Beyonce Scores $2 Million to Perform for Dictator/Terrorist Family

On Sunday, Mediaite reported that singer Beyoncé Knowles had given a private New Year’s Eve performance for an exclusive crowd in St. Barth — and made the case that she had performed and been paid by relatives of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi (variously known as Khadafy, Qaddafi, Quadhafi and more). Atlanta-based blogger Necole Bitchie reported a $2 million fee; the UK Mirror reported a “six-figure sum” and yesterday Media Takeout made the same claim, repeating the $2 million number and confirming the Gaddafi-hosted party from a guest who was there (hip-hop impresario Russell Simmons also placed Beyoncé at a “Khadafy party.” Today Page Six confirms our original report, with one new piece of information: the party was thrown by Moutassim Gaddafi, known as Hannibal, son of the Libyan dictator who less than a week before made headlines for allegedly attacking his wife in a London hotel. …
It should be noted that Jay-Z also reportedly joined Carey last year in performing for the Gaddafi party, and that there was no backlash for either of them (indeed, Carey went on 20 days later to sing for President Obama’s inauguration — as did Beyoncé). However, this year Gaddafi’s history of terrorism has come to the fore with the release of Lockerbie bomber Abdel Basset Ali al-Megrah, the Libyan convicted of setting the bomb that took down Pan Am 103.

I can see it already. During an awards show, Kanye West will storm the stage and say, "Jennifer Hudson you had a great performance and I'm going to let you speak, but Beyonce had one of the best performances in front of a dictator, her performance was one of the best out there."

Considering how her husband Jay-Z is worth hundreds of millions, it's strange that the wife would take such a gig for a mere two million. I guess it's an ego thing.

I don't know if I'd take the job or not, but I think that probably I would. Yeah, for the money. That's the point of working, after all. (Performers do endorsements, but I don't think that's quite the same thing.)
In any case I've got a bit of an ideological problem with the notion of purity. It seems a "left" sort of thing. Not that I'm all fine with Obama speaking at an event that welcomed and showcased Robert Mugabe, but his *business* is politics. But there seems to be this huge push… see the You Tube video of Penn Jilette (sp) talking about appearing on Glenn Beck… to demand purity, to publicly shun those deemed unclean or ideologically impure. To NOT appear on Glenn Beck. Unclean! To vilify attendance, even as a journalist or blogger, at events where some "bad" person is attending or speaking. I think this is insidious and as it, so far at least, seems to come so strongly from the *left* I'm inclined to leave them with ownership of it.

Actually, I kind of like the message this sends. After all, Gaddafi basically abandoned his WMD plans after seeing what we did to Saddam.

Obviously it isn't of value for the American Beyonce to honor the dead Americans at Ghaddif's hands, but how about AFRICANS ,since this reeks of political agenda? Performing is not an endorsement of the audience if you don't actually *endorse* the audience any more than appearing on Glenn Beck to argue your case with him legitimizes and endorses Glenn Beck.

According to Forbes, Beyonce raked in 27 million in 2008. That doesn't factor in her husband's earnings. For the old folks, that would be Jay-Z, who's also similarly loaded. I can appreciate anonymous internet posters inclination to hold their nose take a 2 million dollar payday, but Beyonce is hardly hurting for cash. Being that she probably spends 2 million on hair relaxant alone, I can only conclude that she does specifically endorse Qaddafi's ideology.

Gaddafi is not just a dictator and a major sponsor of international terrorism (if not right now then often enough in the past). He launched pogroms lasting several days against black African migrants that have killed at least hundreds and led to the expulsion of tens of thousands. The Economist wrote about it circa ten years ago. Lybians mobs could not have lynched blacks unless Gaddafi condoned it.
