Olivier!
Oh, how can anyone say something intelligent and useful about this complex man in a single comment?
Laurence Olivier was a tremendous actor. I've seen his "Henry V" and also enjoyed his performance as a very young man in "Fire Over England" (recognize the theme song, anyone?), where his trained voice seems at times to overwhelm the rather primitive sound equipment of the day.
And he was quite magnificently irascible in "The Battle of Britain," too and probably did his own operation of the plane (on the ground); although he was never allowed to be in the original battle, he did get some 200 hours of flight time and while in the service during WWII did become a pilot in the Fleet Air Arm (per Wikipedia).
I would have liked to see his staging, in one night, of "Oedipus" and "The Critic." That's quite a transition!
Vivien Leigh put him through hell, for sure; but he probably wasn't too easy to love and live with, either. What a couple they made, though!
…as for the other major problems affecting our nation? Well, the biggest problem going forward is that Obama is present.

Surprise!
Guess who visited White House?
The national chairman of the radical New Black Panther Party!

Michelle Obama Tops French Elle's Best-Dressed List Beating Out Carla Bruni
Elle Magazine, the french style bible, has proclaimed that Michelle Obama is more chic than Carla Bruni.
I took the comments from my source, the UK Times, which were overwhelmingly negative. IMAO, this has more to do about race than style.
Oh, my gosh – that was…well, not quite awesome. But I did get a kick out of it this morning! Thanks!
How come nobody's commenting on the Bush administration letting the big one get away?

Are you surprised? BO probably was the most honest campaigner in American History. He showed American voters who he was by his own words (in his book), by the religion he adopted (AfroCentrism), by his friends and mentors (Terrorist Ayers, Black Power Advocate Wright, Marxist Frank Marshall, Marxists in college). He married a woman who had nothing but contempt for white America (the country that affirmative actioned her into Princeton is "mean" ). America just didn't believe him when he said he wanted to take from the oppressors and give to the people who built this country. That was right out of Chavez and other African and South American Marxists lexicon. Didn't he tell Joe the Plumber what he was up to? Didn't those who voted for him hear hear him? Didn't they believe him? Did they think he was just saying those things to get elected? Or was the Propaganda Media so effective only those of us who watch Fox, listen to talk radio and use the internet know what he said? Van Jones got canned, not because he was an avowed communist but because the word got out. Anita Dunn is gone not because Mao is her hero, but because it got through the media filter, Reverend Wright got ditched not because of his tirades from the pulpit but because he said BO was doing and saying what he had to do and say to get elected. The days of Bolsheviks shooting their way into power are passe'; now they get voted into power by a gullible people railroaded by a propaganda media and brainwashing professors. And when "we the people" stand up and protest, these same forces attack US.
Michelle Obama has a pretty face, is the right color, and from the head to the waist is very attractive. But she's got a butt like a city bus and whoever picks out her clothes must have it in for her most of the time. Did you see her in that yellow dress in Asia with her panty line showing? The picture only showed once, so I guess the propaganda media ditched it pronto. Did you see her in the aqua outfit when everyone else was wearing black? Or in short shorts descending from Air Force One? She's a joke, but just as everything with this presidency, there is a concerted effort by propagandists to make them into more than they are.
Lose those extra holiday pounds today!
It's science!
THE BARACK OBAMA DIET PLAN
http://naturalfake.wordpress.com/2009/11/28/the-b...
I think the lesson here is to give the guys on the ground the tools to reach the objective. I wish I could say that this is a lesson learned.
Oh My My What can be said about this fellow. This guy was just as much of a rat as Roman Polanski is. He had a son and an unborn child inside his loving wife. He met Vivien Leigh…
Guess how he chose to tell his wife, the mother of his children, that he had met the woman of his dreams, Just take a guess… Give Up? Okay I'll tell ya. While the little wife was in the hospital to have the baby, her husband walks in with a glowingVivien Leigh on his arm and tells his wife he is leaving her for the most beautiful woman in the world and then he introduces her to Vivien Leigh. He says this in front of his son. The son recalls the look on his poor mother's face when her husband doesn't bring her hugs and flowers and various expressions of a grand proud loving father to be but ignores the reality of the situation and simply gushes on about his loving new fiancee… He asked for a divorce right there as his wife lay in the hospital bed.
A great actor? Yes. A decent man? Are you kidding !
"Michelle Obama has a pretty face, is the right color, and from the head to the waist is very attractive…"
Pretty??? Head to waist very attractive??? She isn't pretty and she has boobs like off brand potatoes. She's a grotesque clownette from head to toe. No real man could sleep with that and not be blind or wake up blind the next day.
He may be a cad, but he wasn't a rapist. He's sadly in league with Gingrich (wife hospitalized with cancer) & McCain (wife disfigured in car accident), though…
I've already Facebooked this terrific video. Very well written and well done:

“It is almost impossible to distinguish a politician from a gangster.” (Will Durant, 1931)
I predicted tea parties would return. Now I'm predicting dueling will return.
Don't forget John Edwards.
Obama, the most honest campaigner? I seem to remember promises and pledges of tax cuts, limited government, almost shades of Ronald Reagan.
Of course once the curtain was drawn, and the klieg lights dimmed, he went off and did pretty much everything you mentioned, plus a whole lot more. To which we were scolded by the lame stream media, was of no importance.
Pay no attention to the nefarious men and women behind the curtain.
"Kathy…" said Heathcliffe on the moors. A man who did go mad…
So I was at facebook answering a poll on "do you think fox news is ruining America" and guess how many koolaid drinkers voted yes. 32% I'm thinking that they're the same ones who voted for obama.
Of course it has more to do with race.
It's easy to tell the racists on the left, they're the ones screaming the loudest about how whom ever doesn't agree with them is a racist.
Growltiger
Some one is voting you down. Guess you hit a sore spot.
That's why politicians should stay out of the war business, and soldiers should stay out of politics (until properly retired).
What works well in one venue, doesn't cut it in the other.
By the way, this is hardly new news. This story has been floating around for years. Funny how it gets trotted out just before Obama's big press conference at West Point. I predict the entire speech can be pretty much summed up as "Don't look at me, he did it."
There's something very familiar with the way Serena shook that BALL in the judge's face, then theatened to "shove it down her fu**ing throat!" [her words- not mine.]
Kinda reminds me of what Barack's doin': Shakin' that BILL in our faces and threatening to shove it down our throats!
Guess I'd better doublecheck out the definition of "chic."
obamashuga_nuts
With twenty three (23) people on her personal payroll you would think one of them would have good fashion taste, and the nerve to tell her when she looks like a troll.
And how many years has this been circulating in the news? Please stop drowning in your own righteous indignation.
And how many times did slick bill clinton let him slip through his fingers? Hindsight is golden – look forward, not backwards. Oh, but that's the only way to keep pushing the Obama agenda – blame anybody but him for his own failures.
On Chris Matthews show yesterday, he had four Liberal Jewish pundits on, Ann Cornbluth, Joe Klein, Andrea Mitchell, and some guy Ingneitas. What up with that? They were all in agreement with each other on the issues, just a little different take on the same theme. Where is the balance? That is why Fox smokes NBC. They preach to the choir.
It may be my middle class tastes in film. but LO does not appear in my films that I have a liking for.
Shockingly (or not), my favorite Olivier film is THE BOYS FROM BRAZIL, particularly the scene in which he and Gregory Peck as the infamous Dr. Josef Mengele are rolling around on the floor in a fight to the death wrestling match trying to kill each other.
Second choice – the evil dentist torturing Dustin Hoffman in MARATHON MAN. "Is it safe?"
I also found it near incredible that Jack Larsen who played Jimmy Olsen on the 1950s TV series SUPERMAN mentioned in an interview that LO had told him that he brought a high degree of energy to the role, which was true. I was surprised to hear LO taking notice of Jimmy Olsen until I read that they had been intimately involved at one time and then it all made sense. Hard to envision LO watching episodes of SUPERMAN.
If you pay attention to them, it will only encourage them.
Lord Larry to you…
hmmmm….
We seem to remember the esteemed Swift Boat hero John Kerry calling for a pause in the fighting during the Tora Bora phase. And there was a 48 hour cessation of hostilities too, if one recalls correctly.
Maybe plenty 'o blame to go around…
we couldn't agree more…
Olivier was a terrific stage actor and his Shakepeare was nonpareil.
But his film work- much like Burton's- was hammy, and his films, other than 'Wuthering Heights' were pretty forgettable. Frankly we can't recall a film he strred in we liked. Marathon Man was potbolier stuff to be sure.
Knew about his affair with Danny Kaye. Jack Larsen? Guess it MUST be Monday…
Bless you for saying this, Cardinal_Fang!
Didn't know about this really crappy treatment of his wife, prior to Ms. Leigh. Do you suppose the Karma Wheel spun a little faster, and that Larry incurred some payback wih Vivien's behavior later on in their marriage? Payback can be a bi**h, can't it .
Ooo, you're right! Extra douchebaggy!
Thanks for mentioning Olivier's turns in 'Boys' and 'Marathon'..two of my faves. The thing with Jack Larsen is a little hard to process, though.
Thanks to contributor, Shel, I'm not impressed with LO's behavior early on in his personal life. Those actions are beyond the pale. But since he's not a politician who has control over policies that influence my life…I'm still glad that he made some memorable movies like the ones that are mentioned by other contributors. I enjoy seeing 'Rebecca' whenever TCM shows it. Love the cast.
This is a good one!

Should I start taking fencing lessons?
On a slightly related note, I can't read about a duel without thinking of this scene from Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon, one of my top two Kubrick films (and I'm not even a big fan of historical costume dramas).

The Pravda media aided, abetted and explained away most of the information you posted. If it wasn't for conservative talk radio and the internet, who knows how the 0beyme narrative would have been portrayed. But you make a good point, he did all those things you mentioned.
Another good find on youtube, obamashuga!! Loved it!
That's the 0beyme administration mantra, "It's Bushs fault!!"
I'll readily admit I know next to nothing about fashion, but what is it, about those belts? OY VEY!!
What Serena did, does seem to be what 0beyme's doing to us on an everyday basis.
Jimmy Olsen and Heatcliff were doin it?? Oy another image shattered.
Regarding Jack Larsen – He has had an interesting career. He seems very personable and he has been a loyal friend to Noel Neill and to the memory of George Reeves. He still does interviews and looks great for his age. He was a good looking guy when he was young. No Adonis, but if LO dug Danny Kaye, JL was a step up.
Hahaha – my fave Jimmy Olson moment in the old SUPERMAN series – he is in an out of control car with no brakes going down a hill at a fast speed. He's been jamming the brake with his foot to no avail and then he reaches down and starts grabbing and pushing the brake pedal with his hands! Now, that's bringing energy to the part!
I liked the one where he took out a putter I think to swing at a bad guy on the ledge outside the Daily Planet office, and fell off the ledge, only to be saved by Superman. This show was a Black & White one, oh how I loved watching it while growing up. I think that is the only role I saw Jack Larson portray. I can't remember him in anything else, off hand.
Whoa, that´s a harsher judgement than I am prepared to give. Frankly if she ever said anything nice or intelligent I wouldn´t care about her looks or clothes. I´m saintly like that. But like her husband she sounds like she has a chip on her shoulder. Like someone stole their lunch box in second grade and now we all are having to pay it.

He's got a few good films to his credit. .
He finished a new film – first in ages! His first non-Superman feature film in 50 years! Now that's a lay-off! I'm sure he got typecast as Jimmy Olsen
And I do remember him in FIGHTER SQUADRON in 1948.
I haven't seen "Fighter Squadron." I'm sure, like George Reeves and many other TV stars, he was typecast. Thanks for the links.
Wow. Sure hope you look like Clark Gable.
You're saying MSNBC is partisan and Fox News isn't? Okaaaay….
CNN is the only one that's non-partisan.
And who cares if they were Jewish? What does that have to do with it?
White is SO out of style, didn't you know?
Or should I say black is the new black?
Rebecca is one of my all time favorite movies!
Where can I pay Breitbart so I don't have to see these horrible ads with fat bikini blondes drawn with photosplat and some hoaxers trying to get me to order something over the internet? I'm never gonna click on em and I'd much rather 10 bucks a month or so of my money directly to Andrew Breitbart to fund his private helicopter dream fund..
Hey, Bush went into Afghanistan with the goal of getting him and smashing the Taliban. He did neither.
Maybe so. That's what I've always said. Everyone blames Clinton for not getting him but then neither Gore nor Bush talked about it at all during their campaign.
And you can make fun of Kerry's war record all you want but the fact remains, he went to Vietnam and Bush didn't.
Second that, and would also add the giraffe pooting flowers as an argument.
That said, though, Dr. Grodwort's Weta Raygun or whatever it is, is pretty interesting. Not interesting enough to make me click it, though.
However, Mr. Breitbart is probably getting a more guaranteed income from the ads than our "donations" would provide him. Firefox and Adblock Plus are the way to go…..
What a lousy thing to do…but guaranteed to get him the divorce. Very cruelly manipulative. He and Leigh certainly deserved each other.
"A great actor? Yes. A decent man? Are you kidding !"
There was a reason why actors used to be looked down upon in "polite society." That was unfair — there are some decent people in the profession (the fellow highlighted in this video, for instance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swHHoC1XYk8 )– but it reflected a truth that we've ignored over the 20th Century and so find ourselves at a point some 180 degrees from that "polite society" today, where Hollywood is invited to dinner at the White House and anyone with good sense wonders where all the trash came from.
What you reward, you get more of. Olivier's private life was overlooked by the public and the PR machine, and so he kept on at it. He's an interesting link between acceptable behavior for actors in the past (his military service) and present (his narcissism, self-indulgence, and other habits that enabled the trash that followed him, in which we are still awash).
Lord Lawrence Olivier = LOL
owned!
Hey, BEAT that dead horse! Your inane reply is NWAR (not worth a response). Move on, nothing more to see here.

If you liked that film, check out "The Duellists", with Keith Carradine and Harvey Keitel. French army officers fighting a series of duels over several years during and after the Napoleonic Wars. Directed by Ridley Scott.

CNN non-partisan, give me a break! Now that Dobbs is gone Bill Bennet is the only conservative left
on the Clinton News Network. At least Fox has apposing views. See Geraldos show, O 'Reilly, Hannitys great American panel. Shep Smith for your info,is a liberal.
I just posted a comment. No problem.
Well Bin Laden getting away certainly seems to be.
This type of behavior is to be expected when you are a self-centered boob. Nothing else matters except your happiness, your spouse and children be damned. Many of the "beautiful" people in Hollywood exhibit this condition and yet they feel justified in preaching to the rest of us.
How are you commenting? You don't appear to be logging in.
It's only a dead horse to you because you don't like hearing it because it puts Bush in a bad light.
No it doesn't. Uhggg…..I am so achey off today.
although flying F-102's was probably more dangerous- they had an annoying tendency to blow up on the flightline- than Kerry's manipulated misadventures in 'Nam. Either way makes no difference…
Oh, but Gingrich will preach Family Values all day long to anyone who will listen. And to those who don't want to.
Nice try. The fact is George never put himself deliberately in harm's way by going to Vietnam, yet during the 2004 campaign Kerry was mocked for his service.
And it does make a difference. It just points out yet another failure by Bush. Especially after all his "smoke 'em out of their caves" rhetoric.
actually George Bush volunteered for Operation Palace Guard, but was not qualified in the F-4's they were using and didn't have enough active duty time left to train. Kerry faked most of his so-called 'adventures'; he lied about being in Cambodia and volunteered to write the after action reports for his Boat Squadron so he could advance his career through his exaggerations.
This is all true. He is hated by most of the' Swifties' who knew him, and his Silver Star and Purple Heart are seriously disputed. He only served for a few months as a Riverine and was regarded as a shameless self promoter.
'W' never made much of his service unlike Kerry. So if you're going to go down this route know whay you are taliking about- and it helps to have served…
I've heard about Bush volunteering but, oddly enough, there's no proof like transfer requests etc. to back it up. And if he'd really wanted to serve he could have joined the army or marines. All this talk about Kerry's made up record is really up to conjecture. But there are two facts. Kerry put his boots in Vietnam and George opted not to.
And your right, Kerry talked way to much about his service and the Republican party managed to smear it but W couldn't really talk much about his service because there wasn't much to say.
They were still talking about Kerry in the last campaign. I was watching Rudy Gulliani's speach at the republican convention and he was smearing everyone in the democratic party and when he got to Kerry he said, "And John Kerry, he went to Vietnam!". Big grin, big laughs from the audience. It was pretty disgusting because yeh, Kerry went to Vietnam and Bush didn't. Neither did Cheney or Wolfowitz or Libby. I think Rumsfeld was old enough to go to Korea but I don't think he did.
And guess what, Rudy didn't go to Vietnam either yet he stood there and mocked someone who did. I thought it was all about thanking people for their service with you guys.
OMG, I love Laurence Olivier
Nuthin' to say?
