Name this movie: An ace CIA operative, condemned as a rogue and now hunted by the Company, bashes and crashes his way through colorful foreign settings, pursued by heavily armed hit men, while back at Langley headquarters an inscrutable deputy director and one of his top lieutenants are arousing the...

I can't wait to see this movie!! As you mentioned, the cast is superb and the movie looks amazing!!
I am excited, I may actually go to a theater to see this. LOL
Saw the ad last night. Denzel supports our soldiers. I'll be checking this one out more closely.
I'm kind of on the fence with this one. Although it does have Mila Kunis…
It's good to know 30 years into a post-apocalyptic world, as shown in the preview at 1:25, women can still get hair care and makeup products.
But, yeah, I'm still going to see it.

Does Denzell remember to use is contrived lisp – sometimes he forgets.
This one is definitely on my list. Denzel Washington is the man….
Mila Kunis is a bonus…..stupid restraining order…….
There are days I would vote for Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington for president and vice president.
I wasn't really interested (mostly because of the January release date) until I found out (via the film's Wikipedia page) that the titular book is a copy of the Bible. Now I am very much interested.
I am a big fan of post-apocolyptic movies and other media (Fallout series-video game). I personally can't wait to see this flick. I just hope they don't mess up a perfectly good premise with political garbage.
Not in that order, but I'm with you….
Denzel is The Man, Oldman is gold, the Hughes Brothers are top shelf, and the trailer definitely grabbed me. On my short list of movies to see. I only wish that list was a lot longer. Take what I can get these days.
The fight scenes looked a little over-choreographed and hokey. As much as I am a Denzel fan, he just isn't the action movie type. He's better playing the kind of guy who duct tapes your hands to a steering wheel and cuts your fingers off one-by-one.
War, war never changes…
All the visuals of this film remind me of the Fallout series, not that that's a bad thing. I'm actually curious about this one.
Is Denzel conservative? I just saw the mention that he supports our soldiers and wondered as I've never heard any crazy left rumors about him before. I know Gary Oldman is conservative, and more to the point Oldman is possibly the greatest actor who ever lived – the dude is a freaking chameleon, always flawless in every aspect, and I'm a huge fan of his work (even in the really stupid films his characters are good). This movie looks ten kinds of awesome and I'm going to be seeing it in theaters.
Denzell gave big bucks to Obama, so I doubt he's conservative. But, he's said many things in the past, publicly, that indicate that he most certainly isn't yet another typical liberal Hollywood 'actor'. Best guess: he's moderate, but supported Obama big-time because….well, you know. Kinda like Michael Jordan supporting someone because they attended North Carolina; kindred spirits & all. Meh, Denzel is such a good guy I couldn't care less about his politics.
Everyone Youtube Reggie Reg's impersonation of Denzel doing Training Day & you'll be glad that you did.
I like him as an actor, I only wish he would have actually researched the real Hurricane Carter before he made the movie and the following statements glorifying him. He turned a murderer into a hero, which sickens me and I hope he didnt do it just to try and win an oscar. He said "This man is love", well, no, that man was human garbage.
Looks like Denzel prepping for the Richie Havens biopic.
Denzel has written personal checks to The Fisher House – while he's been there, meeting with every injured soldier. Not small checks either – nice round 7 figure kind of checks. And he did it without the media knowing he was there; photos I've seen were taken by the soldiers and their families.
Whatever his politics may be – the man gives alot of money to our troops and never tells anyone about it.
I'm with you on Gary Oldman. He's the prototypical scene-stealer. Oldman as Jim Gordon in the last 2 Batman flicks was inspired casting, he brought life to what would otherwise be a throw away character. I've never seen him in a role that I didn't like.
This movie looks very intriguing, I'll definitely be seeing it. Most of what Hollywood makes is boring dreck but there's one preview that I saw recently and thought it has potential to be epic: Legion. I hope someone here does a review of this film.
Agreed. The very definition of a class act.
Hooked by the preview, LOVE Denzel. The only disappointment would be if his Bible is actually a hollowed-out container of Unobtanium or some other cheap Hollywood device.
I like that it's Denzel doing something a little bit different than his typical role. Like Training Day, I think he really shines when he gets out of the box. Eagerly awaiting a John Nolte review!
i'm about 100% more interested in this than in Avatar
Nice that the trailer doesn´t give away half the movie! We see that far too often. Looks very promising.
But I do not get this love for the actors at all. I appreciate good acting but I NEVER watch a movie just because of the stars (though there are a few who will keep me away). Fact is, there are more good actors than there are good parts. There is no actor in the world who is a reliable indicator for a good movie. Whether they seem personally likeable does not matter at all, in my opinion.
I'm stoked about this. I've been feening for some future dystopia since I heard The Road didn't do justice to the book. I'll catch that one on DVD, but this one: the Book of Eli, in the theaters.
Denzel is Old School: Pure 100% Class, pure movie star, masculine, and all of that transcends any political leanings.
Gary Oldman is a god. That's he's a conservative god is what you call a bonus.
Denzel is looking long in the tooth and kinda' just goin' through the motions in this one.
I read on joblo.com that he did all the fight scenes himself, kinda doubt he would just go through the motions on anything he does on film. Doesn't seem the type.
You know … bringing up the Bible … last night there was a 'marathon' of "Chuck" on the SF channel. I never saw it b4 and only had it on in the background as I did stuff on the computer. In one episode they started playing "Silent Night." That alone was enough to watch a couple minutes, I mean how often is that one a TV show? Well … the secret agent girl, remember Silent Night Holy Night is playing, has a gun in the face of bad guy who is egging her on but is unarmed and has his hands behind his head. In the spirit of Christmas and in homage to the song. She puts a bullet through his head.
Just a F**king sick, depraved, morally bankrupt, moment just to … what? These things don't happen by accident. It was planned out, only to jab at Christianity's traditions. The audience for this crappy program is obviously the younger the better, prolly 12 to 25. This was just one of the thousands of stabs at propaganda the leftist media makes every day.
You get caught hiding in a tree outside her hotel ONCE and they label you for life….jeez…..
Freeman for President, Washinton for Vice President . . . Did you know that Morgan Freeman is against black history month.
I thought Freeman was another lefty nutcase.
I didn't know that, but I heard he was very much a liberal.
Oldman's character Drexel in True Romance was definitely a scene stealer. The guy is a quite an actor.
I thought he was too, but seems he has enough class to not wave it in people's faces.
From what I can tell, it's a Bible—allegedly the last copy on earth.
Freeman has played the role so many times, he probably could do a good job. Denzel is good at whatever he does.
He can definitely do it all, his turn as the maniacal cop in The Professional made the movie.
The fight scenes I've seen he just kind of stands there with his sword looking old.
I with you Great. Never heard of the thing until I saw a preview. It looks intriguing. Nolte? Are you reading this?
How about a pre review review? Is there a "liberal tell" sneaked in? Do we get sucker punched and blindsided with a "Bush did it" message? If so, I won't go.
C'mon guys… NOW the lefties are going to complain that all the conservatives are favoring "Eli". They're going to get very confused and you know what THAT smells like…
Denzel is an uber Obama fan. See his interview in Readers Digest. The man said no less than 5 times it's wonderful he's the first black President. You can not read that interview and not since he's a racist. I liked the man until I read his comments there. Now, just like most, he's just a good Hollywood actor, nothing more, nothing less.
http://www.joblo.com/video/joblo/player.php?video...
I could have sworn I hear him last night narrating the intro to CBS Evening News with Katie Couric.
Everything I send in the mail uses cut-out letters from magazines. Sheesh.
Yes, but you MUST remember to wipe off fingerprints. Oh, and do it in a clean room, so that pesky DNA doesn't get in the way.
I have heard a very different take on Denz from another actor but I do like him in the movies. I would never pay to see a movie by Clooney, Penn or Mr Sarandon again but if picked movies just because of the actors political views I couldn't set foot in many theaters.
Teen Spirit?
Denzel Washington said he plays a "killing machine" in this movie. I love killing machines.
Victory?
Penn, Clooney, Damon and one or two others. They just went too far out of their way to let me know the extent of their contempt.
Don´t get me wrong, I like Denzel and I´m very glad he shows class in his public persona. But I don´t think there is such a thing as a Denzel-Washington-movie or a Johnny-Depp-movie. The few actors whose presence tells you about the kind of movie you are going to see are actions stars like Chuck Norris or clowns like Jim Carrey (most of the time). I used to be fixated on directors, but less so today. We have seen so many young brilliant guys who just faded out.
Could be, but without more information it is pure guesswork. My heart sank when I saw the Avatar trailer. This looks interesting.
In a rush this morning, I simply stated above that Denzel supports our soldiers. Now, for a bit more information. There has been an e-mail circulating for a good while about Denzel, which is not altogether true.
The true story can be found at: http://www.snopes.com/politics/military/denzel.as... It is worth reading. Make sure you are reading the real story below, not the "reported" story from the e-mail.
In 2004, Denzel visited Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, where he presented 3 Purple Hearts. He later made a "sizeable" donation to The Fisher House Foundation, which provides housing for the visiting families of our wounded soldiers. That is why I said, "Denzel supports our soldiers." How many other celebrities have been through San Antonio, and other cities with military facilities, and never even paid a visit, let alone took part in a ceremony.
It looks like a rockin´ good action movie. The plot summary according to Wikipedia:
After God loses faith in humanity, the archangel Michael (Paul Bettany) is the only one standing between mankind and the apocalypse. This time using angels as the act of Biblical judgment, God's wrath descends on Earth to exterminate the world's population.
Angels fighting angels, Matrix-style? Not sure what Christians will make of it.
I put nothing past the entertainment industry, but I honestly don´t think it was planned out. They thought contrasting the song with the murder was "ironic". Which it is. I´d bet a month´s wages they didn´t think about it more than that. We have seen it a million times in movies and on tv: crimes happening or someone getting killed with a lullaby or a love song in the background. It´s an old cliche, James. Let´s not make it worse than it is.
Is it possible that themovie is about the former president 'Barak Obama wandering the America he helped create while delusionally believing that he is protecting the one book that can save humanity, and that book is the last copy of his autobiography? Just wondering.
Having seen "The Road" and read the book… I felt the movie did indeed do the book justice, as much as any movie of that book could, since the lyricism of McCarthy's writing can never truly make the transition to film. I think it's a shame that it had such limited release that people are judging it on what they've "heard" instead of waiting to judge it after seeing it firsthand.
As for "Book of Eli", much as I admire Mr. Washington's acting and quality of his character, I'll probably see it on DVD.
As a Christian, I'm not holding my breath on Legion.
CBR</bl> adds this about Washington's fight training for the movie:
In order to shoot "Eli's" fight sequences, Washington trained with Jeff Imada and Danny Inosanto, practitioners of Jeet Kune Do; the discipline developed by Bruce Lee. "What I learned from these masters, like Danny Inasanto, is he lets that energy come toward him and he goes through it. He's like seventy-some-odd years old and so fluid and just a great fighter. I said I didn't want to be karate man, but just moving through people," he explained.
"I worked with Danny a bit. Four or five months out, we started stretching and moving…just getting into the whole vibe. When you get older, stretching is good. I don’t do it enough, but it helps a lot," Washington recalled. The training included work with swords, and when asked if he has kept up with swordplay, the actor answered, "There's a part of me that definitely wants to continue [the discipline], but then there's the actor part that also says I got to put that down, I'm not that guy now. I've got to play another guy."

Growltiger, I normally go into movies with low expectations. Book Of Eli however looks good and I'm expecting an entertaining movie. I really hope I'm not disappointed.
That's why Denzel has endured so long in the movie business. He understands that the audience doesn't want actor to bash them over the head with PC propaganda or act like a jerk off camera.
Moviegoers like myself simply want to see actors putting their all in a quality movie.
Gory Allegory!
Looks promising. We'll get it here in Tokyo after you guys (the movie, not the apocalypse), so I'll have to close my eyes and ears to prevent hearing the reveal.
Judging by the trailer, and the biblical reference it looks like a cross (no pun intended) between I am Legend and Earth Abides with some Road Warrior sans roads thrown in, no?
Here's Morgan Freeman's classic commentary on Black History Month:

I agree El Gordo, it looks like a rocking good time. My other moniker, Apollyon- the angel of the bottomless pit, is a character right out of the Legion theme. In this movie however Apollyon doesn't seem to have a role; it is the other two archangels, Michael and Gabriel, that are the main characters. Interestingly though it seems they applied some of Apollyon's characteristics to Gabriel. It is Apollyon who has a legion of locusts as his army but in this movie Gabriel is leading the army of angels.
I would also add that my theological beliefs are expressed in this movie. I have never considered Satan or the other archangels as adversaries to God but rather instruments of God. The Destroyer [Apollyon] was sent by God to kill the first born sons of all those that did have the mark of lambs blood on their door and to pass over the Jews homes that were marked. Apollyon also took the Pharaohs first born son. This is where the Jewish high holiday of Passover is derived from. I myself am Jewish and I'm not sure how Christians will view this movie but I'm very excited to see it.
Nicely done- you win! Please claim your prize; it is being held at Mila Kunis' house.
Me too but I hate how they always get glitchy the day after the warranty expires.
Finally.. Gary Oldman playing a villian again!! I love Oldman but I couldn't take too many more boring "Commissioner Gordon"-type roles
That actually counts for a lot. Conservative, Democrat, Christian, atheist, homosexual, whatever. Just shut up about it and don't wave it in my face.
Another great line from Legion…………
Dennis Quaid: "I don't even believe in God"
The good archangel: "The Father doesn't believe in you either."
There is not one impressive thing in that clip. There is a 55 year old man that never moves more two steps from his starting place and flings around his arms a little bit and throws a half-hearted kick.
Sorry but it just ain't Jet Li there.
You too? Thought I recognized the handle. Man, that judge was tough, eh?
You did…………….As of 4 January 2010, Freemans voice replaced Cronkites.
They recently filmed scenes of his newest movie (Unstoppable) about a runaway train, near my parents home in the woods of north central Pennsylvania. The locals said he was a complete diva. Too much maintenance.
Sorry, the Hughes brothers suck. Has anyone seen Menace II Society? What a horrible, depraved piece of garbage. Ditto for From Hell.
Seriously now. Don't look too deeply for some "conservative" message just because the MacGuffin is the Bible.
50 yards…? Man, is that excessive, or what?
Has it occurred to anyone this maybe another Avatar in respects to it's politics? Ok, maybe not that bad but … Does anyone have a synopsis of this? Ya, a guy carries a book around and kills people. You know the book could be "Earth in da lurch", "It takes a village," or "An Incomprehensible Tooth." Know what I'm saying? This IS hollywood after all.
I love Denzel (and even enjoyed the Pelham 123 remake), but this movie just sort of looks like a rehash of rehashes. I don't like the washed out palette, and while I don't think the Hughes Brothers suck as much as GreatAjax, they've been out of the loop for quite some time. Why do I suspect that after a lot of fighting, screaming, and stuff blowing up, the Book of Eli will turn out to be DA DA DUM! Blank.
That's nice to know since I always liked Denzel as an actor.
Good post. Interesting comment that no actor makes you go to a film but there are actors who make you stay away. Never thought of it that way, but you're right. If George C. Looney is in it, I don't go. Can't see him as a character, only that Looney Clooney acting cutsey. If Sean Penn is in it, ditto. He always looks as though someone in his near vicinity passed gas. His political statements emphasize his gross stupidity. (Denzel, Freeman and others might be liberals or even lefties, but they don't sound dumb as a brick when they talk about it – if they talk about it).
As a Christian, I would just ignore it. Legion, I mean. The premise is so completely ridiculous (as far as theology goes) I almost laughed out loud in the theater when I saw the preview. Michael wasn't the rebellious angel; Lucifer was. Paul Bettany should have been named Lucifer. But then, if they had done that, I REALLY would have fell out of my chair laughing. "My name is Lucifer, and I'm here to help you." LOL
I said there are days. Like when I see the movie "Man on Fire" or "Glory." The character bleeds into the individual. I know about Denzels lib status, but in every liberal there is a conservative spirit dieing to strut its stuff.
looking good so far
Don't know enough about either man to make a vote coll, but I do like one thing that Morgan Freeman said… When asked what America could do about racism, freeman answered “How are we going to get rid of racism? Stop talking about it!”

@James. I was wondering the same things as you. I am highly suspicious of this movies agenda.
Not one first lady joke with the Morgan Freeman/Grand Daughter thing. I'm disappointed.
When does Kenshiro show up?
I saw the trailer for this and the idea looks interesting. But when you bring the Bible into it, it's one of those things that could be really great, or really… not. I'll be eager to hear the reports on it!
I admit, THAT is funny.
They're both liberals, but they're not assholes about it, unlike so many Hollywood types. It's not a person's politics per se that will keep me out of a theater, but how much of an asshole they are about their politics.
Morgan Freeman did a 4th of July reading of the Declaration of Independence here in Philly a few years back. He prefaced it by saying, "Our Founding Fathers might have been surprised to see me here – I'm black – but I don't think they would have been disappointed."
He's the son of a preacher man & takes his faith seriously.
Great line. It shows love and respect for this country. And you know, what, he's 100% right – they would NOT have been disappointed. They would have been ELATED to see that; to see the culmination of their grand idea for a country where ALL are created equal.
Again, he may be liberal, but he's probably more of a JFK type liberal and not the lefty crazy socialist nuts we have today.
I've always liked Denzel because (1) he's an incredible actor and wonderful in any role and makes you forget that it's a role at all and (2) he's never acted like other liberal actors – shoving it in my face or doing films that denigrate our country, our values, our soldiers, etc.
And to hear that Oldman is a CONSERVATIVE! OMG! I'm just beyond elated. Because, like Washington, he's such a wonderful actor, bringing it in every film he does and now I know that he is also HIGHLY INTELLIGENT! LOL!
Such wonderful news. And yes, I'm planning on seeing it because it looks interesting.
This is a little off topic, but last night I was watching part of the third season of The Unit and listening to the commentary in the episode where (spoiler ahead if you haven't seen it yet!) Demore Barnes's character is killed. The episode's writer and four of the five main actors (all except Foley) were on the commentary. Although all were clearly expressing thanks to the troops, at one point Dennis Haysbert came as close as he possibly could to a Bush-bashing monologue without actually naming Bush. I was pretty surprised. I guess that's good in that I didn't know he was a liberal, so he apparently fits in with Freeman and Washington. Still disappointing, though.
I was thinking the same thing about the girl's makeup. "Wait up, I think I might have found some mascara in this rubble!"
Wait a sec, you're comparing Denzel Washington to a guy that's been training in Kung Fu his entire life?? Seriously?? You should wait til The Expendables comes out then….
I understand that he ain't Jet Li, but Jet Li ain't Denzel Washington either.
