NJ Lawmakers Ask MTV to Cancel ‘Jersey Shore’

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) – MTV is getting more pressure to cancel its “Jersey Shore” reality show. The latest criticism comes from the New Jersey Italian American Legislative Caucus, which says the show promotes derogatory ethnic stereotypes and is “wildly offensive.”
In a letter sent Tuesday to the president of Viacom, MTV’s parent company, caucus chairman Joseph Vitale asks that the show be immediately taken off the air.
The state lawmakers also have asked advertisers to boycott the show, which focuses on eight tanned 20-somethings and their escapades in Seaside Heights, a popular New Jersey beach town.

I don't know, I kind of like the Jersey Shore. Not the show, I don't bother watching reality TV, does nothing for me. If I want to see idiots all I need do is go to work.
But from time to time my family vacations at Wild Wood Crest, and I like it.
"MTV has said its intention is not to stereotype or offend." But I thought that was the mission statement of their TV network.

Wow, and the Sopranos got a pass. 20 year old arrogant jerkoffs who do… nothing as far as I can see, and Tony Freakin Soprano. Which is the worse Italian stereotype?
How is a reality show about people living their daily life promoting a derogatory ethnic stereotype? Isn't that just who they are? The New Jersey Italian American Legislative Caucus is essentially telling the world that these stereotypes are true we just don't want them to be broadcast to the world. This degree of Political Correctness is silly.

This Italian-American group should worry more about the fact that there is a sizable subculture of morons in their midst that everyone enjoys laughing at. As a native Jerseyan I HATE being associated with these monkeys so MTV pisses me off for that reason, but I could not care less how the ginzos feel about it.

I just love it when government steps in and tells tv stations what shows they can run and which ones they should cancel. It warms the cockles of my heart to know they are looking out for me. My only choice prior to this was to simply not watch. Now I can't.

hey arnt nj l aw makers some of the most corrupt bunch of idiots around…what would be great is a show THE HALLS OF TRENTON…lots of fist pumping and wife beaters there.
I have to admit to watching episodes of a variety of Reality shows including some comically tragic ones such as 'My Super Sweet 16', and 'True Life'. Though I haven't seen 'Jersey Shore' it shouldn't be much worse than either of the aforementioned shows.
And if these shows provide an example for people of how *not* to act then shouldn't we be praising them? I don't think people are actually tuning in to Reality TV because they associate with these characters or think they represent a wide swath of specific groups of people.
I can't bring myself to give a #$%^ about this show or MTV. That crap has ruined much of my generation.
Given a choice between the Guidos on the Jersey Shore and the folks running NJ, spray me with fake tan and put me on Team Guido.

Perhaps they could replace Jersey Shore with a reality show about how the sleazy and corrupt lawyer-politicians who have driven NJ's finances into the ditch operate? Call it Garden State Shysters. I'd watch that.
I hate that this is the national image of the Jersey Shore going out on the airwaves. I grew up and moved back to the Jersey Shore because it's a great place to raise my son. Where we live, near LBI, you do get the stereotypical guidos sometimes, bit it's much better than it was back in the 80's LOL.

On a related note, when National Lampoon's Vacation was first syndicated on network TV in the late 1980's, the scene where the 14-year-old niece brags about French-kissing her teacher was censored out. The scene were the Griswolds ask directions in a St Louis slum and get their hubcabs stolen was left in. Today, when that movie is televised, the black-guys-stealing-hubcaps scene is censored out. The 14-year-old's line about French-kissing her science teacher is now LEFT IN.
I guess the studio may feel they have to cowtow to Italians because they have beel cowtowing to blacks and Hispanics for years. Well, I'm a 100-percent Italian, New Jersey native, and my family went to Seaside Heights all the time in the 60's. And I don't care what they do or say on this show. Hell, worse case, it will remind all we Jersey-expatiates why we left!
As a NY Italian-American (More American) I am pretty disgusted at these "wops" … no other word for them. The men are illiterate and the women act not like whores, but sluts. Big difference. I wonder how their parents feel seeing them as they are?

Good one, Sammy. The asking directions / stolen hubcaps scene was one of my favorites – I guess the only way to ever see it again is get the DVD (assuming it's still on that).
i fail to see how this show is any different from all the other 'reality' shows on MTV… a bunch of air-headed teens share a house together and stare at their navels… didn't they used to call that show 'the real world' ??

I will never watch this show. I´m sure it is completely worthless. But it´s one think to bewail the state of modern entertainment or to criticize political bias. I´m fine with that. It´s another thing for lawmakers (as opposed to the general public) to call for shows or movies to be taken off the air. True, it´s not new and they are not talking about legislation but I still think it reeks.

I knew there was a reason I liked you, Ed! I'm originally from New Jersey (now stuck in CA) and my family vacationed at Wildwood Crest as well! And Seaside Heights – that was our staple almost every summer weekend!
The show – yuck. I don't really do reality shows like that either.
What I like best about Wild Wood Crest is its so quiet and family oriented. When we want chaos, we'd just head up to the board walk. And when it was time to relax, just head back to the crest.
The first time we went was the first time my wife and daughter had ever been to the shore. Very special memories.
Even if she did back into a light pole. It's amazing how relaxing the surf can be.
As a Canadian with Italian ancestory, I could care less about ethnic portrayals on TV (as you can tell from my handle). My parents are these 'not-in-our-name types), and my answer to them has always been 'the mafia exists, and guess what? Italians are part of it!"
Jersey shore should be cancelled because it sucks and makes the brain dead kids who watch these semi-retarded "Guidos" (they're called Ginos in Canada) even dumber. But to Italian Americans who complain about these stereotypes, I'd say to take it up with their parents. There would be no show if people (and not just Italians) didn't raise barely literate, narcissistic jackasses and, even worse, other parents kept an eye on the jackasses their own kids watch on TV
I'm an American. Of Italian heritage and I don't consider my self a hyphonated anything. I am proud of my heritage, but it isn't my present. My grandparents came here for a reason, that would be to improve their lot and their childrens lot in life. I hate that hyphonated crap. You are either an American or not. Put that first. And it is our diversity that has given us the life we have. Now as far as reality tv. I think it sucks. I have never watched that particular one and gave up on the others a long time ago after the first survivor. BUT if it is reality tv. then what is so offensive about showing real life? If that's what those little jerks are like, hell, show everyone nationwide what our kids really look like and think like. Gives you that warm fuzzy feeling.

I recall NBC first airing "The Godfather" with a ridiculous (and completely unbelievable and disingenuous) disclaimer along the lines of 'this film does not intend to depict any particular ethnic goup,' etc., and so on and blah, blah, blah, for fear or being complained to by Italian groups. Some "Italian" groups also decried "The Sopranos." Being of Italian heritage, I always thought we were tougher than this pussfied stance asking for the pulling of a show. Some are. The others should grow a set or cry somewhere else.

ROFL. Reality TV does more to explain how we have the elected officials that we now have. Nothing like a little unemployment to wake up a nation.
I'm Italian American, and no, I don't care for guidos and guidettes(??). Those slobs are an embarassment. Quite frankly I don't care if people laugh at them either — because they are laughable.
Still, this show does tick me off for a number of reasons: if this was some other racial/ethnic/religious group of people, liberals heads would be exploding (and conservatives would be mumbling around apologizing and explaining how much they aren't racists) and there would be charges of racism — heck, the show wouldn't have that, but then you should tell every other group to clean up their act too no?) and just "deal with it" (it being the stereotype based humor that is apparently ok to publicly air when the subjects are an appropriate group).
I'm also from a rural area, so I feel much the same thing when people make remarks about "dumb midwesterners — stupid hillbillies and rednecks" — another group it is apparently "safe" to get one's jollies off at the expense of.
Sorry, part of my post disappeared: "heck, the show probably wouldn't have aired if it had been about certain other groups. I am also a bit disgusted with so many critics in papers and on blogs (and the ordinary citizens who comment therein) essentially telling Italian Americans that they are at fault because they aren't "cleaning up their own house" — then you should tell every other group to clean up their act, no? I mean, that would be the ballsy thing to do, and what you really think, right?
For the record again — I have no house cleaning to be responsible for. No one in my family is a guido/guidette, nor a Tony Soprano. My father was a decorated veteran, as were five of my uncles and four cousins, my aunt worked for the Pentagon, my mom was an Army nurse, I was a Marine, and two of my kids, both straight out of high school, are currently either coming home from deployment or getting ready to ship. We have all managed a college education and gainful employment..and not in a pizzaria.
They didn't see anything wrong with the Sopranos cause it's one of them, just the way they see themselves, and they see nothing wrong with it. This Beavis and Butthead on the Beach thing though – that's something else!
Actually the Sopranos didn't get a pass either. I believe the uh… heh, great. I can't even remember the name of the group and I'm Italian. Anyway, if I recall correctly, the <insert name of Italian American group here> campaigned against Sopranos. The same group also cost De Niro his honorary Italian citizenship as well. Again, I think. I'm afraid I don't really follow the Italian-American groups. I could very well be thinking of one or more different groups.
ANYWAY, from what I've heard of both shows I'd say the label "moronic" isn't strong enough.
As for the Italian-AMerican groups… my experience (being a native) is that these groups are populated by people who can't even speak Italian let alone know any Italian culture. That's just my experience which is quite limited! Things may well not be that way at all.
Why don't they whine about the "Sopranos" which was made by an Italian American from Jersey.
I'm not only from New Jersey, I'm from the Jersey Shore. I saw about 10 minutes of the first episode of this show, and concluded that it was simply not titled properly. The show should be called "Bennies".
