I hate to admit it, but I bought the People's History of the United States quite a while back – thinking it was what it said – a people's history. I did not realize until getting into it that it was Stalin's and Mao's "People" it referred to.
The book is totally bogus on a lot of levels. I know all historians tend to slant a little, but Zinn doesn't even try to keep a balanced view of anything.
Thank you for posting this, even though it will take all day for the nausea to let up. This is a sick, despicable man, and many of his supporters are young, naive and ill informed. Everyone needs to see who this guy is and what he believes and how he's corrupted facts to write his view of history.
I'm really surprised this hasn't gotten more play across the blogosphere. It's an outrage.
There is an alternative to Zinn's abomination which will cleanse your historical palate. It's called "A Patriot's History of the United States" by Larry Schweikart, available on Amazon. I highly recommend it. It is a history book written by someone who loves America and understands it in context.

Howard Zinn is a genius. There is a difference between the history of the US government and that of the people. The people are not the government in this or any government. The government represents the powerful – the minority. That's all it ever does. The people must resist the controls and repression of the government. They must remain free to think against its propaganda. All history is propaganda. It's only a matter of whose propaganda it is. Zinn is correct. Americans are in denial on the effects our foreign policy has upon other countries. Not so easy to wake up and turn the mirror on us.
We already know the history of "The People" because our forefathers were there, fighting for and securing our freedom, as well as the freedom of Howard Zinn's "People" from Nazi concentration camps, so that he could come here and denigrate our history.
It's worth keeping in mind that the troops stationed in the middle east prior to 9/11 were intended to defend Arab nations against the aggression of Iraq. We stationed troops in Saudi Arabia at the behest of that country; we liberated Kuwait to the gratitude of that country. This was all done through the auspices of the United Nations, including with support from Egypt, Turkey, and Syria. Is this what Prof. Zinn points to as an aggression requiring the indiscriminate slaughter of 3,000 people?
The oath I took was to "protect and defend the constitution against all enemies, foreign AND DOMESTIC". With rectum orfices like this prick, and much of the "Chosen One's Administration" the list of domestic enemies is quickly growing.

The history of the world is the history of class struggles. That is what I believe Howard Zinn is trying to show with this book. Most Americans were brought up with a highly slanted view of history that glorifies our nation as being the best because we are the most creative, industrious, and hard-working people on the planet, oh yeah and we looove freedom. This line of thinking is dangerous, as there is not much of a difference between this ultra-nationalism and fascism. But we were in the cold war and as we all know, the cold war was a battle of ideologues and America had to perserve the status of the bourgeoise by undermining the struggles of working people.

There's only one important question concerning the attacks, did the US gov't allow/participate in 9/11?
The answer to that query would explain the illegal wire-taps, suspension of habeas corpus, banning of books like "America Deceived" from Amazon, detaining of dissenters in fences miles away from events, and multiple wars based on lies.

So, Howard Zinn QUOTES the actual report of the Tom Keane (former governor R-NJ)-headed, President Bush-appointed, Independent Commission on 9/11, to say the motivation of the attackers was the US foreign policy in the Middle East with regard to Israel and the various Arab nations, and this is the response?
What he said is obviously true, which is why a hand-picked commission by Bush (hardly a bunch of leftist activists) said the same thing. (In fact, it is exactly what Osama bin Laden himself had said in a direct statement of his grievances with the US.)
As a matter of fact, one of the things Bush did fairly immediately was to withdraw the US military presence in Saudi Arabia, as bin Laden had demanded prior to 9/11.
Please note, describing their motivations accurately does not make those motivations accurate ones, absolve them of the heinous immorality and criminality of their acts, nor necessarily put the blame on us. But it WAS their motivation, plain and simple, as almost anyone with historical knowledge would agree.
You want to ignore their stated and obvious true motivations in a discussion of their motivations? That can only be a propagandistic approach, and one that disserves the American people.

Our government does a lot of stupid things, most of them here at home and some overseas. We try to correct the government when it makes mistakes at home but tend to defend it at all costs when it makes mistakes in the realm of foreign policy.
This is dishonest and will never lead to a better government.
