Christian Toto: ‘The Blind Side’ — Another Bush Sucker Punch?
by Big Hollywood–
Christian Toto:
“The new drama “The Blind Side” tells the story of a homeless black teen who is taken in by a Christian family led by Sandra Bullock.
“It’s a heartwarming story based on the life of NFL lineman Michael Oher.
“So why does the film feel the need to awkwardly squeeze in a slam at former president George W. Bush?”

I WAS SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING GOING TO SEE THIS MOVIE NOW I'M NOT
I believe there was some piece of legislation passed this spring which required at least 75% of new movies to have some derogatory reference to conservatives (or George W Bush) contained somewhere in the script or the scenery.
Or maybe everyone writing for Hollywood knows this is the only way to get your POS script read and bought.
Weak.
There are others who will slam the current admin coming soon, just give it time.
In a way, I agree, but the slams from movies and tv will be because Comrade Obama isn't liberal enough, not because he's leading us toward socialism.
“So why does the film feel the need to awkwardly squeeze in a slam at former president George W. Bush?”
Because, it's who they are. Yet another movie to avoid like the plague.
Well they DID want to get the movie made, didn't they!!??
BDS is the drug of choice here in Hollyweird. Really, start bashing GWB and doors open because suddenly you have something to talk about with anyone else in the biz.
*sigh* I thought that this would finally be a movie that was heartwarming and could be watched without a political point of view being forced down ones throat. I think it's more like 90% of new movies have to take digs at conservatives, "middle Americans" or the Bush administration. The rest just have to star actors who have done so.
Well, I guess it's not racist anymore.
Do not avoid this movie because some screen writer felt the need to put a few liberal zingers in what is actually a good story. The TRUE story will overcome any liberal bias that the screen writers insert. I would suggest you see the movie ten write the Production Company about your feelings on the unnecessary slams. There are too few movies made that are inspired by actual events such as this we need to let this movie succeed if we want to see more of this kind made. I agree the slam is not only unwaranted but also stupid because who do they think the target audience is anyway.
When is the last time you saw a substantive slam on Bill Clinton? Or Jimmy Carter? Or Johnson or JFK..or FDR…or Woodrow Wilson. Don't hold your breath for the Obama critique. It ain't coming.
Seeing as this is a movie about a young black man being taken in and raised by a nice white family, it's understandable that the writers needed to make sure we all knew they weren't racists… because they hate Bush too.
Lefty logic…
Agreed Rich.
Don't let this poison the entire movie. It's still a good movie that liberals HATE.
Read Worldmag.com's review of the movie.
Oh, well, another possible movie night killed. Can't remember the last movie we went to, and we used to go at least twice a month.
I respectful disagree with you that it is a good idea for self-identified Christians who are politically aligned with conservatism should pay to see this movie and then write a strongly-worded letter to the studio and production company voicing our displeasure with the movie's bias against us.
If you pay to see the movie knowing that your voting bloc is mocked and derided, then the studio and production company have no reason to think that mocking and deriding your voting bloc is anything other than a success. They won't have time to read your letter outlining your reasoned criticism of their screenwriters' dialogue choices because they'll be too busy COUNTING THE MONEY THEY MADE FROM YOU.
Boycott HOLLYWEIRD…..stay home and do not buy their DVDs!
You want to see good to great movies?
STAY HOME AND WATCH TCM !
Okay, I watched the trailer twice and I didn't see any slam. What am I missing?
Going to get crushed at the b.o. by The New Moonies regardless…

Let me see…a movie about the true story of a white Christian family adopting an underprivileged black teenager and changing the course of both his life and their lives….and you are trying to turn people off to it for ONE line in the whole movie – an anti-Bush slam which as we all know is now a prerequisite for getting any screenplay greenlighted? Grasping. At. Straws.
Is it really THAT slow a newsday, BH? I would expect better.
I was going over power point notes for a geology test and the liberal old lady professor couldn't resist taking a swipe at Sarah Palin – IN COURSE MATERIAL FOR A TEST AT A MAJOR TEXAS UNIVERSITY!
This crap is everywhere, the bigger a loser Obama is turning out to be the more Bush will brought up as some kind on shield, to save the idiot Messiah.
I had attended my first movie in seven years–ironically, the soccer movie The Damned United–because I had earned money as an extra while I was out of work, and felt I could lift my boycott out of gratitude. I was looking forward to this movie ever since the book came out. There is nothing these evil, wheedling movie creeps can't ruin. Nothing.
Thanks for the info; I almost considered seeing this movie. I won't even watch it on Netflix now.
I second that – "Gilmore Girls" last night in vivid technicolor. WOW! Young Angela landsbury looking stunning and Julie Garland looking lovely in 1946.
I didnt see anything either, i missed it to.
It won't be from Hollywood, that's what I mean.
BH is doing a service by letting us know about this crap so we as consumers can make informed entertainment purchase decisions.
Cutting off the studio's money supply is the only way to turn that greenlight off.
It's not in the trailer. You have to go to the link to read about it.
I don't know…I generally would be inclined to say "screw this flick" for the typical Hollywood bias but I instantly thought back to the opening sceens of "Scarface" (80's version) where pictures of Carter and I think Mondale are hanging prominently in the interview rooms where the newly arrived criminal Cubans are being interrogated.
"Thanks" Jimmah "F–king" Carter for that debacle and the presence of the photos seem to be saying that too.
I love Sandra Bullock because she still maintains her transplanted roots to my beloved Austin as much as she can being Mrs. Jesse James and she is one stunning 40 something lady.
I'll wait to the crowds die down and catch it on the cheap as a matinee.
During "NCIS" last week, two of the characters are shot at by an overly-emotional woman when she mistakes the agents at her door for thugs.
One of the agents screams to the woman: "Hey, who do you think you are… Sarah Palin?"
That show has been sliding downhill for about a year now since Bellisario left. I've taken it out of my DVR's series recording queue before it sinks any lower.
I have to disagree. Perhaps the only way to end this politicalization of every movie that comes down the pike is to simply boycott Hollywood until they get the message. Wait for the DVD if you must pay to watch it.
I guess I just don't consider a one-liner about Bush akin to taking the Lord's name in vain….and I have yet to see John Nolte, a devoted Catholic, tell people to avoid films that do that.
yup. cheap, silly and seemingly out of context. sounds like today's Hollywood.
I miss the "Duke" and Jimmy Stewart and the legions of great stars and as for T.V. I can't even pick out a show I really miss.
Thanks Hollywood, my wife and I are really seeing the savings, not seeing your crappy movies.
I read the link but I think this is a pretty obscure stuff. As others have said on similar issues, bitching about stuff like this just makes us look thin-skinned. What are the odds that an African-American female "civil" servant would hold Bush in a favorable light? I say let it go, support the movie for the overall message it gets across, and move on.
I'm all in favor of boycotting brain-dead actors and directors, but I think this doesn't pass the smell test.
"and you are trying to turn people off to it for ONE line in the whole movie – an anti-Bush slam which as we all know is now a prerequisite for getting any screenplay greenlighted?"
Nonsense. That film also gets made without any Bush-bashing content. At some point, enough is enough, and I was planning on seeing this, but not now.
First of all don't assume this really didn't happen. Remember this is based on a true story. I can totally see a government worker being obnoxious. The worker is technically not lying so she can't be punished while not truly answering the question who her real supervisor is. No one asked the screenwriters if they made it up or if it really happened. And is it really slamming the former president or lazy government workers?
Don't give Hollywood an excuse not to make movies that show Christians as positive characters by letting 15 seconds keep you from seeing it.
WORLD ( a conservative Christian magazine) recently did an article noting how "The Blind Side" affirms, not mocks, conservative Christians:
http://www.worldmag.com/articles/16071
Soon after, WORLD posted a timely commentary by Cal Thomas who addresses the debate over the movie:
http://www.worldmag.com/webextra/16126
The victim thing is getting old. Conservatives have a significant presence in virtually every venue they like to denounce. That includes government (though not this one) and especially the media. Talk radio rules and the rulers are conservatives. Fox News Channel dominates the ratings. The conservative presence in academia lags, but there are universities that do not revise American history and mock religious values. Movies? There are some with solid conservative principles, such as Sandra Bullock’s latest film, The Blind Side. Will conservatives go see it, or are they more comfortable denouncing “Hollywood”? How about reinforcements for those conservatives already “making it” in the mainstream media?
Just something to think about.
If you let one little instance of political insult determine that you will not see this movie then you will doom the rest of us. We want to see more movies made that have the themes that this movie has. The only way more good movies will be made is if people go see them, if you want more of the same old tripe that Hollywood is so good at producing then not going and not supporting this movie will get that result. Go to the link and find out what the slam is and you will find it meaningless.
Fine. I'll do it:
"Don't see movies where the characters use the name of God as a profanity."
I've earned several free movie passes over the years from our grocery store's rewards card. At least 90% of the time I've ended up giving them away b/c there was aboslutely nothing at the multiplex that I cared to see.
Sandra Bullock is not attractive enough to be a movie star.
I don't fathom those people who bash Bush the way they do. As I recall, it was Bush who warned the people of New Orleans to evacuate the city two days before Hurricane Katrina struck. And it was Bush who responded to the murderers of 9-11-2001 by taking out the Taliban in Afghanistan and Sadam Hussein in Iraq. After a year of Obamatons and Pelosibots running the country, I'm really missing the man. 2010 and 2012 can't come soon enough. And about that movie, I'd rather pour Tobasco sauce in my eyes than watch it.
Die Hollywood Die!
Please die before you begin making a decade worth of 'Dear Hunter' anti-Afghanistan war movies blaming GWB after your evil President Hollywood gives up and loses the Islamic Jihadist war against the West.
Die Hollywood Die, your empire is evil.
And another thing; your Steven Spielbergs of the Hollywood world would delight in the destruction of Israel just for their own movie material.
I HATE HOLLYWOOD!
So then, you do consider a Bush joke the same as taking the Lord's name in vain?

/>Politics and morality are inseparable. And as morality's foundation is religion, religion and politics are necessarily related. We need religion as a guide. We need it because we are imperfect, and our government needs the church, because only those humble enough to admit they're sinners can bring to democracy the tolerance it requires in order to survive. ~ Ronald Reagan

A state office probably would have a picture of the governor, not the president.
When I read the linked article and it referred to the bemused government employee pointing to President Bush, she does not seem like the kind of character whose opinion of Bush would matter, or would ever vote for him. It is not like the family that takes in Michael is bashing Bush, it's the govt. worker with the careless attitude bashing Bush. I still plan to see this movie.
RE: Oliver Stone's "Scarface"
When Tony Montana is interrogated by the three tough-talking immigration officers over his life in Cuba, the images of Carter and Mondale are there to show two things:
1) The movie was released in 1983 and having the images of Carter/Mondale establishes the timeframe for Montana's arrival in America
2) Showing Carter/Mondale in the background of the shots with the immigration officers that are hesitant to allow Montana in because of his background establishes that America (particularly America's government under the Carter Administration) values law and order, while Montana and his best friend represent an unwanted violent criminal element in society
Oliver Stone planned every scene and set piece in "Scarface" with these intentions… just as the writers and director of "The Blind Side" planned the Dubya cheap shot in their movie.
I read about this film in an ad over at The Corner yesterday, and I thought, "No way. They won't be able to play this story straight."
I hate having good instincts sometimes.
No big deal, just another movie I won't see.
Do you consider your notion that Christian conservatives in America that voted overwhelmingly for George W. Bush in two elections should pay to see a movie with a cheap shot at George W. Bush as a smart monetary investment in a recession just because the movie is being marketed as a feel-good holiday movie with Christian overtones?
You're painting Christian audiences with a stupid brush.
Bette Davis wasn't "pretty", nor were a multitude of other men and women who made acting a career precisely because they knew character development requires more than a glance at the exterior of a body.
If this is a true story from recent times, then having a picture of Bush hanging in a government office is not a slam, it is an attempt at realism. Government offices have pictures of the sitting president up on their wall. Deal with it. If the character playing the government worker makes some sort of gesture to imply it's Bush's fault, that's par for the course…maybe they didn't vote for Bush (hmm, black female government worker…what are the odds?) You'd probably have a similar response to a picture of Obama today.
Believe me, I'm all for boycotting true overt insults toward Middle America, Christians, tea partiers, etc. I just think this one isn't worth the fuss. It makes conservatives look petty.
oh ya, I understand the imagery in "Scarface". F. Murray Abraham grew up in El Paso and has many relatives here. My Dad was visiting a friend of his at her flower shop in the 80's and in come F. Murray. His cousin asked him what he was up to career wise and spoke quite candidly (according to my Dad) about hating his role in "Scarface" but it was a job. Of course 'Amadeus' was right around the corner for him.
Not a chance. I've been going to the movies for 70 years and have never seen a even a modest criticism of anything leftwing.
Another actor not to watch! When will they just shut up and undersatnd it is THEY who are in the minority!
Aren't the real people portrayed in this movie Conservatives, I don't take it as a slam to GWB, it is a picture of him because he was in office at the time and prolly because most government offices have a pic of the current Pres
Um. I'm pretty sure Sandra Bullock didn't write the screenplay or direct the film. No need to hold this against her. And on a scale of 1 to 100, this one isn't even double digits.
If the book is the real story, then it makes more sense to just read the book… especially since Hollywood movie adaptions are notorious for changing the events, characters, and themes in popular novels to fit their political agenda (see "Starship Troopers" "The Scarlet Letter" just about anything from Michael Chricton that he didn't direct himself).
“So why does the film feel the need to awkwardly squeeze in a slam at former president George W. Bush?”
Because he is automatically funny as a symbol of incompetence.
Oh?
I'm still waiting for Hollywood to slam the Clinton and Carter administrations.
Again, I respectfully disagree. Movies are made through months (and sometimes years) of meticulous planning; therefore this cheap shot against the millions of people that voted for George W. Bush in two national elections was not some meaningless ad lib from an actor wanting some extra screen time with Sandra Bullock.
The only way more good movies will be made is if the stranglehold of leftist groupthink is broken in Hollywood. There are only two ways that will happen:
1) Artists with libertarian/conservative political views flood the entertainment talent pool
2) Consumers choke off the money supply for leftist dominated entertainment
The second option is (unfortuntely) much more likely than the first. That's exactly why people who don't want " more of the same old tripe that Hollywood is so good at producing" should not pay to see this movie.
This movie *is* the tripe.
Hollywood truly appriciates your spin and money.
You should buy a Powerball ticket!
Hollywood truly appreciates your spin and money.
Actually, Sandra Bullock was impressed that Leigh Anne Tuohy (whom she plays in the film) and her family were Christian in action and not just words:
"One of my biggest issues has always been people who use their faith and their religion as a banner but don't do the right things, yet still go, 'I'm a good Christian and I go to church and this is the way you should live your life. And I'm like, you know, do not give me a lecture about how to live my life when you go to church every week but I know you are still sneaking around on your wife. And I told Leigh Anne in a live interview, one of my largest concerns getting involved with this project was that whole banner-waving thing because it scares me, and I've had experiences that haven't been great with people like that. I don't buy a lot of people who use that banner as their shield. But she was so open and honest and forthright with me I thought, wow, I've finally met someone who practices but doesn't preach."

Respected conservative commentator Cal Thomas said it best:

Frankly, this throwaway line in the movie sounds like a molehill being turned into a mountain.

Frankly, this debate over a throwaway line in the movie sounds like a molehill being turned into a mountain.
Brahahahahah the hits just keep on coming. The Hollyweird industry just keeps shooting itself in the foot everyday. Well she did marry that loser Jesse James who dumped his first wife and kid after his head got swollen after the TV show about his choppers. Obviously her judgment skills are lacking. Yeah Sandra he married you because he loves you. Your money had nothing to do with it Brahahahah.
I agree. It's heartwarming.
Actually, it's a molehill being turned into a mountain range!
I agree. This sounds like a pretty weak dis.
She's better lookin that Babs Streisand but then again, so is my beegle dog's ass
Cal Thomas' argument is ridiculous because AM talk radio (whose listeners skew overwhelmingly male and over 40) has a majority of politically conservative voices does not equate to conservative media dominance or even a significant conservative media presence. Just because we're Christians doesn't mean we have to shamble to the cinema like zombies just because Sandra Bullock is wearing a crucifix in her latest movie.
It should be noted that in the movie, the characters played by Bullock and Tim McGraw are shown as borderline racists with a hatred for those sweet, open minded liberals (McGraw's character even says to Bullock's at one point: "Who'd ever thought we'd have a black son before we knew a Democrat?").
Thomas is wrong and this is not some wonderfully conservative Christian feel good movie. Toto has exposed it as more of the same from Hollwood.
In the movie, the Tim McGraw/Sandra Bullock family is shown to be Christian but it's intimated they harbor some of that sweet, Southern racism and intolerance… this bubbles up when Tim McGraw's character hires a lefty-tutor for their adopted African-American son and remarks to Sandra Bullock's character: "Who ever thought we would have a black son before we knew a Democrat?"
In the movie, it's the family's exposure to the wonderfully open minded lefty tutor and the adopted African-American son that makes them better people. Not their belief in a loving God or in the promise and freedoms of the American Way.
Forget the movie. Read the book – it was politics-free.
The liberals have the tendency to get sclerotic very early, at about 14-16 years old, and their memories and emotions became iron-cast in that age's state of mind – this is the explanation of having in 2009 jokes with W, jokes which are anyway some inside jokes since no one outside of small circle can understand them.
Just a couple of weeks ago someone took me to the LA art thing, downtown LA, and we entered an art show – and guess what! There they were, some Bush cartoons, humorless, pointless and tragicomically anachronistic – and the gallery lady was there, laughing, another tragicomic act, poor her, and pointing out to that and that … now this is soooooo funnny! Now look here! Now look at this!
It was very embarrassing -
And you forgot the mandate that all Blacks be portrayed as some sort of misunderstood angels.
First we had Sandra BS in the White-hating movie "A Time to Kill" (itself a sequel to the White-hating book "To Kill a Mockingbird.) and now another anti-White production. How many Whites will be victimized because they get the impression Blacks are to be trusted? You can open up a newspaper and see one just about every day. And they will NEVER make a movie about the White victims like those attacked by the Carr brothers or Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom.
Great point Brandon, totally agree. And, if the Bush bashing wasn't bad enough, after watching the trailer, Sandra Bullock's character is a turnoff. I wouldn't have wanted to see this movie based on that.
No one told anyone to avoid this film. He just asked a question about the gratuitous Bush remark.
What amazes me most is that anyone who considers themselves to be a conservative or republican is still defending GWB. Not only was he an incompetent and disastrous president – he was a disaster for conservatism and the republican party. I know many of you voted for him, but If a progressive like myself can recognize and acknowledge that many of the things that were said about Clinton were proven true – why are you unwilling to do the same when it comes to Bush?
Nope. Won't pay to see it. They don't want my money.
I just talked to my daughters about changing our plans on seeing this movie over Thanksgiving weekend. We decided our dollars will be better spent doing something worthy. I for one at tired of Hollywood shrewish behavior against Republicans. I for one don't like Bush, but enough is enough. I for one don't like Obama, but that is left for another day.
Thanks Hollywood,, my dollars will be kept in pocket on this one.
I am a Christian, a conservative, and as tired as anyone of gratuitous slams from the left, but I think that in this particular scene I think the "Bush bashing" being inferred is off the mark. As I interpret the scene, the purpose of the employee pointing to the picture of Pres Bush isn't to slam Bush or to fairly attribute the inefficiency of the office to his leadership, but to deflect criticism of their own performance by saying, "If you want to complain about my work, you'll have to go to DC and take it up with the boss." I don't think the filmmakers had any intention of implying that the bureaucrats in that office were Bush republicans, or that their inefficiency was the result of his lack of leadership. It's more of a typical pass the buck or "Talk to the hand," brushoff from a lazy office worker. Blind Side was a fantastic book and I'm thrilled that someone chose to make this movie, and even after this flap I have every intention of making this the only movie our family will go see this year, and I hope they choose to make many more like it.
Sandra Bullock.made another movie bashing Bush which is why I will not pay to see this movie.
A friend of mine wanted to see it and I said no I am not going to any Sandra Bullock movie.
she could have had that bush bash taken out if she wanted to.
Her best work was with Stallone in Demolition Man.
Transformers 2 had a good shot at Obama.

These are not throwaway lines–it's a pattern of behavior.
For starters, I was not able to successfully follow the link to see what the Bush-bash was about. So, I'll give that a shot at a later time.
But, I am torn: I have wanted to see this movie. I have heard great things about it. And, so far as it affirms good Christian conservative values… we should throw our money behind it.
On the other hand… I am SO SICK of the gratuitous jibes. Can I sit through ONE MOVIE without having to grit my teeth?!?!
For those of you who say… "It's just 15 seconds. We should ignore it, and recognize the movie for what it is: a good movie."… I say…
What if I were a really good guy, but I occasionally used the word "nigger" or "fag" or whatever… in casual conversation. Should the whole world around me just cut me that slack because, hey, I pretty much a decent guy? Don't let that one little blemish ruin my reputation, right?
Or, instead, would the weight of society come crashing down around me because I am a warped creature.
So… I can't decide. Again… I'll check out the offensive clip before casting a final vote.
Eagerly awaiting the New Hollywood.
Thomas doesn't point out that in the movie, the Tim McGraw/Sandra Bullock family is shown to be Christian but it's intimated they harbor some of that sweet, Southern racism and intolerance… this bubbles up when Tim McGraw's character hires a lefty-tutor for their adopted African-American son and remarks to Sandra Bullock's character: "Who ever thought we would have a black son before we knew a Democrat?"
In the movie, it's the family's exposure to the wonderfully open minded lefty tutor and the adopted African-American son that makes them better people. Not their belief in a loving God or in the promise and freedoms of the American Way.
Add that to the blaming of Bush for the kid's slow adoption process and it's hard to make the case that these are not throwaway lines–it's a pattern of behavior.
I can't get the page to load, so i don't know what was said about Bush, but, Sandra Bullock had another movie where she took a shot at Bush 43 and 41 out of the blue, it had nothing to do with the story. I can't remember which movie it was though. And Tim McGraw is a Democrat who has thought about running for Governor of Tennessee, so it's not very surprising.
Will conservatives go see it, or are they more comfortable denouncing “Hollywood”?
With all due respect to Cal I'm more comfortable not spending my money on an industry that seems to take a swipe at Christians/Conservatives/capitalism/Bush in every movie. If Hollywood disappeared tomorrow I wouldn't notice and our society, not to mention the world, would be far better off.
Boy, that really 'screwed the pooch' for me on this one.
Too bad, because I usually like football flicks and I had
considered seeing the film until I heard about this crap.
I'm not a huge Bush fan, but he's far less "racist"
than Jesse Jackson will ever be…and you can take that
to the (failing) bank.
Funny how this kind of film is made to appease the very people attacking it on here. GW Bush, like Clinton, Quayle, Traficant, Palin, etc… is now a punch line – and for a good reason. Learn from your voting mistakes, or be prepared to repeat them.
Mrs. Bullock has enough a$$ for two women
/Hahahahaha
It will come from me if I can get the funding, I need conservatives to put up the money. http://www.forgottenheroesthemovie.com

I like to read this article, but can't get to Toto's site lately.
I have read the book three times and there is nothing in it of the sort. This was the screenwriter or the director. I have been waiting to see the movie for months. I have cried at the trailer. Now I won't go.
Okay, I've watched this trailer twice and I haven't caught the Bush comment yet. Somebody give me the time marker so I can hear it….I can't believe I'm missing it since everyone else seems to be catching it!
That'll be interesting on McGraw since he owns a ranch in Louisiana and grew up there.
Made to appease? Give your head a shake. It was made to make a profit and they thought to do it with a supposed family values movie rather than another bit of tanking uber liberal self gratification is all. If they decided after the fact to allow a little conservative slighting to make their "stars" happy, its their fiscal funeral and no one should feel obligated to go. Its up to the studios to put out a good marketable product people will be wiling to shell out for. Its bad enough with the current incarnation of POTUS and his "random cute kids in the audience speak out" bits of theater. No need to include politics in your movies "made to appease" conservative Americans too.
Like someone on Toto's site says — this story is about conservative Christians, so the writer probably felt he had to throw that joke in just to reassure his readers that he wasn't one of Those People.
Good call. The lack of $$$ in the coffers speaks a language even the most liberal Hollywood directors heed.
After you. So what about Clinton's direct hand in bankrupting a great chunk of America?
If this is what it takes to get a good movie out, so be it. My guess George himself doesn't mind. He never seemed to mine it during his time at the White House.
My god…some of you people are such massive crybabies. Don't avoid the movie simply because of a very subtle jab at Bush that lasts for 3 seconds.
Also, I don't understand why conservatives defend Bush so much. He wasn't a good president and he helped turn conservatism into a 4-letter word in the minds of the pop culture.
It is still a heart warming story, and at least the Hollywood Trash was married to someone her own age in this movie.
http://livingfortruth.wordpress.com/2009/10/24/qu...
Amen
First off, conservatism has been a four-letter word in pop culture for years, if not decades (the left has never forgiven, and will never forgive Ronald Reagan for winning the Cold War).
Second, you're absolutely right about the bellyaching. The entire point of this site, as I recall, is to encourage conservatives to engage pop culture, not retreat from it. (And to those who insist that boycotting this movie is a form of engagement, how exactly is it different from a retreat?)
Er — wasn't this movie based on a true story? I'm pretty sure Bush was president during the time period portrayed in the movie. Any generic "president joke" set during this time is going to be Bush, not Obama.
I understand everybody's nerves are raw after 9 years of Bush Derangement Syndrome, but let's not overreact to every little thing, eh? I mean, come on, this isn't Daily Kos or the Huffington Post.
Damnit Jim! First it was Christmas Carol capitalism bashing..and now Bush bashing (again)..sigh..this is why I stay home and watch Supernatural and The Office. I refuse to waste my money on liberal Hollywood's hateful addiction to bashing who and what I believe in. Don't fall for "its just a minor scene" bit…I'm sure there were a lot of other worthy scenes that ended up on the cutting room floor to make room for this obsessive Bush bash moment.
My conservative parents saw this tonight at a free screening. They both really like it.
*shrugs*
You're right on the first point..the left hates the fact that Reagan was right about getting the Soviets to "tear down" the wall. Your wrong though about the point of this site. As I see it, it's to give voice to the conservatives in Hollywood brave enough to come out of the woodwork and really tell us what they think…and to give us hope that there are still great values within the Hollywood framework. It also gives notice to those filmmakers who Im sure troll the site that hey, you've insulted middle-America far too long with your constant jabs at what and who we believe in..so when you insist on using gratuitus bashing, we'll just refuse to go to your movies or watch your TV shows. That's not retreating, that's standing up for what you believe in.
Will you PLEASE quit copying and pasting, and linking, we all know that you can do it, and also you got your point across!!
I hope you responded with a swipe at Obama.
Ridiculous. Engaging in pop culture is not 'going to see a movie.' DUH!
You don't seem to get it. The INCESSANT NEED for liberals to inject their politics into everything (no matter how disconnected to the product) is the problem.
You act like not going to see a movie is some incredible sacrifice. It's not a sacrifice at all for me. I rarely go to the movies because I couldn't be more sick of leftist Hollywood and I don't miss it because there's no shortage of other things to do.
I actually was going to go see this movie because it was an uplifting true story. Now I'm not. I AM that stubborn. It's not like my not going is going to undo the story. It's reality. It happened and whether or not I see the movie is meaningless except for money in the pocket of people who are unrelated to the actual story.
I'm with you. Whether or not it is 'seen' on screen is not what's important. The beauty is that it's an inspirational true story. Not seeing it won't undo that, but it will keep a few bucks out of the pocket of people who had nothing to do with the 'real thing' but are just profiting from it.
This movie wasn't made to appease anyone. It was made to profit from an inspirational true story (of course, one the profiteers had nothing to do with).
I've never seen a picture of the president at any local/state government office.
I remember in one of the early postings here on BH where the writer talked about being in a meeting with Hollywood types and everyone laughed when it was brought up that a picture of Cheney was snuck into some scene for a gratuitous slam.
Yeah, so incompetent the dems' "best" and "brightest" couldn't beat him in an election…
Agreed. Sandra Bullock is an actress that audiences love. Hollywood doesn't put her in roles where the audience is supposed to hate her. In this movie, she is a playing a white, Christian Southerner. That means Hollywood made a movie where the white Christian Southerner is a good person.
So, rather than whine about yet another dumb Bush joke, I think we should appreciate what we have here.
The only way to get Hollywood to stop insulting us is to make it a rule: If they can't refrain from showing contempt for us, we can certainly refrain from paying them to do it.
It has not been painful to give up George Clooney movies. I don't miss Julia Roberts. Oliver Stone does not leave a hole in my life. If Hollywood can't learn to respect half their potential audience, they can go broke.
If I'm halfway through a novel and there's a gratuitous slam at Ronald Reagan, I toss the book and start a new one. The author goes into my junk file. The world is full of good books by people who don't insult me.
How many individual decisions will it take to have an impact? Who knows. We don't hold boycotts or sit-ins or protest marches. Their books and movies will just bomb.
That will never happen because conservatives by- an -large are kind not hurtful people. The liberals are vicious vendetta loving people. O bama is their God so they are blinded.
This story happened in my hometown. I had no idea until they had the woman that Sandra Bullock played on the radio. Shows how much I pay attention to that kind of stuff. Bush bashing aside, that kid was pretty lucky to end up with that family and going to a private school in Memphis. Memphis city schools are some of the worst in the nation thanks to liberals!
Uh, actually I already went first(did you even read my post?)… the ball is your court now! And you are going to have to be a little more specific. To repeat my point(!), why are so many conservatives unwilling to admit that many of the criticisms of GWB turned out to be true? I willingly acknowledge the validity of many of the claims made against Clinton. That was my question. If I can see that the Clintons were detrimental to my cause – what is wrong with a similar admission of "buyer's remorse" from those who previously supported Bush?
Lyle has it right. The only way to stop the endless conservative trashing by Hollywood is to scrupulously avoid movies that do the trashing. Some here seem to think it's no big deal but the relentless attacks from the Left, small and large, erode the repute of the Right.
I don't think that's a slam against Bush. I really think it's a stretch to see it as such. Sure, a government line is long, like you said. Having Bush's face up on the screen means that what this woman did, she did while Bush was president. He didn't destroy charity, like the liberals would have you believe. He perhaps even encouraged this kind of behavior.
Bush had very little to do with conservatism. I grant he wasn't very good for the Republican party. I have no idea how you judge competent, or what constitutes disastrous.
There are more self defined conservatives than there are Democrats, Republicans, or liberals.
Hey – we don't have to agree – at least you're addressing my point. Although I am curious why you don't see him as having "little to do with conservatism", other than his willingness to spend our money freely – in his case, things I found short sighted i.e. – Iraq(even his father knew that dislodging Saddam- a-hole that he was- would create a power vacuum), or tax cuts(favoring the well-off) at a time he wanted to fight two wars that he knew were going to be very expensive. My idea of incompetent / disastrous involves those two – and how they would cause problems – not only for our country – but also his own political party. If I was a pure partisan, I would have wanted him to "dig his hole deeper" – but there is way more at stake, and too many of us(of either party affiliation) are experiencing the outcome of his poor decisions.
I was sorry to hear this. My wife and I had looked forward to seeing this movie in the theater. Now we'll wait for it on non-premium cable.
Then you need to see Team America — World Police
Yes, it's a good story, but you can get the story without the movie.
Ditto!
This story is my hometown. My son went to that school and we live in the liberal world of Memphis TN.. I don't know what the comment is about Bush, but this is one city that consistently reelects criminals, has its own political crime family, has a 2 government system of the city, where Michael is from and the county where the nice white family is from. There is no secret where the political line is drawn. Racism is alive and well here, sadly, but this story is all true and is a testament to the generosity of a nice Conservative family. The liberals will hate it because some government program that is corrupt and full of grant money was supposed to do for Michael what this one family generously did.
Now, I'm curious to see if this is true.
That's the irony of these protests. The hubbub will cause MORE people (liberal, conservative, whatever) to check out "Blind Side" to see what all the fuss is about.
Wait a minute. I'm confused. Don't republicans like to starve and now kill children?
Assuming it really happened, aren't adoptions and other matters of family law normally handled at the state or county level, not the federal? Why would a state/county employee identify President Bush as her boss, rather than the governor or county executive? Throwing the "bullshit" flag on this one.
In all fairness, the "Blind Side is Christian-bashing because of a Bush joke" is pretty repetitive in this thread.
Besides, my chats with Tea Partiers at the 912 March made me realize that there are conservatives who think Bush was TOO liberal when it came to illegal immigration and fiscal issues. So, said conservatives would get a chuckle out of the joke in "The Blind Side."
Exactly! They didn't market that movie to reflect that!…Also some of the scenes (puppet sex) were disgusting (what else from Trey and Matt)…but other than that it was extremely clever.
Conservatives know exactly what Bush did wrong (stupid war, "name your" bailout, idiotic drug gimme) and have been openly vocal of such on sites such as Wake up America and Foxforum if you'd care to read them. There's at the very most an identical amount of Democrats posting on the Clintons but I've yet to read one single Democrat blog willing to point a finger directly at Barney Frank or Bill Clinton and their staggering contribution to America seeing a tenth of its total wealth vaporized? I've never seen them handed the responsibility for millions of Americans ending up losing everything save for the clothing on their backs or the millions of seniors forced back into the labor pool. If you could point me to one, I'd appreciate it but please no citing Huffing with Arianna as some sort of neutral ground.
Its the first tenant of conservatism, "Conservation: The act or process of conserving." and whizzing away monies better put against America's mind numbing debt flies in the face of conservatism. Bush picked being a few pages instead of a footnote in a history book and chucked all the principles he was supposed to hold dear just to accomplish this. Any conservative already knows this to be true but also doesn't need to hear it said over and over as some kind of rolling excuse for failing to recognize the narcissism in continuing to spend away America's future wealth for today's gratification completely oblivious to those children to whom the future belongs.
Huffing with Arianna: The Movie… now there's something guaranteed to tank at the box office.
I think we're missing something here, while I feel as most do about another dig at President Bush, the real story here should be that Christians are portrayed positively in a major motion picture. We are not mocked, made to look like racists, or portrayed as dumb rednecks, which is the whole point. I plan on seeing the movie, but each Conservative Christian will have to make that decision for themselves, just remember it's a film showing Christians to be compassionate, caring, tough and fair, in otherwords, everything we are for real or should be trying to be.
OK guys, come on. First off, I didn't agree with everything GW did so lets not can the whole movie just because of an opinionated moment. That being said. I took it to be more of a testament to the inept worker behind the counter. She had no answer for the problem so she did what every liberal does, she reached back to her photo of George to blame everything on him. I think intelligent people who view the film will have the brains to realize that George Bush wasn't running their office and it's rediculous to blame him.
On a side note, (if this was an actual event), if the moron desk clerk who did that is reading this, the policies in place to cause your office's ineptitude, were around quite a while before George Bush.
Thank you for pointing out this review. You are perfectly right. Liberals don't want a story about redemption. They only want stories about victimization and hopelessness. I am a conservative and I WILL pay to see this movie in the theater.
You know what's really sad, even though George made a lot of mistakes, he was still a better candidate than Kerry or Gore. I'd still vote for him over Obama.
Ugh, this is exactly what liberals want! They want to hijack every aspect of culture. This is a TRUE story of redemption. A perfect example of conservative values in ACTION. We can't fall prey to their games. We must support stories like this in order to create a counter culture – a culture that opposes reliance on the government for salvation. So they take a jab at Bush. SO WHAT!?! That does not take away from the truths of the story – truths that must be told to save our society .
Rich, correct me if I'm wrong, but there's a book on this, right?
One without the ridiculous zingers, that were unnecessary.
In that case, buy the book, avoid the movie…. You're supporting the story and Michael without giving the production company one dime. (and this from someone who's in WUV with Ms. Bullock)
ANOTHER PILE OF DOG SQUEEZE that I'll avoid.

The Anti Liberal Zone
So you're going to let a few lines deter you from seeing a truly positive and true story on the big screen?
As a dyed in the wool conservative I ask you doesn't that sound a bit silly?
My views are strong enough to ignore a little criticism when the rest of the movie is good.
I think you're right.
My husband and I were actually referred to as "those people" at a small dinner party last year. (A woman found out we were conservatives.) We played to the comment like we were outed as vampires or something.
True. The Dems' election strategy was the shits. It still doesn't indicate that Bush did anything right. As evidence there's a black guy in the White House with the middle name "Hussein".
They're no good for eating if they're starved; don't you know anything?
Better yet- get a pirated copy of the DVD.
I wouldn't worry too much about that because it too was written by a conservative. Not saying the movie and those who make it are conservative, but just mentioning the context.
I also was planning to see this movie. The cheap shot described in the post is the very reason I stopped going to movies long ago. I'll read the book instead.
OK, who's giving you thumbs down for this comment? I upped you one.
The Harvey Girls?
Oh goodness, that's where the line comes from, someone we'd EXPECT to be anti-Bush? Sounds like good writing to me.
I warned about this in the last post that talked about this movie, and almost no one listened (I did get one positive comment). Hollywood, no matter how good the movie is, should be boycotted. I refuse to pay more than a dollar rental fee if anything for the current crop of crass liberalism. There really ought to be a blog dedicated to Boycott Hollyweird to start a movement.
This is a movie i will be watching, an trust me there isnt many of those.
And Nazis, don't forget Nazis. They have to be the villains even when it's obvious that the book a movie was based on had Islamofascists or Commies as the villains.
Being sick and tired of trash statements in movies about people who vote like me, drives me to never help with a pay day to any of the stars. It was well said above, you can get the story without the movie. I don't care what this actress is doing, she is not relevant to my life – no money for you!
"There are others who will slam the current admin coming soon, just give it time".
As John Wayne says, "That'll be the day".
I'm not going to hold my breath.
Skip the movie and write the letter anyway, telling the production company why you chose not to give them your money. Boycotts are useless if producers don't know why they're losing money.
YES! LOL…thanks, mind was elsewhere…gone.
I'm as bad as it gets when boycotting hollywood. Did Sandra Bullock ever say anything political in her real life? If so I must have missed it. I thought she was pretty silent politically. I might be wrong though. So my take after reading the comments is some government worker made the Bush remark. I'm gonna watch this movie unless I see or hear something the actors in it said something in public that bashes conservatives. Lord knows there are very few movies I can even begin to consider watching.
Ok, i'm fairly conservative and quite sympathetic re: the way all things not-left wing are represented and trashed by Hollywood, but this is hardly a "gratuitous" pot-shot at Bush. Before anyone here went into their cry-baby session, did anyone consider the fact that the reason why Bush's picture was on the wall in this government facility was it was trying to be historically accurate?!? A federal facility will have a picture of the president posted somewhere prominent. The film is based on a book published in 2006. Do the math.
Actually I got her better than that. On a raised stage she started in on "Bush not signing the Kyoto Protocol so we're all going to die" rant so endemic to academics and I raised my hand and stopped her. I reminded her and the class LOUDLY but pleasantly that Clinton didn't sign it because even our stupid Senate KNEW it was crap and defeated a motion for ratification 95-0. Because there was no Senate ratification and NO CHANCE of ratification Bush COULDN'T sign it he even wanted to. Then a kid adsked "Why don't China and India have to sign up?" and she was actually taken back that the kiddies wern't slurppinh up the liberal propaganda and really pounded her on China and India. It was really funny.
Movies should rise above such nonsensensical, pointless slams — regardless of the producers' politcal slants. To take a cheap shot like this at Bush is to give the Red Staters the finger.
Vote with your feet people — and your dollars.
I wonder if most of the people reacting on the board actually clicked on the link and read the description of the "Bush jab." If it is a jab at Bush, it's not blatant. The lady could have pointed to that picture no matter who was president. It sounds like she's basically saying it's not my job. If I want to read a political motivation into the scene, I could just as easily come away with a jab at government beuracracy, which is conservative friendly.
I understand the sensitivity given the constant drumbeat of Bush bashing for the last 8 years, but it sounds like a very small problem to avoid a movie you would otherwise want to go see.
Also, if there is a question about the intent of this scene, shouldn't the overall context inform our interpretation?
Sandra Bullock seems pretty apolitical career wise, and she costars with Tim McGraw. It's not like this is an Oliver Stone production starring Sean Penn as a world weary journalist who saves a young homeless homosexual from a repressive religious society. (Don't worry, that one's coming to a theater near you soon!)
You simply don't understand the power of the subconscious message. It's more powerful when it's subtle and wrapped in a sweet package.
We don't NEED movies good or bad.
I find very little liberals put out as entertainment (TV and Movies) to be worth my time and money.
I'll do the same, and take my $10 or $12 and go to the book store.
Thank you ScottMcC for a more accurate review of the movie. Hey, Big Hollywood …maybe you should hire Scott to do these articles….this is not a pro-christian movie but another pro-liberal one and a very clever way of trashing traditional Americans.
That's what I was talking about. Coming from others.
Bush wasn't a conservative. That's why I find it funny when conservatives defend him like he's the spawn of Reagan and Goldwater. My theory is that the Right hates the Left so much that they will defend and support anybody who the Left mocks (in this case, George W. Bush). It's juvenile. I suppose the same thing happens on the Left as well but it doesn't make it right. It's basically the political equivalent of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend". This is also apparent in the case of that dumb box of rocks, Carrie Prejean. Most people here would secretely admit that she's a waste of space (at least any body with standards would) but in front of a liberal, you would put her on a pedestal and reinforce her position as a gay-hating martyr.
I don't play for Team Republican or Team Democrat. I'm not brand royal, like I'm sure most of you are. I don't play the "lesser of two evils" game. If somebody is an incompetant big government hack(Bush…Obama…take your pick), they're not getting my vote or my moral support, period.
The MSM spent eight + years sabotaging Bush. Conversely, they did all they could to see Obama elected. The fact that our current president has the middle name of "Hussein" is only "evidence" that the MSM has substantial sway in elections, and that the American electorate has far too many idiots like you.
Relatively, the jab at Bush isn't so bad. Everyone should see a the movie just because it's the only film that depicts conservative christians in a positive light. Tell me of anything else out of Hollywood that does that…EVER.
Here's my online review of the movie:
http://www.abc4.com/content/moviereviews/story/Re...
+1
Reminds me of Law and Order which I "used" to Tivo. I refuse to support shows that bombard me with political messages!!!
There's some REAL hope!
I often pondered how the people in the "media" could behave in so biased a fashion, giving Obama so many passes on so many juicy news items.
Now I understand.
She's Sandra Bullock. Sandra Bullock can say anything about anything anytime and I'm OK with it.
She has movie star charisma though.
I thought Islamofascists, Communists, Nazis and any minority villians were all replaced with Fundamentalist Christians and/or White Supremacists. You know, just like in Law and Order shows.
Sorry that Sandra B. had to stoop to the Bushing Bashing Level to get her 'One of the Cool Liberal Kids' ticket punched. Maybe I'll see the film at a ,matinee, or wait until it hits TV. Probably, the latter. I liked SB in 'The Net' , 'While You Were Sleeping', and 'The Lake House'. Not earth shattering or ground breaking movies, but pleasant diversions nonetheless.
Oh, come on, people! Are we really that thin-skinned? This looks like a genuinely good message here with conservative principles attached and you're just gonna boycott it? I don't even think Breitbart would agree with that.
JUDY Garland, THE HARVEY GIRLS, but yes, that's a wonderful movie.
TCM shows marvelous movies…………….movies well worth seeing and unlike today's movies and actors and actresses, well worth the time watching them.
You know I can agree with most conservatives on very legit disagreement with Bush on immigration, and other spending issues you brought up as well. It's just I have Bush Bash fatigue.
The MSM spent eight + years sabotaging Bush.
It's fun to pretend, but with two ongoing wars, an economy in a shambles and New Orleans still drying out you've gotta wake up and smell the coffee.

*coughpiratebaycough*
Man, I have GOT to wake up, then spew. Where in the HELL did I get Julie? Sheeesh!
I totally agree with you. It is like the people on BH who kept saying that people who didn't see Michael Moores movies could say anything bad about them unless they forked over their hard earned money to see what it was they were talking bad about. Most of us know enough about him and most hollywood libs to know we don't want to give them our hard earned money just so they can point their grubby fingers in our faces and tell us how much we suck. I not only vote agasint them at the ballot box but I vote against them with my wallet because I refuse to give them money to keep producing the tripe they pass off as movies. Until they learn to keep their political opinions to themselves I will not spend on red cent on their garbage.
Again I agree with you. You do not reward negitive behavior with positive feedback. You don't house break a dog by rewarding it for peeing on the rug. You also don't reward liberals by paying them for insulting you and putting down your way of life. You have to draw a line in the sand that you then show them they can not cross and if they do you will punish them. The only way you punish money loving libtards is by not giveing them your money.
I watched this moving today and did not see the scene as a slam to President Bush….But did love the line where Kathy Bates reveals her deep dark secret…she's a democrat
I second that. Tired of seeing liberals taking shots for no reason. This is just another racist movie for liberals and people that dont recognize the liberal ways.
Who wants to see this type of movie. Be good in your life, treat people as equals and don't fall for indoctrination.
I missed it the first time, and had to look hard the second time after reading the full article. If that's the "dig" at Bush then, we're looking too hard… And I'm a die-hard Bush defender.
It doesn't matter if Bush was a real conservative or not what matters is Hollywood thinks its FUNNY to slam Bush, any republican, christians etc.
So If I know its in a movie I will not go, they can laugh without my money. I am sick of the Rich Snobs of Hollywood and New York.
I love Bill Clinton. I think we should make him king. I'm talking the red robe, the turkey leg – everything Tim McGraw.
Blind Side was amazing! see it for yourself before you judge
Fortunately, my decision-making is not dictated by Breitbart, though I appreciate his work. I'm just sick of gratuitous shots at Bush. The makers of the movie and its stars have seen the last of my money. At some point, I know I'll just be reading books, and that's okay, too. Maybe one of them will try reading, as well…..unintended consequences on the plus side!
[...] the other movies out there. They say The Blind Side is “inspirational,” the occasional Bush crack aside. I’m rarely “inspired” by modern Hollywood fare. I’m frequently “irritated,” [...]
Why, exactly, are "blacks" NOT to be trusted? And does that go for all of them.
The Blind Side is the most pro-Christian, pro-Conservative movie I have ever seen.
See it.
