Happy Birthday: Clint Eastwood Turns 80 Today
by Big Hollywood
In honor of Clint’s 80th birthday, TCM is airing a 24 hour birthday tribute today. You can see the schedule of films here. This includes a new documentary, “The Eastwood Factor,” by critic and documentary filmmaker Richard Schickel, who wrote an excellent biography of the screen icon in 1996.
Still a force behind the camera and a powerful, virile and bankable presence on screen, Eastwood’s a truly remarkable man in every sense of the word with one of the most interesting and diverse careers in the history of the medium. How many actor/directors move so effortlessly between pure popcorn entertainment like “Space Cowboys” and “The Gauntlet” to ”Bird” and “A Perfect World?”
Here’s a snippet from a TCM tribute. Be sure to read the whole thing and leave your birthday wishes for Clint in the comments:
1971 was a watershed year in Clint’s career in many respects. First, he made the film that he has long considered his personal favorite, Siegel’s unusual Gothic drama, set during the Civil War – The Beguiled (1971). Next, he got his distinguished directing career underway, and also played the lead role of a stalked disc jockey, in Play Misty For Me (1971). Finally, he put in his debut appearance as the Magnum-wielding maverick police lieutenant Harry Callahan in Siegel’s Dirty Harry (1971). The film made him a fixture in the crime action genre and paved the way for four more Callahan shoot-’em-ups (Magnum Force (1973); The Enforcer (1976); Sudden Impact (1983); The Dead Pool (1988)).
Eastwood’s touch continued to prove golden through the ’70s, whether he turned his attention to Westerns (The Outlaw Josey Wales(1976)), action/comedy (Every Which Way But Loose (1978)), or thriller (Escape From Alcatraz (1979)). By the mid-’80s, his marriage to Maggie had ended, and the environmentally conscious star was devoting attention to responsibilities like his two-year stint as mayor of Carmel, California. As the ’80s wound down, the director Eastwood continued to receive critical praise for personal projects such as Bird (1988) and White Hunter, Black Heart (1990), but his familiar star vehicles became less and less of a guaranteed draw.
The rumors of his professional demise were quickly squelched by the success of his revisionist western Unforgiven (1992), which landed Oscars® for Best Picture and Best Director.

He is really the last great "Movie Star".
Have a great one, Clint. Your talent has entertained a few generations. Hopefully you'll outlive another one. BTW, my youngest ( a way too smart 13 year old) gets a real thrill when she sees that young 'hottie' in old Rawhide reruns. Totally crushes her when I mention those shows are almost 50 years old.
Happy Birthday Mr. Eastwood, sir.
Clint Eastwood ~ A member of a rare breed ~ a Man's Man, and a Lady's Man, too.
Happy Birthday to a talented U.S. Veteran.
You don't look a day over 65.
Happy Birthday, Mr Eastwood, hope someone goes ahead and makes your day.
80 years old and and can still kick all of our a$$e$.
Happy birthday, Mr. Eastwood.
Clint Eastwood, subject of a million lady swoons and man crushes! Rock on!
Happy Birthday to "Dirty Harry." aka Clint Eastwood. You have entertained us since the days of Rawhide, my dad's favorite TV show back in the 50's. Mr. Eastwood, you have made our day! Thank you for all the great movies. You are a giant!
This guy rocked in Creature from the Black Lagoon!!! (or one of them classic monster movies) Went downhill from there…. JUST KIDDING!!! Awesome to see this kid come up and hand something to main character then walk off… Happy Birthday!
Clint Eastwood is an anagram for 'old west action.'
Oh we love the song by Big Audio Dynamite called Medicine Show in which you hear snippets of Mr. Eastwood from "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly". It's awesome. My kids now know it too. Named our ugly dog after the Ugly.. Tuco Benedicto Pacifico Juan Maria Ramirez.
and got no credit for leading the squadron that took down "Tarantula."

Eastwood is also a bit of a throwback to the old studio system, in that virtually all the key films he's made in the past 40-years have been part of his his association with Warner Brothers. In an industry nowadays where associations don't tend to last more than a decade at best, that's a pretty impressive run for one actor/director and one company.
With or Without Artillery…You'd better Get Off His Lawn. Happy Birthday Mr. Eastwood and many more of them.
I know what you're thinking. "Did he turn 80 or only 79?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this cake has almost two full 44-packs of Magnum Birthday Candles, the most powerful candles in the world, and you would have to blow so hard to put 'em out your head came clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?
Many happy returns of the day, Mr. Eastwood.
Kudos to Joan; great post; "it made my day"
Eastwood is THE MAN.

Happy Birthday, Blondie. "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" is one of the best ever.
Happy Birthday Clint! A fixture in my life, a true star.
Great call, I love that movie!! Happy 80th Birthday Clint!!
Dear Big Hollywood admins: Please go choke yourselves.
Dear T_Rav: Please take a long walk off a short pier.
Hey to rain on the parade. I have too enjoyed his movies but in real life he is apparently not a real good man.
From 1999-
"But now, a new book exposes the real man a violent, mean-spirited, tight-fisted serial philanderer who beat his first wife, conducted a string of affairs throughout his career, fathered several children outside of wedlock, forced two of his lovers, including long-time partner Sondra Locke, to have abortions. Pat Stacey reports Clint Eastwood always nurtured the image of a family man far removed from the anti-heroes he plays on screen. I would Sean Connery up there with Eastwood in that role.
Have a great one Clint. Sorry I missed seeing you at the Hogs Breath in Carmel years ago. Damn.. LOL
That's amazing!!
I have always been an admirer of your work, Mr. Eastwood. Happy b-day, best wishes, and many blessings.
Happy Birthday, Clint!
Check out this amazing clip from The Eiger Sanction, which highlights Eastwood's stunt work not to mention his awesome physique.
I particularly love the banter between him and Kennedy as he hauls himself up the rock face.
Happy birthday, Mr. Eastwood!
Happy Birthday C.E. I you didn't exist we have to invent you!
hey T.R. June 19th I'm 99% sure on the Carb Con. Can anybody verify?
Sorry. That was directed at the admins out of frustration over a deleted comment, not anyone here.
I agree. He's had an incredible professional career but there's little to admire about him otherwise.
Headem' up! Movem' out! Rawhide! Happy birthday, Rowdy! May the greatness of your acting and directing inflame the passions of the new crop of young thespians to blaze a trail of glory and stay on the right path.
'Kay. You can e-mail them, ya know.
I admire his acting ability–not his interpersonal relationship ability.
"I just cant remember if that was 79 or 80 birthdays, and in all the excitement I don't really remember, so punk you need to ask yourself a question do feel lucky, we'll do ya, punk . . ." Mr. Eastwood too many great movies to mention my two favorites are "Any Which Way But Loose," and "Where Eagles Dare."
Fair enough. Both in their 80's now. I think Connery retired to the Bahamas.
Hat's off to the two of them.
I am sitting here now watching Heartbreak Ridge, one of my favorite "Clints" along with Space Cowboys, Unforgiven, and the Dirty Harrys. Clint is truly one of the last of the great movie stars.
Here's a funny note: About 7 years ago, TVLand (when it was actually good) had a Mr. Ed telethon. I really got caught up in watching Ed round the bases and slide into home plate, Ed water skiing, Ed reading the paper with those big reading glasses. One particular episode stood out: Ed's phone wires got crossed with the new neighbors phone. The new neighbor was Clint Eastwood. Hilarious! Ed kept eavesdropping on Clint's conversations! I would love to ask Clint about his stint on Mr. Ed. LOL
Clint is THE MAN
[...] He’s 80? It seems like yesterday he uttered these [...]
EASTWOOD IS THE LAST OF THE BEST !!!!!!!!!!
Bird was the best biopic about a musician in cinematic history. When my dad took me to see Dirty Harry back when I was 13, I never would have guessed…
Not as long as Liz Taylor's still kickin.' ;-D
"Hey to rain on the parade."

Whenever someone says that, it really means they LOVE to rain on the parade.
Love your creative translation, though. "Hey! To rain on the parade,……."
Happy Birthday, Mr. Eastwood! You're one of a kind, a manly treasure.
Regardless of his private life which I really never knew about, Eastwood lost me permanently, moviewise when he made "Million Dollar Baby" which promoted assisted suicide as something good & that awful garbage "Mystic River" which seemed to bring together all the leftist wackos in Hollyweird together for a story which was utterly sickening. I haven't been to anything he's been involved with since. I still repect his early work, but don't like what his movies have since become. He moved too far left for my taste & his work has become too preachy with its leftwing slant & ideas.
Well, he was definitely one of them!
I'll bet you knew him as Rowdy Yates?
