Larry David’s ‘Piss Christ’
by Big HollywoodAn email received today:
“First let me state that I’ve been a fan of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” for many years and, even though Larry David is a liberal, I generally enjoy the writing and Larry’s antics. However, this time what I saw made me feel a little sick, extremely disappointed and a bit angry as well. I will never watch the show again as I have lost all respect and feelings of good will for Mr. David.

“Did you happen to see the episode to which I refer? Assuming you did not catch the episode, briefly stated: Larry pisses on the face of a painting of Jesus Christ, followed by mocking of Christians who believe the piss drop on the face of Jesus is a tear, thus they’ve witnessed a miracle. I wonder how many other viewers, Christian and non Christian, are similarly shocked and disgusted? Of course, the hypocrisy is that Mr. David would never exhibit such gross contempt for any other religion, especially Islam.
“Can you imagine the shit storm that would follow if David pissed on a painting of the prophet Muhammad? Of course, HBO, the complicit scum that they are, would not have allowed that to air.”
This article also mentions the incident.

I've never watched the show, anyway. Now it's ensured that I won't.
Sounds like they just jumped the shark.
Or he is auditioning for a CZAR posistion in the WH
Larry David/Art Czar
decent writer, terrible comedian- and now Christ hater…
It doesn't make Mel Gibson look anywhere near as bad, now does it? David is, of course, jewish- and all this will do is fan the flames of anti-jewish sentiment.
Nice going, asshead…
Anti-Christian bigotry is the last refuge of a scoundrel – and a coward. If Larry David had any balls, he would mock fanatical Muslims who actually believe there are 72 virgins waiting for them if they blow themselves up with a bunch of innocent people. Of course, he's probably one of those foolish Jews that believe Moses really did part the Red Sea.
Larry David – just another piece of "conformist" liberal scum.
Imagine the visceral outrage that would ensue if someone took a dump on one of the countless pieces of "art" of the messiah…..
I stopped watching when they had the episode where a conservative was shown to be worse than a child molester.
Ah, this episode was directed by Larry Charles, the same guy who did Bill Maher's Religulous….
If you're in dire need of a laugh in liberal land, just go down to the well of Christianity since nothing will happen. These comics just need to admit they're scared shitless of insulting Islam and I'll respect them.
Most Americans can identify with pissing on Jesus as opposed to Muhammed because there are more Christians than Muslims here. Thus, as an American, pissing on Jesus is funnier than pissing on Muhammed to me.
If it can actually be considered "funny' at all.
He didn't piss ON the painting… a drop splashed on a painting which happened to be located on the adjacent wall next to the toilet (which was a bit contrived… I'm not a Christian but I would consider it sacrilegious to mount a painting of Jesus in one's bathroom… that's just me).
.I saw the episode as well. It was not as egregious as you denote. It was tasteless, but isn’t everything on CYE (last week he was dating gals in wheelchairs for sympathy and good parking)?
He didn’t intentionally deface the picture, as you seem to describe. It was unintentional, and the fallout was not a strike at Christians, IMHO. I agree that the episode was a little over the top, and strong for my tastes, but I’m a Christian, and didn’t consider it a overt swipe at my faith.
The first two seasons of Curb were genius, and I've always thought the show was much better than Seinfeld. However, the new season has been a huge disappointment. I was offended by the new episode's jab at Christians, but Larry has done it many times in previous seasons (Cheryl's Christian family was ripped on often; the episode with the "Passion of the Christ" nail) so it wasn't that shocking.
May the retriubution be swift and sure.
It is cheap, but it did play along with the theme of inadvertant bad luck that usually goes into his shows.
I do like his show, it's just that Christianity is such an easy target it gets boring after a while.
Nice going Larry David. Somewhere Joseph Goebbels is Smiling.
…"Larry David is atheist Jew, as is Bill Mahr, Larry King, Wolf Blitzer, Spielberg, Al Neuharth, Jon Stewart…..all haters of Christ and Christianity. "
You forgot to include Hussein Obama and Rahm Emanuel
I'm not offended at the mockery-Jesus endured much worse in the flesh and still asked the Father to forgive-but I am offended by the fact that our society has devolved to the point that this passes for entertainment.
I wonder if anybody on the writing staff or any of his friends advised him against this. As a Catholic Conservative I feel that my values (Western Civilization) are under attack from Hollywood, Chavez, Hamas, Al Quaeda, Labour Party, Obama Czars, Evagelical Atheists, Ortega, PRD (Mexico Leftist Party), any kid who attended College, ABC-NBC-CBS-CNN-NYTimes, Euro Press, International Answer, ACORN, SEIU, NEA, Teachers Union, IRS, La Raza, LULAC, MeCHA, Mexican Mafia, Nuestra Familia, Aryan Brotherhood, Tides Foundation, Sierra Club, NAMBLA, GLAD, & even the NFL who refused Rush Limbaugh an ownership position in the St. Louis Rams.
He's a piece of trash.
What exactly does pissing on the image of Jesus do? Make someone feel like a little rebel?
I fail to understand the humor.
I was more disturbed that he didn"t clean up after himself or wash his hands.
HBO is useless — Bill Maher is a classic example. They think stuff like this is "cutting edge" — THEY ACTUALLY BELIEVE THIS IS WITTY — give them a break, in a world of youtube, DVD's, pay-per-view, Red Box, online movie premieres, they are more and more irrelevent. People like David Letterman and Joy Behar, Janeane Garofalo, Sandra Bernhardt, Tina Fey — they should go there to live out the rest of their tired, bitter, lives — the "retirement home" for worn out, crude, un-funny, humor.
HBO — you are not cutting edge anymore — you are boring and predictable and just mean, like Bill Maher.
While the incident is highly offensive and demonstrates the utter contempt the left has for Christianity and Christians, it also reveals the intellectual deficiency of the left and their flippant attitude toward the western civilization that allowed them to become hedonists. Comedy, once a clever art form, has now digressed to exploiting bodily functions for laughs. We have went from Arsenic and Old Lace to the junior high locker room. So much for the progression of the arts. So much for intellectual cutting-edge and risky comedy. Mr. David is a fool – and not a very talented one at that.
As a Christians I am offended but I am not surprised. Leftists are intent on destroying western civilization so they can build their utopian civilization upon its ashes. Mr. David's actions merely mirror the disrespect he has in his heart for the Christianity that allowed the western world to emerge out of barbarism. He contributes nothing but seeks to destroy and ridicule the beliefs of others in the hope that they will join him in his nihilism. Such a sad use of a life.
.
No, it doean't make it better that a drop splashed on it. It just shows the lack of tolerance this bunch of people have. Most of them act like Ferris Bueller on his day off. They never learned respect, or common decency. They just follow the herd and try to be even more outlandish than the one before. I have no connection at all with people who act like this. They are so selfish and self centered. But one day, they will know that it is not all about them, it is about him. The one they mocked.
How would one tell?
Well, Jesus would have turned the other cheek. Mohammed would have wailed like a banshee and sent disciples to cut off the offending pecker. I am sure that if anyone 'inadvertently' pissed on the Wailing Wall, Mr. David would be dutifuly outraged. Or at least his mother would have been.
Uh, as far as I'm aware of, Mel Gibson hasn't done anything like this to insult Christ or Christians.
well said! and don't you recognize it in all the old stuff now? once your awareness for this garbage is triggered, you begin to notice it even in commercials, kids shows, music, schools, literature, comedy, "art", — when people laugh at this stuff, I feel I'm in the invasion of the body snatchers!
Although I am sure this is a swipe at Christians, I think it is more a commentary on the intellectual deficiency of the writer and actor. How intelligent and clever is his action in the first place? What vital social commentary does it make?
We'll all chip in, fly you to Afghanistan and give you a picture of Muhammed to piss on and find out.
I guess you'e never heard the expression "Holy shit".
Sick.
Not like you described, at all. If your readers want to believe what you wrote is true, I won't try to get them to actually see what happened.
To those who might have a mind of their own, the idea in the story was that people see "miracles" where there are none, such as all the Mary's in: oil slicks, toast, windows, stained bathroom walls (as on Sunny In Philadelphia), so forth. If people are dumb enough to believe that the Virgin Mary would cause her image to appear in a potato chip, then they will be dumb enough to be offended by this Curb Your Enthusiasm episode.
In other words, the author of this "report" who is going to boycott the show would believe "Jesus On Toast".
I've seen two minutes of the show and I thought it sucked. If I cross paths with this demented cretin Larry David I'll be sure to piss on him and he'll have real tears running down his face.
That one piece of toilet paper per flush must be getting to him….
Agreed. I think we are witnessing the de-evolution of man as discussed by Paul in Romans 1.
He can wipe himself with the Quran too while he's at it!
The scene should be publicly re-staged with Muhammad, Shiva, Buddha, even Xena, and then Larry David just to be… you know… culturally funny.
In his defense, Mr. David has taken a few shots at religious jews on his show.
In fact, why not go Full-Messiah and re-stage it with Obama complete with laugh track.
Ha! I learned that expression when a bird crapped on my shoes during a courtyard lunch in high school many years ago.
FATHER, forgive larrry david for he knows not what he does.
"Funny" is subjective. I think this sounds funny and now, thanks to this article, I will seek out this episode and watch it.
I've rolled doobs out of Bible paper before, but never pissed on Jesus, so I'm not sure how that feels…
I don't think the Afghanis are known for their senses of humor… I'd hope you wouldn't hold Americans to the same humorless standards.
Never been a Fan of that style of show. It has nothing to do with politics but with the style. I can't see what the fuss is about Office but I know it has a large following. I just find these types or styles of shows are largely ego driven excercises. Either go full improv or full script but the improv/outline based show is just not for me.
First off, the Bible is terrible to smoke a J with since the paper is usually very thin. I own plenty of them, and I recommend pages out of a Rolling Stone magazine instead. I find the amount of ink on a Matt Taibbi article provides a nice texture for the bud.
So can I technically call you a book burner? And did you feel like a little stoner rebel, O Evolved one?
The author is apparently unaware that even depciting Muhammed, let alone pissig on the image, will get you killed by fanatic Muslims. David I'm sure thinks this showed guts, just as he calls Moore a hero. But taking on Chrisitans is safe as tolerance is the cornerstone of the faith. Try the Muslims some time(ask Rushdie about this). I know that's risking death; I'd settle for them ttaking on Scientology (when pigs fly)
I wasn't thinking about their senses of humour. I was thinking about how funny I would find it.
So you're saying that Muslim's aren't as good as we are? Doesn't that make you a bigot?
Just askin'.
Hey, when you want to burn one and you've got nothing else to use, the Gideons can be life savers!
Can't say that I'm a bit interested, and I'm wondering if anyone is brave enough to BBQ one of Mr. David's sacred cows? You're right – I've tried to watch one or two of these Judd Aptow comedies, and found them so banal, that I haven't bothered to watch the entire lot of them. If I want a good fart joke, I'll become a crossing guard or a playground monitor – at least I expect that sort of thing from 12 year olds, and not the much-vaulted Larry David.
There ar eno paintings of the prophet-doing so will get you killed. I'd love to see David take them on but he wouldnt dare nor would HBO put it on. Cultural quiz here: conflict betwen copeting ideologies. One frets over putting women's underwear on someone's head; the other cuts heads off and proudly displays the video on its website. Whcih side are you betting on to prevail over the long term? Just thought I'd ask-while I can.
Hey Larry, Jesus loves you!!!!!
Eh, his soul is damned anyway…
Wait, what soul?
no, he insulted jewish people- and was excoriated for years… but his was a drunken rant echoing his father's sentiments, not a concious show biz decision to insult 85% of the US…
good point. this is more about atheist haters than any religion- one suspects David to be non-observant…
Thank you. Much more tactfully said than what I was about to write!
What have we come to? And, where are we going?
Agreed. I was not sure if you meant that incident or the film, 'The Passion' itself. The film was accused of being anti-Semetic, which is ridiculous since it was simply following the biblical account.
Whoo hoo! Fight the power!

There are ways to make that point without using teenage bathroom humor. Surely you can see that? But, sorrowfully, our society has been dumbed down to the lowest common denominator – sad.
and you're surprised his wife divorced him last year?

Leno asked Seinfield once if he was anything like his character. Jerry said no and that he wouldn't want to have anything to do with his character or any of the others from the show because they were awful people. That's what was brilliant about it Seinfield it was a show about a bunch of self centered miserable jerks who obessed on every petty little thing. The humor came from the situations that this behavior got them into. The final episode while flawed did have the right idea, Jerry and his pals finally are made to account for their behavior. The difference is Larry David is the self centered miserable jerk he plays on his show and what is even more insufferable is he is rich miserable jerk with a make believe job that pays him alot of money and still whines.
I'm a life long Lutheran and I thought the episode was very funny. It seems to me that Larry David takes shots at everybody. There was an episode a few years back that had him set up a date between a blind man and an ugly woman who wore a burqua.
What do you expect from hollywood? Nothing new under the sun. But how does a person who considers himself an atheist (someone who claims to know beyond a shadow of a doubt that the God of the Holy Bible does not exist) Why is it they spend every waking hour (as Maher does) hating that God that they are sure doesn't exist? Seems to me that's like hating santa claus or the easter bunny.
Also, could we not all agree that people who find Jesus's image on a cornflake, or a grease-smeared window or any other unlikely place, are just a wee tad comical?
I wonder why the author felt it necessary to mischaracterize the actual events depicted in the fictional work.
Was it to whip up the Christians into a frenzy of hurt and offense? Nahhhh, no way.
You're talking about dumping on an Obama picture, right?
And yeah. If we thought the "stink" about Joker-Obama was bad!
Are we not men? Are we not Devo?
Yeah, carlton. I was wondering the same thing…
Why would the author deliberately misconstrue what happened, as well as what it meant in the context of the show? To whip up some good old Christian paranoia, hurt and offense, that's why.
I think that people who find "miraculous images" in everyday objects are hilarious.
I would echo your sentiments, but my father died some years ago.
Let's not forget that the Vatican, not to mention plenty of other Christian clerics, sided with the fanatical Muslims against Salman Rushdie.
you bet- didn't even think of that firestorm. It was, of course, the predecessor to his rant/arrest, and is largely responsible for his drunken opining.
By the way, the agent who claimed 'he would never work in Hollywood again'?
Ari (brother of Rahm) Emanuel… small world, eh?
Wait, you're talking sense.
That's not allowed when someone's trying to whip Christians into an offended, self-righteous frenzy.
Hmmmmmm…….
You might've misunderstood the atheist position. Those who hate the Christian God are called Satanists.
Y'see, atheists don't subscribe to the theory of God or Satan (nor the angels, apostles, etc., etc.)
Isn't it great that we live in a country in which Mr. David is free to do something like this? In a middle eastern country he would have been beheaded or something, we are fighting for his freedom to write a show like this. God bless America! Continue to watch the show, or not, you have the freedom to decide.
Clever and witty are lost on the 3rd grade knuckleheads who create "comedy" today. Bathroom humor is as good as it gets. The "cutting edge comedy" of Bill Mahr is simply name calling. Comedy scripts reveal that lack of intelligence of their "creators" to the same degree that "news" on CNN fails to reflect analysis and insight, and simply piles on the intellectual dishonesty and prejudices of the infantile babblers like Rich Sanchez, Wolf Blitzer, Campbell Brown and Larry King. And when you've no longer got "Bush" to kick around, the gutless can always go after the Christians, who will simply turn the other cheek, and not go after the disparager with a cutlass. The moral descent of the liberals is falling faster, though not unlike, a turd off the Empire State Building.
Carlton, I see the humorous side of the desire to believe and how susceptible humans are to that, but irregardless, it is a huge slight against Christianity, again making believers look like idiots. It's another infantile display of "gross contempt" for Christians. He also bashes Jews in other programs. Just more liberal elitist blatant contempt and bigotry…right in line with the likes of Bill Maher and Joy Bahr, pathetic.
Just read his first post.
Really? And how would YOU nuance this scene? It isn't poor Larry's fault, no- it has to be the evil writer of the piece…
Sad, and pathetic try.
Nice swipe, atheist and typical.
Wow, I had no idea. Small world, indeed.
Don't patronize me,
I know what an atheist is. An atheist is an unbeliever. There have been unbelievers since time began. What I find so amusing is that these "new-age" ones act like they came up with something new! There's only two ways to go. There only ever has been two ways to go. Either you believe in God, or you don't.. I'm just glad I don't have to pay anyone else's bill at the end of my time on the earth.
You guys are assholes.
by the way, seeing some of the posts here a word to the wise-
Do not defend the undefensible. The whole concept is flat out evil, people- no matter what 'context' it was in…
He couldn't piss on a picture of Muhammed because he would never show a picture of Muhammed in the first place (that would be too disrespectful).
David is just another talentless, overrated ugly, mean person in the sea of talentless, overrated, ugly mean people that is Hollywood.
HBO, Showtime et al pride themselves on slick programing, usually subject matter defined as "critically acclaimed" or "cutting-edge". Larry David's show tries to be one of these but in reality is just another turd circling the drain. One reason I don't have premium channels.
It wasn't the "accident" ….it was the comment afterward. And of course, it was contrived, part of a skit.
I hope HBO takes a huge hit with all Christians canceling their service.
Larry, you pissed on Jesus. Who would ever come up with such a thought never mind write it into a sitcom.
Larry are you trying to tell Christians something. Just come out on your next show and tell us how you really feel. Be man!! Larry, don't you understand the comedic imperative. We've never laughed with you, we've only laughed at you.
Ditto
No nuance required — I would've just described it as it actually unfolded on the show, rather than massaging it, the way this writer did. From comments I've read above, the author of this piece chose the most inflammatory way to describe the scene.
I haven't seen the show, never watched it even once, but other commenters have said the writer's description was, if not technically inaccurate, misleading.
nice try.
But it doesn't wash. These people have as much right to discuss sensitive topics such as faith as they are nuclear non-proliferation treaties and throwweights.
Menaing they know NOTHING. They have opinions, and they are relentlessly negative. Projecting your own atheism into this as a defense does not work…
why the defense? This was a contrived, not an accidental sequence. They vetted this in numerous script sessions. They wanted there for a reason. Humour- which was missing from the scene, as it does from 97.8% of the series- had nothing to do with it. It's just tasteless crap posing as entertainment.
But you are welcome to watch it…
Kevin MacDonald has written a book about this..
Well, actually not. When time began, there were no sentient humans.
Now, since recorded history began, I can get with that.
And, actually, when you and I are in judgment, and they tell me I have to go to the hell which Moses never mentioned, but which Jesus invented, just for the likes of me, I'm gonna tell 'em you destroyed my faith, and you can take a swan dive into the Lake of Fire, right along with me. (I hate going on long trips alone.) What a load o' baloney.
LOL — You could be right.
"I would echo your sentiments, but my father died some years ago."
Well if he fathered you, then good riddance to him and you should follow suit. You contribute nothing to this site and you obviously have a childish and petty need to push people's buttons.
It isn't a defense of the show. I've never seen even one episode of the show. Of course the sequence was contrived. Contrived, hell, it was actually rehearsed. OMG, it was a conspiracy, complete with rehearsals. Of course, it wasn't accidental.
It's an indictment of the author, for exactly what I said, choosing the most inflammatory way to describe the scene. If the author hadn't (seemingly) done that, I wouldn't have commented at all.
And as for humor — I do see humor in people who "see" miraculous images in everyday objects, like a piece of toast. I have no opinion on this show, none.
