by Big HollywoodWe’ll know next week Friday if “Avatar” is or is not exactly what it looks like: “Dances With Wolves: The Video Game.”
In the meantime, we can dream it turns out to be something like this.

Actually, that preview looks a heck of a lot better than the Avatar version.
having seen the extended trailer- in 3D no less- we can unequivocally say that…
It is absolutley 'Dances With Wolves'. Perhaps minus the heart, and wit, and serenity of what was a fabulous, if revisionist 'Boy's Life' feature story. Lovely fantasy with a great John Barry score.
As for 'Avatar'- it is an evil human movie- most notably an evil white man movie. And the head bad guy is a US Marine (Steven Lang in a serious scene chewing over the top performance). So there's that.
Sam Worthington is the future equivalent of Costner's John Dunbar. The rest of the film willmost likely play out the same way, as Cameron for all his skills is essentially a hack and a thief, as Harlan Ellison will attest.
Is it any good? It does look great, and the seemless blend between live action and CGI in 3D is impressive.
Maybe they'll do something really cool and make a Bond film with this technology. Unti then, it's yet more of the same narrative from Hollyweird…
Overlooked in "South Park's" recent episode satirizing Glenn Beck was their skewering of "Avatar" as "Dances With Smurfs".
As Parker and Stone usually do they nailed Cameron by dismissing "Avatar" as "Dances With Wolves", only the romanticized Lakota are replaced with romanticized blue-skinned natives.
All the Avatar bashing on this site frankly makes me sick. Mostly because Im a conservative who believes in this sites mission in every other way but bashing a movie that I could be the cinematic experiance of the decade is so uncalled for.
Video game – SOMEONE LINK TO A VIDEO GAME WITH GRAPHICS 1/100 AS GOOD AS AVATARS PHOTOREALISTIC ANIMATION. DO IT!!!!!
Yes the story does bear a resemblence to dances with wolves but so what. Every story will resemble something. Everything has been done already and people need to get over that. Judgements about this movie that it lacks story and heart are pretty hilarious from people who have never seen it. Im going to acknowledge something maybe your right maybe Avatar really is a visually amazing blockbuster without a good story or characters in the mold of Transformers but until it is seen I don't see how anyone can make that judgement. James Camerons movies in the past have managed to combine the latest effects and kick ass action but also really great story driven character dramas all in one. I see nothing from Avatar that suggests it will be any different. Cameron has never made a bad (or even a mediocre one) movie in the past so if anyone deserves the benefit of the doubt its James Cameron.
What Avatars critices strike me as are film snobs that stick there noses at great cinema because it may have mainstream appeal. Its the same attitude that denyed The Dark Knight the best movie of the decade its rightful best picture award because its a comic book movie and will probably deny Up the best movie of the year so far its proper recognition because its animated. Its pathetic really Avatar deserves a chance and I believe it will shine
There's one with [Team America]Maaat Daaamon [/Team America].
Forget how good the CGI is supposed to look… computer graphics cannot write a good script. Just ask Lucas.
If anyone deserves skepticism, it's the man who has taken the baton from George Lucas… and that is the director of (I refuse to call it by the official title) "That Damn Boat Movie".
Certainly computer graphics can't write a good script (Transformers Revenge of the Fallen proves that beyond a doubt) but computer graphics when paired with filmmaking talent can be amazing and I believe Avatar will be just that.
My point was the dismiss the idiotic video game comparisons. Im a gamer myself and no game console can render graphics to nearly the degree prerendered movies can. The best looking Playstation 3/Xbox 360 games look about equivalent to the first Toy Story movie released back in 1995 and even Toy Story wasn't state of the art CG of its time (it was a great movie though). Avatars creatures have amazing detail and photorealism that no game console will be able to match anytime before 2025 at the earliest
The Dark Knight was awesome in so many ways.
What I worry about with Avatar is who have they made the villains? The voice over of this clip I'm assuming is the voice and sound of a real trailer and it's somewhat encouraging, actually. But discouraging, too, because although *maybe* the military isn't portrayed as made up of unquestioning robots who just go and do anything they are told, it sounds a whole lot like the same thing has been done with the whole human race. But maybe not, because of the one line where *someone* is trying to avoid war…. except that the rest of it sounds like there is only one human who is decent. Maybe it's a good movie with misleading trailers?
Oh, Iron Man was excellent, too.
I'm the last person who's going to dis something because it's a comic book movie or animated.
I doubt Damon will do it. He is like most liberals: all talk and no brains. Liberals do not debate, they accuse, shout and demonize their opponents. Kristol would chew him up like nothing else…that I would love to see, but sadly I doubt it will ever happen.
Mainly because there's a difference between pre-rendered CG and interactive game engine. But you know that as a long time gamer we've both seen CG cut scene or even pre-rendered in game engine verses live game engine. Apples and oranges there on CG my friend.
Though I will grant you I too dislike the instant dissing of 3D. Since I do so much 3D art myself.
My wife and I are interested in seeing this, not because of James Cameron, but because of the CG. Why? We're 3D artistis.
So yeah while we both think the story will be very derrivative and I think he'll slam the "Evil Capitalists" and/or the military we'll probably see it. Full price? No. But see it.
Though I have to say with the premise of gettting the cool floating rocks from the place why must they get it from the one where the people are at? I mean aren't ALL the rocks cool floaty ones that are floating in the air? Come on now, the cost to benefit ratio isn't there.
I saw the short trailer and came to the same conclusion. Maybe I will catch it on cable. But probably not.
Cameron worked all these years just to give us another take on the evil, white, racist, manifest-destiny male tale? Leftard "feminist" members of the She-Male Man Haters Club ought to enjoy it. They can rage against the hegemony of the patriarchy and their hetero-normative oppressors for over two hours.
I wanted a movie to look forward to. I doubt Avatar is that movie. It will be visually impressive, even stunning – you can trust James Cameron with that. But the "Dances with Wolves" comparison is misleading. "Dances" may romanticize the Indians but so be it – it is a classy movie. Judging by the trailer, Avatar has awful cliched dialogue, a predictable story and politics straight from the 1970s.
A better comparison would be with "Waterworld", which was just a rehash of "The Road Warrior" but with a trendy ecological spin. Of course there are young people who thought "Waterworld" was awesome because they hadn´t seen anything made before 1990.
Makes you sick? Invested in it have you?
I find your constant "smash anyone who thinks Avatar is the stupid film it looks like with ad hominem attacks" mildly amusing. Do continue.
I have to say I do like the world as presented in the preview. Lots of bright colors and such. Very cheery. It would make a lovely setting for some sort of wonky video game. (As for a movie……
)
However, I can clearly see it's CG when they move. (Likely because I also do quite a bit of 3D work.) That's where Pixar gets it. They realize from the start it's a CG film so they don't try and pass it as live action. With Avatar (at least based on the preview) I can already see the CG every time an alien pops up and when you couple that with a rather blasé plot the suspension of disbelief is already dashed. Coming away from that preview I felt more like I'd just seen a game trailer rather than a movie trailer.
This is of course all academic. We'll all know for sure once the movie is released.
The Dark Knight was awesome in so many ways.

….boycott hollywood and their acolytes
I really liked Dark Knight, but it wasn't the best movie of the decade. Keep in mind that for it to be the best movie of the decade, it would have to be better than The Lives of Others. And it isn't.
If only they had used that trailer to market Team America!! I think a lot of people missed a really clever movie because the marketing!
Maaaaattt Daaamon!!
Avatar looks like either another great escape fantasy or one more monumental waste of bytes.
I think of the original Star Trek, which is something of a liberal's projection into the future, when enemies and differing cultures have 'united' in 'common purpose', no nation being of any more value than the next. I was pleased then to watch the Latest Star Trek flick, where bad guys are blown away without remorse, and even Spock getting in on the justice.
Avatar is going to rock and I dont care if it is full of left-wing hysteria. It is a James Cameron film, which means buckle your seat belt and get ready to rock and roll.
A better comparison would be to the movie Battle for Terra: “The film tells the story of Senn (Justin Long) and Mala (Evan Rachel Wood), two rebellious alien teens living on the beautiful planet Terra, a place that promotes peace and tolerance, having long ago rejected war and weapons of mass destruction. But when Terra is invaded by human beings fleeing a civil war and environmental catastrophe, the planet is plunged into chaos. During the upheaval, Mala befriends an injured human pilot (Luke Wilson) and each learns the two races are not so different from one another. Together they must face the terrifying realization that in a world of limited resources, only one of their races is likely to survive.
Like Cameron's other films, Avatar will be anti-military/anti-embellishment with lots of action to make it theme palatable to the masses.
it'll do big fanboy biz. But will it be another 'Watchmen'? At $300 mil (very conservative estimate) it needs more than that!
While I like some movies made in the last twenty years they pale beside the movies made in the past. I won't bother to list even a few because the last couple of generations of Americans have no appreciation of movies without fantastic CGI or other special effects. Or stories about really far out imaginary worlds or circumstances.
In looking at this it is really sad. But that's OK I guess because my generation is almost gone and even we didn't watch many movies from the dawn of cinema, including the silent films, some of which are classics that need no sound or words.
Life continues, changes and is embraced, but respect for the past is not only disappearing but is fast becoming a fault that will not be understood until it is lost forever.
Papa Ray
I'm thinking Sherlock Holmes will trounce Cameron at the box office.
The best movie released in the last couple of years was "Iron Man" (they had AC/DC in soundtrack, 'nuf said). The best movie(s) of the decade was the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy.
Maaat Daaamon!
Try the PC game Crysis jimbo, but if you don't have a top of the line computer you will not be able to experience the highest settings.
While i don't care for the premise set by the trailer (yes, perhaps this may fade once some of us have a chance to actually see it), I can agree that Cameron does know how to give one wild ride.
I don´t know about that. Avatar cannot really "bomb" in the conventional sense. There´s no way it will make less than 100 million domestically, twice that abroad, minimum. But I wouldn´t be surprised if Sherlock Holmes turns out to be the more entertaining movie (decidedly less family friendly though). Unlike Avatar it didn´t cost 300 million and change.
Ill stop defending Avatar as soon as I stop seeing imature attacks against it
Matt Daaa-mon!!
F.A.G.
AVATAR looks like a stupid movie and I don't plan on seeing it. Was that less immature?
I hope Cameron just loses everything on this anti American pile of garbage. I'd light it on fire but the gas in it is so volitile it would set half the west coast on fire.
Suggest lighten up you do.
Oh great. If the cynicism, anti-military and anti-Western theme come through this clearly in the trailer, the movie is going to be completely unbearable. I was a James Cameron superfan, now I'm not even going to see the most expensive movie ever made, helmed by my previously-favorite director. Is he actively trying to fail at the box office?
That's hysterical!
The only thing that kept The Dark Knight from becoming the best movie of the decade is that it wasn't the best movie of the decade.
Of course as far as I'm concerned just about all movies made after North by Northwest suck. The garbage coming out of Hollywood is a flood of non-stop dross. I like action and adventure and special effects as much as the next guy, but they are far from what makes a movie "good". I'll watch The Philadelphia Story over The Dark Knight any day, and enjoy it 10 times as much.
That's actually pretty easy these days. They can't seem to come up with much I'm interested in seeing anyway.
I'm just hoping they don't screw up "Tron".
Reviews of Avatar are in and it currently enjoys a 100% positive rating among both critices and audience. As ive said over and over again this movie will ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Haha, my brother nailed it: "Stop Loss with Smurfs"
Matt Damon!!!
Matt Damon. [/statement]
Battle for Terra and Avatar have very similar stories but its worth noting Avatar has actually been in production longer the Battle for Terra has. Neither are rip offs of each other but were just an odd cowincidence both movies came out so close to each other. Battle for Tera wasn't a bad movie but it was a bit preachy and some characters poorly developed. With 10x the budget and James Cameron behind it Avatar is certainly to be superior
Exclamation: Matt Damon! [/HK-47]
