Name this movie: An ace CIA operative, condemned as a rogue and now hunted by the Company, bashes and crashes his way through colorful foreign settings, pursued by heavily armed hit men, while back at Langley headquarters an inscrutable deputy director and one of his top lieutenants are arousing the...

In all fairness, is there anyone who could have improved on Fonda, except maybe for Steinbeck himself?
The video is private numnuts….please post a public one…i hate matt damon
here I was all ready with my popcorn and uff, both videos are not playing.
I didn't really want to eat that popcorn anyway.
Does Damon claim authorship of The Grapes of Wrath too?
No, that's Gore.
Matt couldn't even beat Jane Fonda in an act-off…
I know this isn't what you meant, but when you asked if anyone could improve, the guys from South Park popped into my head.
Channeling Damon "A work of this stature is to important to belong to any one person, it belongs to humanity."
MD is about as introspective as a block of wood. Even though Fonda's video was blocked, I remember the scene. Masterful acting v. Meandering mediocrity. The comparison is stunning.
Maaaatttt Daaaaammmmoonnnn
To be fair, Matt obviously hasn't memorized the script, so his reading schoolboy delivery is sort of natural.
But no question about it, Fonda was great.
Funny thing by the way, that little speech about people taking care of each other and not needing no cops to bring order is pretty conservative, and is in fact as relevant to the fight against the lefties today as it was against the powers that were in 1930's America.
To quote Team America, "I'm Matt Damon!"
truth is we didn't care much for the original, either…
Although there is a good 'Grapes of Wrath' story. Seems Stalin wanted to show the film to the Soviet masses to prove how corrupt and evil America was. So, they showed it all over the USSR.
Trouble is, even the depression era America showed poor people owning CARS. Something exrtremely rare in old soviet union. The experiment backfired miserably, as citizens grew even more uneasy about their own situation. Stalin originally loved the idea but thepoor result led him to mass banishments to the gulags…
A real lesson to be learned there.
So what you're saying since there is no Fonda video, that Matt Damon is not better than nothing? _____Cool.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWTzyU5MFgM
I don't much think that the National Route 66 Alliance will give Matt DEMON a "John Steinbeck" award anytime soon.
Thanks for that nice little pick-me-up. We both agree he was the absolute best he could be in Team America World Police
Why did Damon's have to be the one that WASN'T blocked?
Looks like the FOX lawyers have risen early this morning. Must have smelled money.
I could care less about Matt Damon. What respect I had for him from the Bourne movies he pissed away with his political nonsense.
Howard Zinn??? Seriously???
I wonder if Damon would approve of Steinbeck being anywhere near the nuclear codes? I'm just saying…we're talking about the nuclear codes, here.
Ever since Matt Damon produced Howard Zinn's "People's History of the United States" for the history channel, his true Marxist colors have been shown clearly. Imagine a history of the USA from a MARXIST perspective! The guy is a rabid radical leftist! He's now BANNED from my movie-viewing and television!
Just like the rest of his elitist left wing loonies, Damon is trapped in FDR's 1930's. How many of his millions is he willing to part with to help the downtrodden. Actually, when you think about it, the Bush years were pretty good to his bank account. Hypocrite! Pull your head out of your @** Matt ! It's 2010 ! The year that will usher in the beginning of the end for dems, progressives, socialists, and marxists worldwide.
Well, you know, you make some huge blunder as despot and make thousands of innocents pay for it with imprisonment. Sounds fair to me. Besides, they were probably a bunch of kulaks standing in the way of the workers' paradise anyway.
I believe that the vast majority of this generation of Hollywood actors is so out of touch with the heart and soul of America and what it means to be an American and what America has meant to the world that they cannot comprehend in the slightest just where writers such as Steinbeck were coming from. This guy Damon sounds like a pre-schooler at life. He can't even fake it.. He doesn't understand. The way he read that was just so … flat and heartless. No life. Dead.
I'm with you there. I'll never be able to suspend disbelief, as far as Matt goes. He's just another Progressive wussbag. I can't watch 24 anymore, after the Global Warming PSAs.
Well I think they learned their lesson after the mess that is Janine Garofolo, according to a link posted here on BH yesterday 24 is returning to it's roots. I'll give it a shot, but if the PC crapola continues then I'll find something else to do on Monday nights.
The leftist takeover of American education explains the ignorance not only of Matt Damon, but the current administration in Washington, D. C. If you really want to be horrified, go to your nearest college bookstore and look at some of the liberal arts textbooks. It was a stroke of genius for folks like Wm. Ayers to go into the field of education. I taught at our local community college and the atmosphere on campus is toxic; there is no self-consciousness among the faculty about mocking and belittling conservatives and people of faith. And if you think "objective" classes like the sciences are not affected, I took an introductory science course at my school in which the young instructor managed to insult Sarah Palin and mid-Western fundamentalists while teaching geology!
lesson: beware the 'good idea' you bring to aforementioned despot. Think it through…
THIS I can attest to!!! I was taking a simple TECHNICAL course to learn how to us a particular program for Geographical Information Systems, and the prof never failed to make some Public Service Announcement about environmentalism. Even had the audacity to say that sunspots had nothing to do with weather patterns on Earth. This in a class where all I needed to learn was how to use a computer program!!!! I was infuriated and ended up dropping the class for more than just that reason…but now Im gunshy about where else I'll have to deal with this…
Damon ruins movies. I think it's his nose that ercks me the most. It's weird and boxy.
O.K., I'll give it another shot, otherwise I'll be at the range, or the shooting house, though, everytime I go there, I feel I'm shortening my life, breathing the lead fumes.
you're missing out. Those are great flicks!
Love how most of the comments just bag on Damon… does anyone really care about watching an old b&w with Henry Fonda? (You know, the old guy from "On Golden Pond")
Love how you show up with nothing really to say….
Those are great flicks, but Damon's silly political nonsense has tarnished them for me.
I happen to like a lot of Henry Fonda's movies, especially "The Lady Eve" and "My Darling Clementine". I know his politics were left of center, but he was never obnoxious about it. The man was a life long friend of James Stewart, a staunch Republican.
Says the guy with the Matt Damon avatar. Lol.
Sucks. I liked the Bourne movies and now it's just not the same. Why can't actors shut up and act?
saw the first one where he got teary eyed over his target and knew we we're getting what Doug Liman called 'A Republican book became a Democrat movie'… some of the action was shot well but Damon always looked like he misplaced his letter sweater. Greengrass's sequels were inferior in style and none of them really had any substance othen than the 'bad CIA' plots from the 70's.
So while you have many who'll agree with you on this please excuse us from the list…
Hah! Cartman wouldn't be able to get the words out of his mouth!
Considering how left-wing Steinbeck was, yeah, I think they probably can.

Wow, Matt! What a flat boring read.
Wherever there is a cop beain' up a guy . . .
Steinbeck definitely leaned left, but he was more libertarian than socialist. In fact, he was repeatedly scolded by the left after WWII for not fulling their wildest dreams they had for him. It turned out he was his own man as are many artists.
There are many of us who do not like the corporations who feel they are above the rules. They get in bed with government to produce safe, comfortable monopolies and find other ways to restrict competition. Just because we speak out against big business and corporations does not automatically make us socialists or lovers of governmental control over business….in fact it is usually the opposite, and therefore, where true conservatism (objectivism) should ultimately lie.
Damon is a commie douche who is not a great actor!
Just hearing Matt Damon read the words made me realize how much I truly hated Grapes of Wrath.
Now, THIS is a reading:

His best role!
Please tell me he's not gearing up, at his age, to play Tom Joad in a re-make? Please tell me there is not going to be a "new Hollywood" remake. Please?
As an actor, Matt plays a pretty good social studies teacher.
Gary Sinise did a terrific Tom Joad on Broadway back in 1990. There's a video of him somewhere doing the "I'll be there" speech. It's pretty damn awesome.
Matt Damon is yet another actor who sucks badly when affecting a rural, southern/Appalachian accent.
Improper capitalization, coarse language, "…" in the middle of a sentence for no reason. I'm gonna take a wild stab here and guess you were an English major in college.
Sadly, that's probably true.
Hey, don't pick on him, Team America is some of Damon's greatest work.
Right about now, I'm all for some global warming.
Because it would be a crime to not share their keen insight into the larger world of politics, global ecology, and plastic water bottles.
I hear Vegas has even odds on Sheryl Crow getting the Nobel Peace Prize over her treatise on single sheet toilet paper theory.
How many of his millions is he willing to part with to help the downtrodden
None that can be hidden in tax shelters. Remember narcissism plays a very large and important part of the modern liberal mind set.
People of that persuasion – particularly ubber rich ones – believe they make the exact right amount of money. Any one making less has had their fair share stolen by those who make more than they do. But as for them, they're right in the spot they should be.
That's what I thought too.
I liked the first one, I thought the second started a down hill slide, where fancy camera angles, and editing no longer enriched the work, but rather dragged it across the screen, limping to the finish line.
Haven't even bothered to watch the last one, what are they up to, 4 or 5?
sucks, to b damon
Agreed, especially Mister Rogers and The Longest Day.
For years Rogers was my favorite comedy movie.
Funny, it sounds almost like he was doing his Matthew McConaughey imitation again ….
Where ever there's a youngin' being taught America has at least some redeeming qualities….
Before he started spewing his mouth ya they WERE great flicks. but who can stomach the punk anymore, he is as dead as Penn when it comes to acting! And they all have dug their own grave supporting the dark machine they call Hussein! sucks 2 b damon.
damon is a figment of ur dissident borne imagination! Come back to reality and maybe those b/w vids will become classics to u 2! And damon needs to be bagged, and so I do it
.
I hear he's got a decent shot as the turtle in the opening sequence.
I have never understood Matt Damon's appeal. The only role where I thought he was most 'believable' , or most natural, was as Tom Ripley in 'The Talented Mr. Ripley' .
Portraying a lying,( ultimately a murdering) imposter seemed effortless.
This is close
http://sinisefans.org/grapes/
At the risk of getting booed, I thought he was great in Good Will Hunting and Dogma.
Next
Can't wait to hear Damon's interpretation of Eros the Alien's impassioned soliliquy during the gripping climax of "Plan Nine From Outer Space."
Expecting political conformity from movie stars is like expecting moral fiber from sports heros. Good luck with that!
Interesting. I haven't read the books yet, but the movies got me interested.
This whole "We are America, we are better than our Enemies" moralizing that the movies get into… was that invented for the movies but absent or different in the books?
I don't expect conformity, thats for liberals. I expect some professionalism from them to keep it to themselves instead of using their celebrity to push their own views on other people. He can be the biggest idiotic liberal on the planet, I don't need to know that about him or anyone.
Just act….entertain me….give me my money's worth without the side order of political nonsense.
I suppose you can't watch Viggo Mortensen either? James Cameron flicks… Sigorney Weaver… Sounds like there's a lot of movies you'd have trouble watching based on the views of the actors?
there's a 4th and further books, but just the books 1-3 were Robert Ludlum. Then its some other author.

The dude shot himself in the foot. Now he is just really really fun to laugh at. At the risk of sounding cliche: Maattttt Daaa-monnnnnnnn!
Agreed. It's nearly impossible to even watch those anymore after seeing his sneering, condescending hatred for anyone who doesn't agree with him.
That sneer is the face of the modern liberal movement. Believe me, I spent decades as one of them. When I could no longer take the hatred, the vile contempt, the total disgust of perfect strangers, simply because they did not march in lock step with me, I too was shown the sneer and the door.
They live in deep fear of anyone or anything that doesn't reinforce their world view.
That's the bad news.
The good news – actually great news – is most of them don't actually believe it, and when pressed will admit it. There's plenty of good people, well intentioned, decent people who just need to be shown there is a different way of thinking that does not center on lynching minorities.
Uhm, yes, Cog Diss, I do watch Fonda in old B & W's. He had something special. Oh yeah-talent.
it was an invention. Jason Bourne, from what we understand, was an amnesia victim but was fine with his line of work. The leftist subtext is new, as director Doug Liman pointed out in the first film. Never read the series; Ian Fleming and John LeCarre did it for us- but there was a very mediocre film with Richard Chamberlain (!) as Bourne made some time ago. Suffice to say that making a left wing action hero might appeal to Hollywood- and Matt Damon- but it seemed wholely unnecessary to us. Had it been that way from the beginning our take would no doubt be different…
I am going to have to look for that.
You Sir or Madame have obviously never seen his brilliant performance in Team America World Police!
MAAAAT DAAAAAAAAAMON!!!!!
thanks for responding.
Although I have to say your consistent usage of plural 1st person pronounce ("us") makes me wonder if you are member of the Borg. True to your conformist form.
yeah but then, its a free country! While you are not arguing for their censorship, your point is that they should self-sensor as a professional edict? I suspect that's only because you disagree with the views they happen to be espousing.
it's a literary device meant to take one's ego out of the debate and keep it from (hopefully) becoming personal. Also, too there is a very small group of (yes, us) who share experiences and weigh in as well… so a convoluted reply is yes, we are The Borg. Reistance is futile…
please, now Matt checked his actuarial tables and that's exactly how Steinbeck intended it to be read! Now that's just good third grade level reading. oh what a beautifully small mind.
Damon's finest acting to date!
.
Shallow tepid Hollywood actors are ignorant and live in a bubble. Conservatives earn 65% more college degrees than liberals and pay more taxes. True, that's why liberals want free stuff from the government and their notions of government policy do more harm than good, especially to the poor… Munchausen by Proxy.
Their mantra that liberals are the intellectuals is actually 180 degrees from the truth.
.
This propaganda of dramatic ' readings' are supposed to be from ordinary Americans that made a difference. Joad was a fictional character of Steinbeck's. Dude, he ain't real. The public schools have failed.
as an aside, we wouldn't watch a Matt Damon film if WE were paid for it, and that includes his silly 'Bourne' trilogy…
I was infuriated and ended up dropping the class for more than just that reason…but now Im gunshy about where else I'll have to deal with this…
My instant thought too.
Let's have a REAL Act-off, John Wayne VS Henry Fonda… better yet let's just watch Fort Apache when ever Maaaaaatt Daaaamoooonn is mentioned.
Ok, I give you that, but he had the full backing of the Film Actors Guild
Actually, there was a TV remake that stayed really true to the book starring Gary Sinise who was fabulous.
That woud also include the vast majority of H'wood. I cringe everytime I have to see someone attempt a true Southern dialect. They usually sound somewhat like Vivien Leigh in GWTW. I like the show The Closer with Kyra Sedgwick, but I was born in ATL, so that accent of hers about kills me. Hey Kyra, if you're reading this, CALL ME! I can help you. Really.
