FLASHBACK: Viggo Mortensen’s Bush Bash Blunder

The actor Viggo Mortensen has apologized to Canada after inadvertently accusing the country of policy misdeeds for which he meant to chastise political leaders of the United States. The go-round occurred Sunday night at a Toronto International Film Festival panel discussion introducing ”The People Speak,” a documentary about dissent and resistance to power based on the book ”A People’s History of the United States” by Howard Zinn. Mr. Mortensen wore a T-shirt that read: ”Impeach Remove Jail.” By way of explanation Mr. Mortensen, in Toronto to promote the movie ”Appaloosa,” began a plaint about things ”that have been happening in the last eight years in this country.” He was checked by the moderator, Tom Powers, the festival’s documentary programmer, who asked if Mr. Mortensen was referring to Canada. ”Ladies and gentlemen, the angry left,” said a laughing Matt Damon, who was joined on the panel by Josh Brolin and Marisa Tomei, among others. Didn't Viggo star in 3 movies where he pushed preemptive war against those who posed a threat to his people? Just like Bush? Viggo's intellectual gifts are evident in "The Road."
Devastated by global warming, America becomes a wasteland. Viggo struggles to the coast, dodging cannibals. A more perfect blend of Middle-America-Phobia could not have been concocted.
1) global warming would increase crops (surprise! plants like it warm! Nothing new to a farmer, but to a suburban/urban metro guy it's incomprehensible.)
2) more heat means more evaporation, means more humidity, more clouds, more warm rain …greenhouse! Plants WIN again!
3) SO, Viggo struggles OUT of the BREADBASKET where the red necks, up to their eyeballs in corn, wheat, pea, carrots, cows, chickens, goats, sheep, lettuce, watermelons, cucumbers can't possibly eat another bite, so he can get to the coastal cities where nothing is grown and everything has to be trucked in from … the farms. Oops, no oil for trucking, so all the food sits at the farms, unmoveable.

My wife bought me the LOTR box set a couple of years ago. Loved it. Made the mistake of listening to the Actor's talk. OH MY! I was astounded at the sheer wrong-headedness of these people. It's like they are in a story they did not truly figure out the meaning of. They honestly believe that "evil" is just a word to describe a misunderstanding.

If you remove all the scenes of various heroic figures (particularly Viggo's) staring, looking despondent *in slow motion*, LOTR is actually quite exhilarating!
I found The Two Towers to be the best film of the trilogy, with Christopher Lee's performance as Saruman and the battle at Helm's Deep to be particularly exciting.

As long as we're being honest, I'm such a big fan of LOTR – my favorite books since I read them in high school – they could have cast Mickey Mouse and I still would have liked it.
But I do think he did a good job. Strider is a very conflicted character. I thought that came through very well.
On a side note, I detested the Liv Tyler character's addition to the script. In the book she's a foot note in the appendixes. One of the great scenes is where Frodo, on death's door, summons the strength to shout out "You shall have neither the ring nor me." Then the wave shaped like horses comes crashing down.
And they gave it to an elf. I can understand why they added her, to help make it a more palatable date movie (the first movie – which is otherwise pretty much all male actors). But they didn't have to give her that line.
…And I forget about the rivers of chocolate and lollipop forests that Sean Penn told us about. We were wrong to overthrow this man of peace. Viggo and Myatt ARE right! Damn
