Name this movie: An ace CIA operative, condemned as a rogue and now hunted by the Company, bashes and crashes his way through colorful foreign settings, pursued by heavily armed hit men, while back at Langley headquarters an inscrutable deputy director and one of his top lieutenants are arousing the...

Happy birthday, Red. I hope the ringing in your ears has cleared up (Ste. Mere Eglise).
Happy birthday, Red!!
I love "Hatari!"
There seems to be rare examples of movies from about 1962-1978 that didn't include Red Buttons in some way (rest assured that if it was one of those "disaster" flicks, or at least an "ensemble" movie whose poster had a gazillion boxes with actors photos at the bottom, Red was there).
So many to choose from, but my favorite of his still remains "Viva Kneivel!" starring Kareen Abdul-Jabbar in the title role. Oh, I kid. Yes, the real Evel plays himself in that one along with – astonishingly – the great Gene Kelly as his flunky, alcoholic mechanic. A must see. Leslie Nielsen plays a mafia drug dealer whom Evel must battle. It's like "Airplane!" except for real. And, of course, Red Buttons is there (classic line, "what is this, judgment day?!").
Okay, okay…..enough already. I loved him in "The Longest Day" like the rest of you. He was also great in "They Shoot Horses Don't They?", although I'm not a big fan of that flick as a whole.
I used to watch The Dean Martin Roasts when I was a kid and I always loved Red Buttons. "Never got a dinner!"
"The Double Life of Henry Phyfe" (1966)
Classic TV show with one of the great Intro songs…" On his first day in, he was done-in by a hit-and-run…."
'Ha-ha, Ho-ho, Hee-hee….Strange things are happening'.
Loved to watch Red's TV program as a little kid, and his movie turns never disappointed. Happy Birthday, Mr. Buttons!
"This artist never got an Oscar!"

I think I meant: "never got a dinner!" oops
Who is the woman Red Buttons is hugging?
Miyoshi Umeki.
They both won Best Supporting Oscars for "Sayonara" (1957).
There was a pop culture fascination with things Asian aka "Oriental" at that time. Not sure why. Pat Suzuki, Flower Drum Song, Chung King, Northwest Orient, Little Boy Lost, Sooky Yaki (the song).
Anyone know why?
Happy birthday Red. Love ya.
If we're talking the 1950s and '60s here, I would assume it has a lot to do with the fact that most of our foreign policy (especially of the shooting kind) was focused in that direction. Just a guess; I may be wrong.
So have you and lovebird Hank made up yet?
Our 'Occupation' of Japan after WWII brought an intimacy that really hadn't existed before, and learning to live as friends enhanced our natural curiosity of the "exotic".
Just guessin'….
She's adorable. I'll have to rent the movie.
She is indeed.
She is also terrific in "Flower Drum Song" (1961), and as Mrs Livingston, the housekeeper in "The Courtship of Eddie's Father" TV show (1969-72).
I love all the people defending NBC at the story about the black history month menu. Would they do the same if it was the black history month menu at the EIB Cafeteria (presuming such a place existed)? This is probably a case where people on our side join in defending it. Not me. Let the left get a taste for a change. But, we are too fair-minded and always come to the left's defense on things like this, and thus help to make the issue go away. Sigh.
The EIB office is having the NBC menu with watermelon added for Monday. It's a 'tweak the media' home run, I think.
Great in "They Shoot Horses…" A hoot on the Dean Martin roasts. Always loved the guy's energy. Happy B'day, Red!
It is global warming everyone. We are looking at getting maybe 30 inches of snow here in Virginia.
"Good morning, Mister Eddie's Father…"
Jake, you old dog, good to hear from you…and I could hear Miyoshi's voice in your post.
Is that for real? I can't tell, because it's something Rush would do.
He did it again!

Worst president ever!
Happy birthday, Red Buttons! You were such a peppy guy in The Poseidon Adventure, jogging around the deck, swilling down all of the vitamin, and looking properly uneasy by Shelly Winter's creepily solicitous attention.
You were awesome on The Longest Day as Pvt. John Steele of the 82nd Airborne Division, hanging from that bell tower and watching helplessly at the slaughter of your fellow paratroopers.
You really delivered the goods in Your Cheatin' Heart as Shorty Younger, Hank Williams' long-suffering manager. It was your best dramatic turn.
I enjoyed you in <Hatari, goofing around with Duke Wayne, shooting off that big rocket to catch all of those monkeys, and getting Michèle Girardon. You are one lucky dog!
Speaking of luck, the main reason you got that Oscar for Sayonara is because movie-goers could hear your dialogue, unlike your co-star Marlon Brandon, who mumbled his way through his part filtered through a incomprehensible Southern accent. Now that's luck!
Thanks for the memories, Mr. Buttons!
Anyone remember this:
But at the 1997 Masters tournament, Zoeller made an off-hand remark regarding Tiger Woods. After finishing tied for 34th place with a score of 78, Zoeller, referring to the following year's Masters Champions Dinner, for which the defending champion selects the menu, said, "He's doing quite well, pretty impressive. That little boy is driving well and he's putting well. He's doing everything it takes to win. So, you know what you guys do when he gets in here? You pat him on the back and say congratulations and enjoy it and tell him not to serve fried chicken next year. Got it." Zoeller then smiled, snapped his fingers, and walked away before turning and adding, "or collard greens or whatever the hell they serve."[2] K-Mart and Dunlop ceased sponsoring Zoeller after the incident.
To bad he "neva gotta dinna"
For real. Bo Snerdley is a vegan so the watermelon was added to make up for his lack of chicken. BBQ ribs were discussed.
From 24/7 update email– "NBC's Racist Black History Month Menu Has One Omission
We're going to tweak the media with this on Monday."
The MSM exploding heads will be a sight to see for a day or two.
I haven't been able to tune in lately, but I'm going to make a special effort for Monday. Classic.
That must be something only a native English speaker gets. I can't find the insult there. Oh well.
I had the pleasure of being the chauffeur for Mr. Buttons to the Academy Awards several years ago. What a delightful gentlman! I have a pretty good sense of humor and I tended to keep thing light whenever I had older folks to drive around. I could not put one over on him to save my life and he had me in stitches. I told him that he was a natural to host the event. ALL THE BEST, MR. B! AND A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!
Yes, 50s and 60s. My Mom had all sorts of 'Oriental' decor items in the house. I know there was a teens and 1920s fascination due some Fair or something at the time.
Hank – the zombies friend? Don't know. Have not looked since this morning. This will be the last day for zombie attacks from my side.
Could be. Thx!
I liked him in "They Shoot Horses Don't They?" and liked the film, too. Great soundtrack by the legendary Johnny Green.
I think she is miyoshi umeki, they each won an Oscar for Sayanara in 1957. He was best supporting actor, and she won for best supporting actress.
They were both wonderful in those parts. Miss Umeki was delightfully cute and Buttons was properly loving. The scene where Brando finds them dead after committing suicide STILL brings tears to my eyes–and I'm not normally terribly emotional.
