Christian Toto: ‘The Blind Side’ — Another Bush Sucker Punch?
by Big Hollywood–
Christian Toto:
“The new drama “The Blind Side” tells the story of a homeless black teen who is taken in by a Christian family led by Sandra Bullock.
“It’s a heartwarming story based on the life of NFL lineman Michael Oher.
“So why does the film feel the need to awkwardly squeeze in a slam at former president George W. Bush?”

I WAS SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING GOING TO SEE THIS MOVIE NOW I'M NOT
I believe there was some piece of legislation passed this spring which required at least 75% of new movies to have some derogatory reference to conservatives (or George W Bush) contained somewhere in the script or the scenery.
Or maybe everyone writing for Hollywood knows this is the only way to get your POS script read and bought.
Weak.
There are others who will slam the current admin coming soon, just give it time.
In a way, I agree, but the slams from movies and tv will be because Comrade Obama isn't liberal enough, not because he's leading us toward socialism.
“So why does the film feel the need to awkwardly squeeze in a slam at former president George W. Bush?”
Because, it's who they are. Yet another movie to avoid like the plague.
Well they DID want to get the movie made, didn't they!!??
BDS is the drug of choice here in Hollyweird. Really, start bashing GWB and doors open because suddenly you have something to talk about with anyone else in the biz.
*sigh* I thought that this would finally be a movie that was heartwarming and could be watched without a political point of view being forced down ones throat. I think it's more like 90% of new movies have to take digs at conservatives, "middle Americans" or the Bush administration. The rest just have to star actors who have done so.
Well, I guess it's not racist anymore.
Do not avoid this movie because some screen writer felt the need to put a few liberal zingers in what is actually a good story. The TRUE story will overcome any liberal bias that the screen writers insert. I would suggest you see the movie ten write the Production Company about your feelings on the unnecessary slams. There are too few movies made that are inspired by actual events such as this we need to let this movie succeed if we want to see more of this kind made. I agree the slam is not only unwaranted but also stupid because who do they think the target audience is anyway.
When is the last time you saw a substantive slam on Bill Clinton? Or Jimmy Carter? Or Johnson or JFK..or FDR…or Woodrow Wilson. Don't hold your breath for the Obama critique. It ain't coming.
Seeing as this is a movie about a young black man being taken in and raised by a nice white family, it's understandable that the writers needed to make sure we all knew they weren't racists… because they hate Bush too.
Lefty logic…
Agreed Rich.
Don't let this poison the entire movie. It's still a good movie that liberals HATE.
Read Worldmag.com's review of the movie.
Oh, well, another possible movie night killed. Can't remember the last movie we went to, and we used to go at least twice a month.
I respectful disagree with you that it is a good idea for self-identified Christians who are politically aligned with conservatism should pay to see this movie and then write a strongly-worded letter to the studio and production company voicing our displeasure with the movie's bias against us.
If you pay to see the movie knowing that your voting bloc is mocked and derided, then the studio and production company have no reason to think that mocking and deriding your voting bloc is anything other than a success. They won't have time to read your letter outlining your reasoned criticism of their screenwriters' dialogue choices because they'll be too busy COUNTING THE MONEY THEY MADE FROM YOU.
Boycott HOLLYWEIRD…..stay home and do not buy their DVDs!
You want to see good to great movies?
STAY HOME AND WATCH TCM !
Okay, I watched the trailer twice and I didn't see any slam. What am I missing?
Going to get crushed at the b.o. by The New Moonies regardless…

Let me see…a movie about the true story of a white Christian family adopting an underprivileged black teenager and changing the course of both his life and their lives….and you are trying to turn people off to it for ONE line in the whole movie – an anti-Bush slam which as we all know is now a prerequisite for getting any screenplay greenlighted? Grasping. At. Straws.
Is it really THAT slow a newsday, BH? I would expect better.
I was going over power point notes for a geology test and the liberal old lady professor couldn't resist taking a swipe at Sarah Palin – IN COURSE MATERIAL FOR A TEST AT A MAJOR TEXAS UNIVERSITY!
This crap is everywhere, the bigger a loser Obama is turning out to be the more Bush will brought up as some kind on shield, to save the idiot Messiah.
I had attended my first movie in seven years–ironically, the soccer movie The Damned United–because I had earned money as an extra while I was out of work, and felt I could lift my boycott out of gratitude. I was looking forward to this movie ever since the book came out. There is nothing these evil, wheedling movie creeps can't ruin. Nothing.
Thanks for the info; I almost considered seeing this movie. I won't even watch it on Netflix now.
I second that – "Gilmore Girls" last night in vivid technicolor. WOW! Young Angela landsbury looking stunning and Julie Garland looking lovely in 1946.
I didnt see anything either, i missed it to.
It won't be from Hollywood, that's what I mean.
BH is doing a service by letting us know about this crap so we as consumers can make informed entertainment purchase decisions.
Cutting off the studio's money supply is the only way to turn that greenlight off.
It's not in the trailer. You have to go to the link to read about it.
I don't know…I generally would be inclined to say "screw this flick" for the typical Hollywood bias but I instantly thought back to the opening sceens of "Scarface" (80's version) where pictures of Carter and I think Mondale are hanging prominently in the interview rooms where the newly arrived criminal Cubans are being interrogated.
"Thanks" Jimmah "F–king" Carter for that debacle and the presence of the photos seem to be saying that too.
I love Sandra Bullock because she still maintains her transplanted roots to my beloved Austin as much as she can being Mrs. Jesse James and she is one stunning 40 something lady.
I'll wait to the crowds die down and catch it on the cheap as a matinee.
During "NCIS" last week, two of the characters are shot at by an overly-emotional woman when she mistakes the agents at her door for thugs.
One of the agents screams to the woman: "Hey, who do you think you are… Sarah Palin?"
That show has been sliding downhill for about a year now since Bellisario left. I've taken it out of my DVR's series recording queue before it sinks any lower.
I have to disagree. Perhaps the only way to end this politicalization of every movie that comes down the pike is to simply boycott Hollywood until they get the message. Wait for the DVD if you must pay to watch it.
I guess I just don't consider a one-liner about Bush akin to taking the Lord's name in vain….and I have yet to see John Nolte, a devoted Catholic, tell people to avoid films that do that.
yup. cheap, silly and seemingly out of context. sounds like today's Hollywood.
I miss the "Duke" and Jimmy Stewart and the legions of great stars and as for T.V. I can't even pick out a show I really miss.
Thanks Hollywood, my wife and I are really seeing the savings, not seeing your crappy movies.
I read the link but I think this is a pretty obscure stuff. As others have said on similar issues, bitching about stuff like this just makes us look thin-skinned. What are the odds that an African-American female "civil" servant would hold Bush in a favorable light? I say let it go, support the movie for the overall message it gets across, and move on.
I'm all in favor of boycotting brain-dead actors and directors, but I think this doesn't pass the smell test.
"and you are trying to turn people off to it for ONE line in the whole movie – an anti-Bush slam which as we all know is now a prerequisite for getting any screenplay greenlighted?"
Nonsense. That film also gets made without any Bush-bashing content. At some point, enough is enough, and I was planning on seeing this, but not now.
First of all don't assume this really didn't happen. Remember this is based on a true story. I can totally see a government worker being obnoxious. The worker is technically not lying so she can't be punished while not truly answering the question who her real supervisor is. No one asked the screenwriters if they made it up or if it really happened. And is it really slamming the former president or lazy government workers?
Don't give Hollywood an excuse not to make movies that show Christians as positive characters by letting 15 seconds keep you from seeing it.
WORLD ( a conservative Christian magazine) recently did an article noting how "The Blind Side" affirms, not mocks, conservative Christians:
http://www.worldmag.com/articles/16071
Soon after, WORLD posted a timely commentary by Cal Thomas who addresses the debate over the movie:
http://www.worldmag.com/webextra/16126
The victim thing is getting old. Conservatives have a significant presence in virtually every venue they like to denounce. That includes government (though not this one) and especially the media. Talk radio rules and the rulers are conservatives. Fox News Channel dominates the ratings. The conservative presence in academia lags, but there are universities that do not revise American history and mock religious values. Movies? There are some with solid conservative principles, such as Sandra Bullock’s latest film, The Blind Side. Will conservatives go see it, or are they more comfortable denouncing “Hollywood”? How about reinforcements for those conservatives already “making it” in the mainstream media?
Just something to think about.
If you let one little instance of political insult determine that you will not see this movie then you will doom the rest of us. We want to see more movies made that have the themes that this movie has. The only way more good movies will be made is if people go see them, if you want more of the same old tripe that Hollywood is so good at producing then not going and not supporting this movie will get that result. Go to the link and find out what the slam is and you will find it meaningless.
Fine. I'll do it:
"Don't see movies where the characters use the name of God as a profanity."
I've earned several free movie passes over the years from our grocery store's rewards card. At least 90% of the time I've ended up giving them away b/c there was aboslutely nothing at the multiplex that I cared to see.
Sandra Bullock is not attractive enough to be a movie star.
I don't fathom those people who bash Bush the way they do. As I recall, it was Bush who warned the people of New Orleans to evacuate the city two days before Hurricane Katrina struck. And it was Bush who responded to the murderers of 9-11-2001 by taking out the Taliban in Afghanistan and Sadam Hussein in Iraq. After a year of Obamatons and Pelosibots running the country, I'm really missing the man. 2010 and 2012 can't come soon enough. And about that movie, I'd rather pour Tobasco sauce in my eyes than watch it.
Die Hollywood Die!
Please die before you begin making a decade worth of 'Dear Hunter' anti-Afghanistan war movies blaming GWB after your evil President Hollywood gives up and loses the Islamic Jihadist war against the West.
Die Hollywood Die, your empire is evil.
And another thing; your Steven Spielbergs of the Hollywood world would delight in the destruction of Israel just for their own movie material.
I HATE HOLLYWOOD!
So then, you do consider a Bush joke the same as taking the Lord's name in vain?

/>Politics and morality are inseparable. And as morality's foundation is religion, religion and politics are necessarily related. We need religion as a guide. We need it because we are imperfect, and our government needs the church, because only those humble enough to admit they're sinners can bring to democracy the tolerance it requires in order to survive. ~ Ronald Reagan

A state office probably would have a picture of the governor, not the president.
When I read the linked article and it referred to the bemused government employee pointing to President Bush, she does not seem like the kind of character whose opinion of Bush would matter, or would ever vote for him. It is not like the family that takes in Michael is bashing Bush, it's the govt. worker with the careless attitude bashing Bush. I still plan to see this movie.
RE: Oliver Stone's "Scarface"
When Tony Montana is interrogated by the three tough-talking immigration officers over his life in Cuba, the images of Carter and Mondale are there to show two things:
1) The movie was released in 1983 and having the images of Carter/Mondale establishes the timeframe for Montana's arrival in America
2) Showing Carter/Mondale in the background of the shots with the immigration officers that are hesitant to allow Montana in because of his background establishes that America (particularly America's government under the Carter Administration) values law and order, while Montana and his best friend represent an unwanted violent criminal element in society
Oliver Stone planned every scene and set piece in "Scarface" with these intentions… just as the writers and director of "The Blind Side" planned the Dubya cheap shot in their movie.
I read about this film in an ad over at The Corner yesterday, and I thought, "No way. They won't be able to play this story straight."
I hate having good instincts sometimes.
No big deal, just another movie I won't see.
Do you consider your notion that Christian conservatives in America that voted overwhelmingly for George W. Bush in two elections should pay to see a movie with a cheap shot at George W. Bush as a smart monetary investment in a recession just because the movie is being marketed as a feel-good holiday movie with Christian overtones?
You're painting Christian audiences with a stupid brush.
Bette Davis wasn't "pretty", nor were a multitude of other men and women who made acting a career precisely because they knew character development requires more than a glance at the exterior of a body.
If this is a true story from recent times, then having a picture of Bush hanging in a government office is not a slam, it is an attempt at realism. Government offices have pictures of the sitting president up on their wall. Deal with it. If the character playing the government worker makes some sort of gesture to imply it's Bush's fault, that's par for the course…maybe they didn't vote for Bush (hmm, black female government worker…what are the odds?) You'd probably have a similar response to a picture of Obama today.
Believe me, I'm all for boycotting true overt insults toward Middle America, Christians, tea partiers, etc. I just think this one isn't worth the fuss. It makes conservatives look petty.
oh ya, I understand the imagery in "Scarface". F. Murray Abraham grew up in El Paso and has many relatives here. My Dad was visiting a friend of his at her flower shop in the 80's and in come F. Murray. His cousin asked him what he was up to career wise and spoke quite candidly (according to my Dad) about hating his role in "Scarface" but it was a job. Of course 'Amadeus' was right around the corner for him.
Not a chance. I've been going to the movies for 70 years and have never seen a even a modest criticism of anything leftwing.
Another actor not to watch! When will they just shut up and undersatnd it is THEY who are in the minority!
Aren't the real people portrayed in this movie Conservatives, I don't take it as a slam to GWB, it is a picture of him because he was in office at the time and prolly because most government offices have a pic of the current Pres
Um. I'm pretty sure Sandra Bullock didn't write the screenplay or direct the film. No need to hold this against her. And on a scale of 1 to 100, this one isn't even double digits.
If the book is the real story, then it makes more sense to just read the book… especially since Hollywood movie adaptions are notorious for changing the events, characters, and themes in popular novels to fit their political agenda (see "Starship Troopers" "The Scarlet Letter" just about anything from Michael Chricton that he didn't direct himself).
“So why does the film feel the need to awkwardly squeeze in a slam at former president George W. Bush?”
Because he is automatically funny as a symbol of incompetence.
Oh?
I'm still waiting for Hollywood to slam the Clinton and Carter administrations.
Again, I respectfully disagree. Movies are made through months (and sometimes years) of meticulous planning; therefore this cheap shot against the millions of people that voted for George W. Bush in two national elections was not some meaningless ad lib from an actor wanting some extra screen time with Sandra Bullock.
The only way more good movies will be made is if the stranglehold of leftist groupthink is broken in Hollywood. There are only two ways that will happen:
1) Artists with libertarian/conservative political views flood the entertainment talent pool
2) Consumers choke off the money supply for leftist dominated entertainment
The second option is (unfortuntely) much more likely than the first. That's exactly why people who don't want " more of the same old tripe that Hollywood is so good at producing" should not pay to see this movie.
This movie *is* the tripe.
Hollywood truly appriciates your spin and money.
You should buy a Powerball ticket!
Hollywood truly appreciates your spin and money.
Actually, Sandra Bullock was impressed that Leigh Anne Tuohy (whom she plays in the film) and her family were Christian in action and not just words:
"One of my biggest issues has always been people who use their faith and their religion as a banner but don't do the right things, yet still go, 'I'm a good Christian and I go to church and this is the way you should live your life. And I'm like, you know, do not give me a lecture about how to live my life when you go to church every week but I know you are still sneaking around on your wife. And I told Leigh Anne in a live interview, one of my largest concerns getting involved with this project was that whole banner-waving thing because it scares me, and I've had experiences that haven't been great with people like that. I don't buy a lot of people who use that banner as their shield. But she was so open and honest and forthright with me I thought, wow, I've finally met someone who practices but doesn't preach."

Frankly, this throwaway line in the movie sounds like a molehill being turned into a mountain.

Frankly, this debate over a throwaway line in the movie sounds like a molehill being turned into a mountain.
Brahahahahah the hits just keep on coming. The Hollyweird industry just keeps shooting itself in the foot everyday. Well she did marry that loser Jesse James who dumped his first wife and kid after his head got swollen after the TV show about his choppers. Obviously her judgment skills are lacking. Yeah Sandra he married you because he loves you. Your money had nothing to do with it Brahahahah.
I agree. It's heartwarming.
Actually, it's a molehill being turned into a mountain range!
I agree. This sounds like a pretty weak dis.
She's better lookin that Babs Streisand but then again, so is my beegle dog's ass
Cal Thomas' argument is ridiculous because AM talk radio (whose listeners skew overwhelmingly male and over 40) has a majority of politically conservative voices does not equate to conservative media dominance or even a significant conservative media presence. Just because we're Christians doesn't mean we have to shamble to the cinema like zombies just because Sandra Bullock is wearing a crucifix in her latest movie.
It should be noted that in the movie, the characters played by Bullock and Tim McGraw are shown as borderline racists with a hatred for those sweet, open minded liberals (McGraw's character even says to Bullock's at one point: "Who'd ever thought we'd have a black son before we knew a Democrat?").
Thomas is wrong and this is not some wonderfully conservative Christian feel good movie. Toto has exposed it as more of the same from Hollwood.
In the movie, the Tim McGraw/Sandra Bullock family is shown to be Christian but it's intimated they harbor some of that sweet, Southern racism and intolerance… this bubbles up when Tim McGraw's character hires a lefty-tutor for their adopted African-American son and remarks to Sandra Bullock's character: "Who ever thought we would have a black son before we knew a Democrat?"
In the movie, it's the family's exposure to the wonderfully open minded lefty tutor and the adopted African-American son that makes them better people. Not their belief in a loving God or in the promise and freedoms of the American Way.
Forget the movie. Read the book – it was politics-free.
The liberals have the tendency to get sclerotic very early, at about 14-16 years old, and their memories and emotions became iron-cast in that age's state of mind – this is the explanation of having in 2009 jokes with W, jokes which are anyway some inside jokes since no one outside of small circle can understand them.
Just a couple of weeks ago someone took me to the LA art thing, downtown LA, and we entered an art show – and guess what! There they were, some Bush cartoons, humorless, pointless and tragicomically anachronistic – and the gallery lady was there, laughing, another tragicomic act, poor her, and pointing out to that and that … now this is soooooo funnny! Now look here! Now look at this!
It was very embarrassing -
And you forgot the mandate that all Blacks be portrayed as some sort of misunderstood angels.
First we had Sandra BS in the White-hating movie "A Time to Kill" (itself a sequel to the White-hating book "To Kill a Mockingbird.) and now another anti-White production. How many Whites will be victimized because they get the impression Blacks are to be trusted? You can open up a newspaper and see one just about every day. And they will NEVER make a movie about the White victims like those attacked by the Carr brothers or Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom.
Great point Brandon, totally agree. And, if the Bush bashing wasn't bad enough, after watching the trailer, Sandra Bullock's character is a turnoff. I wouldn't have wanted to see this movie based on that.
No one told anyone to avoid this film. He just asked a question about the gratuitous Bush remark.
What amazes me most is that anyone who considers themselves to be a conservative or republican is still defending GWB. Not only was he an incompetent and disastrous president – he was a disaster for conservatism and the republican party. I know many of you voted for him, but If a progressive like myself can recognize and acknowledge that many of the things that were said about Clinton were proven true – why are you unwilling to do the same when it comes to Bush?
Nope. Won't pay to see it. They don't want my money.
I just talked to my daughters about changing our plans on seeing this movie over Thanksgiving weekend. We decided our dollars will be better spent doing something worthy. I for one at tired of Hollywood shrewish behavior against Republicans. I for one don't like Bush, but enough is enough. I for one don't like Obama, but that is left for another day.
Thanks Hollywood,, my dollars will be kept in pocket on this one.
I am a Christian, a conservative, and as tired as anyone of gratuitous slams from the left, but I think that in this particular scene I think the "Bush bashing" being inferred is off the mark. As I interpret the scene, the purpose of the employee pointing to the picture of Pres Bush isn't to slam Bush or to fairly attribute the inefficiency of the office to his leadership, but to deflect criticism of their own performance by saying, "If you want to complain about my work, you'll have to go to DC and take it up with the boss." I don't think the filmmakers had any intention of implying that the bureaucrats in that office were Bush republicans, or that their inefficiency was the result of his lack of leadership. It's more of a typical pass the buck or "Talk to the hand," brushoff from a lazy office worker. Blind Side was a fantastic book and I'm thrilled that someone chose to make this movie, and even after this flap I have every intention of making this the only movie our family will go see this year, and I hope they choose to make many more like it.
Sandra Bullock.made another movie bashing Bush which is why I will not pay to see this movie.
A friend of mine wanted to see it and I said no I am not going to any Sandra Bullock movie.
she could have had that bush bash taken out if she wanted to.
Her best work was with Stallone in Demolition Man.
Transformers 2 had a good shot at Obama.

These are not throwaway lines–it's a pattern of behavior.
For starters, I was not able to successfully follow the link to see what the Bush-bash was about. So, I'll give that a shot at a later time.
But, I am torn: I have wanted to see this movie. I have heard great things about it. And, so far as it affirms good Christian conservative values… we should throw our money behind it.
On the other hand… I am SO SICK of the gratuitous jibes. Can I sit through ONE MOVIE without having to grit my teeth?!?!
For those of you who say… "It's just 15 seconds. We should ignore it, and recognize the movie for what it is: a good movie."… I say…
What if I were a really good guy, but I occasionally used the word "nigger" or "fag" or whatever… in casual conversation. Should the whole world around me just cut me that slack because, hey, I pretty much a decent guy? Don't let that one little blemish ruin my reputation, right?
Or, instead, would the weight of society come crashing down around me because I am a warped creature.
So… I can't decide. Again… I'll check out the offensive clip before casting a final vote.
Eagerly awaiting the New Hollywood.
Thomas doesn't point out that in the movie, the Tim McGraw/Sandra Bullock family is shown to be Christian but it's intimated they harbor some of that sweet, Southern racism and intolerance… this bubbles up when Tim McGraw's character hires a lefty-tutor for their adopted African-American son and remarks to Sandra Bullock's character: "Who ever thought we would have a black son before we knew a Democrat?"
In the movie, it's the family's exposure to the wonderfully open minded lefty tutor and the adopted African-American son that makes them better people. Not their belief in a loving God or in the promise and freedoms of the American Way.
Add that to the blaming of Bush for the kid's slow adoption process and it's hard to make the case that these are not throwaway lines–it's a pattern of behavior.
I can't get the page to load, so i don't know what was said about Bush, but, Sandra Bullock had another movie where she took a shot at Bush 43 and 41 out of the blue, it had nothing to do with the story. I can't remember which movie it was though. And Tim McGraw is a Democrat who has thought about running for Governor of Tennessee, so it's not very surprising.
Will conservatives go see it, or are they more comfortable denouncing “Hollywood”?
With all due respect to Cal I'm more comfortable not spending my money on an industry that seems to take a swipe at Christians/Conservatives/capitalism/Bush in every movie. If Hollywood disappeared tomorrow I wouldn't notice and our society, not to mention the world, would be far better off.
Boy, that really 'screwed the pooch' for me on this one.
Too bad, because I usually like football flicks and I had
considered seeing the film until I heard about this crap.
I'm not a huge Bush fan, but he's far less "racist"
than Jesse Jackson will ever be…and you can take that
to the (failing) bank.
Funny how this kind of film is made to appease the very people attacking it on here. GW Bush, like Clinton, Quayle, Traficant, Palin, etc… is now a punch line – and for a good reason. Learn from your voting mistakes, or be prepared to repeat them.
Mrs. Bullock has enough a$$ for two women
