Celebrity Quote of the Day (Maybe of the Year)
by Big Hollywood
The Vulture interviewed ”world-renowned blues legend John Mayer”:
What do you think about health care? Would you take the public option?
Have you ever heard me play guitar? I’m really fucking good. You know what I’m bad at? Answering questions about public health care. This is not in my wheelhouse. Do you have any questions about music? I almost got a mad need to lighten up. You need to lighten up, because the questions you asked me were all troublemaking questions. If someone gave me the Nobel Peace Prize, and I didn’t deserve it, I would just shut my mouth and enjoy the hell out of it.

Ahem,
"I've learned the hard way to just shut up and sing…"
- John Mayer
Or something.
"If someone gave me the Nobel Peace Prize, and I didn’t deserve it, I would just shut my mouth and enjoy the hell out of it."
Heh.

i think he realizes, if he gives no answer, nobody cares what he thinks, they like his music. but if he would answer one way or the other, he might loose one half of his fans (music buying public). perhaps all of tinseltown could learn from him. i do not own any of his music, but i might give it a listen.
I like his music OK, but I'm not a fan by any stretch. When I see him, though, it makes me wonder if maybe something bad happened to him once upon a time. Also, he is a good player, technically speaking — I'm not sure he really soars, the way the best musicians do.
As petee said, Mr. Mayer decided that discretion is indeed the better part of valor.
Michael Jordan once said "Republicans buy shoes too"
smart kid
WOW! Just WOW!
OMG!!! Is he really that stupid? Why is it when I read stuff like this it always taints the 'artist' for me? Not that I expect them to agree with me, but can they at least learn to disagree intelligently?

If only more celebrities followed his example.
"A man's got to know his limitations."
The Vulture interviewed ”world-renowned blues legend John Mayer”:
Err, this clown is neither a blues player or a legend. I think world renowned douche bag is the correct title.
I read the linked article and it is just another self absorbed guy who thinks because he can play a guitar he is something special. I am sure a lot of his comments were just BS to get a rise but come on, who would listen to anyone this self centered about anything. He might be a good blues player but he is far from the best.
Clearly Mayer is not the sharpest knife in the drawer.
At least he's honest!

As Alice Cooper said, "Anyone who gets their political views from a rock star is a moron." Mayer is right to shut up.
Totally disagree, the guy just doesn't take himself seriously. Unlike many celebs who do. You'll never see this guy do a "how can I be of service to Obama" video like Demi and her son.. I MEAN HUSBAND!!!
Oh, and "world-renowned blues legend"? Maybe Vulture has him confused with John Mayall.
Dude is smart enough to know to admit what he doesn't know. Do we need another Whoopi (not rape-rape)?
Amen! He also ripped all the music people who supported John Kerry by saying that they were "traitors to rock and roll". He said "rock and roll is about messing with the establishment, not making a new one".
Mayer must have cut back on his kool aid.
His response was honest and to the point. Wish more politicians would display Mayer's level of candor.
Simply by virtue of not being an utter idiot, he's likely one of the six smartest men in the entertainment industry.
Ok… well when you put it that way I can see it…
Yeah, after reading the whole interview I thought that's a minute of my life I can't get back again. I might like the fact that he throws an insult in Obama's direction, but he treated the interviewer like crap. What a self-involved schmuck.
You know, that's what I thought. If nothing else, the Bluesbreakers did provide Brian Jones's (first) replacement.
I'm not familiar with Mayer's music, but I have pretty good working knowledge of world-renowned blues legends.
If you don't deserve something, enjoying the hell out of it is unlikely.
Another deep thinker from the left chimes in.

Eric Clapton played with the Bluesbreakers for a while, as well as Peter Green, Mick Fleetwood, & John McVie, I'm sure there are more I can't think of at the moment, but suffice to say Mayall & The Bluesbreakers attracted a lot of talent
Hey Bennet….GO BOMBERS!!!!
I never heard his music, but I'm impressed by his wisdom… I wish the rest of Hollywood had the intelligence to grasp this concept…
ABD…If the most beautiful girl in the world ask you to go to bed with her…would you deserve it?…would you enjoy it? Now who is the deep thinker?
He could be mediocre, but he knows better than to alienate half his fan base by being a "politically active" celebutwit.
He could be mediocre, but he knows better than to alienate half his fan base by being a "politically active" celebutwit. That alone puts him head and shoulders ahead of 90% of his peers.
Even if they weren't, at least he has the sense not to get involved in that particular dance…
Love him or hate him, he is one of the best living guitarists right now. He really is that good.
I'm not a fan, but I appreciate his skills. Besides, this guy cares way more about trim than any healthcare, public or not.
I would have more sympathy for him if he behaved like a man instead of a spoiled child throwing a tantrum. A simple "no comment" would have been the more mature response.
Mayer is another leftist. He called himself a "sense-o-crat" whatever that means. His "senses" got him campaigning for idiots like John Kerry, John Edwards, and Barack Obama.
He was drunk on the Obama kool aid. Here is his op-ed http://www.huffingtonpost.com/john-mayer/hope-is-...
John Mayer is either having an awakening or being facetious.
Although his response wasn't entirely coherent, it's still wise of him to stay out of politics while admitting he doesn't know enough about the subject to opine on the issue. Most celebs think they are Rhodes Scholars when they are actually borderline retarded. At least Mayer knows when he's out of his league. And did I detect a little contempt toward the interviewer for even asking such a loaded question?
I can hardly wait. Unfortunately, they're expecting some bad weather tomorrow night — hope they get the game in.
On to Number 27!
I hardly think of Mayer as a blues musician.
I know what you mean, me too, I've been going through Yankee playoff withdrawl. Watched the Phillie@Dodger game tonight. Yeah I heard about the weather in NYC being crappy, and I hope they get the game in as well. I think there has been too much time between series, oh well.
On to #27 indeed my friend!!!
"John Mayer is either having an awakening or being facetious."
I'm going with facetious. Looks like Mayer saw The Vulture coming.
John Mayer is a first class ass-hat, and a world renowned douche rocket.
As far as a blues man??? He needs to refine his game.
No one loses a job in the entertainment industry when they say they are Democrats. The same can't be said for those who say they are Republicans. So when an artist/actor/celebrity refuse to give an opinion on a political topic odds are he is a Republican.
John Mayer?? ….hmmmm…. Why should I give a damn again ? Never heard of him or his music …….Best blues guitarist : Robert Johnson, B.B King, Stevie Ray Vaughn – triple crown tie.
In concert, 2006, he told us in the audience "There's a lot of people who are going to tell you how to vote this year. I'm not one of them. Just vote your conscience." He may be a lefty (his rocking cover of Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues" would seem to indicate such a thing), but he's not an ideologue.
From "Belief": "Is there anyone who ever remembers changing their mind from the paint on a sign? Is there anyone who really recalls ever breaking rank at all for something someone yelled real loud one time?" This song was written after he relocated to Los Angeles, and during the interminable parade of "Anti-War [i.e. Bush]" protests in Hollywood.
His new single, "Who Says" is almost a libertarian anthem.
Finally, for all the haters, I invite you to check out John Mayer Trio. Knock "Your Body is a Wonderland" out of your head and listen to him take on some meatier music. At the very least, search for "Mayer Clapton Crossroads" and watch him swap licks with a true blues guitar legend. Mayer has chops, and his is a career in the making.
Who the heck is John Mayer? I don't give a hoot what he thinks about healthcare, and unless he's Eric Clapton, he's just bean bag.
He may be weird but he did get to fool around with Jennifer Aniston : )
(as so many have)
Someone asked Daniel Day Lewis his opinion about something political once and he basically said something similar (a lot more intelligently, of course). Something like "I don't think anyone really cares what an actor has to say about that…" It was incredibly refreshing.
Well, he may be a smart a@@h*le but he is still an a@@h*le and I have this rule that I really do subscribe to: if they are a@@h*les I don't give them my money. I feel I have a fiscal responsibility to my husband, my offspring, my house and God to use our resources wisely. Giving money to an a@@h*le just doesn't seem fiscally responsible–AND you would not believe the money we are saving right now NOT spending money on a@@h*le entertainers and their fluffy projects!
Evidently he doesn't care enough to tell you anyways…..
Actually I don't think the story is John Mayor here but the reporter or the reporter's editor or whoever…….
This guy is a blues musician right. In the 20 plus question article he was asked maybe two questions about music. The first three were about Politics and then four more lecturing him that he should answer questions about politics. If the man does not want to discuss it then leave him the H#(( alone.
Somehow everything got all Wee Weed Up!
I'm a HUGE John Mayer fan and have been one for almost a decade. I did both his cruises, seen him in concert 30 times and have met him 7 times (I've also met his bandmates and even his brother Carl). He is a very nice person who does have a smart @$$ streak. He is intelligent and yes, he is a liberal (eh no one is perfect). He is also very very funny (I've seen him do stand up too). A very talented musician who is often misrepresented by the media. He also is doing a charity show in San Diego in December that benefits our military families. He mentioned on his cruise at the Q&A I went to that he will be working with military charities. I got a chance after that Q&A to thank him for working with our military which MOST of the left in Hollywierd would never ever do (charity for our military). He may be a lefty but at least he appeciates what our military does. The interviewer also baited him into these questions when all he wanted to do is promote "Battle Studies" (due out on Nov. 17th, tour in 2010).
No he's not stupid. I know I've actually met the guy and had a conversation with him on many occassions.

He did a show on VH1 or MTV that followed him around. He did things like dress up in a bear outfit and go out into the people waiting in line for his show (they didn't know it was him.) I agree.
I believe his comments are the smartest to come out of a celebrity's mouth in decades.
Hey Petee,
The guy is, as he says, an amazing guitar player. If you have any testosterone coursing through your veins I would recommend the John Mayer Trio CD. His other stuff is fine if you like pop, but he really shows his guitar playing with the Trio.
Skoob,
Not to argue, but as I mentioned above, give his JM Trio CD a listen. He does play very well in the blues/rock style of Hendrix and Vaughn. He's not really my cup of tea, but as a (terrible) guitarist who plays in the blues/rock style myself I can certainly attest to his ability.
I became a fan of Brad Pitt for the same reason, a reporter asked him what he thought of the situation in China after he made a movie about China and Brad replied, I am an actor I am not qualified to discuss the China situation. so don't ask me about China!
he is a good guitar player
Geez, people. You get mad when celebrities shill for politicians and their pet projects. Now you're mad because one celebrity refuses to? Make up your mind, and stop acting like petulant liberals.
Celebs refuse to believe that just because they have money doesn't make them intelligent. Just because they frequent the swanky restaurant and manicurist and may be some kind of authority on the latest fashion, does not make them smart.
My favorite one is still Ashley Judd, with her Left Wing Credibility scarf and that way she enunciates her words to show how brilliant she is (I wonder if she started doing that before or after Harvard).
I don't claim to be a genius, but I don't expect people to bow at my feet and follow my political views either.
Really hate the guy's music – not so much his guitar-playing but that whispery, "ain't I sexy" little voice of his – especially when he sings that "Daughters" drivel. But I liked his comment. He told the Vulture off in a way that I wish every celebrity would tell off every reporter who asks him or her about some deep issue, just to stir up controversy. Question is, would he do the same to a totally lefty interviewer or on a totally lefty blog?
“Have you ever heard me play guitar? I’m really fucking good.”
He’s entitled to his opinion.
John Maher should have gone into real estate or sold shoes and played in a local band, getting together for practice sessions twice a week and maybe getting booked at the local "Dew Drp Inn" or "Hurry Sundown" or possibly the "Road Kill Bar'n Grill" on Friday or Saturday nights. The quality of music these kids are growing up on is staggeringly terrible. I grew up on The Band and Tom Waits and Townes Van Zandt and Tom Russell and I'm appalled and sad for the garbage the young ones are being sold. I'm glad I never had any kids, sooooo glad!

He hasn't been around long enough to be a legend for one, and he's mostly known for his pop tunes, but give the man his due, he's a very good guitar player. And he's smart to skip the political questions.
Love that Alice Cooper quote! So true. Musicians, actors, etc. need to Shut Up And Sing!
After that incredibly whiny "protest" song, "Waiting for the World to Change," I really lost interest in the guy, though his demographic is more dippy sorority girls anyway. This quote actually makes me think he just might be on the road to maturity. But not enough to buy any of his songs.

"I'm just an entertainer." — Elvis Presley
i thought "world-renowned blues legend" was a bit over the top, even for a fan mag, at this relatively early point in Mayer's career, but "world renowned douchebag" was a lot below the belt. i don't follow much celebrity news, but unless this guy has a record/reputation of doing bad things besides just making music you don't care for and generally being the usual self-absorbed performer, lighten up.
Alice Cooper is actually pretty conservative, does a lot of charity work/appearances, and by most accounts is a really decent guy.
he'd lay there at half mast, wracked with guilt over his undeserved good fortune, while both the little devil on his left shoulder and the little angel on the right are screaming "F___ HER ALREADY! F___ HER BRAINS OUT!"

word. Sabathidomination.
I play blues and this guy's alright, but hardly a legend. However, he is to be commended for keeping his politicial views to himself and dodging a "gotcha" question.
I probably don't like any of his political views, but man was that one of the best interviews I have ever read that was allowed to get published. He basically told the interviewer to get a clue and stop asking stupid questions, or questions relevant to the reason there would be an interview in the first place. If a conservative was to treat reporters this same way I would be so proud of them. Not that they would get their words published.
I'll take the late great Stevie Ray Vaughn.
Nah….I like a challenge and to challenge. Using the dollar signs is too obvious! So next time you see these @ signs that apparently get on your last nerve, should I decide to use them again, let it go. Life's too short to nit pick.
Muddy Waters he's not but at least he realizes he sells to both conservatives and liberals.
He had me from the day he told Fox's Meghan Kelly that he had a major crush on her (who doesn't for that matter?)
John! Put the bong down and step away from the stupidity.
I'll take Billy Gibbons then.
I think Mayer's answer was very smart. People who look to celebrities for political wisdom are morons. Just because he's a talented musician does not necessarily translate into anything more. He knows which side his bread is buttered on.
I just disagree with the "Blues Legend" title and his appearances on TMZ type shows scream douche bag. I won't go as far to say he doesn't have any ability to play. But my experiences as drummer from Chicago who sat in with many blues bands makes me shake my head in disbelief at the claim of him being a blues legend. Oh well, to each their own.
Yeah, it was kind of cranky…My bad.
John who??? A "world-renowned blues legend"??? What? "Have you ever heard me play guitar? I’m really fucking good." Yeah, right. Stevie Ray Vaughn, he ain't. I heard him play and it is just another wannbe johnny guitar watson thing. Eric Clapton IS A "world-renowned blues legend"! Listen and compare, all you young ones.
Smart man, knows when to shut up.
Sure some might think John Mayer might be a douche for this interview. I actually think he is just sick and tired of these weak liberal reporters asking about his view on something and not asking about his music. I looked at those questions he was asked and I have seen harder interviews in a issue of Highlights for Kids at a dentists office. The problem now is Liberals feel it is far more important to find out if you are one of them then it is to ask serious questions about what they actually do.
I don't care for John's music, I most likely don't care for his political views even if they may or may not coencide with mine. I just think if you are going to interview a musician you should have the first questions be about the music not their views.
You guys are way off base here – Mayer's answer was funny and more stars should take his approach. He also got in a zinger at Obama that not many in showbiz would take. What is your beef? Also, he is really good.
If you read the linked piece, it's pretty clear that "world-renowned blues legend" was entirely sarcastic. The piece is very funny. I ended up liking the reporter and John Mayer both, but I probably like the reporter more because I'll never have to listen to her music.
…and we're on our way!
MR. Sabathia was awesome last night.
Watching the weather right now (5:00 pm Mountain Time) in NYC, looks a little rough, rain, low 40's. I guessing they will get the game in.
no matter what, TEXAS 16 – Oklahoma 13!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, I'm also inclined to find celebrity politicizing arrogant, incoherent or just way offbase from my own way of thinking. But I like that Mayer didn't try to answer that, and I think his music is pretty lame actually, so I'm all ready to disagree with him from the get-go. Elvis was asked in a press conference one time about his politics and he basically said, "I like to just keep that stuff to myself. I'm an entertainer and that's what I like to concentrate on." The interviewer then asked if he felt other musicians and entertainers should keep their opinions to themselves, and he just said "no." Gotta admire that.
