Close Gitmo!: Musicians Angry Their Music Used For ‘Torture’
by Big Hollywood
From the “Truth is Stranger Than Fiction” files:
Rock bands including Pearl Jam and REM have joined a coalition of musicians to support the US president’s efforts to close the Guantanamo Bay prison.
The National Campaign to Close Guantanamo, which also includes former military officers, launched on Tuesday.
Many of the artists who have signed up are angry that their music was used as an interrogation tool in the jail.
But CIA spokesman George Little said music was used only for security, rather than “punitive purposes”.
In a statement, REM said: “We have spent the past 30 years supporting causes related to peace and justice. To now learn that some of our friends’ music may have been used as part of the torture tactics without their consent or knowledge, is horrific. It’s anti-American, period.”
Other artists to sign up to the coalition include Jackson Browne, Steve Earle, Roseanne Cash, Billy Bragg, Bonnie Raitt and Rage Against The Machine.
On behalf of the campaign, the National Security Archive in Washington is filing a Freedom of Information Act request seeking classified records that detail the use of loud music as an interrogation device.
How lacking in self-awareness do you have to be to claim that your music is used as torture? That’s not something most people would call attention to.
Big Hollywood agrees and calls on the CIA to start using audio tapes of rock stars pontificating on politics as an interrogation tactic. The terrorists would break much faster.

I understand that the Meow Mix Cats also signed the petition.
I was arrested a couple of weeks ago (the charges were later dropped), and while riding in the police cruiser, the radio volume was turned far too loud. It hurt my ears. What recourse do I have for restitution for this flagrant violation of Geneva Convention torture statutes?
Some of the music these *artists* product is tortuous even to the non-Gitmo population.
The real reason they are upset is that they want royalties….
Too funny!!
Meow Meow Meow Meow!
Meow Meow Meow Meow!
Meow Meow Meow Meow!
LISTENING TO PEARL JAM AND REM IS TORTURE.THE BANDS YOU LISTED ARE SO YESTERDAY,CAN'T GET NOTICED ANT OTHER WAY
Listening to Michael Stipe (REM) and the Muppet character that is Eddie Vedder is torture enough for me. Grunge is dead, so get used to it boys. And after reading the list of other "artists" which signed on, I'm surprised they aren't all sending demos, outtakes, and b-sides to the CIA just to get someone, even if they are just detainees, to listen since their music finds little if any air play these days.
I agree but I would add that many of these so-called artists are so self absorbed with themselves that they just can't believe anyone would even consider their music torture.
I was tortured by Jackson Browne music all through high school. can I sue him? How about all these bleeding heart liberal morons just stop making music then there will be none to use! I am so sick of self rightious celebrties who are ALWAYS on the wrong (liberal) side of the issue. GO AWAY!!!!
It's only the music making commies that are complaining.
Makes a little more sense if the correct word "produce" would have been used, but too late now.
Stupid REM…if their efforts (i.e. music) have been used over the last 30 years to promote peace, how, by very definition, can playing such music be torture? Get a clue guys…if your music is so bad that is causes pain, what does that say about your talent!!!
"But CIA spokesman George Little said 'Oh, shut up, you whining idjits!' as he pointed and laughed at Mike Stipe.
Rage against the machine's music is about peace and justice? Has the guy ever actually listened to ANY of their lyrics?
Another thought: Why are we assuming it was the detainees in Gitmo that were being tortured by listening to this music?
Wow! I was pretty sure Michael Stipe died in 2000, maybe 2001. Who knew?? Oh my goodness, anti American Communist Steve Earl signed on, OH MY!!! It must be serious! Oh wait, the Chomsky loving Communists Rage Against the Machine are also part of this….WOW!!!! And somehow Jackson Browne found the time to sign this petition, what with all that girlfriend beating he is known for. Which brings me too the over rated Bonnie Raitt…Did she actually sign this or did she have someone else sign it for her and then take all the credit? Hey Bonnie "Are you ready for a thing called" writing your own songs??? (She should thank John Hiatt everday she is alive)
SHUT UP AND SING!!!!!!!!!!
[...] This post was mentioned on Twitter by Big Hollywood, Rick Sheridan. Rick Sheridan said: REM is essence of torture. RT @bighollywood Close Gitmo!: Musicians Angry Their Music Used For ‘Torture’ http://bit.ly/19pZ2g [...]
Well we could always just play the Star Spangled banner…. Oh, but that would look nationalist like… :-/
I wonder if Barney will sign that petition as well…
I wonder if Drowning Pool will sue the U.S. Army for allowing their men to blare that song while they were driving through Baghdad too…
Frankly I'm glad RATM is on the list … having terrorists listen to Rage would probably just encourage them to do more violence against America since hatred of America is at RATM's core.
At any rate, thanks Mike for putting together another list of artists I shouldn't support!
Would love to see a counter group of artists REQUESTING that their music be used on these animals
I always knew Barney was torture.

Jackson Browne was running his own torture chamber when he was with Darryl Hannah. Didn't he have a hobby of beating the hell out of her?
Great Britian Batman…. who knew music was torture?
*Sorry couldn't resist…
Amen, chopper. Play 'em some Stuck Mojo ("For the Cause of Allah"/"Open Season") or Megadeth ("Amerikhastan").
I went to a Bonnie Raitt concert about 10 years ago. I was wondering why Unplanned Parenthood had a booth there. These libs are a laugh riot. Eddie Vedder is a complete moron. If I see him on the street here, I'll have my niece punch him in the balls. Wait, he's a lib, so she might be punching air.
What happened to the days when you could pay your $100 to go see a concert and not have it be a political rally? Do these idiots feel that I've just paid out a lot of hard earned money (not to them, since they are multi-millionaires) to go see and listen to them sing their songs. Not to hear their political opinions? They don't respect their clientele very much. Time to shred CD's!
To me, torture is having to listen to some of my favorite bands like Led Zeppelin & The Who, being used to sell cars!
For Eddie Vedder's opinion about anything to matter he would need a time machine to go back to 1992. What's funny about him is that when Johnny Ramone (American loving Conservative-who even said "God Bless America and God Bless President Bush" from the stage at the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame inductions pretty much pissing everyone in the audience off)) of the RAMONES was dying. This guy couldn't keep away from him. It was as if he was using Johnny's sickness to try and stay in the spot light. Too bad GOD took the wrong one.
This music has been torturing me for years, it's about time it was put to good use. They should be greatful that their music fnally had a chance to make a difference in the world.
sorry to sound jaded- but Ho hum…
We would be surprised if they DIDN'T do this nonsense, you know- man bites dog? So acting predictably really isn't a story.
Perhaps the Gitmo chaps could be sent to Georgia and live with Mr Stipe. Let Eddie Vedder take in a couple of them and he can bring them with on his annual sojourn to Wrigley Field. Go out for falafel afterwards.
What? They won't do it? Oh, that's right. They're LIBERALS. It isn't their responsibility.
It's OURS. Just shut up and buy their recordings…
The question is, does this form of "torture" even work? If you make someone listen to "Shiny Happy People" enough times (like once or twice), they'll confess to starting the San Francisco fire.
If playing their music too loud is torture, then thousands of concert-goers will have a class-action lawsuit just raring to go. Oh, and pretty much any music too loud is torture. The only concert I've ever been to was Weird Al Yankovic and they had it cranked up painfully loud.
Check out the new version of "Mmm Mmm Mmm Barack Hussein Obama" at: http://www.myspace.com/rogerweber
You'll get a laugh!
Though I've learned to more or less accept it (for lack of a better word), I hear ya. Latest casualty: The Church's "Under the Milky Way" for Lincoln. Oh, the humanity, but at least it's a Ford, right?
I am also oonboard with using Yanni, anything rap and random elevator tunes played continuously for hours on end.
Then he dropped trow and told Stipe to kiss the fattest part of his ass.
If you read Vedder's bio, he reads like a guy who's got a serious chip on his shoulder. He's a high-school drop out from Illinois who, sounds like, hates everything.
"Major Diana Haynie, a spokeswoman for Joint Task Force Guantanamo, said loud music has not been used with detainees since the fall of 2003."
LOL – Pampered poodles complaining about loud music played for jihadis six years ago? That outta help.
Let them eat Mantovani!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wX0mb9VqBe8
So we are to expect Gitmo syndrome from our soldiers, manifested by symptoms of fear of elevator music. "I wish I could be mellow for instance Jackson Browne Fountain of sorrow my ass mthr fkr I hope you wind up in the ground" Tonio K.
Zack de la Rocha and his merry band of commie morons are self-avowed Anarchists and believe anyone right of Mao to be right-wing loons. I would think this might hurt their cause, but we're not in America anymore.
First, Pearl Jam and REM ARE torture to listen to.
Second, why is it that these rock stars drop out of high school and still think they are more intelligent than everyone else. Eddie Vedder and Michael Stipes would be homeless if not for music. Idiots.
So instead of the artists being tortured, it's the other way around. We get tortured by the artists. The world has truly been turned on it's head.
Due to the lead singer's love for all things druggie, there is no more Drowning Pool. He aspirated on his own vomit, his was the last body to hit the floor.
I didn't confess to anything, but I did roll into a ball and sob very loudly to drown out Stipe's voice.
That's a pretty catchy tune!
Ther majority of those who signed this petition currently do not have a single in the Top 40 of any music genre. Could this be a vast left wing conspiricy to bring them back to the charts and resurrect their long dead careers ? I don't think even Greg Gutfeld and his merry band of RED EYE-ers could do anything for these losers.
Hey, the 1980s & 90s are calling they don't want you back !
If this so-called music prevented any major attacks on US soil so be it, by having the terrorists revealing plots inorder to stop the music, I say ROCK ON ! While we're at it, why not blare Elton John or Billy Joel.
They think they're anarchists, but they're really just spolied little brats. Let the rest of the world descend into anarchy as long as they still get their room service. Rage Against the Machine's music is just one big temper tantrum. They need to get over themselves.
Personally, I believe that some of them need to be reported to Air Resources Board for fouling the air waves.
Well, keep in mind that RATM sold out when they (the band, minus De La Rocha) teamed with Chris Cornell & became "pop", via the vehicle known as Audioslave. Apparently "Be Yourself" means becoming the modern version of the Human League.
I do love anarchists/marxists (and Tom Morella, the guitar player, states that he is a Marxist) who go on tours to promote their latest release, which you can purchase on iTunes!
These folks personify "limosine liberal" to the max.
Since the detainees are complaining, based on results, we can say with 100 percent confidence that the music of these pseudo-artists is, indeed, torture.
You might note that the one torture never administered to James Bond is REM music. That's because even 007 would wilt under such abuse.
He's just another adolescent that refuses to grow up. He can join Rage Against the Machine in a giant temper tantrum somehwere in Seattle. I could care less, they don't make music worth listening to anymore anyway.
I started making making plans for a 3 state killing spree after hearing that song a couple times…..
For the government monitors, I was only kidding……..
Actually rjwest, if you listent to Rages lyrics theyare not always about peace, they talk about shooting and violence to bring about change. Sort of like how governments handle terrorists and rogue nations. Zack has always been a radical leftist, and I would tell him so in so many words but I do enjoy his music.
You'd think they'd be happy just to get their CDs played.
A few thoughts, first watch out for anyone using the terms "peace" and "justice," they usually are working for the opposite.
The reason Gito mo was opened in the first place was to give these people some place safe and secure. The alternative would be to either shoot them on the battle field (which American soldiers would not do, unless absolutely necessary), or turn them over to their countries of origin and let the real torture commence.
And lastly, if these "artists" really care, why don't they volunteer to host a couple of our "guests" from Gitmo? I'm sure they must have a spare bedroom or two in those big mansions bought during their glory days.
I guess Marxists have cooler t-shirts….
The perfect torture song…
I'm Henery the Eighth, I am,
Henery the Eighth I am, I am!
I got married to the widow next door,
She'd been married seven times before.
And every one was a Henery
She wouldn't have a Willie or a Sam
I'm her eighth old man named Henery
Henery the Eighth, I am!
Next verse, same as the first!
Hey, it worked on Whoopi and I hate the terrorists less.
Oh… well then… that was unfortunate… I suppose someone else can sue for them… :-/
Second verse, same as the first!
A little bit louder and a whole lot worse!
This is most of the same list that played the White House. Many who are Kool Aid Drinkers.
I understand that their is an upcoming Bill for artist getting payed royalties from radio stations. What happened to ASCAP? Is this Bill in trade for supporting Hussein and his Posse of Clowns?
And the Saga Continues!
Last time I heard J Browne was Running on Empty. Did he find some gas or something?
Well that depends on the album used. Anything they've made in the last 20 years EXCEPT for Green, Automatic for the People and Accelerate are really an uncomfortable listen. Torture.
Please!! For the LOVE of Allah!! Not Running on Empty again!!
Where does Jackosn Browne get the nerve? He drove his first wife to suicide and then treated Daryl Hannah like a punching abg. This is the great moral arbiter of American music?
REM's music is torture.
That spineless worm Michael Stipe is torturing me with his whining….get back to the 688 or Cantrells and do the watusi, you irrelevant douchebag
OH man, that song is creepy. Very appropriate.
I'd like to feel sorry for the Gitmo detainees, but I have to hear their crappy music every day.
Are they upset their music was used? Or are they upset their music was used AND was an effective form of torture?
I expect a real American musician to step up and offer his music to be used with his full consent and support… Ted Nugent, where are you?
and they sell 'em for $40 at the concert!
What's the big problem? After all, didn't our Commander-In-Chief try to torture the Queen of England by giving her an iPod full of his speeches? Viva Zapa! Che and Mao, too.
They're upset they didn't get "public performance" royalties.
Given that Jackson Browne allegedly smacked around Darryl Hannah, he's a fine one to talk about torture. The average Gitmo resident got far better treatment than Hannah did as Browne's girlfriend.
Running on empty indeed.
I so happy these artists are speaking up. It's the only way I know what not to listen to or purchase. Unless, of course, it was really good. Which it isn't
this might date me, but i thought the theme song of Gitmo has been picked
"They're Coming to Take Me Away ,Ha Ha !"
Feh – the day I start worrying about what all these man-children think about politics or national security is the day I tear up my voter registration card. This petition is a virtual Who's Who of Was Was. Gee – a rock star is taking a "brave" liberal stand. Color me bored.
Hey…Peral jam is the worst shit I ever heard…I'd give up OBL in a second rather than listen to that crap. Now, if I was in a cell & all I heard was say, Hot Tuna, the NRPS, or The Grateful Dead 24 / 7…well, I'd be in heaven. Absolute heaven ! & the louder the better !
Agree completely on Pearl Jam, I can't understand their popularity. They're much too monotone, and depressing to listen to for any length.
REM, I kinda like, although their politics make me ill. I saw them in concert, though, and they were extremely dull and uninspiring.
Actually REM released a new cd last year, and it is as tedious and uninspired as anything they did twenty years ago. The guitar player still can't play lead and Stipe is still a whiny little weasel.
The only torture worse than being forced to listen to this garbage, is to be forced to look at nudie pix of hillary, madeline albright, peolosi, and janet reno…
oh that's priceless — celebs torture us everyday with their crybaby whining about leftist causes WHEN THEY ARE STINKING RICH!! Hey Hollywood Whiners, I have 4 n'borhood fathers OUT OF WORK!!! OUR PROP VALUES ARE IN THE DUMP!! WE DON'T CARE ABOUT YOUR STUPID MUSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oops, I used a word that's not allowed. That comment won't be approved.
Oh well. I'd rather go water boarding than listen to any of these douchesses.
My first response was "so?" but then the article said that prisoners are being forced to listen to the Barney song. NOOOO! As a former nanny and a mom, I say that's completely inhumane; it gives me the cold sweats just thinking about it.
On the other hand, after 5,000 times of listening to "I love you, you love me, we're a happy family" maybe they'd start thinking that way. Barney as a brainwashing tool–could work.
yet they collect the $$$$ mullah after every show, what hypocrites!
I think Stipes has a ~future~ as a gay, junkie male prostitute. He's *got the look, he's got the look!"
I hope the relocate some Muslim extremist Gitmo thugs to near his home in Athens, GA.
Nothing~tickles~the ear drums like Middle Eastern*music*! "Ah Ohhhleeeeleeee yaaaaa yaaaa meeee weee weee wweeeeddd aulaadedddd allahaala wee wee weed up!"
I just wrote that, it's called (in English) Ah WeeWeeed Up! or in Arabic "Ahatla Muhedeera Oalabama Up" (up doesn't translate)
PAY ME!
You are obviously correct about this, and you being an expert I totally agree, more Bwarney for the "Boyz of Gitmo"!
and he probably uses electricity from the nuke sites he tried to kill in the 70's…what a clown.
Amen on the REM, I rather poke a sharp pencil into my ears.
REM was good when they had a jangly rock n roll sound, with "Radio Free Europe", "End of the World", and "Orange Crush". When they started playing mandolins in suicide songs that was it for me. Haven't listened to them in 20 years.
"Uh, Meester Guard Sir?" "Would you please play us some more of "Stand" from this most verrry verrry gud Americans band the ah, REM?" "Praise be to Ahkbar!"
lol!
I played in *bar bands* for drink tabs in the late 70's lets just say that the last set could get a little, shall we say rough?
Outstanding! I'm still laughing.
Its the Michael Moore syndrome. "I'm a communist unless you try to take MY money, then you can go screw yourself."
Most modern music is suitable for little more than torture. I would play Beethoven and Mozart for the terrorists.
If the "artists" themselves are upset about the use of their music as torture, then then maybe all the old time critics of sex, drugs and rock and roll were right after all….
It's good to know their colonoscopy-for-the-ears bilge has actually been put to a productive use.
LOL!!! A perfect song! hehehe…. Thanks for the laff!!!
That song is a HOOT!
Lettem' listen to Barney!!! For HOURS!!!
So now making someone listen to a song for a long time is torture? What bunch of candy asses. One of the idiots complaining about his "music" being used as "torture" is an avowed commie who supports the castro regime.
1,000,000 bottles of beer on the wall,
1,000,000 bottles of beer.
Take one down and pass it around;
999,999 bottles of beer on the wall …
Big Hollywood “… calls on the CIA to start using audio tapes of rock stars pontificating on politics as an interrogation tactic.”
I agree, I would confess to almost anything if I had to listen to these leftists idolizing themselves and reminding the rest of us how important they are. And to put it mildly, one more speech by Obama contaminating the airways with his cr@p is enough to make me shoot blood out of my ears.
Try this one for an explosion in your head:

HA!! I can just hear the audience at the live show "ALLAHU AKBAR" while the women shout "UHLULULULULULULULULULULULULULULULULULULULULULULULULULU *<breath>*
UHLULULULULULULULULULULULULULULULULULULULULULULULULULULULULU"………
Many years ago late at night at Disneyland my family and I became trapped on "It's a Small World" the ride when it broke down. After sitting in the little boat hearing that damn 'It's a Small World" tune sung in 12 languages for about 36 minutes I was ready to confess to the Kennedy assassination. I would have done anything to make it stop. Even when I hear that song today I have flashbacks coupled with post traumatic stress that triggers advanced delusionary schizophrenia with involuntary narcissistic rage.
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
I would gladly donate recordings of anything I've ever composed to the CIA for use at Guantanamo, free of charge. It would honor me to serve my country in this way.
See? These morons have it exactly backwards.
HAHAHA!! That story sounds similarly familiar, I don't know why.
Stipe's "earnestness" IS annoying, not too unlike Bono. "He's got the look" LOL!! A guy that used to hang out at the bar I worked in many years ago thought the line was, "He likes to cook." So anytime I hear that song I think of that line and the dude you used to get it wrong.
Yank/Angels back to Bronx NYC for the clincher which can't come soon enough. Tough loss after a stirring comeback!!!
Can't do that song! Don't you know that alcohol is not halal? Someone might get his turban in a twist. Or at least the ACLU would object.
LOL! Are you also afraid of little dancing dolls? ;>)
I bet Slayer would love having their stuff used to "torture" the bad guys,
As for me, torture would be anything by Billy Joel, Kenny Rogers, Van Morrison or pretty much anything on the radio in the mid-1970s.
Right!
I don't know about the rest of the bunch on that list, but with the Rage Against Whitey tool, what really bothers him is that his music is being used to extract information that SAVES American lives he would much rather see ended.
Rage Against The Machine is one of the most hateful bands that ever laid sound to tape.
The primary target of their hatred?
The U.S., the country that gave them the freedom of speech to say some of the most hateful and sub-moronic drek ever to be played on alternative radio and make millions of dollars doing it.
Can't argue with his assessment that listening to his music is torture though.
I so agree. This whole conversation reminds me of the REM back in the 80's who said that they would never lip-synch in a video — then Losing My Religion came out five years later.
At some point in my music biz career I either dealt with, worked with or befriended the Pearl Jammers, REM, Steve Earle, Roseanne Cash, Billy Bragg… and I knew then what they are proving now, that deep down inside they are coonts. Occasionally nice, but mostly arrogant, shallow and narcissistic morons. This article is amusing and no surprise. I must say that they are in such deep denial – all of them – if they believe that any CD they have released in the last 7-8 years isn't torture in and of itself. They are just mad that they have potentially lost the only remaining 200+ sales that their most current lame catalogue offerings might sell in coming years, when the lunatics are let loose from the asylum. Or that maybe said lunatics might hunt them down for making such terrible and torturous "music" ~ poor Stipey. This must be killing his little supercilious butt. Hahahahaha.

That's hope and change!
If they were real anarchists they would accept that we can do with their music whatever we want.
They are more like the nihilists in "The Big Lebowski" who complained "It´s not fair!" when they didn´t get their ransom money.
Aleric,
That's exactly the notion that I posited with my comment. Reread it, note the question marks, and methinks you'll see.
Oh, the humanity! What a terrible situation! The poor little precious dears whose "music" (a term used quite liberally describing some of the noise in the playlist I read) was used to unsettle people whose sole purpose in life is to kill indiscrimently can't bear the thought of those innocent little lambs at Gitmo having their sensitivies assaulted? What a complete crock! Do these freakin' idiots have a clue what every one of those savages we've put in quarantine in the safest place we can find would do to these "artists" if they ever gained the power to inflict Sharia Law on them? Based on the reported behavior of so many of these "artists," they would be at least stoned, if not outright beheaded for what these fanatical killers consider immoral behavior in the extreme. Hmmm…come to think of it, perhaps a week of Sharia Law each year with the attendant liquidations of disgustingly immoral libertines infesting our airwaves might not be such a bad idea.
What torture? The really sad thing is that even many conservatives have come to accept that we are doing such things at all. We aren´t.
The truth is that we have been treating the Gitmo inmates with the utmost courtesy for years. Nobody gets tortured. Not even harshly interrogated. Thanks to their legion of fans in the media and high-powered pro bono radical lawyers these people are treated better than common criminals. Back in 2002 the three big-time terrorists we waterboarded for a few minutes amply deserved it – actually they deserved much worse – they gave vital information and the left simply doesn´t want to give up this particular cudgel.
"…they'll confess to starting the San Francisco fire."
But we will know that THAT is a lie and as a punishment they´ll get sent to bed without dinner. That is, if the International Red Cross approves.
agreed, God Bless Johnny Ramone.
To make the "enhanced interrogation" really effective. They should make the prisoners wear early 90's oversized plaid shirts and grunge couture while cranking to the 2009 Pearl Jam CD. That would be like, "they suck so bad now!! I'll talk! I'll talk!!"
jus make sure to hand out earplugs to our men. i suggest 120db strength!
Dear
windbagsmusicians;Your music has been used for sleep deprivation much more than you are aware. Ask anyone who has ever lived in a dormitory. Screw the guys in Gitmo, the vast majority of who were caught in the process of doing something to kill civilians and our troops. When are you going to speak out for those who are familiar with my past plight?
Gee whiz, the comments here are so clever and witty. I suggest trying out college. Or more likely, obtaining a GED. After turning your brain cells back on, good, generous, and kind-hearted Americans, you might find it harder to condone torture and racism. Our soldiers overseas suffer more when America defies the Geneva Convention. I'm so disappointed by the lack of compassion displayed by the people in our nation of self-righteous egomaniacs. Your mommy might have told you that you were the cutest little boy or girl in the whole world, but in reality, you are just another useless blip in history. What good is your hatred doing?
