BOX OFFICE FLOP: Matt Damon’s ‘Green Zone’ Could Open to Less Than $15 Million
by Big Hollywood
UPDATE: AP confirms: “Green Zone” opens to a dismal $14.5 million.
The moral of the story? If you’re going to trash America and the troops, use Smurfs.
Universal’s “Green Zone” became the latest Iraq War-themed movie to fall down the box office rabbit hole, debuting to just $5 million in the U.S. and Canada Friday, according to studio estimates. …
“Green Zone” could find little traction, getting out to a pace that will give it less than $15 million for its premiere weekend.
That would be even less than the modest pre-release expectations for the $100 million film, which reteams star Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass, who worked on the Universal’s last two “Jason Bourne” franchise installments. The film was put into production during the co-chair term of Marc Shmuger and David Linde.
Compare that to the opening weekend figures for the two previous collaborations between director Paul Greengrass and Damon:
Bourne Supremacy: $52.5 million
Bourne Ultimatum: $69.2 million
Gee, I wonder what the difference was?

G, I feel really bad for Matt…… poor guy……
"Gee, I wonder what the difference was?"
Wait… so you're saying there's a difference? Because I'm pretty certain that according to "Big Hollywood" the Bourne movies "hated America," too
Positive, negative, nobody wants to see "War on Terror" movies, but trying to make some kind of broad political read off of that is ridiculous: All the Iraq movies failed, yes, but so did World Trade Center and United 93 wasn't exactly a blockbuster. Even the nominally pro-military "Kingdom" didn't make tremendous bank.
Hard headed morons keep pushing anti-war films and wanting the audience to root against American troops.
If anything they have found a way to lose money. They're like "The Producers". Deliberately producing flops to cheat their big fat cat investors.
The non-green Green Zone, as it should be.
Mr. Damon,
I know your an over educated actor. That is ok. In America you can rise or fall to any height or depth you wish. Do you think it is time for you and others like you to send some time wearing the uniform before you trash it? One of my favorite actors is Jimmy Stewart. Mr. Stewart fought for this country in B-17's and B-24's and when the war ended he maintained his commitment to this country for as long as the Air Force would let him. Please consider a change of your views, America is wounded right now she needs all the help her citizens can muster – work on that, show your fellow citizens the good that protected you and your family and your friends, and provides you the capitalistic system to amass wealth and use it as you see fit. I've been all kinds of places; this country is one worth every ounce of your talented effort. Mr. Damon, you and I, will only be here for a blink of an eye – will your philosophy leave this nation in stronger state or a weaker one? Politicians have nary a night that they don't screw up – America is not about them, it's about the men and women who stand a sharp eye at a radar screen or sonar screen, man our mines, grow our food and heal the sick – please tell us those stories – so the young who watch your movies will see that striving for yourself is also striving for your Country.
Respectfully,
Joe
Not even deceptive marketing could save this film. These kind of movies don't make money. Plus Matt (outside of Bourne and the ensemble Oceans pics) is not a box office draw.
25 million people watched "The Path to 9/11". I'm sure it would be a big seller on DVD too whenever the Democrats decide to stop blocking its release.

I love the photo for this. Every time there's a Matt Damon (MATT! DAY! MON!) article, that's the go-to file photo.
Can hollywood put down the spoons long enough to look up and pay attention? If people want preachy dribble they're watch tv and tivo that so they won't waste their money or time.
Matt Damon. 5' 8 without high heels, 140 pounds, travels around the world for years unable to remember his own identity – yet I'm supposed to believe this is a ruthless, rough, tough killer who remembers years of dedicated martial arts. He lacks so much manly testosterone that growing stubble is a big chore.
The Bourne movies weren't promoted as anti-American films. This movie was a hopeful monster of a blockbuster openly advertised as anti-war propaganda — openly in that the propaganda couldn't be hid even in the tiny sound bytes of the trailer. I think the difference is telling. You could say that Damon and Greengrass thought they could spew their message successfully by fooling people into thinking this was just more Bourne. I guess the American audience isn't nearly as misinformed as they have to believe to live in their fantasy world.
This is big news to me because this movie was marketed big time, in a way that "World Trade Center" and "United 93" simply weren't. This is a $100 million film. It should have made more money with the money they were putting into it.
According to Pew and others, 40% are conservative, 30% are moderate, 20% are liberal; with the remaing 10% on the far left or far right. Hollywood's biggest mistake in making ideologically driven films is not accounting for the fact that the audience for such films is limited.
Damon will never again reach the heights he did in Team America, World Police.
Speaking of "The Path to 9/11", why doesn't a conservative in Hollywood release it as a theatrical production? I think a lot of people would go to see it in theaters. From what I remember of it on TV, it had good actors, good acting and told a factual story.
Lovely! Anyone with brains isn't surprised. Anti-American propaganda AND the WORST shaky-cam "director" around. That terrible director and self-righteous Libtard actor was enough to keep me the hell away. The Anti-American crap just adds to it and makes me laugh at its failure.
PS: I never get tired of that TEAM AMERICA: WORLD POLICE marionette! LMAO! "MAAAATT DAAAAMON!" Hahahaha!
Open for less than 15 million?
One could only hope……….
First the Oscars straighten up and shut-up, and 'Avatar' gets no love…
…now this leftist anti-military propaganda flick tanks…
…Nolte, you magnificent bastard !
Good luck with that advice!
I believe that's Matt Daemon. You can change your name, but not your spots.
And now, for my thoughtful analysis:
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Hey, Bobby…!!!
You got the call to drag yourself out from under the bridge for THIS…!?!??
I feel for you, guy…
I actually have World Trade Center…the only Oliver Stone movie I possess, simply because for one brief, shining moment, Stone grew up and allowed himself to be just a great director…
I even have all the Bourne stuff…waited until it went into the cheapie bin at Wallymart…they're nice as a governmental "zombie" picture, Treadstone and all…
Reminds me of all the Obamabots…except Bourne could actually prove to be competent at his tasks…
And yet they will probably make another one of these shitty things. At least we know they are honest about hating capitalism…wait no, theyre just stupid.
Another flop for Damon and the Libtards of Hollywood! To say I'm thrilled would be an understatement. I hope they have to close another movie studio over this (and I hope the people who lose their jobs decide to look up Matt about the way he promotes his films).
Wise -Up Matt Booby and get with the Red White and Blue Zone.
I thought this flick was supposed to be pro-troops but anti-politicians. Did the trailer misrepresent the film that much? Sounds like it won't be in theaters long enough for me to find out.
He was great in T.A. but he seemed a bit "stiff", I wonder if was injured doing a stunt?
"How 'Bout Them Apples" Matty!
The fact that you say it trashed the troops means you either havent seen the movie or you're just a plain idiot..or both. It does nothing but show how brave the troops are and what they have been going through. And the fact that over 30 soldiers were used in the actual movie show say a lot. But hey I guess you would called those soldiers un-american also right? I mean they are only brave and worthy of respect as long as they keep their mouths shut and say things that you dumbass conservatives want them too. When they the soldiers speak out against they war you turn on them too. Turning on the troops for speaking their minds..the biggest form of cowardness and the most un american thing you can do.
Check with the Dixie Chicks-they might come see your movie. It's not like they have anything else going on.
I disagree. I don't think he's ever been quite as lifelike as he was in Team America: World Police. It's his finest performance.
Oh no Matt Damon's movie tanked! I didn't see that coming at all….
Hey, Matt Damon! Do you like apples?
Isn't there some formula that reliably predicts a film's total box office based on the opening day grosses? If anyone remembers, what is the forecast for this turd?
United 93 cost 15 million and grossed 76 million. This is what we call a very good net profit. Green Zone cost 100 million. So if it makes 76 million then that means a lot of people lost their ass.
You liberals have such a difficult time with the idea of overhead, profits, costs, and the like.
This might answer your question:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yEUaa-k-5C0
Sorry Matt still does not want to date you LOL…
Matt, don't listen to these conservative bozos. The're not going to see your movies
anyway, particularly after you have staked your claim to your portion of Hollywood
world view of America. The only real concern you should have is will those moneyed
backers of your movies run out of cash before you have convinced everyone to view
the world as you do. Keep making sure you get yours and you could be like my hero M.Moore,
diminished returns have crimped his effort to carry on the battle but he is very wealthy.
That is what is important. If movie backing evaporates, it will happen, and you have increased your wealth
sufficently then you will have Huffpo and the many sympathetic newspapers to write of your disgust with this country. There is not much money in that but when you are wealthy enough its the message thats important.
Just one thing, Matt., keep working for salary as diminished returns are not good for percentages of gross.
/sarc./
Is it just me or is Matt Damon everywhere?
It's like the guy has a movie or some other project coming out every few months.
I think he should take a break for a while. I know some actors/actresses like to work and keep busy, but sometimes overexposure is not a good thing.
But I just checked the IMDB and Matt has at least six more movies in some form of production right now.
Dude, take a vacation!
; )
Maybe little Matty can ask Sarah Palin for a loan.
I was always impressed by how well he learned his lines!
Good news! Let's hope Damon and his pals mortgaged their houses to fund this latest agitprop POS.
So Matt Damon thinks that by going out and campaigning for BO we are just going to forget all that?….
and just openly support a marxist candidate for the Oval Office and then want the viewing public to see him as a believable character in a military-themed film?
And that the public will continue to view him favorably and go to his movies as though nothing happened?
Good grief, with thought processes like Damon's, heck, *I* could be Jason Bourne….
Oh wow great comeback. you really put me in my place. how will I ever recover. But thanks for taking time out of your hating on America to try and make me cry. It means a lot. Back to your tea party now.
Over 30! Wow! Imagine, over 30 of them.
Please please take a vacation. I'd like some movies to come out that I can actually see.
Except that the negative outnumber the positive, what 20 to one? Nominally, pro-military "Kingdom" – you mean the one with the sucker punch at the end showing us that we were no different than the savage terrorists that plant multiple bombs so as to kill the second responders – "kill 'em all". Yeah, that made me happy to shell out my 10 bucks. The audience doesn't see the what you claim are 'pro" war on terror movies because they don't know if they're gonna be sucker punched. and o
World Trade Center – about guys trapped in a building. Just what I want to spend my cash on. Made by Oliver Stone, who sure loves America, just not as much as Communist Cubans or Venezuelan dictators. And United 93 – with its pre-movie publicity about changing its screen message to be more "sensitive" and with Greengrass giving interviews left and right about how he didn't want to "take sides", but rather just wanted to show what people went through that day as they experienced it.
Not a single pro-war on terror movie there, MovieBob. Not the Hurt Locker either, with its psychopathic Colonels and its racist bomb team disposal members there. So, your "nobody wants to see War on Terror" movies" is really the same thing as "nobody wants to see War on Terror movies where the bad guys are not the bad guys and the good guys are not the good guys, but rather there's something more "complex" going on".
If Hollywood hasn't become Anti-American, it's sure doing its best impression and these so-called War on Terror movies provide the best examples.
OK. Now comes the part where he subtly blames Americans for not being smart enough to want to see his smart, smart film (like Alec Baldwin, Oliver Stone etc..have for their flops).
Maybe it will go directly to VHS?. Perhaps even Beta-Max?
Obama will watch it and love it and have the Daemon and the Greengasser over for a beer. He will give it the merda touch for sure.
Perhaps I misstated – he was very "real" and sooo "method" but physically a bit stiff. Maybe he wasn't in his beat conditioning for the shoot.
Why is there a Green Zone Advertisement on Big Hollywood?
They might want you to believe that, but our special forces are portrayed as evil, the soldiers who man the prisons in Iraq are portrayed as brutal, without morals and abusive to the prisoners and so on. All in all typical Hollywood portrayal of the troops. The only good troops are the ones rebelling and fighting against the evil United States.
Why not? let 'em spend, spend, spend to push this turkey.
Naw, keep it up til you've wasted ALL the production money in Old Hollywood.
Heh, couldn't have happened to a better Zinn'est. Wonder if he'll blame Middle America for his flop like Megan Fox did.
Maybe Obama will give a gift wrapped copy to Hamid Karzai – you know, something deeply felt and personal.
What this movie attempts to do is to permanently imprint on the public consciousness the leftist fabrication that the Iraq war was based on nothing more than cynical Bush admin lies.
While they're at it, we're supposed to root for a Ba'athis general-cum-insurgent leader, and root for terrorists to shoot down a chopper full of GIs.
In other words, just the sort of movie you and your fellow Code Pinko skanks would love, Amanda.
Mr. Damon who came out of nowhere with Good Will Hunting; he made millions and won an oscar in the country he is trashing should take heed…Only in America can a guy with two cents in his pocket and a dream can make it. In any other country, Matt Damon would be just an ordinary Joe with no future and beholding to the Government for his salary and no freedoms,,,,so when a guy like Damon takes it upon himself to be judge and jury of the soldiers who selflessly gave their lives for our country that gave him the best opportunity in the world, he dishonored our military and our nation and the movie will deservedly tank…and good riddance to it…If I had the opportunity, I would ask Mr. Damon one question, and that would be the following: "Could you make this movie in Cuba, Russia, China or any dictatorship? That's it Damon…if you can say yes, then go for it. But you can Mr. Damon…so stop trashing my country that my Uncle died fighting for. I will now boycott all his movies…
This movie is sounding worse and worse but that's making me more curious to see it.
Wow. I haven't seen the word "Beta-Max" in 20 years. LOL.
Amazing, little toy soldier tramps all over the sacrifices of those who defend our nation, and expects a a big payday for ridiculing their honor. Well just as I did with the Dixie Chimps, all my CD's of his movies went through the shredder, and I will not waste money on any project he is associated with, be it entertainment or other. If he chooses to trash America, he will not be doing it on my dime, nor will any associations that sees him as a spokesperson.
Hi, I'm Maaat Daaamon. I once read a book by Howard Zinn. That means I'm smarter than all of you.
If Maaat Daaamon really wanted to read a history book, he'd read "A Patriot's History of the United States" by Larry Schweikart. That book will blow your mind man. How you like dem apples?
P.S. Matt Damon runs like a girl. Watch the opening scene of "Bourne Supremacy" where he's running along the beach. It's pure comedy; and we're supposed to believe this guy is an action star?
Matt Damon as an actor and a human being falls in somewhere above Sean Penn but below Carrot top. In fact in comparison I'm not even being fair to Carrot top.
well hey why dont you and your anti american followers just have the war taken out of the history books just like Jefferson. We can pretend that nothing happened. That's what you people want dont you? if it doesnt go your way, make up lies and pretend.
Yes Americans were NEVER abusive to prisoners EVER. Americans are saints and never do anything wrong. We are perfect and it's the rest of the people in the world that does everything wrong. It must be nice living in your crazy reality.
an opening North American box office take of $15 million for "Green Zone" may be disappointing… but it scarcely justifies the word "flop". The actuals for the weekend are not in, the world box office has yet to be calculated, and it remains to be seen what kind of life this film has on a rental and DVD basis.
The fact that more Americans prefer Johnny Depp as a rather girlish Mad Hatter — at the moment — than Matt Damon in a film that explores the absence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, only serves to remind us that movies are not a good indicator of cultural maturity. On the other hand, maybe there is NO market anywhere for a book, film or tv program that tells people that their government has lied to them.

Awwwwwwwwwww.
Because it has happened means that it should be portrayed that way in the movies everytime? That all our soldiers deserve to be shown as the worst among them??
WHO WANTS TO SEE A FAKE IRAQ MOVIE LIKE THE HURT LOCKER. WHICH I SAW AND EVERY IRAQ VETERAN I KNOW SAID IT WAS FULL OF BALONEY! NOW WE HAVE DAMON WITH HIS OFFERING . HIS OPENING DOES NOT SURPRISE ME. WHAT PEOPLE WANT TO SEE IS MOVIES LIKE TAKEN. WHICH WAS THE MOST ENERTAINING. I MIGHT ADD PEOPLE ACTUALLY CLAPPED A FIRST FOR A MOVIE NOWADAYS.
THEY SURE DID NOT USE TROOPS FOR THE HURT LOCKER! AS FOR DAMONS MOVIE I WILL NEVER SEE IT, AS IT LOOKS LIKE MOST OTHERS ARE TOO!
It's obvious you either don't know real history or don't know what's portrayed in this movie, because sweetheart, it's not factual and if you think it is, you've bought into a semi full of crap.
World Trade Center had to be hurt somewhat by who directed it. I was worried he was going to trash the Police and Firemen involved. Yet, it still made $100Mill.
ACTUALLY I LOVED THE AIRAMERICA PUPPET MOVIE. ESPECIALLY THE WORLD MEETING OF HOLLYWOOD LIBERALS WHO ALL GOT BLOWN UP!. KIM JONG COULD NOT HAVE LOOKED ANY FUNNIER. BUT TOO SEE BALDWIN AND STRIESAND GET BLOWN UP SOME HOW SEEMED PROPHETIC AND FUNNY!
Good to see another of these anti-American propagandist Hollywood movies go down in flames.
Rajiv Chandrasekaran is the author of the book, 'Imperial Life in the Emerald City: Inside Iraq's Green Zone', on which this movie is based.
He is also a scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center, a progressive hotbed, whose mission is to embody Wilson's ideals in a global effort. Woodrow Wilson, the president who brought us the income tax, the Federal Reserve, and The League of Nations.
yeah Bosch, maybe it should have been named the Red Zone. Maat Damin, indeed.
"But I'm Matt Damon! MATT DAMON!!!"
Awww, Amanda. Bitter much? Poor poor baby.
HA Suck it, Matt Damon!
And you too, Amanda!
DONT NEED TO SEE A MOVIE TO KNOW OUR GOVERMENT LIES TOI US. I HAVE SEEN IT FOR THE LAT YEAR AND A FEW MONTHS! WHY THE TELEPROMPTER LIES ON A DAILY BASIS.
Waaaugh waugh waugh waugh!
It's a free country, and you are free to support whatever you want to, thanks to the brave troops who risk their lives to defend that right for you. If you want to support a film that will likely be used as jihadist propaganda to recruit suicide bombers to kill those very troops, along with many innocent civilians, and encourage the making of more such films, please feel free to do so.
Clearly, you know nothing about Hollywood.
The movie cost 100 million to make.
Maybe around that much or close to it to promote.
Not to mention the capital that Matt Damon is spending and losing putting his mug out there and ruining his already tarnished reputation.
Bottom line: it won't even COME CLOSE to getting it's money back, let alone make a profit.
By all accounts, it's a flop, sir or madam. Plain and simple.
Oh–and to your point that we'd rather see a fantasy to this movie. Umm, yeah! At least one tells it's a fantasy, while the other pretends to tell the truth, when in fact ITS the one true fantasy playing (and flopping) in theaters this weekend.
"Nominally, pro-military "Kingdom" – you mean the one with the sucker punch at the end showing us that we were no different than the savage terrorists that plant multiple bombs so as to kill the second responders – "kill 'em all"."
You're nowhere near alone in throwing this out there, but it's a really silly interpretation of the ending. "kill them all" referring to jihadists is in no way drawing equivalence to the jihadists stated desire to kill every American or westerner.
Buy, buy …… not when it ain't american pie. You know, over the years when one keeps banging their heads into a rail, wouldn't you think they'd learn to duck? Not our friends in Bollywood. Actors are not over educated, they are just lame. The talent is in the writers. Actors are just good at pretending. The eye opener for most came when someone in the cutting room contrived to show all the out-takes of these actors screwing-up. Now we know that they aren't smart enough to memorise the script, and that it takes many times to get the scene correct, so how smart are they? With the economy in the tank, people haven't the money to watch lame movies that attack our country. Damon, Penn and many others need to shut up.
I may be the only person thinking this but I loved Matt Damon in Dogma.. granted its probably because he didn't have many lines AND he was stabbed to death by Ben Afflack (?) but regardless of this it is the highlight of his acting career.
Of course Damon could have made this movie in Cuba, Russia, or China. (In "La Zona Verde," el senor Matt Damon stars as un soldado americano who discovers that la administracion del presidente Bush lied about Saddam Hussein having armas de destruccion masiva.)
</intentionally missing the point>
I don't know about Penn and Hanks, but Damon doesn't have a college degree.
A great letter! I wish I could be so calm, less agro, and you certainly show how Joe! thanks.
i was drawn to Bourne, because I was monumentally naive about politics & him! Times….. they are a changing! Thanks Bighollywood!
And don't forget the 70%+ that are Christian! & more Jews! Though I don't mind me an AnnRander once in awhile. But alas…. commie liberal athiest sharia dictator seems to be the audience…
I salute the memory of your uncle, Tressa, and where he is, thank him for his great sacrifice.
you made me laff!!!!
For those interested, I highly recommend the documentary, which you can purchase here:

Well worth the watch.
I knew "Green Zone" flopped when Deadlinehollywooddaily.com delayed in posting the figures. Such joy makes one feel guilty somehow. Well, not really.
When I went back to college after my Air Force service during the last stages of the war in Vietnam, the quickest way to get laid was to claim you witnessed or participated in some made-up atrocity. I was happily married and didn't play that particular game, but those that did soon found out how dispensible they were to those who held them in utter contempt but were only too happy to use them to make political points.
To those 30 real or fake vets who jumped at the chance to play along with Matt's leftist fantasy, I wish them all the best. Really.
I'm sure it will do better with its release in France, Syria and Iran…
The funniest thing is not just this bombing, but Damon and Greengrass coming out with this five days after the rest of Hollywood decided that — at least while Obama's in the White House and Harry and Nancy are running Congress — maybe it's time to tone-down the anti-American attitude in both the production of and the awards given to movies over the past eight years and start trying to build our box-office numbers (and their future salaries) back up again with films that don't deliberately try to insult 50 percent or more of the potential domestic box office.
Matt and Paul are still die-hard holdouts, fighting the last war for Hollywood against Bush, Cheney and the U.S. military. I expect both to scramble back to the Bourne franchise in 2011 to get their credentials repaired, as far as box-office take goes, and then go utterly off the rails again with another piece of far left tripe in the run-up to the 2012 election.
