 virgins for posting there. Good luck.

I love it – let’s cap actors’ pay at $500,000, just like the execs at our quavering financial institutions. Send the rest of the $20mm per film directly to the Treasury. I’m certain Mr. Geithner will figure out what to do with it!

What an anti-semitic tool. Er, the main subject was Hollywood pay caps and you turn one line into a anti-Israel rant. Liberal Jews in America should be proud of the peril they’ve helped place the rest the Jewish world in. Another reason to cap Hollywood big-wig paychecks. As for me, I stand arm and arm with Israel and will defend them to the death against those would try to repeat the atrocities of WWII.
It’s amazing how Demi Moore can throw her voice and make it look like Ashton is actually talking. The real question though is how does she get he hand up his narrow butt to move his mouth.
Biden says that paying taxes is patriotic. If that is the case why don’t the democraps being appointed by the Messiah pay theirs.. Is it because they are unpatriotic???? Want another shocker Sen. Harry “am I still alive” Reid say paying taxes is VOLUNTARY. Check it out by cut and paste.

“I pledge to no longer support the crappy entertainment industry.”
Saving a ton of money by making conscious choices on the type of entertainment I purchase. It’s a wonder the entertainment industry can survive. I mean, 80 percent of the music, movies and television out there is not just liberal dribble but horrible liberal dribble that’s not entertaining. These so called artist and there crap work actually makes it easy for me to save my money.
@Ulises Jorge
I just joined the Facebook group. Hope it catches on.
I am totally against government regulating or capping anyones wages. However, I think government should cap the amount of wages that a company can write off $250K. So, when a studio pays an actor 40 million to star in Forrest Gump #2… they only get to write-off $250K and they eat $39,750,000 dollars. Same with sports figures and CEOs. Once the general public isn’t eating these big write offs (we get to make up the difference) I am guessing the salaried worth of these people would greatly diminish. Or make the studios amortize these high wages over many, many years.
After all, when I buy new equipment for my business, I have to amortize over a few years any purchase over a certain dollar amount.
Something else you should know about actors, they all have production companies and it is these production companies that gets paid, not them. This allows them to pay even less taxes and utilize more tax write-offs than you or I would.
The word I was looking for is “depreciate” not amortize. Letting business depreciate business equipment expense in the same year as it’s purchase would be a great stimulus,

“Nicholas Cage has stolen money from me 3 times….” HA! Just 3. He’s stolen from me for every movie I’ve seen him in after he was in Raising Arizona.
All of those hollyweed freaks should now pay 85% of the money they earn to their newly elected dictator to pay their tributes for being a loyal lap dog and mindless zombie
You can write off up to $250k this year using section 179 deduction. Up to that amount you can write-off 100%.
