there are so many great Christmas songs, I tend to like the more obscure ones.
Stars were Gleaming
Jeannette Isabella
Somewhere in my memory (From home alone, believe it or not)
we three Kings
Holly jolly Christmas
there are some songes that are just loathsome:
Santa Baby
Baby, It's cold outside
12 days of christmas (the only redeeming part are the 5 golden rings)
this Bowie/Crosby song is a favorite.
I suppose this is a very controversial topic, but there are some chrismas songs that should never be palyed again. With so much good stuff out there, why waste time with the garbage.
Bush's last speech at West Point–Dec 2008–
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TgLYLuDjlY
I'm really glad you posted that.
It shows that the cadets really loved him. Granted the tone of the speech from Bush and Obama's were different in tone. But I didn't seem the warmth last night.
I did however, witnedd the "smell the fart" style of speechifying last night.
This Bing and Bowie duet demonstrates to me an important concept. Rather than creating something entirely new, they built on the foundation of a classic. They did not strive to fundamentally change Christmas songs. They did not throw out the old in deference to the new. Instead they took what worked and added new components that harmonized with what was already there. It brought together two generations so that they could both appreciate and revel in the masterpiece that was created through finding the common ground and building on that. Perhaps there is a lesson here for all of us?
To state a time of withdraw is toooo state a surrender. Where are the terms of victory.. I said the same thing under bush.. Where is the clear cut terms of victory? Where is …. I fight my way to here. I will know it is victory.. Where and what is victory? We are nation building for the PC crowd, not for the people of that country or ours.. We should have just killed and got out, because you cant build their country for them.. Either we are a nation of WE THE PEOPLE and we embrace that promise or it is all a lie.. LET victory be the people of Afghanistan not their government vote we stay or go.. IF they say stay then evil has lost and a country can be built.. If they say go, then FREEDOM has won, because it is the will of the people that we have honored…
30K troops instead of 40K that McChrystal wanted. His minions are stating that he's calling for the other 10K from the coalition, to the sound of cheeping crickets. And he'll be trickling them in starting next year, building up to full strength by the middle of summer. Looks like more of a dribble than a surge.
I've loved this version since before I'd heard of Bing or Bowie. Classic!

This is what a real Commander-in-Chief would've said last night:
"We're not just gonna shoot the bastards. We're gonna cut out their living guts…and use them…to grease the treads of our tanks!"
Memo to Obama:
Wars aren't just over- they're won or lost…
And there's never been a war won where the winner announced beforehand when they would stop fighting.
How about them "global warming" people? Aren't they somethin'? Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
when I was in school (studying emergency management/homeland security) a friend of mine was turned town for TSA (he was working on the same degree) apparently the Mohawk'd kid i saw in the TSA uniform was a better candidate.
You know, I've always wondered why "Baby, It's Cold Outside" and "Winter Wonderland" are considered Christmas songs. Because they're singing about the cold? If that's the case I now proclaim "Cold as Ice" a Christmas song.
From what I've observed in airports, to be TSA generally, you have to have a giant butt and a very dark complexion. If you're the person manning the xray, being in your late 40's-50's helps, and you should have a crewcut.
That simply illustrates the difference between a real and respected Commander-in-Chief and a loathesome, politically correct, noballs Community Organizer-in-Chief.
Where's TR when we need him?
A blast from the past. When I saw that the first time, I said “huh – - do what?” Then sat back and listened, very nice!
yeah and Greensleeves? what's up with that?
rum pum pum pum, my arse.
that was a desperate move.
The history of secular Christmas songs is quite barren until the advent of White Christmas. There's very little actual "Christmas music" prior to 1942
"Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" ans *maybe* one or two others. All else is the occasional seasonal song like "Winter Weather" and "Jingle Bells".
"White Christmas" opened the floodgates.
"Baby, It's Cold Outside" is not a 'Christmas' song.
Why do you find it "loathsome"? It's a well written and cleverly constructed song with overlapping 'call and response' parts for a male and female vocalist.
My new favorite Christmas album is one that came out last year by Jack Johnson and company called "Warm December". If your into that sound (Jack Johnson) check it out.
ok but the song is only played between Thanksgiving and Christmas, so that makes it a "Christmas" song in my book.
The song was written by and is usualy performed by talented people. I still hate it.
I've been doing a lot of flying lately, and most of the people sent to the shakedown stations (I like that name) were mothers of infants. I'm sure a stinky diaper is a great place to hide a plastic explosive.

My favorite part is the line, "Every child must be made aware, every child must be made to care, care enough for his fellow man"!
Who knows, they might even be sing this progressive drivel at the White House this year.
Just my opinion, but its a nice, peaceful instrumental that I think gets broken out because it gives the choir a break, and lets the organist solo, during religious services.
I heard the same thing about the secret service. The Bush's were always very polite and warm to them, treating them like social equals. A huge change from the Clinton administration where they were treated like undocumented landscape workers.
The problem with Afghanistan is if the world needed an enema, that's where they'd stick the tube.
It's so remote, so poor in natural resources, so vast, it's not worth the cost to govern the entire country. Economically its a losing deal. There's no real trick as to why its never been conquered, and it's not because Afghans are some sort of super fighters. It's just not worth the hassle.
The only reason the US went in there in the first place was because the taliban wouldn't (my opinion, couldn't) hand over the top al qeada leaders.
In my opinion that was the main reason for invading Iraq. All those foreign suicide bombers the military took out in Iraq? That was so the US didn't have to fight them in Afghanistan on their terms.
Most people missed Obama's most important speech yesterday:
OBAMA ANNOUNCES SURGE….IN PARTIES!
http://naturalfake.wordpress.com/2009/12/02/obama...
I didn't hear the speech, I seldom bother with listening to what a politician says, and instead watch what they do. It's much more telling.
But I heard clips on NPR this morning and Rush is playing clips now, and from what I'm hearing, I don't see any other country sending any more troops in.
And why should they? Obama just publicly stated the war will be fit into the 2012 presidential election schedule.
I love the Bing and Bowie duet, two such distinctive voices and styles, and as you say, the bringing together of two generations, particularly at that time when the distinctions between generations was so pronounced.
Obama kills A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS, a family unifying Christmas viewing experience for millions of parents and kids. BOOOOOO!
What next? "IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE?" Some Christmas Day football game? The Second Coming?
Get that guy off the stage!
The comment I've been reading most often about Obama's speech is that it certainly wasn't "Churchillian". That's for damn sure. I can't stand to listen to his voice, so I didn't watch the speech, but read the complete thing online. Besides the appalling announcement of a deadline for withdrawal, the part that amazes me is that he stood up there in front of West Point cadets, some of whom have previously been deployed, and whined to them that all of this costs a lot of money. Essentially saying, "Gee, war is expensive. You know, the American people pay your salaries, and times are tough." Like somehow, this is all their fault. Galling in the extreme!
I really like this song. It's a nice twist on a classic.
The test of a true war president is if they are willing to make the same sacrifices they ask of the American people. Bush, who went AWOL from the Texas Air National Guard, refused to send his own daughters off to fight a war he himself supported. I wonder if Obama will rise above Dubya's hypocrisy and send the Bush twins over to Afghanistan. Until he does, he has no business shipping our own children over there.
It no longer matters why we are at the end of the earth.. It is where our people die and more will die.. It doesn’t matter if hell is home if that man believes it is his home, a home to protect and defend. He will not accept that puppet of ours any more than we would accept a puppet of theirs unless we accepted their help .I don’t trust our elite why would a commoner there accept their elite. In the end this is all about us and our beliefs …our honor. .and doesn’t matter what the world thinks, but it does matter what we think… Do we believe in our words or do they just make pretty pictures on a wall or are they quaint whispers from the past.. If we offer these people freedom then they must have the freedom to chose to live in hell or join us in freedom. Either way we can go home with honor.
we agree. I just wish those in charge would agree..instead they play politics with lives.
OH, I just found it on YouTube! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clV0zItRrhk
I love this song!
I have a bumper sticker on my car. It say's, "OBAMA SUCKS"!
Don't get me started with these idiots…gerrrrr…
yup. Atlanta – Chicago – etc….
BuckwheatPicard said, "…there are some chrismas songs that should never be played again."
Yeah, I second that! Number One on my "Never Play Again List" is "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer." The guy who wrote that should get run over by a "Manhatten Steamroller."
Melissa Clothier has a post at Right Wing News about a first hand account of a recent "dry run" by eleven Muslims on a plane that shows some real bravery by a couple of passengers and outrageous response by TSA personnel. Most passengers and flight crew would have nothing to do with allowing them to re-board and flight was canceled.
You can never trust those "Little old white ladies." I know a lot of them and man are they vicious. And look out for those purses they carry, they're loaded with 10 pounds of whatever women carry in those things. You don't want to get hit by one!
And succeeded in pleasing neither.
Baby diapers are often explosive, however it's not the plastic type.
Ah, the mark of the troll … send the Bush daughters off to war! Shut off the lap top, get off the damned toilet and for God's sake, FLUSH!
Anyone been to an airport lately? My friend and I had some time to kill at one of the big city airports, and whiled away some time watching Homeland Security pretending they're keeping people safe. We sat outside the two "Shakedown Stations" (we called them) and we each picked a station to watch. We then did a commentary on the suspicious characters being wanded and patted down.
"Little old white lady."
"Little old white lady."
"Young Asian mother with infant. Bet she only weighs 50 pounds."
"The infant?"
"No, dimtwit…the mother."
"Little old white lady."
"Little old white lady."
"Small Asian boy in baseball cap. Looks about 8."
"Blond cheerleader-type. Two bucks says her name's Ashley."
"Little old white lady."
"Little red-haired girl in Hannah Montana t-shirt."
"Another cheerleader."
"Little old white lady."
"Little old white lady."
"Little old white lady."
"Priest. Probably about 104 years old."
"They're wanding a priest? They're going to hell. Little old white lady."
Anyone who looked like they might have a little bit of muscle on them, or looked unfriendly or potentially problematic was waved on through. Are we really supposed to feel safe from terrorism on airplanes now, because the feds are doing such a *cough* thorough job?
I think Monty Python did a special on these ladies- they're called "Hell's Grannies".
"Tingle" Matthews let slip his true feelings last night about West Point being the enemy camp. West Point being the enemy camp for the Commander in Chief? Interesting but not surprising.
I am with you on Baby, it's cold outside. Very hard to listen to it all the way through.
I too like the more obscure ones:
Gesu Bambino (Kathleen Battle does a great rendition)
Guardian Angels (written by Harpo Marx – best performance by Mario Lanza)
The Earl of Salisbury's Pavane
For Unto Us A Child is Born
I agree on your loathsome choices although it pains me to dislike anything Dean Martin or Ertha Kitt recorded, but let me add what I consider the most vile dren ever recorded:
Merry Christmas The War Is Over (John Lennon)
I Believed In Father Christmas (Emerson Lake And Palmer)
Do They Know It's Christmas (Band Aid)
Or even a Manheim Steamroller!
Re your last sentence, this is why Obama is an "unprecedented" or "historic" President.
not a favorite carol, but fun to hear these two. high point in bowie's career singing with der bingle, one of the immortals. (gratuitous political insult: bumper sticker, Next TIme Vote for the American)
It's a small surge, followed by a retreat. Obama apparently spent the last few months not planning a strategy for victory in Afghanistan or even supporting our troops, but rather trying to figure out a way he could please both the hawks and the doves in his party.
HEY DUMBA$$ DO THE WORDS VOLUNTEER MILITARY MEAN ANYTHING TO YOU?! Duhbama cant send anyone anywhere unless they 1 volunteer for service or 2 brings back the draft.
Its the mark of a true coward to use a BS argument like that one.
SUA SPONTE (which mean by their own accord you pinhead and is the motto of my beloved Rangers)
Di OPPRESO LIBRE (for my beloved Berets)
But I would not expect you to know this.
Yep and Chrissy gave a Ratheresque apology as well. When the hell are we gonna see him on the unemployment line?
Agreed. I was speaking more to the tactical part of the issue.
It seems to me pretty much anyone with the means and the brains gets the heck out of there as fast as they can, and don't look back. Guess who that leaves behind.
In my opinion, you either jump in with both boots, or you don't jump in at all. That was the problem with every Union General except for the first (Scott) and the last (Grant) (Meade's tenure is debatable.) They all dithered, afraid to take the plunge until they were sure there was no chance of failure.
Scott was building the army he knew he was too old to command, and Grant was all over Lee till he surrendered. That's how you win a war. Strike fast, hard, and don't stop till they give up.
I remember a song from my childhood done by Dennis Day. It was called "Christmas Is For The Family." Anyone familiar with that song? I've been looking for it forever and can't find it.
I would have loved to go shoot pheasants with Bing and Phil.
"Baby, it's cold outside" gives me the creeps. Shades of Roman Polanski, I tell ya.
One of my personal favorites is "Lo How A Rose Ere Blooming".
My next door neighbor had/has one that says "Obama Mama". May I add that she and her husband are the WORST NEIGHBORS I have ever had? 2 selfish 20-somethings who dont care about anyone here except them with a 1 and 3 year old often unsupervised on a balcony. The 3 y/o peed all over the 1 y/o recently and all over the balcony. She was no where to be found, though she was arrested for DUI a few months ago. Husband is a moron.
Your typical Obama Mama?
Down in Mexico
We have got no snow
You have got no snow?
Down in Mexico!
Sit around all day
Hear the music play
Everytime we sing
Tequila glasses ring
Jingle, jingle, jingle, jingle
I will have to check some out as i am unfamiliar.
With you on "war is over"
But I do like "band aid"
Merry Christmas, I don't want to fight tonight byt the Ramones
or Father Christmas by the Kinks
any thoughts
I stand corrected. I knew it was one or the other.
