Christopher Nolan To Start 3rd ‘Batman’, Oversee ‘Superman’ Reboot
by Big HollywoodOther than this has to be too good to be true, there’s nothing to comment on. To make suggestions or to give advice or to create some kind of wish list regarding these upcoming films, as though anything anyone could come up with will surpass the genius of Christopher Nolan, is foolish. So carry on, Mr. Nolan. See ya, opening day.

More of this, please…
Warner Bros is trying to ready its DC Comics stalwart Superman to soar again on the Big Screen, and the studio has turned to Chris Nolan to mentor development of the movie. Our insiders say that the brains behind rebooted Batman has been asked to play a “godfather” role and ensure The Man Of Steel gets off the ground after a 3 1/2-year hiatus. Nolan’s leadership of the project can set it in the right direction with the critics and the fans, not to mention at the box office. Besides, Nolan is considered something of a god at Warner Bros and has a strong relationship with the studio after the success of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Though he wasn’t obligated to do so, he gave the studio first crack at his spec script Inception, and Warner Bros was able to buy it before other studios even got a sniff. While Nolan completes that Leonardo DiCaprio-starrer for a July 16th release, he’s also hatched an idea for Warner Bros’ third Batman installment. Now his brother and frequent collaborator Jonah Nolan, and David Goyer who co-wrote Batman Begins and penned the story for The Dark Knight, are off scripting it.
Let us emphasize that Superman 3.0 is in the early stages of development. And we doubt Nolan would direct. This wouldn’t be a sequel to Superman Returns but a completely fresh franchise.

Superman needs two things: Muscles and a love for the United States. These were sorely lacking from the last movie and I believe the reason it didn't do well. He is a conservative hero no matter how the liberals spin it.
Yes……Yes…….YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!
OMG, that last monstrosity they put out actually depressed me with it's awfulness.
Clark Kent would NEVER leave his elderly mother to spend years in deep space to see a dead world.
And Superman would never turn his back on Earth because he was feeling unwubbed.
And don't get me started on the whole bastard child stuff.
The one thing I will give them credit for it the fact that I could almost buy people thinking Clark Kent and Superman as two seperate people.
Best news I've heard all FRAKKING DECADE!!!
Routh is pretty good on Chuck and seems to fit well within the show and on television in general. Glad to see he's employed (plus they made a Superman joke last night). But the idea of Nolan rebooting Superman has me drooling all over my keyboard.
I just have a few requests:
Lois doesn't have a kid.
1) No origin story. God knows, we've seen it enough already, and Smallville's been doing it for ten years now. Time to move in a new direction.
2) Speaking of which, please go back to the comics like Raimi did on the first two Spider-Mans. They've been telling Superman stories for damn-near 75 years. There's at least a few movie-worthy, truly sparkling gems in there.
3) Lois knows. Period. Time to grow up.
4) Another villain besides Lex Luthor. Please!
5) I don't mind having Luthor in it, but make him the big, fat corporate billionaire like in the comics (a grown-up version of the Smallville Luthor). And save him for the next movie.
6) The cape is RED, the shield is big, and the suit is not made out of rubber.
7) No cheesy humor.
9) He's SuperMAN. No one should question his sexual preference, he doesn't play peeping tom, and he's not a dead-beat dad. And he's big and muscular, not thin and girly.
10) Lois isn't a teenager playing grown-up. Anyone they cast should at least be on par with Teri Hatcher and Erica Durance.
I'd also suggest a setting in the 1930's… Kind of a "Sky Captain and the World Of Tomorrow" look. Superman Returns (in my opinion) was horrible to the point of being unwatchable.
how did that "This wouldn’t be a sequel … but a completely fresh franchise" work out for the Hulk?
I'm sory man I'm on board for Batman, but the Superman thing will have to be vastly different and have really good reviews for me to even consider it. What a mess that last one was.
This would normally really get me excited, but what does it mean to say that Nolan is going to "mentor" the film? Does that mean he gets to pick the director? I don't think I could stand it if we got stuck with someone like McG at the helm. I'm going to wait until I know more before I allow myself to get happy about this.
God yeah, if you can't get something as simple as a Superman outfit right then you should never be allowed near a Superman project.
Yes, another Sky Captain fan (I take it).
So, you're saying, no SuperMetroSexual?
Totally agree.
All I know about Superman is what I watched on "Lois and Clark" and "Smallville." This is probably not a good thing, so I'll refrain from giving any opinions, except that if Chris Nolan's overseeing it, it's probably worth a shot.
Truth, Justice and the American Way.
I, for one, welcome our new Kryptonian overlords!
Love that idea a lot.
Isn't is amazing that Christopher Reeves is still the face of the 'Man of Steel.' His image is iconic, and sadly, has to be overwhelmed by someone else for another Superman to truly succeed.
Chris Nolan behind both Batman and Superman. To amazing to be true
I liked Routh in the 2006 pic. He was about the only thing I liked about that movie. I hope he's in the next one. The problem with the last movie was the "creative force" behind it and directing it.
Dude, go rent the Christopher Reeve series of movies. Well worth it. A little dated and campy at times, yes, but true to the original concept of Superman.
"how did that "This wouldn’t be a sequel … but a completely fresh franchise" work out for the Hulk? "
Pretty good, actually. Ang Lee's Hulk made me miss the demise of MST3K all the more. But the Hulk movie from 2 years ago was fun. Not being a huge Hulk fan, that was good enough for me.
Well, Superman & Superman II. (Donner's films) Let's pretend the others never happened. Seriously, Superman II is one of my all-time favorite movies. "General, would you care to step outside?" Love it!
Three words – "Death of Superman." That's the story that needs to be made into a full-length movie.
Hmmmm… Then maybe my still unopened copy my be worth more than $4.
I loved the look and feel of Sky Captain.
Talking about metro-males, check this out, make sure you click the links!

The least of it's problems is the human/Kryptonian kid… the major problem is that Superman (in Singer's film) is a super-stalker. He's uber-creepy.
That, and the eye-candy scene where the bullet gets crushed by Superman's eye was silly (and not in a good way) and utterly lame.
The cheesy comedy and tongue-in-cheek humor is fine… it's one of the tricky elements Donner got right in the first film… but, I won't be crushed if isn't in a Superman film these days.
And you are SO right about Lois… she's a broad, a dame! Maybe not even hotsy-totsy, but she's got moxie, brains, and spunk. Lois Lane is brassy and bold and knows how to get a story.
As much as folks complained about Margot Kidder, she was a GREAT Lois… all the right attitude!
And not "all that stuff".
His whole Hero Sequence in the middle of the first Superman film is still eye catching, fun, and thrilling.
You bet your red, white and blue american ass baby!
Hopefully, Chris Nolan will research and realize the best live-action presentation of the Superman character was that of actor GEORGE (not Chris) Reeves. If that chemistry could be captured in a modern setting, go for it. If not, do it as a period piece. Has anyone talked to Billy Zane about the project? He can project George’s charm with the right balance of tongue0in0cheek and respect for the material as he did in the Phantom.
I’m really excited by this news, and I’m not even a huge fan of Superman. But hey, a few years ago, I didn’t care about Batman, either. Now I’m dying to see a third film.
One thing I’m very curious about is how, under Nolan’s method of gritty realism, they’re gonna explain the whole secret identity thing. Glasses aren’t gonna cut it.
Horrible news. This means Warner Bros. wants to go "The Dark Knight" route with Superman and that's not the character. Just imagine Superman in Nolan's Batman universe. It doesn't work.
That, and there's the whole "New Continent Made Partially Of Kryptonite That Superman is Somehow strong enough to throw into space after being barely able to walk on it…"
With any movie, especially one based on a comic book, you have to suspend your disbelief to a point to enjoy it. But when the movie is breaking it's own rules as a plot point, that illusion gets shattered.
When I saw in the trailers that Superman's costume had the same color scheme as the "evil" Superman from Superman III, I knew they were going to screw it up. Superman is not a dark, gritty, vigilante with daddy issues like Batman. He is a knight in shining armor, a pargon of virtue, and a freaking Boy Scout. He should look and act like one.
"how did that 'This wouldn’t be a sequel … but a completely fresh franchise' work out for the Hulk?"
It worked out okay. Much better for Batman Returns, Casino Royale, and others.
For some dumb reason, the script was changed. In the original — and in the novelization — Lex Luthor had scientific research manipulated so Superman would believe that Krypton was still intact. That's why Superman missed Lex's trial, which allowed him to walk.
What was left was an even more muddled, motivationless, mess.
Sounds great. Where can I send my resume.
There's NOTHING in Chris Nolan's filmography thus far as director or producer to suggest that he's "right" for Superman, other than the fact that he made a Batman movie that made money.
Not to be a buzzkill, but the "other shoe" that's been hovering since Dark Knight was that Warner Bros. would make the mistake of believing that the "dark" Michael Mann pastiche approach of that film would work on ALL their superhero franchises, when it really only works for a HANDFUL of Batman stories. And this sounds an awful lot like that.
WOO-HOO!
I will settle for Hatcher. But I yearn for Kidder.
Cue Ben Shapiro naming Nolan the new "most overrated director."
Singer had a fixation on the earlier franchise and cast a Reeve look-alike in Routh. I think a better way to have gone, and still possible, is to give a crack at it, and just progress the already-existing Smallville series into big moviedom. Give that cast a bigger budget, tighter scripting, etc. Probably discover that Lex is alive, and put Clark in a Supersuit and have at it. The groundwork's laid out, the cast is there, as are the sets, and, to some extent, the base audience.
Billy Zane? That guy is so far left that you need a map to trace his anti-American sentiments over the years. Eff him!
Chris Nolan should construct a Superman entirely made of 3D CG, with the visual inspiration from Alex Ross's Superman and a mix of George Reeve and Christopher Reeve for physical and facial resemblances. Have a good voice and mo-cap actor to be Clark Kent and Superman.
Much like, the news about Captain America, I have mixed feelings about this news. Christopher Nolan is a fantastic director, Batman Begins and Dark Knight were both brilliant examinations of the Batman character and how the semi-real world would react to such a man (even though halfway through Dark Knight Chris got bored with Batman and found Harvey more interesting). I'm ecstatic to hear they're beginning the third Batman film, although I expect a bit of Return of the Jedi syndrome (hard to top Dark Knight).
I'm nervous about Superman, but have hope. I'm nervous because I recall the WB executives saying that all their superhero movies would be dark and gritty like Dark Knight because "that's what people want to see". But then again, Chris Nolan is a good director. How he'll work in the producer's role has yet to be seen (has he produced any films he hasn't directed as well?). He could decide that he wants to do something different for Superman from his usual gritty drama. Even Hitchcock did the Trouble With Harry. He does have a solid understanding of character and drama, so it has the potential to be very, very good. Let;s hope he reads a whole bunch of Elliot S! Maggin comics to get ideas.
"Muscles and a love for the United States."
Don´t forget: a sense of fun. The last movie was far too melon collie.
It´s not a perfect movie, but I could watch any number of movies set in that world.
Hey, I´d move to that world. The opening with the Zeppelin docking gets me every time.
I don't like what Nolan did to Batman. I hate how realistic he made the Batman world and I feel that he took some of the magic out of it, by grounding it too much in reality. Seeing his knack for trying to be super realistic, I don't want to even think about what he would do to the Superman world.
Yes, bring back the George Reeves style of Superman. Even without his powers, George Reeves could still kick your butt. A little bit of kryptonite and the new guy gets his ass whooped by an old man.
The DVD extras of the 1978 movie contain footage of screen tests with a number of fine actresses. And it´s not hard to see why they went for Kidder. She was just right.
The part fit him like a glove.
Sure, a "conservative" hero created by two Jews in Cleveland during the Depression. That's why Clark Kent resembles Herbert Hoover. Really. Don't be stupid.
Why do you spell "melancholy" the Smashing Pumpkins way?
Ditto the Yes….. Yes….. YESSSSSSSSSS!!!!
Bats 3 and Supes reboot? With Nolan? Count me in!
Now, if we could only get him to do a Flash movie
Yes, he is the boss of the team that makes the next Superman movie. Its going to be his job to make sure the people he hires don't mess it up.
As a huge DC fan (Batman my fav. character), this is exciting news and a huge relief. I have great confidence that he'll hire the right people who respect the source material and make sure that Superman will fight for Truth, Justice and THE AMERICAN WAY. Warner Bros. wants to set up a Justice League of America movie (ala what Marvel is doing with the Avengers movie), so they need Superman to be done right. He's a great choice to handle that responsibility.
One must assume that Nolan is smart enough to know that the "dark & gritty" approach does not work for Superman. And maybe Nolan enjoys a change of pace once in a while. Even The Dark Knight contained its share of rousing moments, you just don´t remember it that way.
If I´m wrong, well, it will be interesting to watch for all the wrong reasons.
There's hope for a decent Superman movie yet. It's been a long dry spell since the classic Superman: The Movie and Superman II. Hopefully Nolan "gets" the Superman character and doesn't just make him a Batman in red and blue tights. In many ways he's the opposite of Batman.
While I think the first Supes movie is the best so far, I didn't care for the "Otis" character at all and, though I love the fantastic in comic books, I just couldn't "suspend belief" when he "turned back time". Sorry, not even the man of steel could do that. Develop the Clark Kent side of his character, stay away from silly campiness, give him a different villain, keep the kryptonite to a minimum and make him a "real" man (not a metrosexual) who is proud of his adopted home country and I think we'll have a winner.
Honestly? I don´t know. It seemed a good idea at the time.
The Smashing Pumpkins were probably not the first to spell it like that.
… and get Geoff Johns to write The Flash movie!
So, just because they were Jewish you insult them by calling them liberal? You anti-semite!
(BTW, Democrats in the 30s were patriotic. Unlike their scumsucking descendants today)
If you've never seen the first Superman movie (1978) rent it. The way Reeves pulled his shoulders in, slumped enough to make himself appear shorter, combed his hair in a nerdy way, spoke with a slightly higher voice (more nasally than from the gut) and acted like a momma's boy while being Clark was a lot more than just Superman out of uniform wearing glasses.
Here is an idea they should consider. Stop hiring openly gay directors and writers for your comic book properties. Now there is nothing wrong with being gay, just don't hire them as directors and writers for these movies. They can not hold back from putting in their own little additions like nipples on the batsuit and a Superman that does not believe in Truth Justice and the American way.
Go read John Byrnes amazing run on Superman in the 80's. Man of Steel is probably one of the best Superman origin retellings ever. Maybe even add in some of James Hudnall's Unauthorized Lex Luther Biography. Combine those and you have a Superman people will want to see.
I loves me some Sky Captain.
Hi Bob. I respect your opinion, but what does an actor's politics have to do with it if the actor can act? Alec Baldwin is a flaming lib, but he was convincing as the Shadow.
Hi Sarah. I also respect your opinion, but Superman is a MAN, not a prep school cheerleader. And Shatner and Connery were both bald when they portrayed Captain Kirk and James Bond with a pretty good looking head of hair. Remember, it's Hollywood.
Love the screen name. Just sayin'. World could use some good Yeti movies.
Sky Captain is the BEST! Even Gwyneth couldn't ruin it!
There's nothing wrong with Smallville. They've done a great job expanding and tweeking the Superman story.
They should have spun Smallville off into a movie series rather than trying the Superman Returns reboot, which was a major dud.
So now Warner Bros. wants to "Nolanize" Superman. Like the guy isn't busy enough trying to figure a way to top The Dark Knight. Leave him alone!
Personally, I think they should give the Superman franchise a rest for a few more years.
Billy Zane is two things: old enough to be Superman's father, and balder than Lex Luthor. I think he's a good actor, but he's not right for Superman.
Another Sky Captain groupie checking in…I'd watch a Period Superman Reboot by Chris Nolan on the side of a busted building in Liberty City. :p
*MissQuinn*
The music totally infuses those shots with a sense of wonder and astonishment. I love that opening.
"Lenscap."
Hi Bob. I respect your opinion, but what does an actor's politics have to do with it if the actor can act? Alec Baldwin is a flaming lib, but he was convincing as the Shadow.
More power to him. Nolan is a genius, I'd watch a remake of the Goonies if he did it.
It would be great if this new movie represented the Superman that everyone remembers instead of the newer 'question everything I ever stood for' tolerance-first Superdouche in more modern comics. I still read comics (as geeky as that may be), but after reading DC: New Frontier, I am scratching my head as to why some of the greatest characters in fiction have been transplanted with the equivalent of flying tampons.
"Look at the sky, it's a bird, it's a plane, it's… The Simpering Diplomat! And he's come to regret the country he once represented!"
But if the new Superman is anything like The Dark Knight, nobody will be disappointed.
It just goes to show how far from the original ideals of the United States the left and even sadly many Jews have come. As said below, Patriotism used to belong to both sides. Now it is any wonder Patriots still exist.
You know who'd be a damn good Superman?
Big Hollywoods own Adam Baldwin!
Tell me I'm wrong, I dare ya!
I've seen those screen tests. The only one who, IMO, could compete with Kidder was Stockard Channing. She had the same kind of spunk we look for in Lois Lane.
And so did the suit. Wow!

You are probably right; it´s been a long time. I´ll have another look at them. Just perfect for a nasty cold winter evening.
Heh. Many, many years ago I read a book on the making of the film – and what an epic production that was – and they initially had a problem making sure that "the bulge" was always in the same place. They used to make jokes at the expense of the continuity lady, you know "did he dress to the right or left yesterday?". If I remember correctly they redesigned the codpiece to solve that problem.
Christopher Nolan understands the characters well enough to know they don’t work in each other’s universe. He has repeatedly expressed he doesn’t want to make a batman superman movie because he thinks they are complete opposites. That is also the reason why he is only participating as a godfather to the film and choosing the director, so he doesn’t mess it up and make it to dark.
DC comics is making all the superman & batman cartoons for the fans that want to see animated stuff. if there is going to be another superman movie it needs to be live action and real, in other words something that makes sense to the character and reality, Nolan has done that with batman and the joker.
so di you like batman and robin and the other one with msr. freeze???
LOL!!! that was awesome.
Christopher Nolan will do his thing and make it a great movie. But he might make it something completely different from what we have seen before, wish is good because what I saw before was that abortion "Superman Returns". But just like people preferred the original Tim Burton batman with jack as the joker instead of the two with robin and the nipples, and people thought that nobody should have touched the franchise again.. Nolan managed to make two of the best movies of our time. So, even though people love the original superman movies and are disappointed by the last one, Give Nolan the credit he diserves for what he has done.. Do not worry, Nolan will prevail.
