I really did love him in Disney's "Pollyanna."
He was the moral voice of the movie Patton when he player Omar Bradley. He also had the wonderful role playing the good Father that won him the Oscar in On the Waterfront.
Michelle Obama has been chosen to replace Oprah in a show called Michelle O
Tina Brown said on GMA that Michelle O is the only possible replacement for Oprah. I imagine what a Michelle O show would look like.
Att: SNL This would make a cute skit. Have your people call my people.
The streets of San Francisco have sure changed since he is gone.
You Racist , Bible thumping ,Islamophobe ,Homophobe ,Rightwing Teabagger !

Hoffman considering recount claim
Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman said on Friday he is considering filing a recount claim in light of computer irregularities that have been reported. He has until Monday to make that decision.
Mr. Hoffman conceded the New York's 23rd Congressional District race to winner Democrat Bill Owens on Election Night, but has had second thoughts.

I just read Brian Williams' garbage about Jon Stewart. Wow. Journalism really is dead. Thank goodness for Andrew Breitbart!

Wow, that's a big nose!
I just realized Sarah Palin's book "Going Rogue" will create-or-save more private sector jobs than 0bama's 'shamulus' bill!
Don't leave home with out it!
DemocratSS STEAL elections – it's what they do, it's endemic, it's part of Dem DNA
while Malden was fine as Gen Omar Bradley in 'Patton'…
In real life Bradley was a sanctimonious, unimaginative prude- and a failure as a battlefield commander. Patton's 'excesses' forced Ike to promote Bradley over Patton- but during the Ardennes offensive (Battle of the Bulge) Bradley seriously underestimated- again- the Germans ability to fight and put green recruits in the Ardennes to train. They were svaged by the German advance. Meanwhile, Bradley was in France celebrating Ike's birthday…
24 hours later Ike pretty much took Bradlet out of the mix- he gave his support forces to Montgomeryin the north and had Patton save the day from the south, much to Bradley's humiliation.
He tried to resign- but Ike said if 'I wanted you to resign I would have told you to do it'!
Omar Bradley- a well meaning bureacrat but not a top flight General…
Some things never change…
The following is a letter written by H.L. Mencken to Rascoe Peacock in 1937:
Dear Peacock:
It is not the lack of better men that causes [Time magazine founder Henry] Luce to employ pinks; it is simply the fact that they are cheaper. At least four-fifths of the really competent authors of the country are against the present reign of hooey. I marvel that some one doesn't set up a conservative weekly and turn them loose. Such a weekly, if it were carried on with wit, would be an immediate and permanent success. As things stand, the pinks have all the sounding boards.
The editors accumulated by Luce are mainly incompetent. Both Fortune and Time are inaccurate and silly. The style of writing that they have popularized is palpably fifth rate.
Yours,
Mencken
Sounds as fresh as today's headlines, doesn't it?
The left's hatred of Sarah Palin will get her elected President. I'm starting to wonder if Sarah has pulled a William Castle and hired people to attack her. If only the left feared terrorists like they do Palin…
"…………Sarah has pulled a William Castle and hired people to attack her. "
William Castle?
…."If only the left feared terrorists like they do Palin… "
They do
But then there is whose definition of terrorist you are thinking.
…"The Department of Homeland Security is warning law enforcement agencies that recent news is helping "right-wing extremist groups" recruit new members and could lead to violence, and warns about the possible recruitment and radicalization of returning veterans. "http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/04/14/homeland-security-warns-rise-right-wing-extremism/
…"ter·ror·ist (trr-st)
n.
One that engages in acts or an act of terrorism" http://www.thefreedictionary.com/terrorist

I thought it was interesting to see the response to Andrew's Palin remarks on Kudlow. He thought that she should remain a populist organizer for now, rather then a run in 2012. The response was virtriolic and damning. But Brietbart has a good point. I think Sarah is refreshing, honest and smart – moreso than the occupier now, but it takes a certain brand of armour to govern in this attack mode society. The msm will always be harassing her, much like Bush. They'll throw consistant barriers, but worse, they'll keep after her kids. Who needs that? But there is time to see how the whole thing shakes out. Right now, I'd love to see her running the RNC. There is a golden opportunity – and it's time to sieze the moment – IMO
News you can LOVE !
Obama hints he may not run in 2012
Yes, I know. The chances of this guy giving up office are pretty close to zero.
But the reason I'm highlighting this piece by Steve Kraske from Prime Buzz is twofold; 1) Obama is trying to preempt charges of failure with the "I did the best I could but the problems were just too big" excuse; and 2) this is Obama at his whiny worst:
"You know, if – if I feel like I've made the very best decisions for the American people and three years from now I look at it and, you know, my poll numbers are in the tank and because we've gone through these wrenching changes, you know, politically, I'm in a tough spot, I'll – I'll feel all right about myself," Obama told CNN's Ed Henry.
http://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2009/11/obama...
/We can hope this happens
Are you suggesting Republicans should run someone more benign? Less opinionated? Less woman?
Maybe we should start attacking the attackers who have shamelessly preyed on her teens. Why do you suppose we give that behavior a pass?
William Castle (producer and director of films like "House on Haunted Hill", "Mr. Sardonicus", and "13 Ghosts") was known for the gimmicks he devised to attract people to watch his movies. Early in his career Castle was producing a play in the late 30s starring a German actress who had fled her country because of Hitler. Castle hired some guys to vandalize the theater that had been rented. The "protestors" also painted swastikas on the walls. The play got media coverage and made money.
Absolutely not Wanda. Sarah is on fire. She's at the top of my list and I'd love her to win, but I don't want her to burn out. I just think there is room for discussion, not like the other side that likes to eat their own. I don't know what a-hole made up the rules, but they get away with murder and we get the chair. It's not fair – but reality. Andrew sure did stir up a hornets nest.
What the hell? Put your post in code or something.
His win was for "Streetcar Named Desire" – He did get a nomination for "Waterfront" however.
I do, too. And I'm not saying anything offensive to anyone. What's going on?
and you know, if he'd gotten it fixed like any wanna-be actor these days would, he probably wouldn't have been near as great.
Boy, does it! Thanks for the juicy morsel. I feel better now!
You're correct, but, forget 'hope'. Let's do all we can to MAKE it happen by voting for people who really MEAN what they say, and ACT on it…rather than the glib posers who want our support. Throw out the whiney and the timid in 2010.
I love what he keeps hollering in that.
Fist fight between Karl Malden and Lee J. Cobb – who would win?
we'll take Malden in that- a TKO in the third…
Attention Senator Landrieu (D-LA):
You just sold your country out for the $100 million 0bama promised you…so you and the fu**ing Democraps are done!
He better think twice, if he asks for a recount, Al Franken may wind up winning.
It was doing strange things to me too for a few weeks.
And i wonder how the "culture of corruption" is doing…
Of all that Malden did over hte years I think I will always remember him for the Amex commercials
I want a TIDAL WAVE of conservative voters sweeping in PRINCIPALED CONSERVATIVES and FLUSHING LIBERALS OUT!
Isn't it about time for Tio Chano to review "New Moon" for BH?
I just sent her office an e-mail wondering why it only cost $100 million for her to whore out her vote.
I think conservatives suffer from this feeling that we must always be on the defensive. As if there is something inherently wrong with our ideals. We need to start pointing directly at people who use Palin as their punching bag and calling them out for what they are rather than saying, \”Sure she likes to hunt, she is from Alaska where some women do that (not us mind you – because aside from our ideals we are really like you so please like us\”.
Why aren't we saying \”Sure I support Sarah! Why are you belittling a woman who could have taken the easy route and aborted her kid, but chose to abide by her morals and faith, saw virtue in all life and not only had her baby, but advocates fiercely for him. How is it that something to mock?\”
Everyone is so scared she is going to run for an office. WHY oh WHY can't they simply embrace a person who gives a strong, believable and interesting voice to conservatism?
When we pidgeon hole her, we act on behalf of the haters.

Done? If only we could be sure of that. The drones will not mind a little corruption.
I think the key sentence is "I'll feel all right about myself".
eh, she's a cheap whore…$100 million doesn't even get Gore's lips wet anymore.
I agree about not being on the defense. I respect Palin very much, and have no problem admitting it. But she cannot get elected President in 2012. They key problem is her quitting the governorship. Like it or not, that ended her career in elected office for the foreseeable future. We know the reasons, we may not care, but the majority out there will not vote for her.

I do not pretend to know her plans. If she decides to run, we will see what it mattered. I agree that it certainly does not look good.
BUT
I wonder why people are drawn to pointing out THAT and letting the other things about her fall to the wayside. Did you see Obama supporters saying \”You know I really like Obama, but he hangs with Bill Ayers and subscribes to the racist doctrine of Rev. Wright for 20 years.\” Or \”I adore Obama, but he has only been in the senate for a year and always refuses to vote on any controversial legislation\”
See?
Instead of rallying behind a lady who embodies much of what conservatism is at its core – who is able to make people proud and excited to stand for their principles, we take the strange fallback position of pointing to a small flaw. It is like receiving a sweater for Christmas and although it is gorgeous and made from strong yet soft yarn, we do not appreciate those qualities, but instead point to the one incorrectly knitted stitch in the armpit.
Yes. Everyone is getting knitting from me for Christmas. So knitting analogies for the rest of the year!

I'm not sure we are "on the defensive" as much as just polite. My theory for quite some time has been, Most true conservatives tend to be Christian or at least have been brought up in that ethos. We tend to have been raised (at least somewhat) by the "Golden Rule' and "turn the other cheek". We aren't afraid, we aren't belligerent, we are polite. This is what is both fundamentally wrong and right with us. The real problem with us being this way is that the other side soon forgets that we number in the millions and don't enjoy being pushed around and belittled any more than they would. But, (as the saying goes). Don't wake a sleeping giant because, oh baby the worm does turn.
Well maybe I didn't get the saying perfect …..
Classic Peanuts strip (hope I remember it right):
Marcie: Did you bring your library card, sir?
Peppermint Patty: Of course, Marcie – I never leave home without it!
Marcie: Karl Malden would be proud of you, sir.
Peppermint Patty: What, Marcie?
Marcie: Nothing, sir.
Everyone is getting knitting from me for Christmas.
I'd like a pair of socks, please. I wear a size 12 shoe.
You're right, and that's the main reason IMHO, that they HATED Dubya. They tried like he!! to get away with stealing that one, and it didn't work. It couldn't be for "No Child Left Behind," or the "Prescription Drug Plan." Perhaps the war, but then again Dem/libs hate any war the USA is in especially if we're winning.
I didn't know that Bradly was sanctimonious and prudish, but it does seem to make sense. What little I know of Gen. Brad is that he liked to work out Trigonometry problems. This impresses me in that I had to look up how the spell Trigonometry, much less figure out those math solutions.
Anyhow, being the WWII junkie that I am, your post piqued my interest, and I'm going to look for some books on the subject. If you have any suggestions, feel free to let me know.
Cheers!
I did not think people in CA wore socks. Learn somethin' new every day. Size 12 huh? Seems like you might not want to hide such a foot… ahem… being that it is a true foot and all.

I'll take Lee J in 6. That nose is such an incredible target – and if that doesn't work, Lee J. will scowl him scared.
I loved him in "Nevada Smith." Steve McQueen was great, as usual, in it, and Karl is one of the best second lead movie actors of all time IMHO. The ending scene between him and McQueen is riveting, as with the beautiful location in which it was filmed.
check out the show 'Commanders' on Discovery; it's on the military ch as well. The one on the Bulge will show you just how outclassed he was by Model. Ike promoted Bradley over Pattonbasically to keep the brilliant but explosive General in check. Bradley's four stars were, in effect the Peter principle- he was promoted to the top level of his incompetence…
He was a devout churchgoer who found the profane Patton an obnoxious boor. He was no dummy- the trig stuff is for real- but he lacked both vision and the gambler's mentality that denotes great leaders. A good man, yes. But not a particulalry inspired commander…
Nothing like WWII history to get the ol' blood going… enjoy.
Fight ends when Broderick Crawford grabs them by the necks and thumps their nuggets together.
I don't remember if I saw the "Commanders" show you mentioned, but will certainly keep an eye out for it. You are so correct, there isn't anything like some good ole WWII history, to get the blood flowing. I also like reading about the American Civil War, aka the War of Northern Aggression, as well as, WWI. I am a warfare nut I suppose.
BTW Seahawks, for which dad has seasons tix, are in Minnesota to take on the Farve Vikes tomorrow. I have bad feelings for the 'Hawks. So we'll see what happens. I like the Seahawks, but have grown up being a NY football Giant fan.
We need to rediscover that polite does not mean keeping our hands to our side and whispering words of encouragement in their ear as they deliver body blows.
Having self respect and strength of character are things to be proud of.

Apparently he thinks opposition to the health care bill is Orwellian!
Um… Wut?
Anyone see the vid of Martha Stewart talking about Sarah Palin today? Someone sent it to me, but I erased it. Martha thinks Sarah is dangerous because she is boring. Jeesh.
I can't believe he was born with that nose and still ended up in Hollywood, a great actor.
that is a really stupid thing to say. Only a libtard could be that stupid. You deserve to be run off a quite road at night by shadowy figures for saying such a thing. You deserve it for stupidity if not for treason.
Holy shit, yes.
Martha Stewart said Sarah Palin is a "dangerous person."
Hmmmm……let's see…..now who has been in PRISON???
Want to know why Bradley came off as the hero in the film "Patton?" Probably because the military adviser for the film was…Omar Bradley!
I'll bet Martha doesn't have a recipe for Moose Chili.
MmmmMmmmmm…. I'll bet Sarah's moose chili is good, too! Especially with a hunk of cornbread or a basket of corn chips and jalapeno salsa!
O no.
He expects to be appointed for life by 2012.
Ha! Loved her "moose chili" line. The elites will never know what to make of her.
If Martha said Sarah Palin is boring, she's more than likely trying to keep up her liberal creds. She does have a TV show to worry about, and anything less than a slam on our Sarah, will get her canceled by the powers to be. Doesn't that McCarthyism or should is say reverse McCarthyism, work great for the libs? Keeps all the media elite in PC line.
I hated him (yes, strong word) in Nevada Smith because he played the villain so good. Brian Keith was great too. The scene where Smith buys a reading book then chugs a can of peaches is funny. Dude had his priorites in order.
I would love to watch their eyes cross if she gets elected to a top office!
You're the one who wants the games to begin (re: your '9/11 travesty' post). If you and I were in the stands, I would not enter the field-of-play to stop him from stepping up so-to-speak.
Yes he was a good villian, as he was a semi-villian/greedy tobacco farmer in the movie "Parrish." Brian Keith was good in this film, as well as, Suzanne Pleshette. Great locations in the film also. I'm not the biggest western movie fan out there, but I liked this one. Karl was one of the greats, flat out, IMO, RIP Karl!!
Yeah, she didn't ask Sarah for it, and now she's embarrassed so she's going off on Palin. Go figure!
I'm going to borrow this fine thought. Hope you don't mind, JK.
My thoughts exactly…
Odd Saturday and no one really mentioned Malden's other fine films – just from 1940 – 1970 (edited) Many blockbusters and Hollywood classics:
Patton (1970) …. Gen. Omar N. Bradley
Nevada Smith (1966) …. Tom Fitch
The Cincinnati Kid (1965) …. Shooter
Cheyenne Autumn (1964) …. Capt. Wessels
Gypsy (1962) …. Herbie Sommers
How the West Was Won (1962) …. Zebulon Prescott
Birdman of Alcatraz (1962) …. Harvey Shoemaker
All Fall Down (1962) …. Ralph Willart
Parrish (1961) …. Judd Raike
One-Eyed Jacks (1961) …. Sheriff Dad Longworth
The Great Impostor (1961) …. Father Devlin – St. Augustine School
Pollyanna (1960) …. Reverend Paul Ford
The Hanging Tree (1959) …. Frenchy Plante
Bombers B-52 (1957) …. Master Sergeant Chuck V. Brennan, Line Chief
Fear Strikes Out (1957) …. John Piersall
Baby Doll (1956) …. Archie Lee Meighan
On the Waterfront (1954) …. Father Barry
Take the High Ground! (1953) …. Sgt. Laverne Holt
I Confess (1953) …. Inspector Larrue
Ruby Gentry (1952) …. Jim Gentry
A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) …. Harold 'Mitch' Mitchell
Halls of Montezuma (1950) …. PHM2 C.E. 'Doc' Jones
Where the Sidewalk Ends (1950) …. Lt. Thomas
The Gunfighter (1950) …. Mac
Kiss of Death (1947) …. Sgt. William Cullen
Boomerang! (1947) (uncredited) …. Det. Lt. White
13 Rue Madeleine (1947) (uncredited) …. Jump Master
Winged Victory (1944) (as Cpl. Karl Malden) …. Adams
They Knew What They Wanted (1940) …. Red
It depends on the script, of course.
I think they gave him a fifth star before he retired.
though he is fantastic in Streetcar and Waterfront my favorite role of his is in One Eyed Jacks. Immensely talented actor who always added something very human to every character he occupied. we need more Karl Maldens in cinema.
Where is Open Thread Sunday?
This is the 46 anniversary of the JFK murder in Dallas.
Of course not. Help yourself.
I think Sarah's book could lift all boats.
Another outstanding Gary Indiana guy…Joe Sekulavich…aka Karl Malden
Exactly. Bradley was also the technical advisor on "Patton" and made sure he was portrayed as positively as possible at the expense of Patton. Patton was the great general; Bradley was pedestrian at best.
Hey, Ernie Pyle liked Omar Bradley, the "soldier's general," which is enough for me; and Bradley also had quite a career.
To carry over the John Ford connection, Karl Malden's scene in "Cheyenne Autumn" is so good, it almost makes the rest of the movie worth watching. Well, it's worth watching anyway, in spite of the cringes, because it is a Ford movie, but…argh.
In "Autumn," Malden is so good, though, in how he brings the "German-ness" of his character to life; and then his silence and the physical way he conducts himself at the end of the scene really makes you feel the horror. I don't know: it's hard to imagine anybody else doing that combination of spoken and physical acting as well as Karl Malden did. If Malden had been around earlier in Ford's career, I'll bet he would have been a member of the "stock company," too.
excellent point. Well done…
the show is 'Commanders at War' and it's on Discovery HD theater, if you do not have HD it's on Military Channel. It takes a famous battle and pits both generals against each other.
Terrific show, accurate and well done. 'WWII in HD' just finished it's run on History Channel; it will be in repeats. 10 episodes there. Great books include 'American Ceasar' about MacArthur, 'Patton' by Ladislas Farago, Wm L Shirer's 'Rise and Fall of the Third Reich'.
Modern books include 'Blackhawk Down'- very well researched and written. 'The Forgotten War' about Korea, and don't forget 'Battles B.C.' on History Channel- great takes on Caesar, King David, and Hannibal.
Enjoy…
not sure about that, the five star thing was a political hot potato after MacArthur took Truman on for size- we'll check on that one…
upon further review- he was the final 5 star- appointed by Truman- he knew a compliant officer when he saw one and feared the political power of both MacArthur- whom he defeated- and Ike who he lost to…
and the film was notable for the lack of explanation WHY the Ardennes was going so poorly for the Allies. Patton saving his butt was his greatest humiliation as a commanding officer. He didn't take the Germans seriously; Monty was guilty of the same during Operation Market Garden… they both thought the nazis a defeated force on the run.
And they were both wrong.
I saw most of WWII in HD on the History channel with my dad, he loves the stuff like we do. I am familiar with the titles you mentioned, and need to get around to watching and reading, just been a little too busy of late.
I started reading Winston Churchill's volumes on the WWII, and they're great if your get the chance, he's a very good writer with great first hand knowledge, and politcal insight. I gotta finish the 1st book. For me learning about WWII is a lifelong quest as I can't get enough of it, and there is so much material.
not just that- the lessons- life lessons- taught by a generational conflict should not be lost on those too young to recall- remember Santayana's admonition: 'those who forget history are doomed to repeat it'…
