The casting of Robert Montgomery (1904--1981) in They Were Expendable was uncommonly appropriate. The suave, handsome actor made his name in debonair romantic comedies throughout the 1930s, but like John Ford he didn't wait until America was dragged into war before enlisting. In 1940, fired up by the...

Now you're talking HOPE I can believe in…
He was a class act. Mr. USO.
Loved those movies with Bing Crosby too…
Thanks for the memories.
The Obama Christmas Catalog-Free Nobel Peace Prize With Every Purchase
This is the first White House to have their own holiday catalog. Another first for the Obamas.
Note: I got the customer reviews from Amazon…good satire
I wish someone would make a bowing Obama doll.
Pearl Harbor was bombed. The "criminal" Japanese bombers should have been prosecuted as a criminals in a civilian court in Hawaii, according to Obama and Attorney General Holder. It is ridiculous to bring terrorists to New York City for trial with the rights of American citizens, with the United States Constitution on the terrorists' side. Part 2 of 9/11 will begin with the propaganda to the world about the Evil Satan — the United States deserved 9/11. Remember Rev. Wright (Obama's pastor of 20 years) said from the pulpit on Sunday and on video that the U.S. had "its chickens come home to roost".
Bob Hope is great! Watch some of his clips on Youtube.
Bob Hope – one of the greatest Amercans ever for what he and his fellow Hollywooders did for the troops in WWII, Korea, and Viet Nam. My favorite segments of his stuff are when Jerry Colonna zings him……..
The mold was broken after they made Bob Hope.
You are correct.
But just for fun, tell me one of his GOOD ideas?
Yes, the Bob Hope/David Bowie christmas carrol on Youtube is excellent. Bob had no limits from hollywood, government, or extremists.
The Bob Hope/Bing Crosby Road movies are still a great deal of fun to watch and classics for a reason. Their influence is still with us. Watch a couple of Road pictures then watch almost any action movie made within the last twenty years – the banter, the by-play – almost exactly the same.
In other news-
He wasn't bowing:
BARACK OBAMA HIDES RARE MEDICAL CONDITION
http://naturalfake.wordpress.com/2009/11/14/obama...
I just bought a DVD of "Son of Paleface" for my teenaged daughter for Christmas. (It's one of her favorite movies. Go figure.)
No one in Hollyweird today has the class of Bob Hope (except for a few) with all that he did for our military.
There's a funny clip with Hope I watched the other day, and it's titled "Best one liner ever" for a reason,lol..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHK-ioV8UE8
Bob Hope was a real American and real entertainer. He did the shows for our troops, not for himself. There was no "cause" other than supporting our troops in the best way he could. Hope was the ultimate class act and I still sorely miss him after all these years.
Somebody had to say it.
Ah, just look at that face! The nose, the jaw, the hair line…
Anyone note anything else Modern Hollywood would say has to be "corrected" before that guy would have a shot at being a successful movie actor?
Can someone please check the tax codes? Has plastic surgery been officially declared a deductible "required for employment" expense for actors?
I heard a few years ago there was going to be a biopic made of Hope with Kelsey Grammar. Does anyone know what happened? Grammar does resemble Hope a lot.
Bob was one of the few entertainers of the 20th century who conquered practically every medium of entertainment: vaudeville, Broadway, radio, film, TV, etc. I can think of perhaps only two or three other legends who did the same: Groucho Marx and Jack Benny are two. We will never see the like of these talents again.
Bob Hope, THE greatest American of all time IMO.
Short post for now-
The actor that looks very much like Bob Hope is…..Charlie Sheen. Just watch his show for a few minutes. He's nit tring to so hope, but he has similar facial expressions and features.
Umm, I think it was Bing Crosby not Bob singing with David.
What an amazing man Bob Hope! His character was unassailable, his love of country without question. A remarkable entertainer, but most importantly, a remarkable American. Those were the days.
When I was a kid my family and I would watch EVERYTHING that Bob Hope did. When he entertained for the troops we made it a point to make time for those shows especially. Bob Hope was THE best!
"nit tring to so hope" = not trying to do Hope.
(Too early to type. I need more sleep.)
On a side note..I just want to say that the link here at BH called Gay Patriot is a pretty interesting place to read if anyone needs a nudge to check it out.
I'll have to go back and read some more but I liked what I saw so far and I might even post once I read some more.
I have always, always admired "ol sky slide nose". I grew up watching the Christmas shows he and his troupe performed for the troops in Vietnam. My mother was a huge fan. It was later that I got to watch the movies that he and Bing made. Classy, dignified, patriotic and honorable. Try using those adjectives to describe Clooney, Penn, Depp, Alec Baldwin, Tina Fey, Janine Garafalo and others. You can't? Me either. The only described star that it might apply to would be Tom Hanks; and only because he keeps his looney leftism out of his work. Jimmy Stewart? Mr. Hanks is not even close.
Lately, I am feeling more and more like this video: Could we Start Again, Please.

Happy Sunday!
Burns and Allen were a third.
And let's add recordings to Hope's list of mediums conquered. He had an excellent singing voice and introduced the song "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" in 1933 from whatever B'way show he and it appeared in.
He began recording in 1938 and continued into the 1950s….perhaps later…..not sure.
That then leaves out Marx, Benny, Burns and Allen.
The Wright Patterson Air Force Museum has a huge display dedicated to him.
Hey – you can give me minus points, but Sheen does look like Hope.
I second that. I've been reading Gay Patriot for years now. They guys there are great!
President Obowma aka Obowmuch
Pathetic and revolting as he humbles our country by his seeming servitude.
And what a graceless clown – shaking and bowing. How about a big slave smile, too?
What an embarrassment.
No, it does NOT leave out Groucho. I have in my posession an album of Groucho Marx Live on Stage. It is a live recording when he was touring with his one-man show. Didn't Benny also record an album playing the violin?
I would NEVER give you minus points, L.B., but I don't really see the resemblance. It may be my extreme prejudice against Sheen because I think he is basically a moron, but…
Besides The Gipper, of course…
He also introduced Buttons and Bows and Silver Bells. Truly a Renaissance Man!
It was Bing.
Bing, meet Bob. Bob, say hello to BIng.
Ba-da-boom, ba-da-bing!
Mmmmaybe.
Is anyone going to watch "The Prisoner" tonight on AMC? Just by watching the promos on tv, it seems very similar to Ayn Rand's "Anthem".
It's a story about a guy who discovers plans for a light bulb in an old tunnel. He lives in a society where the state runs everything and no one has names, just fluffy adjective and numbers (Equality 7-2521 is the main character), and there are no singular pronouns (no I, just "we" and "our"). He meets a like-minded woman and they run off together to form a new society of meritocracy.
I'm going to watch just to see how close the movie is to the book. You should read "Anthem" too, because it's where this world is headed.
Hanks used to, he has let it slip recently
I, too, enjoy reading the posts at http://www.gaypatriot.com
Thanks for reminding me and the rest of us. I appreciate BH posting the link, as well.
Good advice, re the reading of "Anthem." I would particularly like to see younger people exposed to it (and Animal Farm, too). Thanks for bringing that into the mix. I hope someone takes your advice.
I was hoping someone would post this – thanks, Joanna! Great scene, and so true.
I would highly recommend reading Taylor Caldwell's "Of Captains and Kings" to understand how we have arrived at the point we are in this country today. Even the pols that want to do what's right are very effectively thwarted.
Wonderful! Merry Christmas to you, too!
I love Taylor Caldwell. She was one no-nonsense cookie. Read her autobiography, "Growing Up Tough." It was written about 40 years ago, but is very relevant today.
Bob Hope – a famous, successful American who exemplified respecting the Constitution while voluntarily giving back to his country.
Piggy Noonan is at it again, this morning on Chris Matthews show she did her snotty, smirky best to deem
Sarah Palin irrelevant. Even Matthews was more positive than Noonan! This women (Noonan) needs to join the Demacrat party, and get a job in the Obama administration.
I didnt mean to imply it was you, SomeDame, but I enjoy the show, so I see Sheen's face a lot and it dawned on me a while ago how much 'Hope' (but no change) is in his face.
But the recordings that Hope did were in studios with the intention to sell them as records at the time. And he recorded for more than a decade. The Marx thing seems to have been a one-off.
I sincerely hope that a campaign ad is already in the works to highlight Obama's Deference and Apology tours. A montage of his bowing and constant "Blame America (before I became President)" message would be a powerful message to convey next election, particularly to folks who just are not/have not been paying attention (sadly, far too many voters).
I thought and the trailers make it seem like it is a remake of the 60s TV series with Patrick McGoohan. No? Yes?
Seems so –

Bruce Springsteen bellowed "Hello, Ohio!" to his fans at the Auburn Hills Palace. That's in Michigan.
Love those private jet, limo liberals…….they're SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO smart, and conservatives "aren't".
During Iran’s exchange (of bodily fluids) with 0bama, Barack bowed to Iran to ask if he could borrow more time. Iran said, “Yes, but you know what you have to do…” 0bama got down and… Later on, Barack mentioned to Iran that it tasted different than before- like cr@p. Iran said, “You're right, your Safe Schools Czar was here earlier…"
One of the funniest things I ever so Bog Hope do in a film was in NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH from 1941.
He's in the bathroom shaving, brushing his teeth, gargling and carrying on a fast paced conversation with 3 other people present – Willie Best, Edward Arnold, Leif Erickson. Edward Arnold is wearing a very fancy looking suit while 'arguing' with the Hope character when Hope suddenly turns around and lets a spray of water and 'mouthwash' straight at Arnold. 3 things happen – Willie Best goes wide-eyed and gets out of the way. Arnold back up in horror and tries to get out of the way. Erickson begins to laugh and backs out of the doorway he was standing in so he can't be seen by the camera….and Hope just has this big smile on his face…and they cut the scene quickly so they could keep it in the film.
Very funny.
(Remade as LIAR, LIAR – not so funny.)
It's indeed a remake of the 60's tv series , and for what they're worth, the overall reviews seem to say it kinda sucks. Ian McKellan's getting good reviews, but he can make reading the phone book sound good.
Yeah – Bog Hope. (yeesh)
Need more sleep.
Isn't "Animal Farm" still standard reading? I read it for school in ye olden days and it was always taught as the Soviet analogy.
After the Lon Chaney, Jr., thread I watched "My Favorite Brunette" over at the Internet Archive at http://www.archive.org and discovered that there is something Lon Chaney and Dorothy Lamour have in common: they've both carried Bob Hope–Chaney on his shoulder in "Brunette" and Lamour in her arms in "Road to Bali" (coming out of a burning building after Hope had run in to rescue her). ("Bali" is apparently also in the public domain, but it's not at the Archive yet.)
What a comedian! What a golfer! What respect he showed for the troops and this country!
I saw "The Road to Singapore" (the first of the "Road" movies) recently and couldn't believe how young they all looked; it was filmed just before WWII. The war had started by the next war movie, and already he and Bing and Lamour looked older. You can really see in a glimpse the impact of the war on this country in those movies.
Thanks for the memories, Mr. Hope.
Well Bob Hope is missed, From Christmas 1942 to Christmas 1990 he spent it were ever the troops were. And there were the TV special you just wanted to watch, Then MCing the Oscars. Funny thing they never had a problem with getting viewers back then, I just stopped after they dropped Bob. The other thing he could make you bust a gut laughing and never use a foul word. A class act is an understatement. I would guess he is playing perfect golf games with Bing Crosby in the place were all good souls go to .
I shall put it on my reading list.
btw, the 250K check you promised never did get here, so the repo people came and got my truck, mouthing the whole time about Your color selection…………
Hey Everybody! Wanta watch some classic non-politically correct, non-preachy, non-hectoring cartoons that are actually funny for adults and children? Cartoon Network is having a Looney Tunes Marathon all day today. Watch and laugh, WatchandLaughers!
Noonan is sooo melodramatic, with the pained expressions and the tossing of the mane as she ponders serious issues. Pretention and Irrelevancy, thy name is Peggy Noonan.
I'm surprised he didn't yell, "Hello, Cleveland!" while trying to find the stage entrance.
Duane Lester at Right Wing News wrote recently that California has been legally raiding safe deposit boxes of people who have them but go three years without any activity other than rental payments being made. The state considers you dead and auctions off the contents and destroys any papers or other content that is not a revenue source without notice to the bank customer. It's not just that radical Islamist that can't wait for you to die.
Hey, once that check goes in the mail, it's the property of the US Post Office. I plead innocent of all charges…
I already miss "Mad Men."
And like so many other great Americans, he was born in Great Britain.
and I bet obama was in the "church" that day cheering him on.
The mold had a defective nose so God broke it
Nancy Pelosi did -she really did, add an extension for her botox maker patent in the heath care monstrosity!!
Oh, puleeeze……..I'm so buying that………
That ranks right up on the credibility chart with "my dog ate it" and "I'm from the government..I'm here to help you", or Obama just opening his mouth.
In his defense.
Ohio / Michigan….Unless you have GPS,how can you tell yhe difference ?
LOL
/By the way,I am not even a little bit of a fan of his
I love her too. My favorite book of all time is Taylor Caldwell's "Tender Mercies", which I never admit because A) nobody's ever heard of it, and B) it doesn't sound quite as intellectual as saying "Atlas Shrugged" or "War and Peace" or whatever. But, I'll tell you. Just don't tell anyone else.
I recently found a hard bound copy of it in a used book store. You woulda thought I'd just discovered a treasure chest full of diamonds!
Definitely will check out "Growing Up Tough"… After I read "Tender Mercies" again.
My Dad a Navy doctor stationed in Panama during WWII, stood around a piano with Mr. Hope and sang (in my Dad's case off key) and traded currency. It was a welcome respite from caring for all those "boys" and taking the wounded to San Francisco to heal and sometimes die. My Mom and siblings and I watched a lot of Bob Hope specials with my Dad forever linking the two in my heart and mind. Thank you Bob Hope for the memories.
Thanks for the heads up! Here they are, in all their violent, wolf-whistlin', cross-dressin' glory. Hopefully they'll end with What's Opera Doc, the pinnacle of the animated art. Eight hours of Wagner compressed into a few cherce minutes. Now that's civilization.
It's on right now!
I know. I am lost…darn it…I guess I'll have to read a book or somethin.'
KILL DA WABBIT! KILL DA WABBIT!
Obama's big gaff while in Japan was not the bow.
The Obama camp was asked by the Japanese if their was anything he was alergic to so they would be sure items were not put on the menu. The answer came back from the idiot protocal unit within Obama's camp, that he would like Kobe Beef and Yellow Finn Tuna. So instead of replying to the question they told the hosts what to serve the jerk. very bad protocal ( the Japanese are BIG on protocal ) and its been the top story in the Japanese press for the past 2 days. Don't hear about it in the USA press though do you ! Also if you look closely at his bow, the Princess is holding back laughing her ass off at him. Even a japanese commoner is not expected to bow that low to the Emporer !
Agree with niner and with SomeDame.
Ms. Noonan crossed over to the dark side.
I was in my teens when "Born to Run" was released and as a heavy metal guy I knew NO ONE that bought his records.
But millions have, to each their own. What I dislike is his open campaigning for Democrats and Obama.
I really despise multi millionaire liberals advocating policies that they'll figure a way to be exempt from.. What hypocrites.
He may be in line for a gig with Spinal Tap.
That last episode did not disappoint. And Roger reading the newspaper while others are working in that hotel room. Sigh – so good.
Bob Hope; now that is a 'star'.
The blonde January Jones was on SNL. She looked pretty. The skits she was in were as expected from the show – dumb
He likes his kobe beef. Especially when someone else is paying
Saw her appearance advertised, but even she could not tempt me to watch SNL.
The skits were beyond dumb…they were downright painful to watch. Grace Kelly pooting? Stop! You're killing me!
Eeeeeeeuuuuuuuwww, so glad I did not see that.
You're right, time to read more. I've started Pat Conroy's newest.
Hmmmm. Seems kind of contradictory to bow and then demand a specific menu.
Didn't I read that Bob Hope "….Owes Russia $1200."
(wink, wink)
I can honestly say that I saw him live in one of his last (civilian) live performances. AWESOME!!
Another great video obamashuga!! I sent it to my mom, she loved the last one.
Obama and GODD ideas….uhhh hmmm….sorta…well clash!!!
I'm in total agreement with all of you three, about Noonan, she takes herself much too seriously. On FOX News All Stars, Friday, Nina Easton made a swipe at Sarah, saying that she, Sarah Palin, does not apologize for her mistakes; neglecting, of course to name any mistakes Sarah might have made.
In New Jersey, either people worship him, or hate him with a passion, same goes for BonJovi.
That was my first thought LOL!!!
The gigs in Boston have been canceled…Oh that's ok it's not a big college town!!
How come another protocol gaffe doesn't surprise me. I'll have to try and check that one out.
How lucky you were to see him live!
Actually he left owing Forbes something — his last and one of his best jokes.
http://www.forbes.com/2003/08/04/cz_pn_0804hopeed...
While looking up how much his estate was worth, I found this wonderful quote (at his Wikipedia entry) on what he viewed as his greatest honor:
A 1997 act of Congress signed by President Clinton named Hope an "Honorary Veteran." He remarked, "I've been given many awards in my lifetime — but to be numbered among the men and women I admire most — is the greatest honor I have ever received."
Hang in there. Great clip. It is always darkest before the dawn,
Sarah Palin should kick Noonans upper west side rear. She's the only one i trust, other than Fred Thompson, to do the right thing.
There is a good documentary about the troop of performers that Bob Hope often traveled with during WW2 :
Singer Frances Langford
Comic Jerry Colonna
Guitarist/singer Tony Romano
Dancer Patty Thomas
and maybe one other person.
The documentary has Hope and Langford and a couple of other people just sitting around at a patio table talking about old times. Hope is near totally 'off' – no need to be 'on' b/c he is with friends. It is the most casual view of Bob Hope that I have ever seen. Well worth the search. It's been on public television.

Bob Hope: Memories of World War II (1995)
McCain passed 0bama in the polls after Palin was chosen…
Would that we could clone Bob Hope and the other greats….
Just to throw some perverse ickyness into the thread:
The guy playing Peter in the clip is Philip Toubus, better known in some circles as Paul Thomas, major porn actor and director. He is also the nephew of Sara Lee Lubin. Yes, the Sara Lee of Sara Lee Kitchens.
Ain't life strange?
don't forget the unforgettable Dottie Lamour…
Julia Roberts has his nose. And Martha Raye's smile. hmmmmm……..
Well, that seems the way a lot of actors put bread on their table. Sad but true…
Not to cast any aspersions on Hope, but in the interest of full disclosure, I had heard through some reliable sources (Mark Steyn as I recall) that Hope was a big time womanizer, but that his wife Delores (?) let him carry on as long as he was discrete. It made sense of his approval of president Slick back when Slick Willie was president. He was a towering figure in American entertainment history, but like most of them he had issues.
Darn! I missed it!
Most interesting……….a little kiss at twilight, perhaps? Or How'd you like to love me?
I got to see Bob and his wife Delores in Saudi Arabia during the first gulf war. The fact that this 83 year old man and his wife would come to a war zone to perform and meet the troops left me awestruck. He set the bar very, very high. I will forever remember their care, and compassion.
This is what happens when you put liberal mad dogs in power. They run amuck and do everything to piss off America. This is all they have done, they protect criminals for years in out courts, they will legalized every deviant lifestyle. They believe in one people one planet but they want all the achieves to pay for it all. This is why liberals and Democrats can't be in power anymore. They have had 80 years playing politicians and everything the touch turns to shit
