Conservatives often talk about what they don’t like about Hollywood. That’s okay, but it’s not productive. Maybe it’s time we talked about what we do like? More to the point, let’s point out when Hollywood has gotten it right. And that brings me to the...

Interesting Trailer. Has anyone heard anything?
He steals, what, stage lighting? Outdoor lighting? Or maybe he's a thief who lights….stuff…..
In-the-headlineTYPO alert!
This does look really good. The idea of demigods, nephilim, etc., has always fascinated me, and is one of the things that makes Stargate SG-1 so interesting. (I'm only on season 4 – I'm so bummin' in May, when Hulu takes them all down.)
Have you seen the Window of Time episode yet? I can't remember which season that is 4 or 5 I think..but it's my favorite episode of the entire series.
I see, at the end of the trailer, that ol' Maddow got herself a new hairdo…
Lighting thief. It's probably better than the book, which I think is about Wynona Rider.
I read the book. It is a series of them, actually. If you like the demi-god theories, you'll love the story. Hopefully, the movie is half as good as the book. Still looking for the next in the series. I'm taking my daughter to see it, since she gave me the book to begin with.
The movie looks cool, but February releases are usually things the studio figures aren't good enough to release during the busier movie seasons. I wouldn't be surprised if this is very forgettable (although a nice sci-fi movie would be cool to tide us over until the real movie season starts).
SG-1 only gets better from there. Just wait until Prometheus is built.
The trailer looks pretty good. The stars are mostly not first-echelon, but still experienced and capable. The books were fun, and indicated a decent knowledge of how to translate Greek mythology (largely) into modern locales. Logan Lerman was pretty good in his TV and movie parts, and even though the character in the book was twelve years old (I think), Lerman hasn't seemed to mature enough physically to make him look too old for the part.
‘Percy Jackson & the Lighting Thief’ Opens Everywhere Tomorrow….and we care because….?
Demi-god, that's below Obama's pay grade I hear. I'll be waiting for our more intrepid and wealthier commenters to decide if it's worth a ticket.
The books were great fun (and even leaned pro-American: why are the Greek gods in America? Because it's the heart of Western Civilization, and Western Civ is portrayed as generally GOOD and worth fighting for.) It's pretty much a coming of age epic with all the tropes and trials that entails.
Saw it the other night. Definitely a kid's movie. Would make a nice night-time showing on the Disney Channel. My 10-year-old son loved the book, and there are some decent lessons in there. Unfortunately, too much of the good stuff didn't make it into the film. Action sequences are fine, but the whole movie has a made-for-tv feel to it. Nothing objectionable in there, at least.
IT'S "LIGHTNING" THIEF FOR GOODNESS SAKE!
Because staging the lights for film is bad enough, now some punk kid's gotta come in and steal it.
(Just making fun of your typing)
"200" = Best. Episode. Ever!
Sean Bean's in it.
That's all I care about.
My 12-yo daughter devoured all the books in what seemed like world record time. We're seeing the movie on Saturday, and she can't wait.
But the theme of a youth who discovers he's half-divine has been around since…the Greek myths themselves. Not exactly a new trope, just piled on now with fx.
Because it's the sort of wholesome family entertainment people are always complaining there's not enough of?
I'm just grumbling about them casting actors (especially the lead woman) almost twice the age of the characters in the book. Think the second Harry Potter movie: that's how old these actors are supposed to be. The woman in the movie is supposed to be playing 12 and she's 23!!!
It must be pretty cool to wake up one day and discover you're a demi-god with all these great powers and stuff. A lot better than dealing with the real world. I'm skeptical of the sub-text of movies such as this.
Not "Window of Opportunity"?
If you mean the one where Jack and Teal'c get stuck in a time loop, it was Season 4. "Window of Opportunity".
Jack O'Neill: [during the briefing] Anyway I don't know why none of you remember any of this! But I do know for a fact there's no point in having ole Doc Frasier examine us AGAIN!
[everyone stares at O'Neill. Cut to O'Neill being examines by Dr. Fraiser]
Jack O'Neill: I ask you… What could possibly be in my eye that would explain this?
(Then there's the whole part of Jack and Teal'c hitting golf balls into an active Stargate.)
I'm giving this a pass. I saw the examples of Chris Columbus' 'talent' in the first and second Potter films and I was not impressed. This man is not an exciting director, nor is he one who handles tension well. Ergo, I have no enthusiasm for a film Columbus directs. But what really turns me off about it is that the 'hero' in this film has NO character development. Okay, so he can hold his breath under water for 7 minutes but that's a power, not a character trait. I need the character in order to connect emotionally and I can't because there's none here. In contrast, I instantly connected emotionally with Harry Potter because his powerful character was that of an abused orphan.
Sorry – all in all, this 'Lightning Thief' just does not cut it with me.
My eight year old wants to see it. He heard about Poseidon in the trailer and has been asking me all sorts of questions lately about Greek mythology. If he does his chores and helps around the house he will have earned the movie of his choice and I will see it with him. I'm not looking for great character development or some grand epic of film-making. I just want to enjoy a couple hours with my son- without those insipid Disney dance numbers.
I saw a promo on TV. It's a teen type film. It had a shot of a pair of magic sneakers or something and the hero going "Whoa!!!"
I'm out.
Yeah..I couldn't remember Time..Opportunity…but Richard Dean Anderson in golf clothes booting balls through the StarGate screaming at General Hammond "In the middle of my back swing!" that I remember. I love that episode..I have it in my DVR and watch it when I don't feel well. lol
Not meaning to be difficult, but if you're giving it a pass how can you say with confidence that there is no NO character development?
I saw the midnight show last night with my 12 year olds and a few of their friends. They had all REALLY loved the books and now were really getting into Greek mythology, which is all to the good. But why have a midnight showing for a film with 25 people in the audience? I think they were expecting a Harry Potter line experience with everyone really into it, but we ended up going home and coming back at 11:30.
The film was just not very good. When there were grown ups on screen, it moved along, (Sean Bean and Lucius Vorenus, the hysterical Steve Coogan, not to mention Rosario Dawson) but when it was the three main kids it was just awful. All the dialog and relationships between them were very forced and artificial. Where were Harry, Hermione, and Ron when you needed them?
About halfway through I thought, "They won't be making any more of these."
It seems like an unfortunate recent Hollywood trend. My suspicion is that this is the consequence of Hollywood bigwigs tripping over themselves trying to find "The Next Harry Potter", and are unfortunately so blinded by the prospects of making big bucks from merchandising and sequel rights that they've allowed themselves to lose sight of the first priority: making a decent movie in the first place.
Oh. Well if this is a site about movies, I expect henceforth separate posts announcing the opening of every movie.
And how do you know it's wholesome family entertainment? Did you happen to see it before it was released?
Worked for Twilight.
Good lord! Lighten up!
