CAIR Seeks HBO Apology for ‘Curb’ Episode Mocking Jesus

WASHINGTON, Oct. 29 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — A prominent national Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization today called on HBO to apologize for an episode of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” in which the main character splattered urine on a painting of Jesus.

In a letter to HBO Chairman and CEO Bill Nelson, Nihad Awad, national executive director of the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) wrote:
“It is beyond tasteless to insult the religious sensibilities of billions of people in America and around the world with such a cheap and vulgar publicity stunt. Jesus, peace be upon him, is loved and revered by both Christians and Muslims. Muslims view him as one of God’s greatest messengers to mankind.
“The Quran, Islam’s revealed text, states: ‘Behold! The angels said: “O Mary! God gives you glad tidings of a Word from Him. His name will be Jesus Christ, the son of Mary, held in honor in this world and the Hereafter and in (the company of) those nearest to God.” (The Holy Quran, 3:45)
“The Prophet Muhammad said: ‘Both in this world and in the hereafter, I am the nearest of all people to Jesus, the son of Mary. The prophets are paternal brothers; their mothers are different, but their religion is one.’
“We understand the drive for ratings, but no one benefits from such a crude attempt to boost the network’s bottom line by manufacturing a religious controversy. HBO should apologize.”
Awad added that American Muslim television viewers contacted CAIR to express their concerns about the HBO episode.

This will drive the lefties nuts trying to figuring out they can mock the stuffy repressed Christians for not having a sense of humor and ay the same time praise the wise Muslims for taking a stand against cultural insensitivity. If anything, there's probably a better chance that HBO will listen to a left-wing Muslim group than any of those right-wing Christian ones.

I didnt see this coming. Not sure if I'm on board yet. On his show yesterday, Michael Savage was wondering where the Christian outrage was on this issue. I'm not sure Christians should take the victim approach on this one. I think this is a turn the other cheek issue. Its offensive, but I'm more saddened than outraged. I made fun of Christians at one point in my life as well. Larry David is just lost. I dont want my rights as a Christian infringed upon, and I know its a slippery slope, but I dont know if the victim approach is the way to go here. Need more time to digest this one…

As a Christian I expect this type of sick behavior. Sinners sin a great deal and are professionals at mocking their Creator. Such BS. There is not a single reference to Jesus anywhere in any Islamic text. They do talk a lot about Esau, the son of Miriam, who faked his own crucifixion. Isa is Arabic for Esau (i.e., 'hairy red bastard-reject'). Yeshua is Arabic for Jesus. There is no Yeshua in any Islamic text.

Actually I am glad for the intellectual honesty CAIR is showing. Unlike others on this site I do believe that Jews, Muslims and Christians worship the same God. I can't agree that all religions or at least Islam, Judaism, and Christianity are serving the same God. Jesus is Love, and no one demonstrated a fuller life of compassion than Him, but He made claims of complete authority that were not politically correct in His day or our own. He said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father but by Me." and in speaking to the Jewish leaders who were rejecting Him, He said the staggering words, "You are of your Father, the devil." (John 8:44) Certainly this would be called "hate speech" though it was the most loving thing that He could say.

I never thought the criticism was as repugnant as the death sentence. Nonetheless, I find the criticism repugnant. I wonder why you don't find that criticism outrageous.
I repeat, it is one group of grifters providing cover for a another like-minded group. I understand that Islam is very different from Catholic Christianity. Both are shamanistic, though, and all shamans recognize the weakness of their own positions, which leads them to occasionally lend a hand to a competing shaman.

The story does mention that the Pope gave no comment in the paper. This was all I could find regarding the statrement that the Vatican condemned Rushdie and stated nothing with regard to the fatwa.
It seems to me the Pope decided to stay out of it while the paper while recognizing that one should respect others religious views felt their should not be a violent reaction to the perceived offense. Thanks for the clarification I was unsure who L'Observatore was.
Someone tried to inist to me once that the Pope denied the Holocaust in Israel. When I researched that I discovered the Pope said milions were killed in Germany in the war and a Jewish official reminded him it was six million. It amazes me this would even be reported.
No offense but your argument cannot even be logically considered. Muslims believe their is One God and no other. Cristians believe their is One God and no other. The Muslim Religion springs from the Christian Religion just as the Christian Religion springs from the Jewish religion.
Yes there are Muslims that believe in backwards things that I feel is not even supported by their religion. That being said I am not one to condemn all Muslims as evil, evidently you are. I believe some call that bigotry. Most muslims live under the despotism of murderousdictators.
Tell you what ignore the dictators, don't give a bleep about any of those dirty people that did not have the benefit of getting your Religion or what goes on there and watch 9/11 reoccur again and again. Muslims from Turkey for some reason do not join homicide bombing cults. Why is that? Could it be they live in a stable democracy while those in Somalia, Sudan, Iran, Syria, et. al don;t. No obviously it must be which two or three symbols one uses to refer to the formal name of God.
You guys still don't get it. Larry David is not the issue here. The issue is that the 'Church' can piss on people for thousands of years, namely the Jews AND you all know it, don't try to deny it. What is really disturbing and that all of you should be extremely concerned about is that "CAIR" is speaking and crying out loudly and making a big deal out of Larry David's symbolic act. When in fact "CAIR" HAS NOT ONCE. HAS NOT ONCE come out against Islamic Terrorists who actually do something really bad, like kill people – get it? Is that not disturbing to anyone? Think about that.
With all due respect where I first heard the "moon demon" nonsense was a pamplhelt by Jack Chik in 1998. Among other things such as anyone who plays DnD will eventually be led to a group where you learn to cast real demonic spells. (Mind you the distubing thing behind this for him was not the nonsense that one could cast spells but that the spells were real and of the devil.) His other works were a vaguely anti-semetic diatribe on why we should not trust "those" people. He had one on Islam to because I guess hey why not. No offense to you but those pamphlets were so bigoted it was scary.
I disagree with many things Muslims say but I can do that without denigrating their religion or trying to insist they don't believe in God. If someone tells me they believe in God then I assume they believe in God. I don't think you will find a single Muslim saying hey I worship the Moon. But I may be wrong. I'll let the Muslims tell me though since I assume they know their own religion.
