Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me three times, and I’m probably in on the scam with you - or I am a fool. James Cameron’s next project may well be a film about Hiroshima. Sure, after the powerful show of solidarity...

I first saw him in McHale's Navy repeats when I was young, I also saw him in a lot of movies. Great talent and a very funny, real person.

Happy birthday to a very good man, Mr. Ernest Borgnine.
Hard not to associate Ernest with Marty. A great actor, though.
Its sad…you know. I grew up watching this guy. Talented actor…handsome in a way. But just like every other leftist loon out there. Once I find out how leftist they are I cant see them any other way. Sort of like the Dixie Chicks or Bruce Springsteen… Once you hear one of their liberal tirades you can listen or watch them anymore without your stomach hurting… So with that. Happy Birthday Mr. Borgnine.
Then you lose out just like everyone else who filters screen actors through a political lens before they allow themselves to enjoy or avoid their work.
I never knew his political leanings and – assuming you are correct – I don't care. He's an AMERICAN, he's served his country and he has the right to believe whatever he wants to believe.
Are you sure he's a "leftist loon"? There was an article in here a half year or so ago that didn't say anything in that regard. The last political contribution I found (after a quick search) showed he gave two grand to GWB in 2004.
I do agree with you about not being able to separate the "artist" from their political leanings and disagree with LB Mayer about 'losing out.". I consider it as a minor boycott with my not wanting to support them in any way. Sure, anyone has the right to say what they like, even if it's profoundly stupid. I reserve the right to call them a dumbass and to keep my wallet closed in regards to their "art".
Are you sure you are thinking of the right person, this is what he said on a TV interview a few years back:
"It hit me when I was given the Medal of Honor over at the Ellis Island thing, you know, because my parents came over from Italy although I was born here in New Haven, Connecticut. But, you know, I took it upon myself to speak that day about the people that were around me, generals, admirals, police chiefs, everything that you could possibly imagine, all from different parts of the world who have come to this country to make this great country.
And people forget that, you know, people forget that they came from people from the other side, you know. It’s an amazing country. People just don’t realize how wonderful this place is. And they just take it as a lock and ‘oh yes, I deserve this.’ You don’t deserve anything. You’ve got to prove that you’re a good American by being an American. That’s what I feel anyway."
For once on these sunday shows when a senator from one party says another senator from a opposing party as "my good friend" to answer "We're not friends! I hate your guts!".
JUST FOR ONCE, cause you know these guys really hate each other!
Did you see him on Fox and Friends a year or two ago? Whe Steve Doocy asked him how he stayed so active? And Ernest kind of leaned over as if to confide in Doocy (although his mic picked it up perfectly) and said "I masturbate…a lot". Pretty awful mental picture there….
I'm sure it's on youtube somewhere
I am the same way. I do not necessarily feel depraved by boycotting leftist performers. Good example: I was a Matt Damon fan and was in a scene with him in one of his films (scene got cut) until he started bad mouthing Sarah Palin. Now I do not watch his stuff and I do not miss it. The performer losses , not me. When I was in the business, so much of your work availability depends on whether or not you are a leftist. I was sitting in conservatory one day in NYC and heard a guy across the isle from me say, "Of course I am a Democrat. I am an actor." I could only stare, speechless. So it does mean something if you boycott them. Ernest is a Navy Vet, solid family man, and stamp collector. In his Wiki biography, I could not see mention of studying at any of the NYC or LA communist acting schools. That is always a sure fire leftist tell. Ernest started as a working acting and has continued to be one. I have heard him say some left leaning things on TV just recently but given his history, I would not put him in the category of the rabid left leaning liberals. I will continue to watch him perform.
Didn't we celebrate this ultimate dude in June too? Ah, he deserves it.
"Of course I'm a mindless, obedient, intolerant drone. I'm an actor!"
There, I translated it.
I'm always amazed that that startling action scene starts with just two words "Let's go." Can you imagine a director (or a writer) having that much confidence in a scene today?
Anybody see the telethon for Haiti on Friday?
He was in Merlin's Shop of Mysticall Wonders, and for that, I will always be grateful.
Congratulations Mr. Borgnine. I'm so sorry that my strongest mental image of your work is Airwolf.
Mr. Borgnine was in the first PG movie I ever saw: The Poseiden Adventure. This film sticks out in my mind mainly because you don't give a fig about any of the characters and really don't care if any of them are saved because they are so obnoxious. Borgnine leads the way as a loud crass cop who screams his lines.
I prefer to remember him in McHale's Navy. Loved that show as a small kid. Also, he played a tear-jerking role as an angel on Little House on the Prairie. (Is there any other kind on that show?)
Happy 93rd Birthday Mr. Borgnine! You will be known by our youngest generation for your work as Mermaid Man in SpongeBob Squarepants. An inspired casting choice!
Saw him on Ice Station Zebra last night as a Russian who went over to the West but turned out to be a double agent. A character of that much nuance seemed a little beyond his capabilities. I though Jim Brown did a better job than EB, sadly. Still, it was interesting seeing Rock Hudson as a submarine commander confronting Soviet paratroopers at the North Pole. And not an actress in the whole production.
YOU ROCK ERNIE!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
I spent a lot of time with my grandparents while growing up. My grandpa used to watch old reruns of "McHale's Navy." And I've seen him in several sappy Hallmark movies the past few years (I'm a girl, what can I say?) The funniest picture I have in my head about EB was when Michael Moore gave his tirade a few years back at the Oscars. When the camera panned to the audience EB looked really angry. I think he could have taken MM.
Happy B-day, Mr. Borgnine!
Tuesdays coverage of Browns election victory was a sight to behold. MSNBC was blowing up withe the likes of Matthews, Olberfraud, and Madcow. Their tirades of how could this happen. It was fitting that Matthews was sitting in a pub, probably knocking down a few to drown his rage. Madcow with her stupid facial expressions and rolling of the eyes. Olberfraud with his usual rants. Over at CNN you could depend on Begalia and his usual moronic over the top remarks.( Me thinks that Begala, when he was a kid was the class tattler and instigator that got his A%%S kicked after school.) All in All what a night, and a good victory.
Happy Birthday Brother Master Mason!
Yes…and it's almost ruining him for me because I look at him and all I can think of is a 90 year old jacking off. ew.
I hope the money gets to the right place. I liked the performances. It was a horrible shock to see how Muhammad Ali looks, though. And bless his heart, Clint Eastwood finally looks kind of frail and elderly.
Who cares about his political affiliation. All I ask is that for the few hours, or minutes, while onscreen or in song give it the best you've got. Ernest Borgnine's Hall of Fame: Marty, From Here to Eternity, The Wild Bunch, Emperor of the North, and yes even as Rogo in The Poseidon Adventure. Don't really remember McHale's Navy but to have such an acting range is something to be proud of. Happy Birthday Ernie!
Happy birthday, Mr. Borgnine!
My favorite memories are: Jesus of Nazareth, The Black Hole, Airwolf, and television's The Single Guy.
Beh… no mention of Ernie as General Worden in The Dirty Dozen? That trademark twinkle in his eyes when he realized that the dozen outsmarted his top officers in the test exercise is priceless to me.
Ernest Borgnine NEVER gave a bad performance or was ever anything but memorable. Even when he was in a stinker like "The Oscar" (playing a corrupt private eye) he just hit his marks and let it rip. He is part of one of the all-time great iconic images in film history – The penultimate scene from "The Wild Bunch" where Ernie, Bill Holden, Ben Johnson and Warren Oates purposefully walk fromt the brothel to what they know will be their doom. After watching the confrontation between Borgnine and Burt Lancaster in "From Here to Eternity" yo have to hit pause and mop up the testosterone. Happy Birthday to one of the all time best!!!!
I was old enough to see reruns of McHale's Navy and he was great – in charge – but one of the guys -which is a tough acting job to pull off well all the time, but he did it.
Years later when I had my own large "ish" (not PT Boat large – mid 20 feet) I would hum the theme to McHale's Navy to myself as I powered up and pulled on to plane crossing Lake Travis near Austin. You just reminded me of that. Thanks.
Ahhh…I dunno Ernie … What do you wanna do tonight…….Happy Birthday Buddy.
This sounds good! Borgnine, Broderick Crawford and Neville Brand! THE MOB – 1951
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0043812/ (edited)
"An exceptional lesser-known example of Film Noir, 28 May 2008
Author: planktonrules from Bradenton, Florida
"Broderick Crawford plays a cop who goes undercover to infiltrate the mob. And to make them think he's "their kind of guy" he comes into town with a major attitude and a willingness to slug anyone who gets in his way.
I particularly loved the very tense and rather violent ending in the hospital—you just have to see it to understand.
This film has………one of the ugliest casts in film history!! That's why when I saw this film starred Broderick Crawford (king of the hard-drinking ugly actors), Ernest Borgnine and Neville Brand (the scariest looking thug in film history) I was thrilled to see it."
@Traintracker –
You know, after reading some of the subsequent posts here, there seems to be a growing indication that you don't know what you're talking about.
Joe Mantell, (now 90 y/o) who played Angie in both the TV and film versions of MARTY is still alive and well. What fun it would be to see him and Borgnine together again.
I was privileged to work with Ernest Borgnine years ago, on a television show, "The Single Guy". The man was a consummate professional but what I remember most was how gracious he was, between takes with me, sharing a story or two about his experiences working in Hollywood. Such a good guy. I had a ball.
I would add, "Bad Day at Black Rock" and "The Flight of the Phoenix" to the wonderful list of films previously mentioned. And yes, growing up, I never missed an episode of "McHale's Navy". Pure joy.
Happy Birthday, Ernest Borgnine, a stand up guy and one of the all-time greats.
Speaking of McHale's Navy, can we all agree his best work is as the voice of Mermaid Man (with Tim Conway as Barnacle Boy to boot(?
Of this there can be no debate!
I have to admit, "The Oscar" is one of my all time guilty pleasures. Just delicious. Stephen Boyd is such a heel and a hoot. And God bless Tony Bennett, but here…all I can say is…wow.
Go Jets!!
@Jimmy Arone –
"The Flight of the Phoenix" – great film…and one of the last great James Stewart pictures.
There is a great gag shot from the film that has the entire male cast of the picture standing on the wings of the plane looking at the camera. Then the next shot has them all facing the other way and looking downward as if they are urinating. Can't find it and can't recall where I saw it. American Cinematographer years ago, perhaps.
Two things come to mind: "I dunno, Angie. What do you wanna do?" — and taking that long walk with Bill Holden, Warren Oates and Ben Johnson to the greatest last stand in movie history.
Happy Birthday, Mr. B!
You realize that everyone masterbates, right?
I love him in every thing he was in including "The Devil's Rain" and "Airwolf!" Happy Birthday, Mr Borgnine! Your autobiography was a fun read!
Of course! But I'm not sure I want to hear them talk about it in public. (and yes, I know Borgnine was making an aside)
I hope you meant "deprived" rather than "depraved." Depraved more accurately describes those performers that you boycott.

how about his role as "fatso Jutson" The army sargent in "FROM HERE TO ETERNITY"….Hr can do it all
Geez, where does traintracker get the "leftist loon" tag? He's a fine actor and seems pretty far from left. I'd like to see some evidence of this as hanging a tag on someone (in this case leftist) without backing up the statement is a tactic of the typical liberal.
His story of his short-lived marriage to Ethel Merman – lasted all of 30 days or so – is sorta funny. Ethel was making his life hell because he was getting more fan mail for McHale's Navy than she – and after 30 days or so he said something to the effect, "Madam, I am out of here".
Thanks…very cool.
dont forget the B movie classic "Barrabas" with jack Palance & Anthony Quinn !!!!
I forgot, we have to get our entertainment through television and movies. It's the law. No thank you. I think we can do better if we try. This is why actors are rich. We make them so. Without us, they would be nothing. By my choice, however, I have appreciated Ernie.
Happy Birthday to a great American and a wonderful actor.
Mr. Borgnine is one of the last movie stars still standing. While he may have been in a few bad movies, he was never bad hisself. Teamed with Hollywood titans like Tracy ,Holden,Ryan he was never eclipsed. He could tear up the screen with the best of the beat Costars like Walter Brennan and Anthony Quinn! Damned good on Songebob Square pants also! HAPPY BIRTHDAY TROOPER…Good Work! Wishing you another 96 years of good fortune!
As wrong as the politics of the right wing might be, any place wishing a happy birthday to Ernest Borgnine can't be all bad. Turner Classic Movies recently aired "The Catered Affair" with Bette Davis. Excellent little drama with some brief comedy.
Borgnine is a great unsung backer of the United States Navy, having served as a Bluejacket himself before he was an actor. He routinely shows up at just about any Navy function to which invited. All below the radar to keep the focus on the Sailors involved. I don't know where Traintracker gets off calling him a "leftist loon" referring to some non-specific "liberal rant". Nothing like a BS defamatory accusation for Borgnine or his fans here to have to refute. Yo Traintracker! Where's your proof?
Now, that… THAT… That's what true leftists do to their political enemies: They concoct baseless accusations of wrongdoing that gain a life of their own when not vigorously disproven. That's right out of Alinsky's book. Let's just say for the purpose of this blog stream that Ernest Borgnine is a great American character actor whose politics are not knowable — and irrelevant at any rate. God bless you, Ernie! Jeff Cole/Marine Rifleman (In Repose).
